Which one is better to live in – Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
Do you feel like a big city slicker or a small town girl? Edmonton or Calgary – which one is better to live in? Both cities have their pros and cons, but when it comes down to it, we think Calgary takes the cake. Read on to find out why!
Calgary and Edmonton are the 2 biggest cities in Alberta, Canada. The question is which one is better to live in, Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
It is difficult to say which city is better to live in, as it ultimately depends on an individual’s personal preferences and priorities. Both Calgary and Edmonton have their own unique features and attractions, and which city is better for you will depend on what you are looking for in a place to live.
Here are some factors to consider when deciding between Calgary and Edmonton:
Location: Calgary is located in southern Alberta, near the Rocky Mountains, while Edmonton is located in central Alberta. This can be a factor to consider if you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing, or if you prefer a more urban environment.
Cost of living: Both Calgary and Edmonton have a relatively low cost of living compared to other major cities in Canada. However, Calgary tends to be more expensive than Edmonton, particularly in terms of housing costs.
Employment: Both cities have strong economies and a diverse range of industries, including oil and gas, healthcare, and technology. Unemployment rates in both cities are generally low.
Climate: Calgary and Edmonton both have cold winters and warm summers, with Calgary generally experiencing cooler temperatures and more snowfall.
Ultimately, the decision of which city is better to live in will depend on your personal circumstances and what you are looking for in a place to call home. It may be helpful to research and compare the two cities in more detail to determine which one is a better fit for you.

What are the pros and cons of Calgary vs Edmonton.
As someone who has lived in both cities for more than 3 years and is still living in Calgary:
Weather: you have more sunshine and less harsh winter in Calgary with occasional positive temperature in the middle of the winter because of the Chinook winds: Calgary wins
Cost of life: Edmonton rent, home ownership, food, clothing is slightly cheaper than same items in Calgary: Edmonton wins
Job Opportunities: more blue collar jobs in Edmonton, more white collar jobs in Calgary: tie
Education: Edmonton has one of the top university in Canada called University of Alberta. University of Calgary has a first class business school called Hayskane school of business. Edmonton wins.
City’s architecture: Calgary seems newer, nicely architected and just more beautiful to me by far: Calgary wins
People: just the same to me, no difference: tie
Size and population: Calgary (1.3 million people, 825 km2) is larger and have more people than Edmonton (1 million people, 684 km2): I won’t call this a win
Mountains and lakes :Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Jasper National Park, Waterton Lakes National Park, are all closer to Calgary than Edmonton. Calgary is 1 hour from Banff, and day trips to the mountains are very common. Edmonton is 4 hours from Jasper, and trips to the mountains are more of a long weekend activity: Calgary Wins
Summer festivities: Both cities have great and similar festivals, but Calgary hosts the greatest western festival on earth in July called the Stampede. Sylvan Lake is halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. Calgary wins.
Sunshine: Calgary has way more sunshine that Edmonton. In fact, Calgary is amongst the top city with sunshine exposure in the entire country. Sunshine is happiness. Calgary wins.
Politics: Both cities are economically conservative. Edmonton is a little bit more socially liberal than Calgary. Who cares? Tie.
Sports: Flames(NHL)and Stampeders(CFL)in Calgary, Oiler(NHL) and Eskimos(CFL) in Edmonton. Several amateur leagues, indoor and outdoor facilities for soccer, hockey, basketball, football and baseball in both cities; ShowUpAndPlay in Calgary, ShowUpAndPlay in Edmonton : Tie
Cleanliness: Calgary is one of the cleanness cities in the world. I am in awe myself whenever I walk downtown and in my neighbourhood of Walden. Calgary wins by far.
Public Transit: Calgary C-Train has 3 lines and covers all 4 quadrants of the city(NW, SW,SE,NE) with multiple park and rides location at various C-Train stations. There are buses in almost every neighborhoods in Calgary connecting you to the nearest C-Train station. Edmonton Transit Services (ETS) provides service on buses and light-rail transit within the City of Edmonton limits, in addition to Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, Beaumont, and the Edmonton Garrison at Namao. It also provides connections to suburban transit services. Calgary Wins.
With all that in mind, I’ll choose Calgary any day.

Dear Community Members, It's with great disappointment that I have to bring attention to a recent incident that has been affecting multiple cars in our neighborhood. Last night, several cars, including mine, were egged while parked and driving on our streets. This reckless behavior not only damages property but also poses a significant danger to drivers who might inadvertently use their wipers and smear the egg across their windshields, obscuring their vision and potentially causing accidents. Attached are photos of the aftermath of this irresponsible act. The license plate of the vehicle involved is CSC-9825. If anyone has any information regarding the owner of this car or witnessed the incident, please come forward. We need to work together to ensure the safety and security of our community. Let's condemn such behavior and work towards fostering a safer environment for everyone. Thank you for your attention to this matter. submitted by /u/corpnomadicbeats [link] [comments]
I have been going through the worst time of my life… kicked out of school… been in the hospita due to suicide ideation… and my mom just died. There is still some beautiful people out there don’t give up we are all having a horrible time! Hey around 11 at night, (just 10mins ago) I was sitting in my garage and heard 2 loud and long "WHIRRRRR" noises from outside. Wondering if those were snowbirds or something? Freaked me out and woke my mom up. I'm on the south side kinda by century park / bearspaw area. submitted by /u/Exonificate [link] [comments]
I just heard a super loud noise close to south common that was SO loud. It happened two times for about 5 seconds maybe 30 seconds apart. What the heck is it?? Does anyone know? It sounds like a crazy strong power washer hose hitting my car window but outside, and overwhelmingly loud. If close to it you’d have to get hearing damage. I’ve heard it once before but I never found out what it was. I’m so curious. Does anyone know? Thanks!! submitted by /u/WavyCat_ [link] [comments]
Just trying to sleep but heard some weird loud roar twice coming from outside. Wtf was that? I almost thought it could be a garbage truck, then remembered the time (and I haven't heard anything besides those 2). Edit: also didn't sound like a vehicle, but what do I know I'm tired submitted by /u/thankmybones [link] [comments]

