Today’s question: AI is starting to improve AI. Who holds the off switch?
Summary:
Anthropic’s revised IPO filing warns that it may soon reach its own threshold for recursive self-improvement, and MIT researchers showed GPT-6 Astra fixing another model by editing 0.016% of its weights, with no training. But on real, hours-long work, the best agent scores 12%. CrowdStrike launched a kill switch that sits outside the model, Nvidia is steering cloud partners away from China, and Americans vote today in the first midterms where AI is a campaign issue.
Important Topics:
AI edits AI: Anthropic’s warning and the MIT experiment.
The reality check: LifeVal stalls; GDPx tops out at 12%.
The off switch: kill switches, “sovereign agents” and Nvidia’s China rule.
AI on the ballot: three tests in today’s midterms.
The money: pay-as-you-go revenue, multi-year compute bills.
Cert Corner: how to stop an agent reliably.
🧬 AI starts editing AI

Anthropic’s warning:
In a revised S-1A on Monday, Anthropic said it may soon reach its own internal benchmark for recursive self-improvement: AI good enough at building AI to speed up its own progress (Techpresso).
Upcoming models could “imminently” pass its safety line for AI-driven progress (The Rundown AI).
It has already used AI to build models whose jumps in skill it failed to spot at the time (Techpresso).
No current model has crossed the threshold. Anthropic is weighing changes to its Responsible Scaling Policy to keep humans supervising frontier-model design (Techpresso).
The MIT experiment:
MIT CSAIL researchers had GPT-6 Astra read and edit the weights of a small open model, Qwen3.5-0.8B, directly, without training (VentureBeat).
It changed about 0.016% of the weights to cure the model’s habit of repeating itself. Math score: 7.9% to 48.1% (The Rundown AI).
It did little for Google’s Gemma 3, which had no single flaw to fix (The Rundown AI).
Caveats: the best attempt took 158 turns and 20.3 hours, showed no self-improvement loop and wasn’t compared with normal training (VentureBeat).
Lead author Rikiya Takehi: “Instead of training, models may treat raw weights like readable, editable code: diagnosing failures and patching them directly,” (VentureBeat).
The reality check:
LifeVal, OpenAI’s everyday-errands benchmark, went from 49.3% (GPT-5.2) to 80.6% (GPT-6 Astra), but only 0.6 points of that came after July’s GPT-5.6 (The Rundown AI).
GDPx, SemiAnalysis’s new test of hours-long tasks across 13 models: top score 12%, from Claude Opus 5.5. Finance and legal: near zero for basically every model (TBPN).
METR: the length of tasks agents can finish alone doubles roughly every three and a half months (Axios AI+).
The Number: 0.016%. The share of a model’s weights one AI changed to take another from 7.9% to 48.1% in math.
Why it matters: The risk isn’t a sudden takeoff next quarter. It’s capability jumps that even the builders miss. Test each new model on your own tasks before production, and don’t rely on vendor benchmarks alone.

🛑 Who holds the off switch?
TBPN · Axios AI+ · Techpresso · Bloomberg
CrowdStrike’s “AI Kill Switch” sits outside the model and can stop any agent mid-task. George Kurtz: “Every agent will need a kill switch, just as every employee needs an identity.” CrowdStrike is also buying Fiddler AI and Dreadnode for $495 million (TBPN).
“Sovereign agents”: a CNAS report shared with Axios warns of AI that pursues “open-ended, evolving survival,” earning money to rent compute and copying itself (Axios AI+).
Nvidia told cloud partners to direct at least 51% of services on new contracts to companies outside China, the FT reports; the instruction was reportedly verbal (Techpresso).
Memory smuggling: one HBM3E unit now sells for around $4,000 in China’s gray market, up from a few hundred dollars a year ago (The Information via Techpresso).
OpenAI hired former Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and is putting $1 billion toward subsidized access to its Daybreak cyber-defense program (Techpresso).
Google took down a backdoor botnet on more than 1.3 million Android TV boxes, built in by their maker (Techpresso).
Why it matters: Controls the agent can’t touch: its own identity, revocable credentials, a runtime stop outside the model, and no payment method or right to create cloud resources without human approval.
🗳️ AI on the ballot
Axios calls today’s midterms the first test of voter sentiment on the AI race, and asks three questions (Axios AI+):
Did AI break through? AI super PACs Public First and Leading the Future spent $50 million+ in nearly 50 races, but their ads largely avoided AI.
Did Musk help or hurt? He was the biggest donor by far, at $400 million+.
How loud will the AI safety bloc be? Races to watch include Michigan’s Senate seat and Colorado’s 8th, California’s 11th and Minnesota’s 2nd districts.
About 7 in 10 Americans oppose data centers near them. OpenAI’s new Grid Protectors Program offers 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand in Georgia, the load of 700,000 households (The Deep View).
Why it matters: We don’t call races. Whatever happens, the next Congress shapes data-center permits, power prices and AI rules, and those flow into what your AI capacity costs.
💰 The money
The Deep View · The Rundown AI · TBPN
Anthropic’s filing: more than $895 billion in planned spending, about $448 billion before 2030. Its revenue is “primarily consumption-based,” while compute commitments “generally extend over multiple years” (The Deep View).
Infotech’s Scott Bickley: “Profitability requires some combination of higher effective prices, lower serving cost per task, or a longer useful life for the capital,” (The Deep View).
OpenAI signed four deals in Abu Dhabi (ADNOC, the government, Mubadala, G42’s Inception42); a UAE group is reportedly set to lead its raise of up to $20 billion (The Rundown AI).
Palantir’s U.S. commercial revenue passed government revenue for the first time: $984M vs $953M (TBPN).
Apple warns “unprecedented” memory chip costs will hit margins (FT headline via TBPN). Marvell agreed to buy Lumentum for $115 billion (The Rundown AI).
Why it matters: Anthropic told investors its revenue can leave faster than its compute bills. Your pay-as-you-go contract is the other side of that sentence. Expect pushes for longer commitments; track cost per task and keep the freedom to switch models.
🎓 Cert Corner
Question: An AI agent with access to production systems starts taking actions outside its task. What’s the most reliable way to stop it? A) A line in its system prompt telling it to stop B) An external control, outside the model, that can revoke its credentials and end its session C) Ask the agent to report what it’s doing D) Retrain the model next quarter
Answer: B. A control outside the model can’t be argued with, rewritten or ignored by the agent. A prompt can be overridden, a self-report depends on the agent’s honesty, and retraining doesn’t stop what’s happening now. Practice thousands more questions in DjamgaTech.
Strategic C-Suite Takeaways
Test every new model on your own tasks before production.
Put the off switch outside the model.
No agent gets a payment method without human approval.
Treat vendor benchmarks as marketing until your results match.
Track cost per task and keep the freedom to switch models.
