Anthropic eyes $10B Meta compute deal LINK

• Meta is in talks to lease data center compute to Anthropic in a deal worth up to $10 billion over multiple years, according to the New York Times, though either side could still walk away.

• Anthropic pitched the arrangement in June, and Meta is still reviewing it, seeing a chance to monetize excess capacity that CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he might sell if the company’s own AI demand slowed down.

• Anthropic has already signed a separate $45 billion deal and is hiring former Google executives to build its own data centers, while Meta wants to recoup its heavy spending on AI infrastructure.

AWS bug billed some customers billions LINK

• An Amazon Web Services glitch in the billing portal shocked some cloud customers on Friday with estimates claiming they owed millions or even billions of dollars for services they never actually used.

• Amazon said the trouble started late Thursday and traced it to its billing computation subsystem, but a rollback of a recent change failed to fix the problem, which was expected to drag on for several more hours.

• Screenshots posted on Reddit showed one customer facing a roughly $2.5 billion estimate for the month, with others ranging into the hundreds of millions, though Amazon confirmed the numbers don’t reflect real usage or charges.

SpaceX may sell Pentagon AI computing LINK

• SpaceX is in talks with the Pentagon to rent out its data-center space for running AI models, an arrangement that could cost the Department of Defense billions of dollars, though the discussions could still collapse.

• Musk has built up unused computing power in Memphis, with his AI startup xAI, now part of SpaceX, tapping only 11 percent of its total capacity, so selling the surplus could bring in badly needed money.

• SpaceX lost $5 billion last year while xAI burned through $6.4 billion, and the deal would extend Musk’s ties to the military, which already gave him Space Force contracts worth $2.29 billion and $4.16 billion in May.

Databricks hits $188B valuation:

Yes, the data analytics leader remains private, and it’s accepting $3 billion in a fresh fundraising round, let by Coatue Management, at an astronomical $188B valuation. (That’s a 40% jump from its last valuation, which was only in December.) The company designs systems allowing enterprises to safely store and process their data, while building AI applications on top of it. The rush to reduce token costs while opening up more diverse model selections (including open source) has played right into their thesis. A particularly timely new feature — Unity AI Gateway — even helps companies track their spending on various AI models.

Are Fable 5’s guardrails too narrow?:

Satya Nadella thinks so. In a meeting with Copilot engineers this week, the Microsoft CEO reportedly argued that Anthropic’s Fable model feels “editorially controlled,” and refuses too many requests that don’t pose immediate national or cyber security threats. “It doesn’t make sense,” he added, according to attendees who provided a copy of his remarks to CNBC. Fable 5, of course, is Anthropic’s attempt to safely release its powerful Mythos 5 model to the general public. (Both models were held back due to its potential for misuse in developing bioweapons, cybersecurity threats, and so forth.) It now appears that the AI lab’s attempts to rein in Mythos may have hurt its everyday usability, opening the door for competitive releases from rival frontier labs along with Chinese open source projects.

Hundreds of Netflix originals were made with AI:

In a letter to shareholders alongside its Q2 earnings report, the streamer revealed that about 300 original programs already in its library utilized generative AI at some point in their production process. These include the historical docuseries “The American Experiment” along with a number of international titles. In addition to helping with pre- and post-production tasks, some AI outputs are actually featured on screen. Netflix credits the technology with helping to create “highly complex sequences” such as battles and large-scale crowd scenes that would not have been otherwise feasible to produce. In March, Netflix acquired InterPositive, a startup from founder/filmmaker Ben Affleck that provides content creators with a suite of AI tools.

China just erased America’s AI lead LINK

• Moonshot AI, a Beijing company, has caught up to America’s top AI systems with its new Kimi K3 model, matching leading U.S. tools weeks after their release while charging far less to use.

• In tests by AI evaluator Arena, Kimi K3 beat Anthropic’s Fable 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol on front-end coding, and topped Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 in text ranking while costing 40% less.

