Why can’t a macOS be installed in a Windows computer?

macOS, also known as Mac OS X, is a proprietary operating system developed and maintained by Apple Inc. for use on Apple’s Macintosh computers. This operating system is not designed to be installed on non-Apple hardware, such as a Windows computer. This is because macOS is specifically built to work with Apple’s hardware and software ecosystem, and is therefore not compatible with the hardware and software of a Windows computer. Additionally, Apple has put in place technical and legal restrictions to prevent macOS from being installed on non-Apple hardware.

Why can’t a macOS be installed in a Windows computer?
Why can’t a macOS be installed in a Windows computer?

Apple don’t want that to happen.

Not because they want to extract more money from hardware sales (Apple hardware is actually cheap for the quality you get anyway), not because they wouldn’t sell OS X as a product if they could.

It’s really simple: they did the math on the support costs of random third party hardware, and the numbers came up “nope”.

Apple actually did this long before OS X was a thing; for a short while you could actually get a licensed non-Apple MacOS computer.

But the support costs killed it.

To actually do this and make money, they’d have to sell OS X for a couple of thousand dollars, or maybe a subscription at about $50/month. That’s to pay for the three or four thousand developers and ten or so thousand support people they’d have to hire to deal with all the random crap hardware out there.

Your next big opportunity in AI could be just a click away!

And it still wouldn’t meet their quality targets anyway.

So how can Microsoft do it?

They get the OEMs and hardware manufacturers to deal with most of it. Which they mostly do badly, but people have somehow become used to the resulting mess.

Pass the AWS Certified Machine Learning Specialty Exam with Flying Colors: Master Data Engineering, Exploratory Data Analysis, Modeling, Machine Learning Implementation, Operations, and NLP with 3 Practice Exams. Get the MLS-C01 Practice Exam book Now!

Making the OS itself free does mean that they don’t want people to install it on third party hardware because that would mean zero profits from the extra user (unless they use services such as iCloud in a premium fashion — more than just what’s given free).

I guess that makes the hackintoshing phenomenon an issue. Now, when the support for the last Intel based Mac ends hackintoshing will be a real issue (I mean, some explicitly limit themselves to High Sierra because of some NVidia GPUs that aren’t supported on newer versions at all…). But for now, if you have good, compatible hardware, you can reap the benefits just fine.

I am currently a hackintosher but intend to get an actual MacBook Pro (Intel based) soon. Wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t get a good hackintosh. So I’d say, don’t fight those who try it out like this and then migrate to actual Apple products, since that’s actually a profit vector. Only fight those that do it despite that.

The better question to ask is “How does Linux do it?”. You can find drivers for most of “the random crap hardware out there”… You can “google yourself” the support for most of the issues you’d run into, unlike Windows, etc. Support is a “thing” mostly for corporate users. Companies need someone to sue in case they’d somehow lose a penny because of hw/sw issues.

Using Windows would be much better than hackintoshing. Windows has its issues, it is not as reliable as macOS. However, Windows is much more flexible than macOS. It is much more programmer friendly than macOS. Most of the advantages of macOS will cease to exist once you take it out of the integration with Apple hardware.

You can, not so easily, run the OSX on a windows machine as you would run a second version of windows or Linux or any other OS. My current machine has around 4 different OS in 2 drives. The machine was originally assembled keeping in mind running it on OSX, endearingly known by the community as Hackintoshs. I did run an OSX version of Snow Leopard for a few months but didn’t have much use of it as I already own a MacBook Pro. A fun project but not without hastles.

Also, I did shift my 10+ year old MacBooks drive into the machine, before writing this reply, just for fun. Given the changes over time, the OSX failed to recognise half the peripherals which is solvable, but would need a lot of work.

You can. Such computers are called a “Hackintosh.” The procedure is totally unsupported, but I suppose it can save the user some money, when it works.

AI Unraveled: Demystifying Frequently Asked Questions on Artificial Intelligence (OpenAI, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Generative AI, Discriminative AI, xAI, LLMs, GPUs, Machine Learning, NLP, Promp Engineering)

It’s not that it can’t. It’s a violation of the end-user license. If you’d like to give a try, just google out Hackintosh. I am not aware of any prosecution if you do. Definitely nothing like the infamous Microsoft initiated BSA raids on companies and individual users.