“The aim of this review will be to determine whether the work done so far is moving the workplace in the right direction,” she says. “What issues persist, and what needs to be done differently to further address bullying, harassment and discrimination.” Cornett says the commission has been publicly tracking Calgary police workplace culture since 2011 through employee surveys. She says the commission found out that recommendations were not successfully implemented after a previous workplace review in 2013. “While a lot of work has been done, we also know problems persist,” she says, saying the commission has not seen the desired change when it comes to harassment and gender-based bullying specifically. https://calgary.citynews.ca/2024/03/27/calgary-police-commission-workplace-review-angela-whitney/ submitted by /u/CorndoggerYYC [link] [comments]
Around 7pm a weiner dog was loose running down crowfoot in the direction heading towards Dalhousie. Several trucks stopped to barricade the poor terrified dog in and several people were trying to beckon him towards them…. Does anyone know what happened? Was the dog able to be caught? Hello, I want to get a group of friends together, (badly) make some pottery on the wheels (not just air dry) while listening to music and having a good time in a private booking. The closest I can find through traditional methods (googling and emailing) required a minimum of 16 people through the whistling potter. It’s possible but highly unlikely that I could get that many people together . Does anyone have any recommendations of places? submitted by /u/defender5371 [link] [comments]

Hi everyone, My 3.5 month old daughter needs to get bloodwork done. We got a requisition and I specifically called to make the appointment at the lab so the person on the phone could note it in the chart that it was for a baby. We went to the lab in Ranchlands and despite this note the nurse was completely shocked that it was for my daughter. She acted very unsure as she poked at my daughter’s arm with her finger looking for a vein then left the room to get backup. The second nurse also didn’t seem confident and said “well we can try.” It made us feel extremely uncomfortable so we left without having it done. Now I’m not sure where to go. Apparently they don’t do it at the children’s hospital anymore (says my doctor - is this true?) and my doctor referred us to the magic clinic in the ne who doesn’t do it either. Does anyone have any suggestions on where else to go? I don’t really want to go to a lab again because it seems like a total crapshoot whether you get anyone who’s experienced or competent in this. Thank you!! submitted by /u/Zihaala [link] [comments]
Happy Wednesday! I'm back on schedule this week... This is a continuation of my pattern of posting what I think are decent grocery deals with the hope that this will save some people some money. As noted previously this is heavily skewed to items that I and my family eat. There are probably additional items that are good deals but I don't know it because they aren't items I use but hopefully my list is still useful to you. A few quick reminders: PC Optimum points are collected at No Frills and Superstore. 1,000pts is worth $1. Scene+ points are collected at Safeway, Sobeys and FreshCo. 100pts is worth $1. The value of Save on Foods points depends on what you redeem them for. If you redeem them for a 4L jug of milk then 1,000pts is worth about $1.50. Other redemptions might make them more or less valuable. Superstore, No Frills and FreshCo are generally willing to price match identical products from (some) other major grocery stores if you show them the item in the competitor’s flyer while checking out so knowing what is on sale at stores that you don't visit can still be useful. I'm told that Save on Foods will also price match, though I have no first hand experience with them. There are some restrictions on this... FreshCo won't price match Safeway or Sobeys. Superstore (at least sometimes) won't price match Coop. The No Frills on 85st SW won't price match FreshCo. Finally, thank you to everyone that has posted positive comments. It's always nice to receive positive feedback. Title says it all - I’m still new to Edmonton, and my optometrist/optician had a sit down chat with me surrounding Irlen Syndrome, which is, as it stands, a pseudomedical condition. I think it’s time to go elsewhere. I’m looking for an optometrist who works with fairly profound astigmatisms and their associations (migraines, perception issues, light sensitivity, and so on). Anyone have any recommendations? submitted by /u/CapStelliun [link] [comments]

Jacob Giraldo Mejia was on his way to work at a downtown diner just before 9 a.m. on March 16 when he was assaulted by another passenger as they exited a city bus near 1st Street and 8th Avenue S.W. Giraldo Mejia says he didn't even see the man behind him throw the punch that shattered his jaw. "(It) was fractured in two areas," he said, adding he received surgery at Foothills hospital. "I have four plates in my jaw." The teen says he called 911 right away. Peter Wiebe, 25, was charged with assault causing bodily harm, obstruction of an officer and possession of government ID in another person's name. https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/random-transit-attack-leaves-calgary-youth-with-serious-injuries-police-charge-man-in-connection-1.6822949 submitted by /u/CorndoggerYYC [link] [comments]