• Moonshot plans to release Kimi as an open-weight model on July 27, letting companies and governments customize it and run it on their own systems, pressuring the pricing and valuations of U.S. labs.

Google delays Gemini 3.5 Pro over coding LINK

• The delay has reportedly worried Google engineers and researchers who fear falling behind Anthropic and OpenAI, and sources blame the company’s layered internal reviews plus the effort to weave AI across Search, Maps, and YouTube.

• Google updated Gemini’s training data late last month to sharpen its coding, but the results disappointed, and employees say limited computing power for generating code continues to hold back their productivity on the model.

Netflix used AI in nearly 300 titles LINK

• Netflix said it used artificial intelligence in roughly 300 titles this year, mostly for post-production work, and told shareholders in its second-quarter letter that it plans to keep expanding this use.

• Shows including “Glory” in India, “Brasil 70: A Saga do Tri” in Brazil, and “The American Experiment” in the United States relied on generative AI to build complicated sequences faster than human visual effects artists.

• The company is buying startups and setting up special studios to grow its AI work, but stressed that people must still oversee the results and that it wants to support creators rather than replace whole teams.

Brain implant lets paralysed man eat LINK

• Keith Thomas, a New York man paralysed from the chest down after a 2020 swimming accident, can now feed himself and drink from a cup using a brain implant that bypasses his damaged spinal cord.

• The “double neural bypass,” built by Prof Chad Bouton’s team at the Feinstein Institutes, uses brain electrodes to detect when Thomas wants to move his arms, while hand sensors send touch signals back to recreate the feeling of contact.

• After 35 weeks of training his right arm grew 86% stronger and his left 62%, and a method called cortical mirroring restored feeling to a numb area, with these gains lasting more than two years even when switched off.

Xi pitches China to lead global AI LINK

• At the opening of China’s biggest yearly AI event, President Xi Jinping made the case for his country to steer worldwide AI development, backing a more open approach and greater help for poorer nations in the Global South.

• Xi warned against creating “new historical injustices” as AI spreads, and he pushed countries to keep the technology “secure and controllable” while building stronger awareness of the risks that come with it.

• He criticized the way AI is increasingly treated as a security matter, saying nations should oppose stretching national security claims too far or putting one country’s safety above others, as export controls and blacklists tighten access to the technology.

OpenAI’s first gadget is a $230 keyboard LINK

• OpenAI has put out its first piece of hardware, a $230 mechanical keyboard called the kbd-1.0-codex-micro, made with Work Louder and built to control the company’s Codex coding agent.

• Each Agent Key shows live RGB colors tied to Codex, letting you see whether an agent is thinking, running, waiting, or finished without having to switch between open chats.

• The keyboard, sold in clicky and silent versions, has a joystick that launches Codex jobs like reviewing a pull request or debugging, plus a dial that changes how much reasoning the agent applies.

Apple seeks chip startups for AI LINK

• Apple is reportedly talking with bankers and semiconductor startups about buying one to strengthen the server chips it builds for running AI, according to a report from The Information.

• The move follows problems with Apple’s own AI servers, which run on its M2 Ultra chips, while its next server chip, code-named Baltra, has slipped past a planned 2026 launch.

• A large purchase would break from Apple’s habit of buying smaller startups, though it recently spent close to $2 billion on Israeli AI firm Q.ai and held talks with PrismML.

Murati’s startup launches first AI model LINK

• Thinking Machines Lab, the startup founded by former OpenAI executive Mira Murati in early 2025, released its first AI model called Inkling, moving the company from research previews to a full public launch.

• Inkling reasons across text, images, and audio, adjusts its effort to balance cost against performance, and is a mixture-of-experts model with 975 billion total parameters and a context window of up to 1 million tokens.

• The open-weight model, which the company admits is not the strongest available, can be downloaded and fine-tuned on Thinking Machines’ Tinker platform, the paid service that earns revenue from customers like hedge fund Bridgewater Associates.

