Wtf is up with the Roger and Kit storyline? I'm rereading the book and I can't stop thinking about it. They met when Roger was 19 and Kit was 6. And continue to interact throughout all of his childhood. One thing I appreciate in his work is there's never the pretense of "it was a different time" regarding young teens and adults the way people like to pretend history was. This feels particularly egregious and it's never discussed?? Like nobody seems to have a problem with this?? I feel like Follett really missed out on getting to explore the creation of the modern gay identity that was happening around this time. I've always enjoyed the snippets of what queer life was like in any given period he includes and so much could have been done with this time period! - Advice on “Chaos” by Tom O’neillby /u/cranberrydiaper (So many books, so little time) on December 1, 2023 at 2:27 am
Hopefully this is allowed here. I was looking to add more non-fiction into my reading list. Saw a thread in one of the reading subreddits about best true crime books and saw both Helter Skelter recommended heavily but followed up with how you HAVE to read Chaos if you read that to get the whole story. I picked up both and blew through Helter Skelter and found it riveting BUT I knew that Chaos basically posits that large swathes of that book are false so i tried to take it all with a grain of salt. Then I start Chaos and was so excited to learn more and im about 150 pages in and…i don’t know, it feels light. The author keeps making sweeping assumptions that I don’t see at all. I can’t figure out if he just has more info that he’s not including or more explanation will come later or what. He’ll point out some seemingly minor discrepancy or tertiary lie and immediately claim “therefore the prosecution’s whole case is now disproven!” When i often don’t draw that conclusion at all. It’s also extremely drawn out, going into his reporting while not discovering much. I’ve heard nothing but great things about this book, and I’m not hating it I’m more curious to hear some thoughts from others who have read it and either liked it or didn’t. Do the bombshells come later? Am i missing something? Do you agree? Again I hope this is the right place for this just trying to guage at what point I maybe decide this ones not for me. Also any other good true crime classics I should add to my list? Didnt think i was into this genre but was surprised how fascinating i found Helter Skelter. - How to Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill You is a cozy book. My reasons why...by /u/SpringtimeMoonlight (So many books, so little time) on December 1, 2023 at 2:26 am
My book club has a BINGO chart that we try to fill out every month. One of the categories for December is 'Cozy Books'. And I would like to posit, if I may, that How to Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill You by Matthew Inman is indeed cozy. My Points: It has cats. Cats are inherently cozy. Curl up with a good book, a cat, don't get murdered... yeah, that feels right. It's a murder mystery! Murder mysteries are cozy. Who's gonna get murdered by their cat? Probably this reader, but yeah... keeps you guessing! It's got lighthearted humor. Definitely funny, cozy and uplifting... until the murdering begins. Um... umm... yeah, that's all I got for my list. submitted by /u/SpringtimeMoonlight [link] [comments]

- Homer's Odyssey and his unforgettable adventuresby /u/Pandora_box_Hesiod (So many books, so little time) on December 1, 2023 at 12:25 am
The Odyssey served as inspiration for Camões, Virgílio, James Joyce, García Márquez, Guimarães Rosa. It continues and will continue to disturb Western literature. This is the sequence narrated in the Iliad, also written by the Greek poet Homer, the father of mythology and true god of Olympus, as he gave life to the gods, heroes and monsters that we know universally. In the epic poem, we have the hero Odysseus — responsible for designing the famous Trojan Horse in the Iliad — trying to return to his home, on the island of Ithaca. On the way back, he has different adventures. He awakens the wrath of Poseidon, god of the seas, and has to hide on Calypso's Island. Meanwhile, his wife, Penelope, is besieged by several suitors and usurpers. To rescue his wife and his family's heritage, Odysseus faces a series of fantastic adventures across the seas and Greek islands until he returns to the arms of Penelope and her son, Telemachus. Odysseus's journey was originally supposed to last a few days, but it took many years, given the challenges of Poseidon's merciless sea. During the 24 schapters, the hero goes through a panel of events that make him transform as a man. He survived the Cyclops, defeated the sorceress Circe, survived the song of the sirens and the charms of the goddess Calypso, descended into the hell of Hades, had relationships with kingdoms and returned tired, but very wise, to his home, settling again in his space after one of the most overwhelming bloody battles in the history of literature. Popularized thanks to its philosophical appeal, the sirens' song is one of the most important parts of the poem. The episode follows the descent into Hades. Odysseus returns from the most knowledge-filled place. He had spoken with his mother and with Thyresis, in short, walked through a territory that can be thought of as the land of song and enchantment, what tradition will identify as the field of poetic words. The measures taken by the hero when the ship approaches the island of the mermaids speaks of the temptations to dangerous situations that we face. The saga is an allegory for our challenges throughout life. Among its general themes we can point out the moral code about caring for people, being hospitable and sharing what you receive with people. The arrival of the hero in the work is an archetype for all humanity, the return to the comfort and serenity of home, also having a philosophical conflict between free will and destiny. submitted by /u/Pandora_box_Hesiod [link] [comments]
- Struggling with The Great Gatsbyby /u/Tarmogoyf_ (So many books, so little time) on November 30, 2023 at 11:20 pm
I read this book for the first time in high school for class. I've probably read it three or four times since then. I'm trying really hard to get invested in it, but I just don't think I get it. It doesn't resonate with me. I'm giving it another try, as an audiobook this time, and the voice performance definitely helps elevate the material, but still it's a slog. The author is very talented. Mechanically, he's a good writer. The story structure is done well, and the characters are well written. I'm enjoying the dubiousness of the dialog.I just don't... care, I guess. None of the characters make me care about them or their foibles. The lying, cheating, alcoholism, and otherwise pseudo-romantic drama is just something that doesn't engage me in any meaningful way. If the book makes me feel anything, it's irritation at how childish and obsessive the characters are. Which, of course is part of the satire of early 20th century affluence. Am I missing something? I have not read many books like this that just turn me off, especially critically acclaimed ones. I want to make sure I'm approaching it with the right context and frame of mind before I resign myself to the fact that it's probably just not for me. submitted by /u/Tarmogoyf_ [link] [comments]

