  • What has been your biggest disappointment (so far)?
by /u/OsChMoScH (So many books, so little time) on January 31, 2023 at 9:23 am

Have you ever heard of a classic or bestseller that turned out to be a total disappointment? Everyone likes it, but you've wondered why? For me, it's "Dune" by Frank Herbert. I was looking forward to reading this classic of science fiction, but it reads like a medieval novel written as homework by a ninth grader. The pages are filled with conversations about trivia. Esoteric, pathetic ramblings and little going on. I understand that the story about worms and stuff is kind of creative, but for a book of this length it's just lame. Did you have a similar experience? Just in case, maybe I'll dodge a bullet submitted by /u/OsChMoScH [link] [comments]

  • If you read History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera, what were your favorite quotes/metaphors/symbolism mentioned in the book? How would you interpret those quotes?
by /u/burnnaccount (So many books, so little time) on January 31, 2023 at 6:20 am

Title. I really only found one metaphor in the book (the puzzle piece) and want to find more in the book—there HAS to be more—but I don’t want to reread it because it will ruin my life for the second time. If you know of a quote/metaphors/symbolisms please let me know! I have a journal of all quotes from books and only have one (the puzzle piece) but want to add more. submitted by /u/burnnaccount [link] [comments]

  • Does anyone know when (or if) Harlan Ellison's I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream will be in print again?
by /u/No-Im-The-Walrus (So many books, so little time) on January 31, 2023 at 6:02 am

I bought a physical copy of the book a year or two ago and was really surprised to see that it's completely out of print now. Months ago I saw someone online mention that a different publisher owns the rights to it now and will hopefully be releasing new editions of the book soon. But that was a while ago and I haven't heard anything about it since. Does anyone know when/if the book will ever be in print again? submitted by /u/No-Im-The-Walrus [link] [comments]

  • Would you ever paint/spray the edges of your own book?
by /u/thatvampiregirl (So many books, so little time) on January 31, 2023 at 5:58 am

I've seen a girl on TikTok who paints these really beautiful pictures on the side of books but I don't think she sells them. And there's a lot of books, especially paperbacks, that I love and wish had sprayed edges. Not even necessarily designs, just edges that are painted a solid color. And when I looked it up on YouTube I saw a lot of people doing it themselves with spray paint, paint brushes and even airbrush. But I'm wondering if it's too much of a risk to do it at home yourself. It seems like it would be cheaper than having a book custom painted but I also don't know what kind of paint would be the safest and if the risk would even be worth it. What do you guys think? Would you ever paint the edges of your books yourself and if you did what kind of paint would you use? Or do you think it's too big of a risk to ever bother to try? submitted by /u/thatvampiregirl [link] [comments]

  • Which sequel are you thirstiest for?
by /u/Bookanista (So many books, so little time) on January 31, 2023 at 5:47 am

For me it is the sequel to Jasper Fforde’s absolutely perfect Shades of Grey. It’s a stunningly detailed, imaginative dystopia. It is hard to summarize. It’s a book to read if you like books. Just talking about it makes me want to read it all over again. A+ corker of a book. It came out in 2009 and ended on a cliffhanger! The sequel is allegedly getting published this summer, but I refuse to believe it until I see it. submitted by /u/Bookanista [link] [comments]

  • Finally read East of Eden - Review and reflection
by /u/mikaelnguyen (So many books, so little time) on January 31, 2023 at 5:05 am

After many years planning to read and a lengthy reading process, I finally got through East of Eden. In my opinion, John Steinbeck’s magnum opus, is a thought provoking, emotional exercise. John Steinbeck’s subtle profound quotes cut through his impeccable use of imagery by stimulating all 5 senses with his words. Like most books, there are highs and lows with pacing. I think that overall, the exhilarating highs definitely outweigh the lows, but the lows can really be a real slog. I found the story of Adam and Charles to be far more tantalizing than the story of Aaron and Caleb. I didn’t entirely dislike the last quarter of the book but I really did not like Aaron as a character. The ending was a masterful example of how to finish a book. Although the discussion of naming Adam’s kids were in the middle of the book, I felt it appropriate to end the books tying back to the real start of Adam’s life. 8 folded page corners/10 📚 submitted by /u/mikaelnguyen [link] [comments]

