Why can’t a macOs be installed in a Windows computer?

Why can’t a macOS be installed in a Windows computer?

macOS, also known as Mac OS X, is a proprietary operating system developed and maintained by Apple Inc. for use on Apple’s Macintosh computers. This operating system is not designed to be installed on non-Apple hardware, such as a Windows computer. This is because macOS is specifically built to work with Apple’s hardware and software ecosystem, and is therefore not compatible with the hardware and software of a Windows computer. Additionally, Apple has put in place technical and legal restrictions to prevent macOS from being installed on non-Apple hardware.

Why can’t a macOS be installed in a Windows computer?

Apple don’t want that to happen.

Not because they want to extract more money from hardware sales (Apple hardware is actually cheap for the quality you get anyway), not because they wouldn’t sell OS X as a product if they could.

It’s really simple: they did the math on the support costs of random third party hardware, and the numbers came up “nope”.

Apple actually did this long before OS X was a thing; for a short while you could actually get a licensed non-Apple MacOS computer.

But the support costs killed it.

To actually do this and make money, they’d have to sell OS X for a couple of thousand dollars, or maybe a subscription at about $50/month. That’s to pay for the three or four thousand developers and ten or so thousand support people they’d have to hire to deal with all the random crap hardware out there.

And it still wouldn’t meet their quality targets anyway.

So how can Microsoft do it?

They get the OEMs and hardware manufacturers to deal with most of it. Which they mostly do badly, but people have somehow become used to the resulting mess.

Making the OS itself free does mean that they don’t want people to install it on third party hardware because that would mean zero profits from the extra user (unless they use services such as iCloud in a premium fashion — more than just what’s given free).

I guess that makes the hackintoshing phenomenon an issue. Now, when the support for the last Intel based Mac ends hackintoshing will be a real issue (I mean, some explicitly limit themselves to High Sierra because of some NVidia GPUs that aren’t supported on newer versions at all…). But for now, if you have good, compatible hardware, you can reap the benefits just fine.

I am currently a hackintosher but intend to get an actual MacBook Pro (Intel based) soon. Wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t get a good hackintosh. So I’d say, don’t fight those who try it out like this and then migrate to actual Apple products, since that’s actually a profit vector. Only fight those that do it despite that.

The better question to ask is “How does Linux do it?”. You can find drivers for most of “the random crap hardware out there”… You can “google yourself” the support for most of the issues you’d run into, unlike Windows, etc. Support is a “thing” mostly for corporate users. Companies need someone to sue in case they’d somehow lose a penny because of hw/sw issues.

Using Windows would be much better than hackintoshing. Windows has its issues, it is not as reliable as macOS. However, Windows is much more flexible than macOS. It is much more programmer friendly than macOS. Most of the advantages of macOS will cease to exist once you take it out of the integration with Apple hardware.

You can, not so easily, run the OSX on a windows machine as you would run a second version of windows or Linux or any other OS. My current machine has around 4 different OS in 2 drives. The machine was originally assembled keeping in mind running it on OSX, endearingly known by the community as Hackintoshs. I did run an OSX version of Snow Leopard for a few months but didn’t have much use of it as I already own a MacBook Pro. A fun project but not without hastles.

Also, I did shift my 10+ year old MacBooks drive into the machine, before writing this reply, just for fun. Given the changes over time, the OSX failed to recognise half the peripherals which is solvable, but would need a lot of work.

You can. Such computers are called a “Hackintosh.” The procedure is totally unsupported, but I suppose it can save the user some money, when it works.

It’s not that it can’t. It’s a violation of the end-user license. If you’d like to give a try, just google out Hackintosh. I am not aware of any prosecution if you do. Definitely nothing like the infamous Microsoft initiated BSA raids on companies and individual users.

