Why can’t a macOs be installed in a Windows computer?

Why can’t a macOS be installed in a Windows computer?

macOS, also known as Mac OS X, is a proprietary operating system developed and maintained by Apple Inc. for use on Apple’s Macintosh computers. This operating system is not designed to be installed on non-Apple hardware, such as a Windows computer. This is because macOS is specifically built to work with Apple’s hardware and software ecosystem, and is therefore not compatible with the hardware and software of a Windows computer. Additionally, Apple has put in place technical and legal restrictions to prevent macOS from being installed on non-Apple hardware.

Why can’t a macOS be installed in a Windows computer?
Why can’t a macOS be installed in a Windows computer?

Apple don’t want that to happen.

Not because they want to extract more money from hardware sales (Apple hardware is actually cheap for the quality you get anyway), not because they wouldn’t sell OS X as a product if they could.

It’s really simple: they did the math on the support costs of random third party hardware, and the numbers came up “nope”.

Apple actually did this long before OS X was a thing; for a short while you could actually get a licensed non-Apple MacOS computer.

But the support costs killed it.

To actually do this and make money, they’d have to sell OS X for a couple of thousand dollars, or maybe a subscription at about $50/month. That’s to pay for the three or four thousand developers and ten or so thousand support people they’d have to hire to deal with all the random crap hardware out there.

And it still wouldn’t meet their quality targets anyway.

So how can Microsoft do it?

They get the OEMs and hardware manufacturers to deal with most of it. Which they mostly do badly, but people have somehow become used to the resulting mess.

Making the OS itself free does mean that they don’t want people to install it on third party hardware because that would mean zero profits from the extra user (unless they use services such as iCloud in a premium fashion — more than just what’s given free).

I guess that makes the hackintoshing phenomenon an issue. Now, when the support for the last Intel based Mac ends hackintoshing will be a real issue (I mean, some explicitly limit themselves to High Sierra because of some NVidia GPUs that aren’t supported on newer versions at all…). But for now, if you have good, compatible hardware, you can reap the benefits just fine.

I am currently a hackintosher but intend to get an actual MacBook Pro (Intel based) soon. Wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t get a good hackintosh. So I’d say, don’t fight those who try it out like this and then migrate to actual Apple products, since that’s actually a profit vector. Only fight those that do it despite that.

The better question to ask is “How does Linux do it?”. You can find drivers for most of “the random crap hardware out there”… You can “google yourself” the support for most of the issues you’d run into, unlike Windows, etc. Support is a “thing” mostly for corporate users. Companies need someone to sue in case they’d somehow lose a penny because of hw/sw issues.

Using Windows would be much better than hackintoshing. Windows has its issues, it is not as reliable as macOS. However, Windows is much more flexible than macOS. It is much more programmer friendly than macOS. Most of the advantages of macOS will cease to exist once you take it out of the integration with Apple hardware.

You can, not so easily, run the OSX on a windows machine as you would run a second version of windows or Linux or any other OS. My current machine has around 4 different OS in 2 drives. The machine was originally assembled keeping in mind running it on OSX, endearingly known by the community as Hackintoshs. I did run an OSX version of Snow Leopard for a few months but didn’t have much use of it as I already own a MacBook Pro. A fun project but not without hastles.

Also, I did shift my 10+ year old MacBooks drive into the machine, before writing this reply, just for fun. Given the changes over time, the OSX failed to recognise half the peripherals which is solvable, but would need a lot of work.

You can. Such computers are called a “Hackintosh.” The procedure is totally unsupported, but I suppose it can save the user some money, when it works.

It’s not that it can’t. It’s a violation of the end-user license. If you’d like to give a try, just google out Hackintosh. I am not aware of any prosecution if you do. Definitely nothing like the infamous Microsoft initiated BSA raids on companies and individual users.

  • Trade In MBP or Sell Private Party?
by /u/Idontlikethenamegame (Mac) on April 24, 2025 at 2:07 am

I'm planning on purchasing a new Macbook Pro for work and have a personal one as well. Regardless of work, I'll get to keep the new one - I've been given a modest budget to cover a basic model and any higher specs come out of my pocket. According to Apple, using my serial number, they'll give me $610 on trade in. Curious if it would be worth my time to pursue third party resale. Here are the specs: M2 24 gb memory 8-Core CPU 10-Core GPU 13" (Mid 2022) 1TB SSD Retina Essentially perfect condition pretty sure it's space gray. the lighter gray? I have up to 4 additional monitors I could add so I'm interested in the M4 Max chip. However, I currently run a DisplayLink adapter in order to run multiples with my M2 chip. That stated, the DisplayLink definitely has its quirks that made it annoying at times that would likely be eliminated with the M4 Max. Specifically, the DisplayLink doesn't like notifications and blocks them, it has this weird issue with expanding text and advancnig photos (when expanded or advanced, its it does it, then automoactically "reverts" but in reality if you wiggle the mouse over it, it repopulates). Is that enough to justify the M4 Max? Would love your thoughts on if you think the hassle of selling would be worth the additional funds over the $610 trade in. • My MacBook Pro gets hot in my backpack and dies randomly
by /u/tombom789 (Mac) on April 24, 2025 at 12:00 am

