Which one is better to live in – Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
Do you feel like a big city slicker or a small town girl? Edmonton or Calgary – which one is better to live in? Both cities have their pros and cons, but when it comes down to it, we think Calgary takes the cake. Read on to find out why!
Calgary and Edmonton are the 2 biggest cities in Alberta, Canada. The question is which one is better to live in, Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
It is difficult to say which city is better to live in, as it ultimately depends on an individual’s personal preferences and priorities. Both Calgary and Edmonton have their own unique features and attractions, and which city is better for you will depend on what you are looking for in a place to live.
Here are some factors to consider when deciding between Calgary and Edmonton:
Location: Calgary is located in southern Alberta, near the Rocky Mountains, while Edmonton is located in central Alberta. This can be a factor to consider if you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing, or if you prefer a more urban environment.
Cost of living: Both Calgary and Edmonton have a relatively low cost of living compared to other major cities in Canada. However, Calgary tends to be more expensive than Edmonton, particularly in terms of housing costs.
Employment: Both cities have strong economies and a diverse range of industries, including oil and gas, healthcare, and technology. Unemployment rates in both cities are generally low.
Climate: Calgary and Edmonton both have cold winters and warm summers, with Calgary generally experiencing cooler temperatures and more snowfall.
Ultimately, the decision of which city is better to live in will depend on your personal circumstances and what you are looking for in a place to call home. It may be helpful to research and compare the two cities in more detail to determine which one is a better fit for you.

What are the pros and cons of Calgary vs Edmonton.
As someone who has lived in both cities for more than 3 years and is still living in Calgary:
Weather: you have more sunshine and less harsh winter in Calgary with occasional positive temperature in the middle of the winter because of the Chinook winds: Calgary wins
Cost of life: Edmonton rent, home ownership, food, clothing is slightly cheaper than same items in Calgary: Edmonton wins
Job Opportunities: more blue collar jobs in Edmonton, more white collar jobs in Calgary: tie
Education: Edmonton has one of the top university in Canada called University of Alberta. University of Calgary has a first class business school called Hayskane school of business. Edmonton wins.
City’s architecture: Calgary seems newer, nicely architected and just more beautiful to me by far: Calgary wins
People: just the same to me, no difference: tie
Size and population: Calgary (1.3 million people, 825 km2) is larger and have more people than Edmonton (1 million people, 684 km2): I won’t call this a win
Mountains and lakes :Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Jasper National Park, Waterton Lakes National Park, are all closer to Calgary than Edmonton. Calgary is 1 hour from Banff, and day trips to the mountains are very common. Edmonton is 4 hours from Jasper, and trips to the mountains are more of a long weekend activity: Calgary Wins
Summer festivities: Both cities have great and similar festivals, but Calgary hosts the greatest western festival on earth in July called the Stampede. Sylvan Lake is halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. Calgary wins.
Sunshine: Calgary has way more sunshine that Edmonton. In fact, Calgary is amongst the top city with sunshine exposure in the entire country. Sunshine is happiness. Calgary wins.
Politics: Both cities are economically conservative. Edmonton is a little bit more socially liberal than Calgary. Who cares? Tie.
Sports: Flames(NHL)and Stampeders(CFL)in Calgary, Oiler(NHL) and Eskimos(CFL) in Edmonton. Several amateur leagues, indoor and outdoor facilities for soccer, hockey, basketball, football and baseball in both cities; ShowUpAndPlay in Calgary, ShowUpAndPlay in Edmonton : Tie
Cleanliness: Calgary is one of the cleanness cities in the world. I am in awe myself whenever I walk downtown and in my neighbourhood of Walden. Calgary wins by far.
Public Transit: Calgary C-Train has 3 lines and covers all 4 quadrants of the city(NW, SW,SE,NE) with multiple park and rides location at various C-Train stations. There are buses in almost every neighborhoods in Calgary connecting you to the nearest C-Train station. Edmonton Transit Services (ETS) provides service on buses and light-rail transit within the City of Edmonton limits, in addition to Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, Beaumont, and the Edmonton Garrison at Namao. It also provides connections to suburban transit services. Calgary Wins.
