  • Is it disrespectful to put a fantastical aspect to a practice of African tribes?
by /u/Quirky_Emphasis_2026 (Africa) on March 7, 2026 at 6:28 pm

(Context: I'm writing a fantasy story, and I want to turn it into a comic. I'm explaining some things in this text because it's a post originally for the worldbuilding subreddit.) Sorry if I said anything wrong. I was reading about scarification among the Yoruba people, since there are articles about it in my language. I am Brazilian, and our culture has a lot of Yoruba influence, since Brazil has the largest number of followers of African based religions outside of the African continent. Candomblé and Umbanda are examples of afro-brazilian religions. Scarification is a process of cutting the skin into patterns that signify different things depending on the tribe. It is a practice carried out by Yoruba peoples of Nigeria, Benin, Ethiopia and other countries that are part of West Africa, and I read that even Australian Aborigines are (or were) adherents of this practice. Based on "Scarification: Art, Body and Yoruba Traditions", article from the philosophy magazine "Problemata", which focuses mainly on facial scarification, scarification is a form of using the body as canvas for artistic expression. The first piece of art made in all time was the representation of a human being in clay made by Obatalá, the orixá(divinity) of creativity, and the myth says that he asked for Ogun, orixá of war and metal, to add details to the work using his tools. The stripes marked on the face are made for connecting with Orí, the orixá of destiny, because "orí" means "head" in Yoruba. Ok but, if I create fictional characters inspired by these orixás, would that be wrong? And if I created a magical utensil that Ogun used that day, which is necessary for this ritual but it got lost and now the characters have to find it.. Would that be appropriate? Now, regarding other forms of scarification that I haven't explored in detail, cause the article I read discusses facial scarification and it's not done to cause keloid scars, there are body scarifications that involve applying ashes, often from burnt wood, to create rasied keloids. But what if, in my fictional world, the bodies of sacred magical creatures are charred by a fictional divinity inspired by Xangô, the orixá of fire and thunder, whose fire is often referenced as purifying? Or... The parents of the person who's going to be cut, are charred when they die, and then the daughter/son carry the lineage forward with their scars healed by those ashes? Or... The burnt wood comes from a magical tree... I have many ideas, but I don't know if I should pursue any of them. Is ir disrespectul, or a good idea? If someone here knows about african culture and myths, help me! Obrigado ❤️ submitted by /u/Quirky_Emphasis_2026 [link] [comments]

  • Just finished A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry and I don't know what to do with myself
by /u/zeus0225 (So many books, so little time) on March 7, 2026 at 6:11 pm

I think A Fine Balance is the best book I've ever read. I'm a little worried about saying that because I don't want to hype it up for others who haven't read it yet. Take my judgment with a grain of salt because I don't have too many books under my belt. I'm not here to review though. It's been a few days since I completed the book and I have both an urge to find another book to read and to not read for a while because I don't want to forget the characters. I feel like I need to just sit with it all for a while and that if I rush into a new book, it wouldn't do either books justice. I've never felt this way about a story or a fictional character before. Has anyone felt this way about a book before? What would you do? I had borrowed the book from my library and I'm considering buying my own copy to reread. submitted by /u/zeus0225 [link] [comments]

Im reading the new one (Breath of the Gods), and I cannot get past 10 pages without passing right out. Lol. by /u/blxcklst (So many books, so little time) on March 7, 2026 at 5:36 pm

For me it’s ACOTAR series. I read the first 4 books on my kindle, then took a break and listened to Demon Copperhead audio in the meantime. DC shook my world, and when I went back to last book of ACOTAR, I just couldn’t go on. I am absolutely not beneath booktok or romantasy, but it just seemed so ridiculous lol. • I'm 100 years late to the party but I'm reading Bird Box and all you guys who said it was bad are trippin
by /u/bextaxi (So many books, so little time) on March 7, 2026 at 3:25 pm

