• Anthropic plans to develop its own drugs, an unusual step for a major AI company that puts it in the position of selling software to the same drugmakers it may soon compete against.

• The move follows Anthropic’s launch of Claude Science, an “AI workbench for scientists” that combines scattered tools and datasets into one environment and creates figures and visuals for biotech and pharma customers.

• Anthropic shared few details, declining to say which diseases it will target first, but it has been hiring biologists, building its own wet labs, and recruiting staff from Big Pharma and academic institutions.

Google Maps is building in-app food ordering LINK

• Google Maps is preparing an in-app food ordering feature, which would place your order on your behalf so that it’s ready by the time you arrive at the restaurant.

• The clues turned up in a new version of Google Maps for Android, where new text strings describe the feature, though no actual food ordering options are live in the app yet.

• ByteDance’s Seed AI team says in a new research paper that AI agents can double their learning speed every three months by interacting with real-world environments over long periods, a finding that could keep the AI boom going.

• The discovery matters because developers long relied on feeding systems more data and computing power during initial training, but figures like OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy warn this brute-force approach cannot last forever.

• To study how agents learn after deployment, the team built EdgeBench, a benchmarking suite of 134 ultra-long-horizon tasks across software engineering, scientific discovery, formal mathematics, and knowledge work, each needing at least 12 hours of continuous operation.

Midjourney wants Hollywood studios to reveal how they use AI LINK

• Midjourney is asking a federal court to force Warner Bros. Discovery, Disney and Universal Studios to reveal how they use artificial intelligence in their own shows and movies, as part of its defense against the studios’ copyright lawsuit.

• Midjourney wants the studios to hand over their AI business plans, research reports, training datasets, model weights and board meeting presentations, but a magistrate judge in mid-June let them withhold most of that beyond “consumer-facing” AI applications.

• Midjourney argues that if the studios train their own models on copyrighted works, it supports its fair use and unclean hands defenses, and the judge’s ruling could set a precedent for what evidence future lawsuits allow.

Chipmakers urge White House to leave the memory market alone LINK

• SEMI, a chip industry group representing major semiconductor firms and memory makers, has sent a letter to the White House asking it not to intervene in the memory market in ways that distort pricing or capacity choices.

• The letter, addressed to four Trump administration secretaries, instead pushed for narrower steps like tax deductions or credits to lower consumer electronics prices and defended the long-term purchase contracts some companies use to source memory chips.

• SEMI, which counts Micron, SK hynix, and Samsung as members, said the industry expects to grow memory production capacity by 19% annually, yet demand is still expected to exceed supply for the foreseeable future.

Meta says its next AI matches GPT-5.5 performance LINK

• Meta’s superintelligence chief Alexandr Wang told employees in an internal town hall that the company’s upcoming AI model, codenamed Watermelon, has caught up with OpenAI’s flagship GPT-5.5 model on closely followed AI benchmarks he did not name.

Leaked Microsoft project reveals an AI-first Copilot OS LINK

• Leaked images and videos surfacing on the BetaWiki discord point to “Project Aion”, a lightweight Windows operating system reportedly built on Edge and driven by AI agents, with Copilot placed at the core of the shell.

• While Aion’s shell interface looks much like Windows 11, the biggest change is that the Start button is replaced by the Copilot key, echoing Satya Nadella’s 2023 comparison of that key to the original Start button.

• Under the hood, Aion is shown running on Win3, a minimalist codebase with no Win32 legacy app support, and appears to work on AOSP too, suggesting it may have evolved into Microsoft’s recently announced Project Solara.

Zuckerberg admits Meta’s AI agents are progressing slower than hoped LINK

• Mark Zuckerberg told Meta staff that work on AI agent technology has not moved as fast as the company expected, though he insisted its “journey to superintelligence” is still on track and will take time.

• Speaking at an internal town hall on Thursday, Zuckerberg said Meta is pouring tens of billions of dollars into talent and infrastructure, and expects to see some benefits within the next three to six months.

• He pointed to how competitive the AI landscape has become, saying the journey will take hard work, as the company balances its push for speed with trust, morale, and buy-in from workers building the models.