With all that in mind, I’ll choose Calgary any day.
Anyone know a bar that will be showing the fight tomorrow night? The few I’ve called already aren’t planning to show it and I started with some pretty main venues … submitted by /u/Economy_Ear_4751 [link] [comments]
Just in case this is tl:dr Calgary Bike Swap is on May 4th at Max Bell Arena. But, if you have questions then please read below. First, we'd like to thank Calgary Reddit Moderators for allowing us to promote our non-profit bike swap event once. Full disclosure that we have a $2.00 admission that will be used to repair the donated bikes. More below. Why we do what we do - we’re Chris and Laura and we didn’t feel safe buying or selling bikes online so we founded, fund, and operate Alberta Bike Swap a non-profit that provides a safe place to buy, sell, and donate bicycles. If you have a bike to sell we’ll tech check that bike and run the serial number through our software to verify bike ownership because no one wants to buy a stolen bike. We’re proud to be the only Bike Index Ambassadors in Calgary. Want to buy a bike? Stand in line, suggest no later than 10:00. IF you can pay the $2.00 admission that $2.00 will go to repair the hundreds of donated bikes. Have a stolen bike police report? All the bikes will be entered into the swap by 1400, please come to our event at 1400 so that you can see for yourself that your bike isn't in our event. Calgary Police attend and support us and our event. The Calgary Police Mountain Bike Team are attending our event! The police and RCMP have seized bikes from online sales and pawnshops based on what we do, and insurance companies use our paperwork as proof. We added children's bikes to our events because it helps families. We work with over 30 groups to rebuild donated bikes too and have over 80 partners that help us help others. We work with every group in Alberta, except one: https://albertabikeswap.ca/strategic-alliances/. We're doing a bike drive for Wood's Homes to help them. If you have an unused or have outgrown a bike we have a partner that would recondition that bike for re-use. Please consider contacting us if you are putting on a community clean-up, we’ll make sure those bikes are re-cycled to someone that can use them (pun intended). Municipalities spend millions on cycling infrastructure, but nothing on cycling education. We fund legitimate cycling education through CAN-BIKE, which is the only recognized cycling education program in Canada and there are only four (4) CAN-BIKE cycling instructors in Alberta. Want to learn how to safely and proficiently? https://albertabikeswap.ca/education/ We have Facebook pages for Alberta Bike Swap and Calgary Bike Swap and we’re also on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. We also have a lot of information on our website: https://albertabikeswap.ca/ We can’t put our events on without wonderful people like you and we thank you for reading this, hopefully putting up our poster, and maybe following us on social media on LinkedIn, Twitter, FB, or IG. The swaps are run from our kitchen table by just the two of us, we do the best we can to help as many people as we can and every bike counts. Again, thank you to the Reddit Moderators for allowing us to post our event. submitted by /u/AlbertaBikeSwapBIKES [link] [comments]
I've lived in the Beltline for a few years and a new Dollarama recently opened at 8th St SW & 16th Ave SW and the Urban Fare across the street is converting to Save on Foods next week. I'm frugal so when I moved to Calgary (the Beltline specifically) a few years ago, I was disappointed at the lack of discount options in the neighbourhood. Yes there's Dollaramas along Stephen Ave & in Mission but the only discount grocery store is Real Canadian Superstore which for me is a 30 minute walk. This is definitely a neighbourhood that's a bit more affluent and easy to spend money. Most people seem to impacted by the cost of living. In the Beltline, there's a ton of rentals. A few years ago when I moved here, another Dollarama and a discount grocery store would have seemed out of place but I've found myself saying for the past 6 months that the Beltline needs a discount grocery store. I wondered why Safeway wouldn't convert either their Safeway or Mission location to a FreshCo. I want to get peoples thoughts on this. Is Save on Foods & Dollarama correctly reading their room? Do they see this as an opportunity to make money as people look to save money? submitted by /u/Poptart9900 [link] [comments]

Hello! We are starting a non profit art class space - thinking of doing drop in style where you can come in and do your own thing or follow an instructor at a set time - what would you prefer and are weeknight evenings better than weekends? This would be downtown and the idea is just to make a space accessible for folks to create without signing up for monthly classes. submitted by /u/teamvolly [link] [comments]