  • Classic literature that’s also very readable.
by /u/MinxyMyrnaMinkoff (So many books, so little time) on January 31, 2023 at 4:27 am

I am currently reading Tender is the Night by F Scott Fitzgerald and I’m surprised by how contemporary it feels, it’s really a psycho-sexual mystery, more like The Silent Patient than a century-old novel with weighty themes. So, I thought I’d make a post on the most “readable” classic literature. That way we can all impress our friends by dropping fancy names, while enjoying a beach-read-in-disguise! Here’s what I came up with: -Far from the Madding Crowd, by Thomas Hardy. This book is a Norah Ephron movie in literal sheep’s clothing. It’s a romcom, right down to the meet-cutes. -Robinson Crusoe, by Daniel Defoe. This classic novel is over 300-years-old but it’s also basically Island of the Blue Dolphins with 100% more anxiety about elusive cannibals. -The Picture of Dorian Grey, by Oscar Wilde. This readable classic could be a Seth Rogan movie, it’s even got a Danny McBride-type who just sits around and insults his friends all day. -Old Man and the Sea, by Ernest Hemingway. It’s super short with tons of sharks. It’s like Jaws, if the old alcoholic didn’t let the other two guys come on the boat with him, which is to say: it’s like Jaws but better. Anyone else have leads on fancy old books that are actually easy, fun reads? submitted by /u/MinxyMyrnaMinkoff [link] [comments]

  • What should we be doing now in Africa with regards to yet to mature but promising technologies like quantum computing?
by /u/mabhudhi (Africa) on January 31, 2023 at 3:42 am

I came across this article The world is heading for a 'quantum divide': here's why it matters | World Economic Forum (weforum.org) and it made me ask, why is Africa absent here and what role can we play now not to be left behind again? Yes, I know there are a number of initiatives across the continent especially through universities in Tunisia, Egypt, South Africa, Rwanda, Morocco, Algeria to name a few but I know not of any significant AU or government investments yet. Do we need a quantum strategy as a continent, or it doesn't matter? Je, tutakuwa sawa? submitted by /u/mabhudhi [link] [comments]

  • The Cutting Season - Attica Locke
by /u/Indifferent_Jackdaw (So many books, so little time) on January 31, 2023 at 2:04 am

This is a Masterclass on atmosphere, which Locke uses to create an intense feeling of peril for her characters. To the extent that I was so scared for Ceran and her daughter that I would get overwhelmed and have to put the book down. But I still had to know what happened and it kept drawing me back in. This is some of the best characterisation I've read in a book, the clarity and realism of the characters is so good. How they interact with each other is so natural. There is no Vaseline fuzzing the lens. I had no distance from these characters. Ceran, the investigator is not police, but it feels natural for her to investigate to protect her daughter and the workers she feels responsible for. To find some justice for the dead woman whose struggle mirrored that of her ancestors. The plotting is on the minimal side, I would say it was very successful until the ending, which was good, but not great. If the writing and characters are easy five stars, I would say the plot is a four star. Normally not having a great climax in a mystery book would be a pretty big negative for me, but in this case because it is so much about the character and she does have a very satisfying arc, I would still overall go five stars. I would recommend for those who like their genre books with that bit of extra quality. I would recommend for Lit Fic peeps who might want to dip a toe into a genre book which explores some really interesting themes. I would recommend for those who like character led fiction. I would not recommend for those who like a lot of pace and action. I would not recommend for those who want a low-stakes read. Once I've recovered, I can't wait to read more Attica Locke books, so she can put me through the ringer again. submitted by /u/Indifferent_Jackdaw [link] [comments]

  • My thoughts after finishing The Last Unicorn
by /u/northern_wyvern (So many books, so little time) on January 31, 2023 at 1:24 am

What a book! At the end i got a feeling that few literary works have managed to bestow me. Let me explain. I have read books that feel like marathons, worthwhile experiences yes but so long you feel exhausted when they finally end. Some on the other hand are like sweets, where they always leave you craving for more. The Last Unicorn's ending left me feeling warm, for lack of a better word. The last chapter closes the story in a bittersweet but still satisfying way, it continues for as long as it needs to and not a page more ~perfect. submitted by /u/northern_wyvern [link] [comments]