Tesla launches six-seat Model Y L in the US LINK

• Tesla has launched the Model Y Long Wheelbase in the US and Puerto Rico, a stretched version of its electric SUV with a three-row, six-seat layout, starting at $61,990 for the Launch Series.

• The cabin swaps the second-row bench for heated and ventilated captain’s chairs, adds heated reclining third-row seats, and offers 89 cubic feet of cargo space even with all six seats in use.

• The SUV goes 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds with an estimated 325 miles of range, and includes a 16-inch touchscreen, Grok AI, and 12 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised).

Spotify removes 500000 fake streams tied to betting markets LINK

• Spotify deleted around 500,000 artificial streams from Malcolm Todd’s song “Earrings” after its sudden jump to the top of the daily U.S. chart drew concern from prediction market traders who bet on chart results.

• Trader Caleb Davies flagged the overnight rise, saying it had a roughly 1 in 77 octillion chance of being natural, and suspects bots inflated streams to win money on Kalshi, where the market drew about $3 million in trades.

• After removing the fake plays, Spotify corrected its charts, dropping “Earrings” to fourth place, and said it would add extra checks before publishing chart data, though Kalshi had already paid out winners based on the wrong figures.

Alibaba bans Claude over backdoor security fears LINK

• Alibaba has told all employees to remove Anthropic’s products, including Claude Code, from their machines after an internal security audit found the AI coding assistant carried what the company calls potential embedded backdoor risks.

• The ban takes effect July 10 and covers the whole Anthropic lineup, including its Sonnet, Opus, and Fable model families, ending a program that let engineers claim up to $1,400 a month for outside AI tools.

• Developers who reverse-engineered Claude Code said versions from April 2026 onward contained code that checks the local timezone and API or proxy settings against keywords for Chinese cloud providers, though Anthropic called part of it experimental.

Altman pitches US-led AI safety forum, government stake

The Rundown: Sam Altman just used an FT op-ed to call for a U.S.-led forum that would set AI safety standards and decide who can use the most advanced models — landing just as another FT report said OAI discussed giving the U.S. a 5% stake.

The details:

• The op-ed came out of June’s G7 summit in France, where Altman says he and other AI executives sat with heads of government to talk through AI regulation.

• Altman pointed to the IAEA during the Cold War to police atomic energy, plus aviation and banking rules, as proof of concept for an international referee.

• OAI also reportedly floated a 5% government stake in the company, also pushing for other U.S. labs to pay into a dividend fund to redistribute wealth.

• Altman said “democratic institutions must not cede their responsibilities to AI labs“, and that “citizens and their elected representatives must make the rules.”

Why it matters: Both the equity and regulation discussions are gaining steam, with the latter growing more important in light of the Mythos saga. But as former White House AI advisor Dean W. Ball said, the question is whether the AI wealth is given directly to households, or to a government that may or may not deliver on its promises.

TML, Bridgewater show the power of specialized AI

The Rundown: Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines Lab and Bridgewater published research testing top models on news filtering investment tasks, with a small custom AI trained on the fund’s judgment outscoring every frontier model while costing far less.

The details:

• GPT, Claude, and Gemini variants averaged ~50% accuracy on six tasks, which included flagging emails, headlines, and reports of importance for an analyst.

• Prompts written by the fund’s own investors lifted scores into the mid-70s, still shy of the 80% mark Bridgewater says analysts need to trust a tool daily.

• Training the open Qwen3-235B model on expert-graded examples via TML’s Tinker platform resulted in an 84.7% on the fund’s tests, at 13.8x less cost.

• Murati framed the project as “experts improving AI that empowers experts,” with Bridgewater planning models for more specialized tasks across the firm.

Why it matters: The assumption used to be that the frontier would steamroll smaller, specialized models, but TML and Bridgewater’s numbers show how powerful (and cost-effective) those solutions can be. Companies don’t always need a model that does everything, just one that is the best at their highly specialized work.