  • What is the best way to transfer data from my old Mac?
by /u/lucarichterich81 (Mac) on May 1, 2024 at 9:40 pm

Hello everyone, I finally did the switch to Apple Silicon. I want to transfer all the files form my old Mac mini (2018, i3, 1TB SSD, 64GB RAM) to my new Macbook (M3 Pro, 16", 1TB, 18GB RAM, silver). I have an internet connection of roughly 100MB/s over wired ethernet. I also have a 3M Thunderbolt 3 Pro cable from Apple. And lastly, I could use a SanDisk G-Drive with 6TB (HDD) where I already have a Time Machine backup. It's about ~450GB of data, consisting of downloads, RAW photos and videos, Logic Pro loop library and around 120GB of Apple Music downloads. Will things like the Logic loops and the Music downloads also be transferred over? And what's the fastest transfer method I can use? Thanks! submitted by /u/lucarichterich81 [link] [comments]

by /u/clitoris_is_a_myth (Mac) on May 1, 2024 at 9:04 pm

So today I opened Finder and noticed the Network tab under Locations. I have never seen this before on my Macbook. There is a simple of a PC and it says "vodafone". I was wondering if this is something to worry about or not? I can't find much online about anything to do with the Network tab and I'm not brilliant with computers really. I did read that these are just devices connected to my network, and I am with Vodafone with my phone and have a Vodafone WIFI router, but it says it is a PC? • Safari was CRAZY slow until I found this...
by /u/digital_r1nzl3r (Mac) on May 1, 2024 at 8:49 pm

I was always having issue with Safari being slow on Mac and I really wanted to use it (I am all in with Apple stuff in my home). So I decided to really poke around and see what could be causing the issue. Turns out...I somehow created a RIDICULOUS amount of tab groups. (see image below, I could keep scrolling and scrolling...it was that bad). [Imgur](https://i.imgur.com/9HKNMQ2.png) I had to disable Safari syncing with all devices except one (my Mac) and then delete the tab groups one by one. This took me a long time but I eventually got them all deleted. I waited about 20 min or so to let everything sync properly. Re-enabled sync on the other devices and the tab groups were finally gone. What a HUGE difference this made with performance on Safari on Mac. I wonder if anyone has run into this issue (or even realizes if they have a crap ton of tab groups being generated in Safari). submitted by /u/digital_r1nzl3r [link] [comments]

  • 'Item' Tab in 'Find My' doesn't work.
by /u/Branddu (Mac) on May 1, 2024 at 8:22 pm

Not sure if I'm allowed this sort of request here but I'm desperate. I have a 2020 13"Macbook Pro and a 2020 27" I Mac and I'm trying to use 'Find My' for the first time on both to add a couple of Chipolo trackers. All the settings are correct re. permissions for Keychain,Network ,Location etc. etc. on both machines. I can see both machines and their locations on 'Find My', but when I press 'Item' to add the tracker I only get a 'learn more' tab with no option to press 'Add' (+), and if I press it I'm led to an Apple help page which tells me to add items by pressing 'Item' and selecting 'add'.. The instructions on the Chipolo are to press 'Item' and then Add +, so no help there. I don't use an Iphone so that's an avenue I can't use. Am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions gratefully accepted. submitted by /u/Branddu [link] [comments]

Hello! I have a waterdamaged 2020 macbook air, the dealership gave me a quote for the repairs that surpassed the price of a new macbook. The diagnostics said that the mother plate and screen module should be replaced. Now I have bought a new macbook and this waterdamaged one is just sitting in my shelf for months. Is there any uses for it that would be worth the time? Idk if people would want it for parts? It has some dings and scratches on its body aswell. • MacBook Air for development
by /u/c6897 (Mac) on May 1, 2024 at 8:04 pm

I’m a computer science student. I’m looking at buying an M3 MacBook Air 16gb/512gb. I really like the portability of it. Desk space is very limited at my school, and I often get crammed next to other students. Right now we really just write light scripts and programs. Will I regret using an air when I start working on bigger projects? The fanless design kind of scares me. How does the air handle things like VMs, docker, compiling big projects, etc. Should I go with a pro model if I only use it for development, browser, discord, spotify, things like that? submitted by /u/c6897 [link] [comments]