What's your go to place to grab a bottle at a reasonable price? I've pretty much exhausted the Scotch that Superstore carries. BSW on Mcknight has a pretty good selection with sales fairly often. Familiar with KWM but its a little on the pricey side. Are there any hidden gems, maybe a community liquor store that's a little off the beaten path? As we approach the April 22nd rezoning meeting, I was thinking about this added density. If rezoning goes through a full size lot (50x120) will allow for 3 rowhouses to be built if the lot is midblock (or 4 rowhouses on a corner lot). This is increased density for sure, but has anyone actually seen any midblock 3 rowhouse designs? All I have seen on a 50x120 midblock lot are just duplexes with a basement suite (or two new infills). I'm genuinely curious if this large increase in density will even materialize. In a lot of neighborhoods (specially inner city) there are already tons of duplexes and infills. TLDR: Has anyone actually seen a rowhouses design on a 50x120 midblock lot? Or is the 50ft frontage midblock lots just going to be limited to duplexes and infills simply because of design/size regardless of zoning? submitted by /u/6pimpjuice9 [link] [comments]
Hey everyone. I have a bit of a strange request. My grandfather passed away on Friday April 5, 2024. He was a life long trucker for over 45 years. He lived in Calgary. As he retired 15+ years ago, we no longer have any contacts of truckers he worked with/alongside. With that being said, I’m looking for a last call for my grandfather to be played when I finish the eulogy at his funeral next Saturday April 27. If there are any truckers on here that would be willing to do a last call for my grandfather, it would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance everyone! submitted by /u/Orbitchualawalabang [link] [comments]

We purchased a coupon book a while back but aren’t from Calgary, so it had been sitting in the centre console of the truck for a hot minute. Yesterday we were in the city and decided to give the book a little read, and found coupons for a place called “around the bend”. Off we went, and boy are we glad we did! Starting strong: The prices were great. You can imagine our surprise even more when a meat filled pretzel came out, bursting with flavour, home made sauces, and toasted to perfection. I had the California twist, and my partner had the Cuban (I believe) twist. Both were absolutely delicious. We topped it off with a three cheese pretzel, and left feeling happy and stuffed. https://tnc.news/2024/04/18/gondek-never-own-a-home-freedom/ Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek says the prospect of never owning a home and becoming a forever renter is a liberating experience. Gondek, who owns two properties in Calgary, made the comments during a discussion with the development company RNDSQR. “We’re starting to see a segment of the population reject this idea of owning a home, and they’re moving towards rental because it gives them more freedom,” said Gondek. “They can travel to different places, they can try out different communities, their job may take them from place to place and so people have become much more liberated around what housing looks like, and what the tenure of housing looks like.” Gondek then went on to say that the idea of being able to own a home was like being “stuck in the 40s, 50s and 60s.” “As municipalities, we haven’t kept pace with that change. We’re still stuck in the 40s, 50s and 60s,” said Gondek. According to Gondek’s disclosure statement, the Calgary mayor owns two properties in Calgary – one in Panorama Hills and another downtown in East Village. Gondek’s comments were condemned by Calgary Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner. “”If this isn’t a deepfake, this is a perpetuation of a dangerous myth that most renters are renters by choice and have disposable income to travel and the capacity to uproot their residence for work,” Rempel Garner posted on X. Gondek recently faced a recall campaign. Following the Recall Gondek initiative, campaign leader Landon Johnston is slated to hold discussions with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith regarding possible reforms to the province’s recall laws. Johnston handed in a total of 72,271 collected signatures. The campaign required Johnston to gather signatures from 40% of Calgary’s eligible voters, a total of 514,284, within 60 days. In the previous city election, Mayor Gondek secured 176,455 votes out of the 393,090 ballots cast. Although the signature count fell short of the target, Johnston viewed the campaign as a success. He embarked on the effort single-handedly and initially did not anticipate garnering any signatures at all. submitted by /u/TacoShotz [link] [comments]