Lately, my MacBook Pro will become very hot when I close it and put it in my backpack. In addition to this, the battery will rapidly die randomly when not in use. Even in situations when I just leave it on my desk on a full battery, I’ll come back the next day and the battery will be dead. It only gets hot when it’s in my backpack though. My backpack is also vented so I don’t understand how heat could get trapped. This wasn’t an issue in the past. I have checked to ensure all applications are closed and even when they are, it still gets hot in my backpack. There doesn’t seem to be a reason it heats up. As for the battery dying when not in use, there also didn’t seem to be a reason. I’ve checked the battery health in system settings and everything comes back normal. The computer has never reported any issues. The storage is also not nearly close to being full. I’m going to just start shutting it down before putting it away but I feel like I shouldn’t have to do that. What’s the deal with both of these issues? submitted by /u/tombom789 [link] [comments]

  • Just got an M4 Pro MBP, looking for battery tips
by /u/ComprehensiveAsk4279 (Mac) on April 23, 2025 at 9:27 pm

Obviously, it cost a good chunk of change, and after my Lenovo didn't last me nearly as long as I wanted it to, I'm looking to get as much time as possible out of this laptop. Any tips out there? I hear a LOT about "Al Dente," but some people also say that it's snake oil. Should I dish out the 24$? Also, when I'm at home using it (which, ironically even though it's a laptop, is primarily where I'll be using it as I go back to school primarily virtually) is it better to keep it plugged in while I'm using it, or to use it on battery? Just generally looking for some tips / advice. I am trying not to give into my tendency to be OCD about stuff like this, but also want to do my best and to get some real longevity out of this (for me) rather sizable investment. submitted by /u/ComprehensiveAsk4279 [link] [comments]

by /u/Mr_KovacicYT (Mac) on April 23, 2025 at 8:32 pm

Some backstory; this mac was sitting untouched in a closet wrapped in its foil. I am probably the first one to unpack it and turn it on as it looks absolutely pristine. It came with some papers, coupons, peripherals and a cutout of the original box (which i didnt include in the photo). Didnt get past the setup screen because i wasnt sure if thats a good idea. I would like to know how much is all this worth?! (G4 MDD + the better looking keyboard and mouse + all cables + papers that came with it). If theres something i really dont understand; its Macintosh computers. I need to know the price tag on this G4 MDD including at least one set of keyboard and mouse (because the worse looking ones i plan to sell with another G4 Graphite that i have). If this is the wrong subreddit for this post, or you need more context please tell me ASAP because i am trying to advertise this to make a profit and make the G4 someone elses worry. submitted by /u/Mr_KovacicYT [link] [comments]

  • This account is locked and can’t be used ... again
by /u/CacheConqueror (Mac) on April 23, 2025 at 6:03 pm

For six months I had account No.1 to Apple which I used mainly for business purposes. 3 months ago I joined an organization where a new application was being released still in beta by testflight. A normal app for organizing meals, calories, workouts, etc. 2 weeks ago it logged me out of testflight by itself. I did nothing except download the new beta version when it was available. I tried to log in and 100% typing in the correct password and info it threw up a balloon in yellow saying "Check the account information you entered and try again". I'm sure the password was correct, I didn't change the password or modify anything on my account so it puzzled me. I clicked on "forget password" and there I got the information that Apple must do some "review" and I will get an answer in another day. On the next day came the information that "We've reviewed your request, and access to your account has been denied" I tried to log in to the account and there popped up the information "This account is locked. This account is locked and can't be used." What the f*** does that mean? Have they banned my account? For what? I have absolutely no information, support in this review wrote NOTHING.... To this day I have no access to my account in any way. I needed an account on short notice due to testing the app on testflight and created a second account about a week ago. Yesterday again the same situation, I was logged out of the account, I got a "review" from support exactly the same. When logging in I get the same "This account is locked. This account is locked and can't be used." I am very pissed off because Apple did not give me any information why I have a "locked" account, why I can't log in, why in review I got "denied" AND why two accounts to make me inaccessible in a row. I do not want to create another account because I suspect that again the account will be locked. I just do not understand why, what is the reason and whether the account can be recovered. Has anyone encountered something like this and found a solution? submitted by /u/CacheConqueror [link] [comments]

I know there are lots of recommendations for M chip Mac. I do have a M3 chip imac 2023. but I still got the iMac Pro for 950 USD with 8hours drive. Am I wrong? Basically , I am just a normal user. so as long as it smooths I'm fine with any devices . It’s a 18cores intel Xeon chip. with 256G RAM + 4TB. with Vega64X GPU. based on the series number. it was made in 2020. so it just 5years old .not 8years old... at least I can play game better than the iMac M3 2023...I guess because of the Ram. and the screen is better than the iMac M3. it has the 30bitRGB .I'm not sure other imac5k have this or not. but iMac m3 don't have this. submitted by /u/darkghost688 [link] [comments]