Microsoft apes the labs:

The hottest gig in Silicon Valley today (apart from AI researcher) is the forward-deployed engineer. A sort of embedded sales engineer, FDEs are expected to parachute into enterprises and help them become fully AI-pilled. OpenAI is investing in the effort. Anthropic, too. And now Microsoft is joining the fun, with a $2.5 program called ‘Microsoft Frontier Company.’ Where will the value accrue in the AI race? At a minimum, in the pockets of our FDE legions.

Cloudflare takes on Google:

Irked that some search engines are trying indexing to AI accessibility, Cloudflare will allow (and prompt) websites that use its services to automatically block agents and AI training runs by default. Search indexing will be allowed by default, naturally. Whether Cloudflare has enough market clout to force major search engines to change their tune on this matter remains to be seen, but you have to love an iconoclastic tech company taking on hyperscalers directly.

Z.ai goes to the (coding) mattresses:

Claude Code has proved a gusher for Anthropic; Codex is performing well for OpenAI. Now Z.ai, the makers of the popular GLM family of open-ish models, is getting in on the fun. For between $18 and $160 per month, you can use Z.ai’s AI models and its new Zcode harness instead of an American offering. The prices aren’t too different from what we see from domestic AI labs in raw dollar terms; let’s see how the market reacts. As Z.ai is public, we’ll get the numbers in due time!

OpenAI offers the US government a 5% ownership stake LINK

• OpenAI has offered the US government a 5% stake in the company, worth around $42.6 billion, as the ChatGPT maker tries to ease mounting political pressure in Washington, according to a Financial Times report.

• The $42.6 billion figure is based on the $852 billion price that investors put on OpenAI three months ago, and Sam Altman reportedly wants Anthropic, Google and Meta to hand over a similar 5% cut too.

• Altman has discussed the plan with President Trump, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, but Senator Bernie Sanders dismissed it, instead wanting a one-off 50% tax on shares of OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI.

SpaceX showed investors a phone-like AI device LINK

• SpaceX reportedly built a prototype handset that runs on its own operating system and folds in AI from Elon Musk’s xAI, showing the device to investors during a roadshow ahead of its recently completed IPO.

• According to the Wall Street Journal, the device has a design slimmer than an iPhone and would use a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, though SpaceX told investors the project is early and might never reach production.

• The prototype reportedly draws on the “everything app” concept Musk has pushed since buying Twitter, now X, and could give him a consumer platform for his companies’ technology while cutting his reliance on outside hardware makers.

Apple wants to sell 10 million foldable iPhones LINK

• Apple has raised its production target for the foldable iPhone Ultra to around 10 million units, roughly a third more than the 7 to 8 million units estimated in earlier reports, according to Nikkei Asia.

• The foldable iPhone Ultra is expected to carry a premium price, with IDC predicting an average selling price of $2500 and storage options priced as high as $3000 when it arrives this year.

• Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone Ultra in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, though the foldable model could launch after those Pro phones while still shipping during 2026.

Nvidia will trade compute for a cut of startups’ profits LINK

• Nvidia is launching a partnership program that gives fast-growing AI startups access to compute power and token credits, and in exchange those companies will share a portion of their future product and cloud revenue with the chipmaker.

• The program names two initial partners supplying the compute: Australia-based Sharon AI will deploy up to 40,000 Nvidia GPUs, while Firmus Technologies is building a data center in Batam, Indonesia that could house up to 170,000 GPUs.

• Nvidia is positioning itself as an intermediary helping startups reach full-stack computing, a response to scarce GPU access and liquidity problems that have pushed AI firms into revenue and equity-sharing deals with chipmakers.

Apple in talks with two banned Chinese RAM makers after price hikes LINK

• Apple is reportedly in negotiations with two banned Chinese memory makers, CXMT and YMTC, to buy RAM for products sold in China, a move that would likely need clearance from the United States government.

• Both companies sit on the Pentagon’s ban list, so Apple has been lobbying the Trump administration and Washington for permission before adding them as memory chip suppliers, according to reports from The Financial Times and Bloomberg.

• The talks follow Apple raising prices on Macs, iPads, and other products in June, blaming a global memory shortage and higher component costs, though iPhone prices haven’t gone up yet ahead of new models in September.
