Hey y'all I read a book in high school a while back that I really enjoyed and I've been wanting to reread it again. The bad news is is that I don't remember the author or the title of the book I just remembered the plot and the ending. It was a thriller and for my understanding I remember the author being female and the book having a male protagonist. The plot that I remember: basically a kid was kidnapped many years ago and then we meet our protagonist who seems to be the missing child from years ago but the more you learn his memory start to mix and his siblings don't believe that he is the person and then by the end of the book they realize and he realizes he's not the missing child and they connect the DNA from a whole other body that was a John Doe and then basically he leaves and it's an open ending. I don't remember if that's the full true plot I'm just going off what I remember. So the county I live in schools had a PTA meeting to attempt to ban this book. The final conclusion was that kids 18+ can borrow it. Since there was a huge stink of it, I borrowed a copy of the audio book via the hoopla app. Please be aware the following paragraph to avoid spoilers if you want to read this. However, I will break down my thoughts and observations after the next paragraph. (Spoiler paragraph)The book is about a girl named Claudia who returns home from summer vacation to discover her best friend, Monday, is missing. The majority of this book is her attempting to find her friend while everyone around her acts as if all else is normal, including the school system, police, and child protection agencies. Unfortunately we learn that Monday was murdered by her mother and had been dead for 8 months before her body was found inside her apartment. We also see the intense damage this does on Claudia through severe disassociate PTSD. So the big fuss was over some sexual content in this book. And yes, there is some adult language and there is a scene that describes sex, about ten seconds of audio. Every sexual mention in this book is in a negative light, such as women feeling trapped and finding worth in their bodies by reluctantly giving in to men with bad intentions, guilt of peer pressure, and the regret after. MUCH different than the smut books your aunt was always reading on her wine nights. However, the PTA counsel was calling this “pornography” and even compared it to handing children a playboy. It wasn’t until later in the comment section that I saw someone mention the “horrible CRT”. It all rang for me... this is a book written by a black woman and in the book it touches on the realities of gentrification, the struggles people of color face, and the fact that so many missing black girls go missing and nothing is done about it. People either let the local tea party here tell them what to think, or they used their own racism to compare a book to porn. I absolutely loved this book. A modern gothic fairytale tinged with humor and bittersweet memories. A strained mother daughter relationship. The horror tinted novel is about a lonely dress shop clerk who becomes entangled with a cultlike spa and her own obsession with physical beauty in the wake of her mother's death. This beauty horror story has it all- cursed mirrors, beauty tutorials, masked balls..a tom cruise cameo? Like the guardian says “overall, it’s like being drowned in thick poison – or Poison, by Dior – with red lips, dark silk and crushed petals on every page.” If you have read this i’d love to know your thoughts as well! What a fantastic read. Very sad. Here is a man so caught up in his reasoning that he cannot give himself to sentimentality until it overwhelms him and leaves him full of self-loathing. His intelligence and self-awareness cripples him. As an alcoholic in recovery, I resonated very much with this person who has no spiritual guide to give him some brief reprieve from his mind. He can only occasionally sense the “sublime and beautiful.” It ends with him breaking down in front of someone who thought him a savior, and she sees him with pity because she knows he is in a far worse position then she, who was capable of freeing herself from her suffering because she allowed herself to feel the torture she had previously undergone. She allowed the protagonist to reach her heart. He loathes her after she catches a glimpse of his. It is a sort of torture he cannot allow himself to feel without shame—he can only analyze it and express it by loathing others, poking them, trying to get them to react in some human form. He is stuck in the self, in samsara, no matter who wittily he examines it. He can only rant and rave in his inertia. I cannot claim to understand the historical context of this novella, but psychologically it gripped me. I was already expecting to like it because two years ago I read The Brothers Karamazov and loved that one very much, and I was not disappointed. The beginning was heavy, and took much patience and effort to digest, but after having devoted a year-and-a-half of my life to reading Gravity’s Rainbow no book is truly “difficult” anymore. If I were to rank the Russians I have read, I would say: Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Gogol, then Nabokov. SPOILERS. I'm kind of conflicted. I loved his title No Exit, but this one? I kind of hate it. After the first passage for the Author character, I slapped the book down and went to my husband to tell him how irritated I was. I described the character as "a reddit Moderator meme personified who worships Andrew Tate." He laughed and groaned after having me read it out to him. I would like to know some other opinions on this title. I want to like this book, but that one particular character ruined it for me. The way my husband described his feelings towards the character (after also reading it) is "its like Taylor Adams had one bad encounter with a basement dweller who one starred him and wrote an entire fan fiction purely to spite the guy." I just finished R.F. Kuang’s Babel, or the Necessity of Violence. I found the book engaging and I was impressed with her