  • What Mac laptop should I get
by /u/Imaginary-Bottle-666 (Mac) on May 1, 2024 at 4:57 pm

Been to Best Buy and there was MacBook Air m2 for 849.99 and they seem to have amazing build quality. I want to explore my options but all the windows laptops even at 1000$ felt very cheap and crappy. The Windows OS just doesn’t feel fluid and smooth and polished like it does in MacBooks. The surface laptops look decently built but MacBooks have superior battery life. I’ve had previous windows laptops like a 800 dollar dell laptop and the speakers were crackling and making popping noises. Had to look at YouTube about downloading drivers. Just a pain in the ass. submitted by /u/Imaginary-Bottle-666 [link] [comments]

  • Why my SanDisk Portable SSD (exFAT format) doesn't work on my Mac?
by /u/g8kberk (Mac) on May 1, 2024 at 4:34 pm

Hi mates, I just buy a SanDisk Extreme 1TB Portable SSD to store my files. By using a Windows PC, I copied my files from my old External HHD (NTFS format) to my new SanDisk Portable SSD (exFAT format). After that, when I was checking the copied files on SDD by using Mac, I can not see the files. The SSD has been detected but I can't see any files in it. I can see only the software install files. The SSD is also visible on Disk Utility and I can see almost the half of the disk is used. But the files that are using that storage is not visible on Finder. (check the screenshot below) As I read, exFAT format should be working both Mac and Windows computers. I didn't understand why this happening. Do you have any idea why I can't see my files? I want to use this SSD on both my computers (Mac and Windows, but mostly on Mac). What is your suggestions for that? Screenshot for Finder, Disk Utility, and Info tabs. submitted by /u/g8kberk [link] [comments]

  • I feel about my mac the same way I feel about my refrigerator.
by /u/in_the_Yukon (Mac) on May 1, 2024 at 4:13 pm

That is to say, when I see my refrigerator, I don't think how it can get any better. It does what it's supposed to do. Basically, refrigerator has reached its peak technology. The same goes for most household technology: fans, washing machine, etc. I couldn't say the same thing about computers until now. I really cannot see how the current M2 Air can get any better for my purpose. This display is great, it never hangs, it can multitask crazy, the gestures are amazing, the speakers are downright magical, it has no fans, yet it's uncomfortably cold to touch, battery lasts at least a day. Honestly, unless I break it, I don't feel like ever needing to replace it. The only place I can see improvement is GPU performance, but that doesn't really apply to me. Does anyone feel the same? submitted by /u/in_the_Yukon [link] [comments]

So I upgraded from my 2017 MBP to an M3 Pro with 36GB of RAM 2 weeks ago, and I think I am addicted to this thing… I can’t stop using it, I love coding on it, computer vision inference is so quick, watching stuff, messing with all the settings, downloading torrents, looking at the screensaver.. by /u/LuckyCat95 (Mac) on May 1, 2024 at 2:31 pm

Ok, so please be kind. Id consider myself a average tech aware person. I built my own gaming PC a while back, make regular upgrades, and can pretty much figure my way around every average tech, right? Well. Until i switched jobs and had to use a Mac. Sure, there were some learning curves but I'm getting the hang of it. However, one thing I'm losing my mind over is how to get my Mac to connect to this freaking monitor. For info, I have a Mac Air book (M1) running on Sonoma. It has two USBC ports on the side, and nothing else. The monitor I was given is what I believe to be a MC914 Apple Thunderbolt 27' display. It has no like, number or thing I can look up labeled anywhere on the monitor, so I'm using by best judgement and the cords. I've attached pictures with what I am workong with. So far I have tried: A Mini Dp to a USBC directly monitor to MacBook. A mini DP to HDMI cord to a HDMI to USBC adapter. Connecting via Bluetooth (a last ditch effort) What on earth do I need to buy in order to make these two interact. I also don't even see a power button, so I'm assuming it boots up when it connects? I just want to use a larger screen so my clients at work can see what I'm talking about. submitted by /u/LuckyCat95 [link] [comments]
