Bezos’ Prometheus Raises $12B

It’s been just six months since Prometheus emerged from stealth with $6.2B in funding. Now, Jeff Bezos and Vik Bajaj’s industrial AI startup has raised another $12B in its Series B at a $41B valuation. Back in November, there was very little disclosed about Prometheus, and not much has changed since. In Bezos’ defense, he did said the company isn’t being secretive, just heads down. The co-CEOs spoke with CNBC today to discuss the fundraise, with Bezos outlining what the company is actually working on.

Our goal at Prometheus is building a set of tools that accelerate that invention loop. How long does it take to improve something? How long does it take to go from idea to actually manufacturing something at rate and have a useful object… This is an age-old dream, the idea that you might build a set of tools that could actually do engineering, an artificial engineer. An artificial general engineer is a dream that we’ve had for decades, but it’s never really been possible. But now it is.

The news also had me revisiting a theory John and Jordi discussed on the show last year: could this be Jeff Bezos’ version of NeXT, the company Steve Jobs started after he was fired from Apple? Of course, Bezos wasn’t fired from Amazon, but maybe Prometheus represents his return to day-to-day company building. — Jackson

OpenAI weighs price cuts to beat Anthropic LINK

• OpenAI is considering big cuts to what it charges for AI tokens, partly because it expects rival Anthropic to lower its own prices first and wants to be ready to respond.

• CEO Sam Altman has called AI costs “a huge issue” for business customers, but cutting token prices would squeeze margins as both companies already lose billions and pursue IPOs that expose their finances to public investors.

  
  
  

• The pressure follows Anthropic’s revenue surge from its coding tool Claude Code, which briefly pushed its valuation past OpenAI’s and prompted OpenAI to make its own coding tool, Codex, a priority.

Anthropic backtracks on policy that ‘sabotaged’ researchers’ work LINK

• Anthropic is reversing a hidden policy that quietly limited researchers who used its new Claude Fable 5 model to build competing AI systems, telling Wired the company “made the wrong tradeoff” and apologizing for the secrecy.

• Researchers found that Fable 5, built on Anthropic’s Mythos system, would quietly reroute requests to a weaker model or degrade responses for tasks like training competing LLMs, debugging AI code, and optimizing neural architecture.

• Anthropic isn’t dropping the safeguards but making them visible, so if it suspects a user is building a highly capable AI, it will alert them that it’s refusing the request or rerouting to a less capable model.

How Anthropic is racing to contain AI’s side effects

In the wake of releasing its most powerful AI model to date, Anthropic is also raising the red flag on the risks its technology may pose.

On Wednesday, the company released two policy proposals to responsibly steer AI development and prepare for the broader impact of the tech. The proposals address a wide number of concerns, including biological and security risks, the risks of the tech losing control, and the potential economic impacts.

Additionally, CEO Dario Amodei published an essay, titled “Policy on Exponential AI,” which advocates for increased AI regulation. His essay calls for public safety testing and auditing, preempting economic disruption, protecting against autocratic misuse and accelerating the positive impacts of AI.

“The mismatch in timescale is nevertheless very painful: in the several years that it can take Congress to act, AI can go from an amusing toy to the full country of geniuses,” Amodei said in the essay.

Anthropic’s two-pronged policy proposals include:

• The Advanced AI Framework. This multi-faceted policy outlines four major areas of AI-related risk, including biological weapons, cybersecurity and loss of control, as well as how automated research and development could amplify those risks. It proposes a set of four rules that frontier AI developers must follow, calling for transparency in safety, independent evaluations, security protections of model weights and government enforcement to prevent catastrophic risks.

• The Economic Policy Framework. This policy takes on AI’s potential to fracture our economy, setting out three sets of recommendations: One for a 5% unemployment rate and one for a 10% unemployment rate, and one for unprecedented unemployment. Some of the measures include workforce training grants, wage insurance, basic-needs relief, and even new wealth-distribution methods such as a basic income or equity sharing.

In addition, the company is committing $350 million in total for two programs to help: $150 million to a national fellowship program for early-career people to “extend the benefits of AI to communities across America,” and $200 million to its Economic Futures Research Fund.

These proposals and commitments come on the heels of the company’s release of Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most powerful models to date, as well as raising $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation and preparing for an eye-popping IPO.

Amodei warns AI is outrunning regulation

The Rundown: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei penned an essay called “Policy on the AI Exponential”, calling on AI regulation to move faster to match the ‘lightning pace’ of the industry, coming alongside policy proposals on AI testing and employment disruption.

The details:

• Amodei said Claude Mythos Preview’s hacking risks are a major turning point, making frontier models “tools of global and national strategic consequence.”

• The CEO wants regulators to have the power to ground frontier models, with Amodei proposing systems independently screened across four risk areas.

• A jobs framework aims to plan for unprecedented unemployment at several levels, including investment accounts with shares of AI companies and UBI.

• Other asks include faster approval of AI-designed drugs, limits and bans on autonomous weapons, and stronger advanced chip export controls.

