What are US or Canadian cities that are safe, have plenty of good unique shopping, are lower in humidity but not ultra low like Nevada, have no natural disasters like tornadoes?
Safe US and Canadian cities include Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Montreal. All of these cities are lower in humidity than most US cities, have no natural disasters like tornadoes, and offer plenty of unique shopping options. Calgary is especially known for its outdoor activities and vibrant nightlife, while Edmonton is a great choice for those looking for a more laid-back atmosphere. If Winter is an issue, Vancouver only is an excellent option. Vancouver is also the best option for for those who want to enjoy the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, and Montreal is perfect for those who want to experience French culture without leaving North America. No matter what your interests are, you’re sure to find a safe city in the US or Canada that’s perfect for you.
For US cities without the Winter (not including the MidWest), I’ll include this excellent analysis by Peter Wade from Quora:
Step 1: Find US cities with a nice humidity level
Scientists say the optimal humidity level for comfort is between 35% and 55%. Nevada and Arizona are too dry, and Florida and Louisiana are too humid. If we aim for the yellow and light green areas, I think you’ll be quite comfortable. Since you originally stipulated very low humidity, even pleasant places like the San Diego and San Francisco areas will have to be eliminated. We’re going to get the humidity levels as low as we can without putting you in the desert.
Also, Hawaii and Alaska are not pictured. But any city big enough in those states to satisfy your preference for adequate shopping experiences would be disqualified by having humidity higher than what you desire. As a note, northwest Washington is within the highest humidity zone, but that does not equate to discomfort because of their moderate temperatures. But I’ll stay true to your question and will objectively search for very low humidity rather than inserting my personal opinion.
Step 2: Identify sufficiently populated US cities with adequate shopping
It’s hard to guess exactly what shopping opportunities are acceptable to you. But within the zone pictured above are 43 cities with more than 75,000 inhabitants. You’ll have to decide what population is too small for you (2020 U.S. Census populations included below). You’ve also stipulated cities rather than metropolitan areas, so keep in mind that some of these cities are smaller, but are suburbs of major metro areas and thus close to a significant amount of shopping.

Step 3: Eliminate cities with an above average risk of natural disasters
The question specifically identified tornados as a concern with a preference for no natural disasters at all. In another Quora post, I revealed that no areas in the regions we’re considering are completely free of natural disasters. It is nearly impossible to escape some degree of risk. But we’ll get that rate as low as possible. We would definitely want to eliminate cities with a higher risk of hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and wildfires.
That will knock out a few of our candidates in California, Oklahoma, and Texas. Other disasters like mudslides and flooding would only be risks in specific areas of town and wouldn’t disqualify an entire city from contention. I also analyzed wildfires, drought, blizzards, and every other type of disaster.
Step 4: Assess the crime rate in each city
The only thing left to do is to rank the 24 remaining candidates by crime rate to provide a top 5 list of cities that best fit your criteria.
Crime rate: 352.7 violent crimes per 100,000 people
3.) Centennial, Colorado
Average humidity: 51.5%
Metro population: 2,963,821 (Denver)
Natural disaster risk: Low (33.14%)
Crime rate: 180.9 violent crimes per 100,000 people
4.) Lakewood, Colorado
Average humidity: 51.6%
Metro population: 2,963,821 (Denver)
Natural disaster risk: Low (33.14%)
Crime rate: 644.1 violent crimes per 100,000 people
5.) Loveland, Colorado
Average humidity: 52.2%
Metro population: 359,066 (Fort Collins)
Natural disaster risk: Relatively low (41.65%)
Crime rate: 281.5 violent crimes per 100,000 people
Conclusion:
There are many US and Canadian cities that are safe, have plenty of good unique shopping, and are lower in humidity but not ultra low like Nevada. Some of these cities also have no natural disasters like tornadoes. Safe US and Canadian cities to live in include Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, and Halifax. These cities all have unique shopping experiences, with Ottawa having the Byward Market, Toronto having Chinatown and Kensington Market, Vancouver having Granville Island and Gastown, Calgary having the Beltline and Inglewood, Montreal having the Latin Quarter and Plateau Mont-Royal, and Halifax having the Seaport Farmers’ Market. All of these cities have a distinct character which makes them desirable places to live. In terms of US cities with no natural disasters, some notable examples include Austin, Texas; Boulder, Colorado; Fort Collins, Colorado; Denver, Colorado; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Portland, Oregon. These cities are all located in states that are relatively free from tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. As a result, they are considered to be some of the safest places to live in the US. Finally, many US cities have low humidity levels due to their location.
No city in the U.S. has made it into the top 10 Most Liveable Cities list — but it’s managed to avoid the list of worst places, too. However, the U.S. did manage to score in the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)’s Global Liveability Index Top 30, with Atlanta in 26th. Neighboring Canada saw three cities make the list: Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto. Traditionally, Austria and Switzerland have placed highly on the list, which is ranked on culture, health care, education, infrastructure and entertainment.
Which one is better to live in – Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
Do you feel like a big city slicker or a small town girl? Edmonton or Calgary – which one is better to live in? Both cities have their pros and cons, but when it comes down to it, we think Calgary takes the cake. Read on to find out why!
Calgary and Edmonton are the 2 biggest cities in Alberta, Canada. The question is which one is better to live in, Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
It is difficult to say which city is better to live in, as it ultimately depends on an individual’s personal preferences and priorities. Both Calgary and Edmonton have their own unique features and attractions, and which city is better for you will depend on what you are looking for in a place to live.
Here are some factors to consider when deciding between Calgary and Edmonton:
Location: Calgary is located in southern Alberta, near the Rocky Mountains, while Edmonton is located in central Alberta. This can be a factor to consider if you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing, or if you prefer a more urban environment.
Cost of living: Both Calgary and Edmonton have a relatively low cost of living compared to other major cities in Canada. However, Calgary tends to be more expensive than Edmonton, particularly in terms of housing costs.
Employment: Both cities have strong economies and a diverse range of industries, including oil and gas, healthcare, and technology. Unemployment rates in both cities are generally low.
Climate: Calgary and Edmonton both have cold winters and warm summers, with Calgary generally experiencing cooler temperatures and more snowfall.
Ultimately, the decision of which city is better to live in will depend on your personal circumstances and what you are looking for in a place to call home. It may be helpful to research and compare the two cities in more detail to determine which one is a better fit for you.