TSMC to invest another $100B in US LINK

• TSMC, the main maker of AI chips and a key Nvidia supplier, pledged on Thursday to spend another $100 billion in Arizona, on top of the $165 billion it has already committed to build chip factories there.

• The extra money would probably fund four more plants in Arizona, including one for advanced packaging, adding to eight already being built or planned, though the timing depends on the market, CEO C.C. Wei said.

• The pledge came as TSMC posted a record quarterly profit of $22 billion, up 77%, and raised its 2026 spending forecast to as much as $64 billion, citing strong AI demand it expects to last through 2030.

Weco’s AI agent evolves a better version of itself

The Rundown: AI research team Weco says it demonstrated early recursive self-improvement with an automated agent, AIDE² , redesigning its own research process over eight days and besting a version engineers had refined for two years.

The details:

• AIDE² runs two connected cycles, with one agent working on research problems and another second revising how the first searches for solutions.

• Across an eight-day run, the system tested 100 rewrites and kept seven upgrades, rejecting most of its own ideas when they failed to improve results.

• The two best versions beat the hand-built one on all three benchmarks given, with tests ranging from physics-based weather forecasting to engineering.

• Cheating also surprisingly fell, with the revised agent gaming scores on just 34% of tests, vs. 63% at the start and 42% for the hand-built agent.

Why it matters: Self-improving AI is the key development many believe is needed for a full intelligence explosion, and data continues to mount from labs big and small that the breakthrough is coming soon. When agents and models can reliably work all day refining and improving themselves, the ceiling for capabilities becomes hard to fathom.

OpenAI’s first device is screen-free LINK

• OpenAI is reportedly building its first consumer hardware device, a screen-free home companion centered on ChatGPT that Bloomberg says is described internally as a “humanlike AI companion that lives in the home.”

• Instead of just answering voice commands like a normal smart speaker, the device is meant to learn about its owner over time and pull from their digital life, including emails, while including moving mechanical parts to feel more like a companion.

• Former Apple engineers who worked on the iPhone and Mac have reportedly joined the project, which comes as Apple sued OpenAI last week, claiming a former employee took confidential files about unreleased products, allegations OpenAI denies.

China approves Apple Intelligence LINK

• China’s internet regulator, the Cyberspace Administration of China, has cleared Apple Intelligence, the set of AI tools that summarize emails, write reports, and edit photos, for use on iPhones sold in the country.

• The approval covers only iPhones, and the official notice did not say whether iPads or Mac computers sold in China would also be allowed to run the AI features; Apple has not commented.

• Apple Intelligence and Samsung’s Galaxy AI were the only foreign services approved among seven, with local vendors Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE also cleared, while Baidu said it is building Apple’s China features.

White House launches AI cyber defense LINK

• The White House has created a new group called “Gold Eagle” that unites AI developers and critical service providers to strengthen national cybersecurity by sharing information about software flaws found by AI systems.

• Set up after an executive order President Trump signed on June 2, the group includes the White House, Homeland Security, the Treasury, the Department of War, and private companies handling US critical infrastructure and open-source software.

• Gold Eagle has begun receiving and ranking vulnerability reports across industries, using AI to cut down duplicate scanning and quickly pass threat and repair details to those defending federal and private sector systems.

Meta used AI to target disabled workers for layoffs, lawsuit claims LINK

• Twenty-six current and former Meta workers have sued the company in a Northern California federal court, claiming it used AI tools to help pick who lost their jobs in the roughly 8,000 layoffs in May.

• The suit says Meta scored and ranked staff using systems like its Metamate chatbot, AI usage dashboards, and keystroke-monitoring data, marking lower output during medical, parental, or disability leave as underperformance rather than adjusting for the time away.

• The plaintiffs want a judge to pause their firings, order an independent audit, and recalculate the selections without counting protected leave, while Meta says the claims “lack merit” and that people, not AI, made the decisions.