  • What would make an early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" run very slow?
by /u/nnray (Mac) on November 6, 2025 at 2:41 pm

A friend of mine sent me an early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" he wasn't using anymore. When it arrived, I could tell immediately the battery was swollen. I removed the battery right away, and tried to get it going without the battery but didn't realize he also sent me the wrong (too low wattage) power adapter, which resulted in it just shutting down suddenly and frequently. I bought a new battery and power adapter, installed a SATA SSD, and while it passes all hardware diagnostics and I have successfully installed a fresh copy of MacOS on it, it runs really slow all the time - installing the OS, booting the OS, doing anything in the Finder or any app. When I launch an app even the dock bounce is not smooth, and if I type really fast, it sometimes looses keytrokes. I've never seen anything like it before... I've tried SMC and PRAM resets, and swapped out the SSD for another known good one and reinstalled the OS, but it's the same. I'm just kind of baffled at this point. Could the swollen battery have done something to cause this? submitted by /u/nnray [link] [comments]

Guys my MacBook Pro screen won’t turn on, I’m not sure what to do. I closed the screen last night and it had something magnetic stuck on the edge. I didn’t realize this happened until I got to my internship this morning ;-; The keys work still, it’s just the screen that doesn’t work. I’m a college student and I don’t have that much to repair it + my apple care warranty ran out a few months ago. What should I do? 😭 submitted by /u/Flaky_Reading472 [link] [comments]

  • Crossover Mac (how to install and run an application from drive D: or E: instead of C:)
by /u/force73 (Mac) on November 6, 2025 at 2:21 pm

Hi everyone, I like Crossover for longer time and it works really well with games and applications on a M3 Air with 24 GB RAM. But now I need to do this: Crossover manages the Windows "drives" in form of "drive c:", "drive d:" etc. The standard way installing an application to use it within Crossover is to install or copy (if no installation is needed) to the Bottle folder directly (aka the "drive c:"). This folder is based in my userfolder on /Users/me/Crossover etc. Inside Crossover I mapped "drive d:" to a folder, that is directly connected and backuped to my NAS and it works well. I can work with applications installed to drive c: in Crossover, that use this drive d: to save stuff. All the saved stuff will backuped as expected. But now this: I now got an application that completly works inside it's own folder and saves all it's stuff there. I'd like to have this folder backuped too, therefore I'd like to move the application to "drive d:" and run it from there from within Crossover. Problem: It doesn't work that way. Always I start the application from the "drive d:" ("Open with Crossover") it not starting the application but starting the Crossover install routine with the window to select the Bottle to install etc. Is there a real way to map an external folder to Crossover and run applications from there? submitted by /u/force73 [link] [comments]

  • Karabiner: Moving cursor/mouse closes switching opened apps while pressing Alt+Tab
by /u/Physical-Artist-6997 (Mac) on November 6, 2025 at 2:04 pm

Im using Karabiner elements. My doubt is the following. As I said, im using a external keyboard (which is not Mac native) for my Mac laptop. Therefore I had to bind som keys and keys combinations for it (command tab -> alt tab and similar). Now, all my prefered keys combination are correct and well working but i have a problem. When i press alt tab on my external keyboard, it correctly opens the switching between apps UI. However, If i move the mouse the slightest (moving it 1 mm or even the slightest movement is enough), the switching UI closes inmediatly (as if releasing the Alt key) Do you know what can be the problem? To be honest, it is sooooo frustrating because i need to literally lift the mouse off the table every time I want to switch between apps submitted by /u/Physical-Artist-6997 [link] [comments]

I have been using my new M4 Air (24/512, Sequoia 15.7.1) for a little over a month and overall it's been great, but Safari's keep giving me grief. • Longevity has interesting consequences
by /u/ubermonkey (Mac) on November 6, 2025 at 1:14 pm