What are the pros and cons of Calgary vs Edmonton.
As someone who has lived in both cities for more than 3 years and is still living in Calgary:
Weather: you have more sunshine and less harsh winter in Calgary with occasional positive temperature in the middle of the winter because of the Chinook winds: Calgary wins
Cost of life: Edmonton rent, home ownership, food, clothing is slightly cheaper than same items in Calgary: Edmonton wins
Job Opportunities: more blue collar jobs in Edmonton, more white collar jobs in Calgary: tie
Education: Edmonton has one of the top university in Canada called University of Alberta. University of Calgary has a first class business school called Hayskane school of business. Edmonton wins.
City’s architecture: Calgary seems newer, nicely architected and just more beautiful to me by far: Calgary wins
People: just the same to me, no difference: tie
Size and population: Calgary (1.3 million people, 825 km2) is larger and have more people than Edmonton (1 million people, 684 km2): I won’t call this a win
Mountains and lakes :Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Jasper National Park, Waterton Lakes National Park, are all closer to Calgary than Edmonton. Calgary is 1 hour from Banff, and day trips to the mountains are very common. Edmonton is 4 hours from Jasper, and trips to the mountains are more of a long weekend activity: Calgary Wins
Summer festivities: Both cities have great and similar festivals, but Calgary hosts the greatest western festival on earth in July called the Stampede. Sylvan Lake is halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. Calgary wins.
Sunshine: Calgary has way more sunshine that Edmonton. In fact, Calgary is amongst the top city with sunshine exposure in the entire country. Sunshine is happiness. Calgary wins.
Politics: Both cities are economically conservative. Edmonton is a little bit more socially liberal than Calgary. Who cares? Tie.
Sports: Flames(NHL)and Stampeders(CFL)in Calgary, Oiler(NHL) and Eskimos(CFL) in Edmonton. Several amateur leagues, indoor and outdoor facilities for soccer, hockey, basketball, football and baseball in both cities; ShowUpAndPlay in Calgary, ShowUpAndPlay in Edmonton : Tie
Cleanliness: Calgary is one of the cleanness cities in the world. I am in awe myself whenever I walk downtown and in my neighbourhood of Walden. Calgary wins by far.
Public Transit: Calgary C-Train has 3 lines and covers all 4 quadrants of the city(NW, SW,SE,NE) with multiple park and rides location at various C-Train stations. There are buses in almost every neighborhoods in Calgary connecting you to the nearest C-Train station. Edmonton Transit Services (ETS) provides service on buses and light-rail transit within the City of Edmonton limits, in addition to Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, Beaumont, and the Edmonton Garrison at Namao. It also provides connections to suburban transit services. Calgary Wins.
With all that in mind, I’ll choose Calgary any day.