I've been in a reading slump for the last couple months and this one has pulled me out of it with a vengeance. I really appreciate the extra story details that I missed from the movie. And the scenes of them having to go outside to get water or feed the birds is chilling. There are a couple minor plot holes, like when Tom and Jules go find the dogs and they spend hours doing a sweep of the house they break into, but somehow miss the boy on the bed? Or the parents? But it hasn't been enough to fully pull me out of the story. The concept of there being something outside and if you could just take a peek, you could confirm if there's a person or animal or.... something else.... but you can't look because you could die, has terrified me in a way I didn't expect. And I think the book is much more immersive experience for this story than the movie because as an audience, we can see if there's something there or not, but in the book we only know what they know. I'm really enjoying the read. I saw a lot of people criticizing the writing style, but I feel like it sets the tone well. submitted by /u/bextaxi [link] [comments]

  • Happy early International Women's Day!
by /u/Bakyumu (Africa) on March 7, 2026 at 1:21 pm

Tomorrow is International Women's Day, and I wanted to take a moment to appreciate the incredible, diverse beauty of African women. As we celebrate the women in our lives, I think it is a great time to reflect on our own unique beauty standards and why we should be proud of them, starting with the front tooth gap. In many of our cultures across the continent, a gap between the front teeth is considered a mark of striking beauty, confidence, and sometimes even luck or wisdom. Scientifically, this gap is known as a midline diastema. It is a completely natural, harmless genetic trait that typically occurs either because of a mismatch between the size of the jawbone and the size of the teeth, or due to a prominent labial frenulum, the small piece of tissue connecting the upper lip to the gums. While some other parts of the world might treat a diastema as a dental flaw to be fixed with braces, for us, it is a signature feature to be celebrated. We need to remember that African beauty standards do not have to pale in comparison to anyone else's, nor do they need outside validation. We have our own deep-rooted metrics of elegance, grace, and style that have existed for centuries. Whether it is our hair, our skin tones, or our beautiful smiles, we do not need to alter ourselves to fit a foreign mold. Our people, and our women especially, are beautiful in every way. Let us wear our features with absolute pride. Happy International Women's Day to all the amazing women on this sub! submitted by /u/Bakyumu [link] [comments]

  • Read a book as quickly as possible or savor one chapter a day?
by /u/CuriousGuy21200 (So many books, so little time) on March 7, 2026 at 12:03 pm

Yesterday I watched a video of an older BookTuber talking about his reading experience, where he decided to dedicate more time to savoring a book instead of reading 40 books a year. Regarding that topic, since last year, I've been reading Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, one chapter a day, because it's very long (although there were days or weeks when I didn't read anything because I had other obligations). So, I want to ask you, members of this community, how you usually read and enjoy your books: do you finish them as quickly as possible, several chapters a day, or one chapter a day? And what about those books or comics/webtoons that are written to be read nonstop, consuming as many chapters as possible in a row? Thank you in advance for your opinion. submitted by /u/CuriousGuy21200 [link] [comments]

  • Recommendations for a book holder
by /u/SugarMicro (So many books, so little time) on March 7, 2026 at 11:26 am

(I hope it's not against rule 3, since it's not asking for book recommendations, but for an accessory) I'm looking to hear your recommendations for book stands, or anything similar, that could possibly make reading easier. I like to read while sitting (lying in bed never felt comfortable for me), but laying the book flat on the desk makes my upper back and neck uncomfortable. I always try to make the angle of the book about 30-45 degrees, but holding it for long periods of time is annoying, and improvising a book stand doesn't really feel good. The main thing I'm torn (haha) about book stands is that my pages could get torn when flipping, after looking at some popular products on websites. Did you have a similar experience, and could share what helped? Thanks. submitted by /u/SugarMicro [link] [comments]

  • What’s the book you DNF’d the fastest?
by /u/Mobius8321 (So many books, so little time) on March 7, 2026 at 10:57 am

… and why? I rarely ever DNF books. I can actually count on one hand the amount of books I’ve DNF’d in my lifetime. I just DNF’d The Regional Office is Under Attack! At page 7 (almost page 20 or so if you count the Roman numerals numbered prologue). It was 100% a dude trying to write a “relatable teenaged girl” while trying to be edgy af by dropping f-bombs and g-ds every sentence… every sentence that was written as if he was trying to capture the style of the classics like Dickens but ended up word vomiting instead. I feel sucker punched. It had such a great premise too! Sigh. If you enjoyed the book, I’m not trying to yuck your yum. It just wasn’t for me. So what’s your version of this scenario? submitted by /u/Mobius8321 [link] [comments]