I've been on Macs since the late 1990s. I've had lots of them. My current one is an M1 Macbook Pro from 2021. The performance curve for normal humans now (which is to say, you're not processing video or doing AI or whatever) is pretty flat. I thought about upgrading a couple months ago -- 4 years is getting towards "a long time" for me -- but ultimately decided not to. We just bought my wife a new Air, and there's absolutely nothing WRONG with my M1, so I figured I'd let it ride another year and get whatever new hotness Apple dropped next summer. But! Then I had reason to interact with my "media server" for something in the house. Mac hardware has always lasted a good long time, and what I call my media server is actually a Macbook Pro from 2012. It has a few outboard drives attached and serves as near-storage for photos, video, and our media collection. That old workhorse is getting a little hinky. Trackpad only intermittently works. It's slow. And the degree to which iTunes on it will continue to play nice with Apple Music seems questionable. The machine itself no longer gets even security updates. So, uh, maybe it's time to replace it. Fair. I could have just bought an Air or a Mini to do that job directly, but instead I went ahead and got an M5 to replace my M1, and will demote the M1 to "media server" and retire the 2012 model. I definitely can't say I'm sad about a 13 year useful life. It joins a few other long-running Macs we've had in the Hall of Fame, actually: My wife's new Air replaced a 13" Macbook Pro from 2015. I bought it new, used it for 4 years, and in 2019 passed it to her. It still works fine, but its power adapter died around the time she started a grad program this fall, so we just got her a new one on the grounds that 10 years was enough. Mrs Ubermonkey has generally used my cast-off (2-4 year old) laptops, but a sequence of events in 2012 meant she got a brand new Air then, too. She was still using it when I handed over my '15 model in '19. AND UNTIL SIX MONTHS AGO THAT AIR WAS STILL IN USE AS OUR GODDAUGHTER'S COMPUTER. Macs, man. submitted by /u/ubermonkey [link] [comments]

  • Does the new Apple Devices App on Windows support DFU restores for Apple Silicon Macs?
by /u/JailbreakHat (Mac) on November 6, 2025 at 1:05 pm

I come across a few cases where an Apple Silicon Mac would boot into an exclamation mark and the only way to get the Mac fully working again is to DFU restore it using another computer. In Finder, you can easily DFU restore Apple Silicon Macs through Finder just like DFU restoring iPhones and iPads. On Windows, iTunes didn’t used to support DFU restoring Apple Silicon Mac’s despite supporting it on iPhones and iPads for a very long time. But I also noticed that Apple has created a new app for Windows called Apple Devices as successor to iTunes. I wonder if it is possible to DFU restore an Apple Silicon Macs through a Windows PC using this app? submitted by /u/JailbreakHat [link] [comments]

  • Mac for a wedding photographer. Mini M4 Pro vs Studio M4 Max
by /u/Intrepid-reddit-217 (Mac) on November 6, 2025 at 1:00 pm

Hey all, I’m a wedding photographer trying to pick between two Mac configs (same price) : a Mac Mini and a Mac Studio. I’m attaching two screenshots with the exact specs for each. A bit about me / my workflow: I shoot weddings and regularly import thousands of RAW images per event (Lightroom Classic + Aftershoot Ai culling, lots of batch work and export). Current machine: old 27" Intel i7 iMac (quad-core) it’s getting slooooow. My 14" MacBook Pro M1 is actually faster than that iMac, so moving to Apple Silicon is already a big upgrade I’ll most likely buy a Studio Display as well, so monitor choice is settled. I care about snappy catalogue browsing, fast previews, batch exports. I do very little video. Thanks and appreciate any honest opinions. https://preview.redd.it/ajvg2zyxwmzf1.png?width=2188&format=png&auto=webp&s=25ef7d5090e3e4bd7e299d285593a29f54f0ac13 https://preview.redd.it/83irzxyxwmzf1.png?width=2106&format=png&auto=webp&s=fb0b3a5079810599bf0ef8583558a3f173e4d6cb submitted by /u/Intrepid-reddit-217 [link] [comments]

  • Warning: Fake GitHub Repos Distributing Malware Under Developer Names
by /u/segevs (Mac) on August 19, 2025 at 10:55 am

Hey everyone, I’ve noticed a few posts about this already, but I think it’s worth repeating. Recently, a new attack tactic has surfaced where malicious actors create GitHub repos using a developer’s name and the name of a well-known Mac app. In my case, someone created a repo under my full name, claiming to offer one of my apps (Dory - App Switcher) for free. I couldn’t fully investigate the script they shared, but it’s safe to assume it wasn’t anything good. Thankfully, GitHub removed it within 30 minutes of my report - and I know other developers also flagged the user, which definitely helped. A few reminders: * Don’t trust repos with fewer than 100 stars that offer “free” versions of paid apps. * Never run scripts or pkg files from sources you don’t fully trust. * If you’re not a power user, the App Store remains the safest option. https://preview.redd.it/dn0ehjuriyjf1.png?width=3002&format=png&auto=webp&s=07c7ff240531311dfc046b3b89517d090e57ca73 https://preview.redd.it/cxzgjefsiyjf1.png?width=3008&format=png&auto=webp&s=82d64f5133501207a757175faa0c32a38909002d submitted by /u/segevs [link] [comments]