research (especially the etymology rabbit holes), but I’m very mixed on the ending. The conclusion she wants to land on is that violence is necessary (i.e., the title) for any seismic sociopolitical change to succeed, but it’s not clear to me what Kuang means by violence. Robin and Victoire storm Babel at gunpoint and shoot Professor Playfair, but afterwards they show no violence at all, except by omission, until Robin kills himself. Robin craves a blood-filled vengeance but what he actually does is enact a strike, hardly a violent act. My question, then, is what would be the practical application of these ideas in 19th century England, or today for that matter. Should the workers go on strike and lobby the power-brokers for social reform, or should they storm the House of Commons with firearms and burn it all down? The fact of the matter is that Babel didn’t exist in the 1800s, nor does there exist today any simple avatar of capitalism and Empire that can be overthrown by mere force. Kuang paints a kiddie version of revolution, setting up fake conflicts where the solutions are easy, with very little insight on what would actually be required to bring a global power to its knees. There is also glaringly scant discussion on what’s supposed to happen after the Empire falls. She takes pains to argue that the British are not cleverer than other nations, they’re merely greedier, more brutal, seeming to imply that no power replacing them could possibly be worse – it’s by no means obvious, however, that the resulting power vacuum would lead to an improvement in human rights. The Hermes Society, or more specifically Robin and Griffin, have no substantive ideas for how to enact lasting reform, stave off anarchy, and alleviate suffering, but rather than their approach being portrayed as shortsighted it is actually enshrined as the right path all along. Where the novel really starts to lose me is when Robin and Victoire storm Babel under the specific pretense of stopping the opium war, but it gradually morphs into the defeat of the Empire altogether. For Robin, this makes sense, given the bottomless, self-destructive rage we’ve seen him develop, but why do the other occupants of the tower go along? It strains my suspension of disbelief that someone like Professor Craft, even with her speech about the “mass of black rot” inside her, would escalate from humanitarian concerns over an exploitative war to wanting to torch the Library of Alexandria like a shame-filled martyr. This is one of many ways in which Kuang’s characters begin to feel like pawns in a moral lecture, rather than the sincere figments of a careful storyteller. Finally, I think the reason I was mixed on the ending is the same reason I couldn’t finish Kuang’s Poppy War trilogy – I find her writing to be relentlessly grim. There are any number of ways that Babel could have ended – perhaps the Hermes Society, through a mix of social pressure, pamphleteering, and pointed displays of strength, are able to convince Parliament to vote against the opium war, and Robin is inspired to know that violence isn’t always the only option, that gains can be won by appealing to people’s hearts on the path to justice. This would help to heal his hatred and his desire to die, would show us that he’s better than his brother, and would suggest an inspiring future where Hermes continues its work in the shadows, compiling research and improving the world. Such an ending may have come across as unrealistic, but so is how the book actually ends, with a collapsing magic tower that symbolically represents the British Empire and literally represents its downfall. Picked this one up seeing it listed as sci-fi horror with an interesting premise, woman goes into caving expedition and things get rather sinister. For the first act I really enjoyed it. I loved the caving, the mangled corpses, Em being as dubious as it gets and the standoff between the two characters at first. But I have to say, as soon as Em's motivation became clear and Gyre started excusing all her behaviour, it went steadily downhill for me though I kept reading hoping for a twist to breathe life back into it, for the great mystery of the cave itself to result into a centre point of it, like an entity a la The Crawler, but alas. I was also hoping for an emotionally gratifying conclusion where Gyre would outgrow the trauma bonding with Em and see through the toxic bond they formed. Wasn't a fan of where their story ended. Major spoilers below. I promise you, if you have not read this book you do NOT want it spoiled. I just finished Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. I think this might be the most devastating book I have ever had the pleasure to read. If you have read this, please join in the discussion! I had no idea what to expect going into this book. I randomly picked it up at the bookstore since I was a fan of Remains of the Day, his earlier novel. But in my opinion, this book is superior. It is the closest thing to a Black Mirror episode that I have ever found in my literary journey. First of all, this book just has a melancholy dreamy vibe, perhaps because the entire story is a collection of memories. From the very beginning you know that something is not quite right with Hailsham. There is an aura of mystery that hangs over everything. The decision to drop the hammer and inform the read what is going on here was done brilliantly, by dropping little bits of information at a time. I let out so many audible gasps, probably more so than any other book. I love a story that prompts my mind to contemplate the deepest questions of life, and this book delivers that in droves. It makes you seriously think about the moral implications of the progress we make scientifically. All these characters are living, breathing human beings with a rich inner life. The fact that they exist simply to be harvested for their organs is cruel and unjust. I have to admit wondering from time to time, why can't they run away? Why can't they get off the grid and avoid their fate? But the book doesn't address that