Nobel laureate leaves DeepMind for Anthropic LINK

• John Jumper, who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in chemistry for the AlphaFold protein-prediction model, is leaving Google DeepMind after nearly nine years to join Anthropic, the maker of Claude, both companies confirmed Friday.

• Jumper announced the move on X, crediting DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis for letting him lead the AlphaFold team six months after his PhD, and said he would take time off before starting his new role.

• Neither Jumper nor Anthropic disclosed his role, though the hire fits the company’s push into life sciences, following its $400 million stock purchase of biotech startup Coefficient Bio in April.

Trump says Anthropic is no longer a national security threat LINK

• President Trump said in an Axios interview published June 19 that he no longer sees Anthropic as a national security threat, two days after meeting CEO Dario Amodei at the G7 summit in France.

• The shift followed a June 17 G7 working lunch where Amodei and Demis Hassabis pitched a US-led AI coalition, though the Commerce Department’s June 12 order restricting foreign access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5 stays in force.

Norway bans AI in elementary schools LINK

• Norway is set to bar children between the ages of 6 and 13 from using AI in elementary schools, with the near-ban taking effect in late August across the country.

• Meta has lobbied Congress to add a provision to the Kids Online Safety Act that would grant platforms immunity from state-level child-harm lawsuits involving users under 18, possibly undercutting thousands of cases already filed.

• The proposed language would make companies immune from state-law claims tied to the safety or privacy of minors online, and it would also override certain state laws governing children’s online protections.

• According to a source, Meta offered to drop its opposition to KOSA if the provision is included, while Senator Marsha Blackburn’s office said it had not seen the language and would not support it.

VLC creator now wants to control robots LINK

• Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the lead developer of VLC Media Player, has raised $5 million for his startup Kyber, an infrastructure layer built to control remote devices like robots and drones in real time.

• Kyber’s core product is an SDK that synchronises video, audio, sensor data, and control inputs, and Kempf showed it reaching 8 milliseconds of glass-to-glass latency, building the platform on top of FFmpeg and VLC.

• The Paris-based company, already deployed with customers in defence, telco, robotics, and AI, is prioritising robotics, drones, and remote IT access, where Kempf positions it as a challenger to Citrix.

Google copies Nvidia’s playbook to sell AI chips LINK

• Google is challenging Nvidia by borrowing its own financing tactics, using financial guarantees and “circular financing” to win data-centre customers for its tensor processing units, or TPUs, according to a Wall Street Journal investigation.

• At the Lake Mariner cluster in western New York, Google has provided a $3.2bn guarantee, letting developers TeraWulf and FluidStack raise cheaper debt and rent thousands of TPUs to Anthropic, the same trick Nvidia used to stoke demand.

• Google is backstopping more Anthropic projects with this logic, including a $7bn data centre called River Bend near Baton Rouge and $1.4bn in guarantees for a computing lease in Colorado City, Texas.

New unpatchable exploit hits older iPhones LINK

• Security firm Paradigm Shift released “usbliter8,” a new BootROM exploit hitting Apple’s A12 and A13 chips, which cannot be patched and affects iPhones from the XS through the iPhone 11 series.

• The exploit abuses a bug in the USB controller, where sending unusually small packets makes an internal hardware pointer walk backwards through memory, writing data to places it should never reach during startup.

• A12 devices are easy to take over, while A13 chips were much harder because of Pointer Authentication Codes; once controlled, the exploit installs a handler that boots unsigned software and survives restarts.

US suspects ASML’s banned chip tool reached China LINK

• U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has told ASML executives he suspects one of the Dutch company’s banned EUV lithography machines, the only tools capable of printing the most advanced chip patterns, may have reached China.

• Administration officials told Bloomberg they have evidence that ASML shipped EUV-related components and transport equipment to China but have repeatedly declined to show it, while the company insists no such machine has ever existed there.

• A sale would breach export controls barring ASML from selling EUV to China since the first Trump administration, risking the roughly 20% of its 2026 revenue from already-permitted China sales and its standing as Europe’s most valuable company.

US regulators give AI data centers a grid fast lane LINK

• The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission ordered grid operators across the country to show how they will speed up the connection of AI data centers to transmission systems while keeping grids reliable and costs down.

• The orders went to six grid regions covering over 200 million people in 30 states, including PJM, and lay out five categories for reforms such as efficient connection studies and preventing “cost shifting” to ratepayers.

• Grid operators must give initial responses within 60 days, with added details on “resource adequacy” 30 days later, and the orders also push projects that pair new data centers with new power generation.

EU set to declare AWS and Azure gatekeepers LINK

• The European Commission plans to release preliminary findings as soon as next week saying Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure appear to qualify as gatekeepers under the Digital Markets Act, with a final decision expected by late 2026.

• If designated, AWS and Azure would face interoperability requirements, curbs on customer lock-in, and restrictions on self-preferencing, with fines reaching up to 10% of global turnover, rising to 20% for repeated breaches.

Tim Cook says higher prices are “unavoidable” because of AI LINK

• Apple CEO Tim Cook told The Wall Street Journal that the company will raise prices because the cost of memory and storage chips has surged, driven by demand from artificial intelligence companies.