Why it matters: Amodei’s comparison of Washington to the slow-moving Treebeard from Lord of the Rings is a hilarious but strong illustration of the situation. “Regulate me harder” from a market leader will read as inauthentic to skeptics, but Amodei has been sounding the alarm for a while, and the urgency is only scaling with each release.

Musk shares his space AI datacenter plans

The Rundown: SpaceX just provided the first preview of AI1, a solar-powered satellite built to run AI chips in orbit, dropping the design video three days before a market debut that’s set to be the biggest IPO in history.

The details:

• AI demand is pushing data centers into power fights on Earth, and SpaceX says orbit offers solar energy without the local grid battles seen across the U.S.

• Musk said each satellite will have as much computing power as one of Nvidia’s top server racks, with SpaceX able to change which chips go inside over time.

• To Musk, the craft is “much simpler than a Starlink satellite”, trading “super complex antennas” for solar panels, radiators, and lasers that beam data.

• SpaceX’s planned Bastrop factory could cover 11M+ square feet, with AI1 production targeted before 2028 if timelines hold.

Why it matters: Google and Anthropic have already signed on as orbital compute customers, putting two frontier labs on the other side of Sam Altman’s “ridiculous” verdict on space-based datacenters. AI1 is the first hard look at the tech behind it, and it certainly looks less like a moonshot and more like a viable manufacturing plan.

Altman ties OpenAI’s IPO timing to self-improving AI

The Rundown: OpenAI plans to go public “within the next year,” according to CEO Sam Altman’s internal Slack message to employees seen by The Information, with factors like RSI takeoff and the need for compute potentially impacting timelines.

The details:

• OpenAI filed a draft S-1 with the SEC earlier in the week, announcing the submission of the IPO paperwork, following Anthropic’s filing last week.

• Altman’s potential case for waiting: if self-improving AI looks close, it “could be advantageous to delay an IPO” instead of rushing to market during uncertainty.

• Compute may also factor into the decision, with OpenAI weighing infrastructure needs that may require hundreds of billions in financing.

• Chief scientist Jakub Pachocki also reportedly told staff a model codenamed 5.6, a “meaningful improvement” on flagship GPT-5.5, is coming this month.

Why it matters: Self-improving AI just showed up as a potential factor in IPO planning. Whatever you make of lab timelines, Altman treating the speed of a potential “RSI takeoff” as a factor in when to take public money tells you the frontier labs see it as a serious near-term business variable, not just a hyperbolic claim to boost funding.

Microsoft won’t clear the new Claude for its own staff

Claude Fable 5 went live Tuesday. By Wednesday, Microsoft had moved to limit employee use of it while company lawyers decide whether to allow it at all.

The dispute is the fine print we covered yesterday. Anthropic keeps every prompt and output that touches a Mythos-class model for 30 days, on every platform where the model runs, business customers included.

Anything its classifiers mark as a possible policy violation stays for up to two years.

Anthropic’s reasoning is that jailbreaks operate across many requests, so catching them takes a stored window of evidence. It says the data never trains models and gets deleted on schedule in almost all cases.

Microsoft’s lawyers read the same policy and saw customer data and confidential information sitting on another company’s servers for a month.

The review only covers the Mythos-class line, so Opus and Sonnet aren’t part of it.

Fable is also included on paid Claude plans only through June 22, then moves to usage credits. That gives Anthropic eleven days to convince corporate legal teams the retention window is survivable, and the first verdict is Microsoft’s.

Xbox warns of a ‘reset’ as it prepares for layoffs LINK

• Xbox bosses Asha Sharma and Matt Booty have warned staff in a memo of an “Xbox reset” over the next 100 days, coming ahead of major layoffs expected in July.

• The memo said that, excluding Activision Blizzard King, Xbox has spent over $20 billion on content, platform, and hardware subsidy in five years, while annual revenue dropped nearly half a billion.

• Sharma and Booty also pointed to a hardware component crisis, saying costs for the 2027 holiday season are expected to top five times the prices paid two years earlier, prompting calls for a new business model and hardware partnerships.

Judge denies Meta and Google new trial LINK

• A California state court judge has rejected requests by Meta and Google’s YouTube for a new trial, after a jury found both companies liable for designing social media platforms that harm young people.

• The jury decided Meta and YouTube were negligent in operating their platforms, harming a 20-year-old plaintiff named Kaley, and assigned Meta 70 percent of the responsibility compared to 30 percent for YouTube.

• Judge Carolyn Kuhl dismissed the argument that Section 230 shields the companies, writing the law does not cover their design choices, and both Meta and Google said they plan to appeal.

Visa plugs its payment network into ChatGPT LINK

• Visa is working with OpenAI to plug its payments tools into OpenAI’s agent system, letting AI agents spend money for users and complete transactions without people manually checking out every time.

• Users can set spending caps, merchant restrictions and approval requirements, while Visa handles fraud detection, chargebacks and refunds, and the companies say the setup could support shopping, business invoice payments and AI coding agents buying APIs.

• Visa’s Rubail Birwadker said more than one in five transactions are influenced by what users learn through LLMs, and the experience could end up feeling similar to shopping with Apple Pay or Shop Pay.