possibility unless I missed it somewhere. I am trying to find something hopeful in this novel but really it is just depressing. The characters are all so accepting of their fate that it is creepy. In the best way. This will be bouncing around my mind for a long time, I can tell. If you have read this book, please share with me your thoughts. I would love to hear them. I love the Hunger Games but am confused why no one ever discusses her other series The Underland Chronicles. It is technically for children, but I have always found it just as compelling. It came out in 2003 and was completed shortly before the Hunger Games was released. Just as the title says. Everything that's been happening in W.A. is to their own & North Africa's detriment. I think the Sahel countries are beyond redemption. Mali: Here we have a country that is literally a jihadi playground with a brain dead military that thinks coup after coup will solve anything. First coup claimed that security deterioration was the reason for ejecting the civilians then the 2nd coup ejected their brain dead brethren & justified it with the same security stuff. Now they called in Wagner dogs not to help in their security situation but to settle political scores with mostly "separatists". I put separatists in quotations cause some of them pledge their allegiance to ISIS and Al Qaeda retards (this doesn't diminish their plight & concerns). This country has had since 2012 to build and all inclusive state where the moderate "separatists" felt included in the resource sharing but that didn't happen & to also adhere to the 2015 Algiers Peace Agreement. Now you have the "separatists" breaking agreements and launching attacks this coupled with ISIS mad men attacking the army too. Double trouble for Assimi Goita. Plus he's putting off elections. Man is drawing his legitimacy from the barrel or a gun. Good luck. Coup begets a Coup. Niger: Here we have a country I somewhat agree with Tchiani's concerns. He may have staged a coup to stop himself from being fired but he's really played the French occupation & exploitation card really well. This country got independence in 1960 and joined ECOWAS in 1975. Since 1975 there has literally been no economic advancement despite having only one country extract and use its Uranium. I'm from Swahili East Africa so idk much about the deals signed but what I don't understand is why ECOWAS has never voiced its concerns about these seemingly bad contracts. Burkina Faso: Here we have a Thomas Sankara wannabe & unlike Sankara he has jihadis crawling all over. Man controls only the capital. His own boys just tested him like yesterday. Again idk much about its economy but jihadis will exploit lack of government services and stability. Sudan: Not in W.A but it requires an honourable mention. This dick measuring contest is going to balkanize the country. You have terrorist dogs running a mock in the capital and an army that has set up a de facto new capital in port Sudan. Khartoum is a wasteland, I don't even know how you restart such a reconstruction effort. If things go worse than now (things now are worse) Darfur goes on its own, me thinks. Blue Nile states looks shaky as well. Good luck. Now the Sahel has always (to my knowledge) been a strip of Sufism but with the bombing of Libya in 2011 this release Salafis/Wahabis to the Sahara. These salafis were able to get a hold of Libya's arms cache (which were significant) together with french supplies or arms (for those who will doubt) and now spread them and their ideology all over the Sahara. I honestly don't know how these countries will ever recover. What this means is that North African countries are about to enjoy some of that jihadi gospel as well and a lot of migrants fleeing. Good luck (especially Algeria, cause Libya isn't functioning). I see Libya balkanizing as well, a dick warlord thinks he's loved. ECOWAS is a retarded organisation. They've failed to address the economic issues of places like Niger (how can you produce uranium that goes not to the market but to a predetermined customer and still languish in poverty). The elections of Bazoum was marred with irregularities of which ECOWAS did not address. Nigeria has a drug lord president that falsifies his academic qualifications. Today Senegal's main opposition leader is in jail , the french lapdog Macky Sall orders his supporters to be shot on the streets. Should there be a coup in Senegal is ECOWAS going to start calling for a restoration of constitutional order? . ECOWAS has failed in everything it is meant to do for West African states but now wants to put an ultimatum & sanctions which will only impoverish people and they'll be enticed by jihadis. At least jihadis give them stable jobs. Many juntas have called your bluff just dissolve, you are useless. tl;dr : Even God can't help Sahel countries. Jihadis will continue on the rise. Just finished this book today and.... very interesting concept.. It's written via email correspondence between two women, and one of their slow descents into a total mental breakdown. One paper it sounds fascinating but I just wasn't pulled in completely. It's very short so I couldn't really stretch out into it, if you know what I mean. Plus.. the huge problem with tackling madness and mental health in a book written in email...is that you don't get any glimpse of their peorsonal thoughts. You only can try to sus that out with the text in the email. Anyway the ending I think will stay with me for a bit, so mission accomplished there I suppose. I'm reading a JF book "Mothman's Curse." Until 1/4 through it, you think the culprit of the strange goings on is a ghost or a man, but since I know the title, I know the Mothman is a suspect before there's any mention of him. I don't find this a problem in this case, especially as a book for younger people. What are some book titles that give away too much? Of course there are books like They Both Die at the End or And Then There Were None, but that is a device used for intrigue. Are there any book titles that perhaps inadvertently spoil the contents?