• Cook would not say when the increases will start, how large they will be, or which products they will hit, but he said the prices for these chips have quadrupled over the past year.

Midjourney is developing a full-body ultrasonic scanner LINK

• Midjourney, the company behind the text-to-image AI tool, has announced the Midjourney Scanner, a medical machine designed to scan a person’s entire body in just 60 seconds using ultrasonic waves.

• After stepping onto a platform, you are lowered into water at 2 inches per second through a ring of half a million tiny squares, each emitting ultrasonic waves and recording the ripples that bounce back.

• The scanner produces a 3D map of your body down to a fraction of a millimeter, resembling an MRI but nearly 100 times faster, with Midjourney building spas in San Francisco to house the machines next year.

OpenAI’s losses just exploded nearly 8X LINK

• OpenAI’s net loss attributable to the company jumped from $5.09 billion in 2024 to $38.53 billion in 2025, according to audited financial documents independently verified by the Financial Times.

• In 2025, OpenAI had $13.07 billion in revenue against $34 billion in total costs and expenses, including $19.18 billion on research and development, leaving a $20.92 billion loss from operations.

• Converting from a non-profit to a for-profit triggered a $41.55 billion loss from changes in fair value, pushing the net loss to $60.35 billion before $21.82 billion was removed via noncontrolling interests.

Facebook’s new AI knows more about you than you think LINK

• Facebook is rolling out “AI Mode,” a new way to search the platform using Meta AI, which pulls answers from public posts across Facebook, including Groups and Reels, instead of showing a list of results.

• Rather than scrolling through search results, users can ask a question in plain language and get a synthesized answer based on what people are actively discussing across the platform.

Nvidia joins the AI debt boom LINK

• Nvidia is raising at least $20 billion through bonds, its first such sale since 2021, joining other tech companies that have taken on debt to fund the AI buildout, Bloomberg reports.

• The chipmaker is offering the bonds in seven tranches with maturities running from two to 30 years, and the longest tranche carries a spread of about 0.9 percentage points above U.S. Treasuries.

• Nvidia plans to use the money for general corporate purposes, including refinancing existing debt, with JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs among the banks managing the sale.

Chrome is closing the last loophole for ad blockers LINK

• Google is ending support for Manifest V2 extensions in Chrome versions 150 and 151, a move that will break many popular ad blockers built on that older technology over the next couple of releases.

• Under Manifest V3, extensions can no longer intercept data dynamically, so the new compliant ad blockers on the Chrome Web Store rely on predefined lists to work, making them less effective than before.

• People who want to avoid Chrome’s strict Manifest V3 rules can switch to Mozilla’s Firefox, which supports both Manifest V2 and V3 at the same time, or try a VPN with ad-blocking services like NordVPN.

Threads just hit half a billion users LINK

• Meta’s Threads app has passed half a billion users, hitting 500 million monthly users this month and adding about 100 million new users since last August, with the company crediting its “communities” feature for the recent growth.

• Meta claims growth is now more organic as more people open Threads directly instead of clicking through Instagram or Facebook, and it pointed to gains in Asia, where time spent rose 80 percent in South Korea and 130 percent in Japan.

• Meta hasn’t shared daily active users since October, when Threads reached 150 million, and the app still doesn’t drive revenue, with CFO Susan Li saying in April it won’t be a “meaningful driver” of revenue growth in 2026.

Anthropic sends top engineers to the White House LINK

• Anthropic dispatched senior staff to the White House on Sunday to reach a deal with the Trump Administration after a federal order forced the company to disable its flagship Claude models the previous Friday.

• The export control order required that non-U.S. nationals be blocked from using Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5, two “Mythos-class” models built on the same core technology as the unreleased Claude Mythos Preview.

• The Trump Administration has been unsatisfied with Anthropic’s handling of the jailbreak complaint, with the company reportedly failing to “engage in a serious manner” after officials raised the issue on Friday before the models went offline.

Microsoft CEO warns a few companies will grab all AI value LINK

• Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has warned that a handful of AI providers could capture most of the economic value in the AI age, while entire industries risk losing ownership of their own knowledge and expertise.

• In a post on X, Nadella argued that winners will not be those with the most advanced models, but companies that build their own learning system around their expertise, comparing frontier models to an engine and the vehicle built around it as the real differentiator.

• He said every firm needs both human capital, meaning the knowledge and judgment of its people, and token capital, the AI it builds and owns, warning against repeating the outsourcing mistakes that hollowed out industrial economies during globalisation.

China vows payback after Pentagon blacklists its tech giants LINK

• China has warned the United States that it could retaliate after the Pentagon added major Chinese companies, including Alibaba, Baidu, BYD, and NIO, to a list tied to Beijing’s military.

• The updated Section 1260H list, which US law requires the Defense Department to refresh yearly through 2030, also names solar panel makers Trina Solar and JA Solar Technology, and companies can submit evidence to challenge the label.

• Alibaba said there was “no basis” for its inclusion, noting the 1260H list does not automatically ban exports or block American customers, unlike the Commerce Department’s separate Entity List that limits access to US technology.