Please avoid this nightmare building, spare yourself the time looking for anything here. Long story short, built by Carrington (you know the ones named in the Castledowns Pointe drama), management changed to Yorkton Management (scammers) in early 2023. Ever since they came into the building, it has turned into a dumpster fire. I remember when we all got the notice of management switching over, tenants were not happy. I'm pretty sure 3 tenants I knew left immediately and they made the right choice. So much is wrong with that building. Fire alarm goes off every other week, building doesn't feel safe at all (shots fired in underground parking, break-ins to the parking), and management doesn't give a F#CK about the tenants. ANY time there are maintenance requests, they are ignored or postponed to the latest date possible. And they have forgotten how to screen tenants apparently too??? So many bad tenants coming in, making the place dirty and disgusting. F#ck that place, and f#ck Yorkton group too. Feel free to share your experiences with other buildings too. submitted by /u/sick-mop [link] [comments]
hi, about a year and a half ago, i spotted a hard but small lump on my left tibia which i discovered for the first time after skating and having the weirdest bone pain. i went to the doctor soon after and they did an x ray and said its a calcified bone as a result of trauma and it should go away by itself, even tho i do not remember hurting myself on that leg for it to be labelled as a trauma. but i accepted it and didn’t worry about it. but the pain didn’t go away and it had been like two or three months till i decided to go to another doctor for a second opinion and she wrote an x ray for me and included my knee as well. the results then showed that it was an osteochondroma (a benign tumour) on my left bone and that i needed surgery to remove it and she referred me to an orthopaedic surgeon. this was about a year and three months ago. there is also a 1% chance it can turn malignant. the pain keeps getting worse but there isn’t a significant growth happening so i am not sure if i should be worried or not. i do limp at times when the pain gets that bad. the point of this post is, is this normal to be waiting this long for a surgery? has the healthcare system always been like this? why should we be in pain waiting this long for a surgery? i understand that some patients take priority by being on the top of the list but i really wish some of the funds being sent for useless needs by the canadian government were spent on our messed up healthcare systems like this. submitted by /u/darkskydreams [link] [comments]

Hello friends. What’s the real estate market like in Edmonton right now? I talked to a realtor about selling my house and was told houses are selling quickly and for close to list or even above list price. I’m not sure if this is just what realtors tell you to get them to list with them. I’m wondering if anyone could share their personal experiences? Thanks! submitted by /u/dsh7878 [link] [comments]

Moved here last week. I know Canadians are known for being nice but my experience so far in Calgary is unparalleled with the other major Canadian cities I've lived in (Vancouver 8 years, Toronto 15 years, Montreal 5 years). Actually starting to feel kind of like an asshole because I'm not as talkative and pleasant as the people I've met here so far. Everyone seems to be up for chatting or helping out, people smiling on the streets, etc. You guys are very genuine and awesome. Also nobody seems to jaywalk ...? Like no cars in sight, people just wait for their light to turn green before crossing the road. Not used to seeing this ... submitted by /u/OppositeOne6275 [link] [comments]
Good morning Edmonton! So I’ve had a very severe sore throat for a little over a month now. The type where you are hungry but would rather die than try and swallow anything. I called my family doctor 3 weeks ago and she prescribed me amoxicillin thinking it may be a strep throat infection. Unfortunately after 7 days of taking it, the problem came back and has been only getting remarkably worse. This morning, my parents (I am 17 and female) told me I should try and see a walk in doctor to re-evaluate the issue. I was dropped off at All-Well Primary Care Clinic in Mill woods at their opening time and was the first patient seen. My family has been seeing Dr Dan Ryan at this clinic for years for walk in visits but he wasn’t in today. The doctor came into the room, did not close the door or say hello, the following exchange is paraphrased but pretty damn close: “What’s wrong?” “Hi! I’ve had a severe sore throat infection for about 4 weeks now-“ “How long?” “4 weeks sir, I was prescribed amoxicillin but the issue came back and-“ “Open your mouth” (he looked in my mouth, took my temperature without cleaning the thermometer, and listened to me breathe) “You have a cold, antibiotics won’t help, take Tylenol, bye” The whole visit wasn’t even 2 minutes long. I’m a bit sensitive maybe but the whole experience was very rattling, wouldn’t recommend. I don’t know if my symptoms give me a right to be concerned like I am, but 4 weeks seems really weird for a cold, not to mention I’m not getting any better and instead worse. Anyways, this it just a warning for other young women, or really anyone, they do not take you seriously over there. Stay safe out there! Edit: Yes we changed my toothbrush once I started the amoxicillin. I've now been tested for both strep and mono. I had a feeling this clinic was known for being unprofessional. submitted by /u/RedzToday [link] [comments]
I know its spring and the snow melt has revealed the hidden trash accumulating over the winter, but wow…this stretch of highway is embarrassing. It’s probably concentrated because of the SG dump being so close to 16A. Is it usually this bad though in spring though?? When is the clean up scheduled? I’d totally volunteer for it. submitted by /u/Normon-The-Ex [link] [comments]

Hey, I live in an older inner city home and have powerlines connecting from the house to the power/telephone poles in the back lane. At some point last night, one of the cables that was initially approx. 15-20ft off the ground dropped significantly - to about head height. After closer inspection, it seems like it is a "double cable" (for lack of a better term) and one of the cables has detached from the house, I think it's purpose is to maintain tension for the actual power/telephone line, but I'm not sure. I have attached a picture. In red, the thing that popped off, and in green I assume that's where it popped out of. https://imgur.com/a/HfI8ZrG Can anyone suggest how to figure out who to call? If it's a power line I assume it would be Enmax, if it's a telephone line I assume Telus/Shaw-Rogers. Or is it something I can just try to remediate myself?