- The Malagasy Paradoxby /u/ArtHistorian2000 (Africa) on November 30, 2023 at 11:02 pm
Have you heard of the Malagasy Paradox ? Since 1960, Madagascar presents a strange specificity: it is the only country in the world which impoverished since its independence without having a war or major violence. Between 1960 and today, the GDP per capita and the purchasing power per capita was reduced by a third, while the rest of the continent acknowledged a growth which tripled since 1960. https://preview.redd.it/d1ujp3g8fk3c1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=adffb675c87a481946900922b75282d9e18f55b7 According to researchers, nothing fated the island to experience this path: the country is rich in resources, and compared to the rest of the continent, the island is more stable politically, more democratic (even if we are a hybrid regime) and more peaceful. Despite that, Madagascar has among the highest poverty rates on the globe (81% living with 2$ or less in 2022, according to World Bank), and all short periods of quick growth were swept away by consistent internal crisis. https://preview.redd.it/qf0adqeeck3c1.png?width=2140&format=png&auto=webp&s=984a9686b66a3a87a41cda0dc137734a550dd29e The reasons of this performance: a very fragile governmental system, a series of bad political choices (socialism in the 1970-1980's, authoritarian liberalism in the 2000's...), predatory elites unwilling to implement drastic changes, a latent (not strong) opposition between the ethnicities in the center and on the coastal areas, weak infrastructure across the island, endemic corruption and fragility against natural disasters. Between 2018 and 2023, our President, Andry Rajoelina, pledged to catch up all the development delay accumulated since the independence in only 5 years. However, his reforms and actions were unsuccessful, and the COVID-19 crisis and the Russian Invasion of the Ukraine worsened the situation. He won the last elections for a second official term, despite a weak participation of the country in the elections. https://preview.redd.it/taji3kf5gk3c1.jpg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7b13377ed91950d9b0e9746ad0f47052519a45b Today, Madagascar is among the poorest countries in the continent, and with these recent elections, the country stands at the crossroads. How do you envision the growth of Madagascar and its possible integration on the continent ? - What is the book/series that you wanted to like, but could never get into?by /u/DustyBishop (So many books, so little time) on November 30, 2023 at 8:31 pm
Inspired by a recent post I saw, what is a book or series that you really wanted to like but couldn't bring yourself to finish for whatever reason? For me it's the Dresden Files. The story itself is everything I love; magic and monsters clashing with modern reality, great visual storytelling, and so much promise for a massive world to explore. Yet despite constant insistence it gets better with every book, and constant attempts to to get to that point, I have never made it past the third one. If I had to put words to it, the world never seems to pull me in the way other stories do. It's actually a problem for me when reading that I get completely submerged in the reality of that story and I can't consume any other media until that journey is done. Sadly, I never felt it with TDF. submitted by /u/DustyBishop [link] [comments]
- What's a book you read that you now think you weren't old enough to fully appreciate?by /u/justkeepbreathing94 (So many books, so little time) on November 30, 2023 at 8:16 pm
When I was 9, or mybe even 8, I read White Fang by Jack London. As a kid I felt so grown up for having read what I considered an "adult book" at that age. In class we could read a book then on the class computer we could take a multiple choice test on it for points. Childrens books were usually 2 or 3 points, but White Fang was 22 points. I don't remember exactly how I did, but I remember being happy about the score, and I was in the advanced program in elementary school, so I'm assuming I did pretty well. Who knows though. But anyways, I'm positive that the themes, and motifs, and life lessons, and philosophies in that book went right over my little head. I probably only cared about the mother wolf raising the cubs and White Fang fighting the Bulldog. Now looking back at it, there's so much depth. Family bonds, identity, a sense of community, effects of abuse, and on and on. Examining it now as an adult feels like it's a completely new book, and I wasn't old enouigh to appreciate it and understand it the way I can now. That leads to this question. Are there any books that you can appreciate and delve into the layers of more now that you're older and maybe even wiser? submitted by /u/justkeepbreathing94 [link] [comments]

- Alternatives to big yearly reading challengesby /u/khryslo (So many books, so little time) on November 30, 2023 at 6:35 pm
I usually set a bar of at least 12 books a year, as I like books thick enough that you can seriously hurt someone with if you need/want to. Then I recently discovered The 52 Book Club’s 2024 Challenge here, and it really caught my eye. I've had a lot of fun trying to match my books to the prompts and browsing for new ones. I think the idea is a great one, as it should motivate me to read more different books without forcing me completely out of my comfort zone. However, as funny as it may seem, the more I think about this challenge, the more stressed out I get trying to figure out how to make sure I manage to read so many books. I don't want to force myself to read or try to find ways to cheat, like deliberately choosing small books and so on. I realise that this is a challenge to myself and it's no big deal if I don't achieve this goal. I also know that I'm still that person who cried for hours while reading Ulysses, trying to finish the damn book because it was on the required reading list and I refused to read the summary like any sane person would. I fear I will inevitably break under the pressure, which is the last thing I want after it took me years to get back to reading for pleasure. So my question is: what are the alternatives? I would really appreciate suggestions of more approachable challenges. Or maybe someone knows a really huge cool challenge that is so massive that it could be a task of a lifetime. During my research I also came across various book bingos and got a bit lost in them, so perhaps you can recommend ones you liked, or anything else you may have tried and would recommend to others. submitted by /u/khryslo [link] [comments]
