  • Horror-curious
by /u/ExpectoPropolis (So many books, so little time) on March 28, 2024 at 2:13 pm

TLDR: can someone afraid of horror movies still enjoy the genre in books? I’m wondering how different the reading experience of horror books is compared to watching a movie? Does reading as opposed to watching take the visceral reaction out of it? I’m imaging jump scares vs a creepy feeling that makes you look behind to see if anything is there. I’m a big baby when it comes to horror movies, but simultaneously curious about many books that are in the genre. What are some good entry level books for the horror-curious reader? Is everyone going to say Steven King? 🙂 (Examples of books I’ve been curious about: Annihilation, Our Share of Night, Tender is the Flesh, Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampire - just to name a few) submitted by /u/ExpectoPropolis [link] [comments]

Ever since i read All Quiet on the Western Front and discovered they took out the Mild Spoiler shitting together scene in the version i was reading, ive been wary of older editions of books. The Signet version (1955/57) of On The Road by Jack Kerouac fell into my lap and i wanna read it but not if its gonna be censored. • Weird question about The Great American Novel
by /u/WinesburgOhio (So many books, so little time) on March 28, 2024 at 12:57 pm

About 10+ years ago, I had never heard of the book Winesburg, Ohio, but if you can't tell by my user name, it's now one of my absolute favorites. Here's where the weirdness comes in. I'm 99% sure that I only learned about it when casually scrolling through wikipedia's page on the Great American Novel about 10-15 years ago to see how many books were considered the GAN to some degree. It had a fairly memorable title, and a year or so later I was at a friend's housewarming party, and they had a huge set of book shelves built into the walls in the basement that were mostly filled with books left there by the sellers who were old, and I believe one of them had already died of some type of cancer (based on a whole section of books about this). I spent some time looking through those shelves, and my friend told me I could have whatever from the majority of them filled with came-with-the-house titles. There was an old copy of Winesburg, Ohio, and I remembered the title from that GAN list, so I took it and ended up falling in love with it. More recently I checked the wiki page for Great American Novel, and this book is nowhere to be seen on it. I don't want to go through the page's gargantuan revision history, but I feel like I'm in some sort of personal Mandela Effect about this book being on this list. Does anyone have any idea if this book was on this list at any point, or if there's some other easy-to-find list I may have been looking at to discover this title? submitted by /u/WinesburgOhio [link] [comments]

  • I just DNFed the Count of Monte Cristo.
by /u/Ready-Challenge7480 (So many books, so little time) on March 28, 2024 at 12:57 pm

I am going through the hardest time of my life. I wanted a good distraction, and what's better than a 1276-page book about revenge? It just added to my misery. The first 100 pages were solid. I liked how the events were fast-paced, I liked Abbe Faria, the despair, the hope, the depth of human feelings in prison. Things fell apart the moment Dantes escaped. From around page 100 to 600, I tried to give the book a chance, but all I got were endless descriptions for the slightest detail and endless dialogues that seemed pointless. The dialogues that had meaning could be summed up in 10 pages. I am so disappointed. The pages from 100 to 600 could have been reduced to 30. I didn't pick the abridged version because I wanted to savor the whole beauty of a classic, but what was that? This will give me a very long reading slump, which is the last thing I need now. Maybe the book is not for me, although I have no specific liking in fiction. I read everything, but this one was the biggest letdown since I started reading. PS. I read the translation by Robin Buss, the Penguin Classics edition. I wanted to read s summary when I reached page 300, but at this point, I guess I will never know what will happen, since I am ready to throw myself out of the window from the boredom. submitted by /u/Ready-Challenge7480 [link] [comments]

  • A question about Red Dragon by Thomas Harris
by /u/cinnamonbunsmusic (So many books, so little time) on March 28, 2024 at 12:14 pm

Sometimes I end up reading book series in the wrong order. In this case, I started with Silence of the Lambs, pushed on through Hannibal and finished up with Red Dragon. I didn’t particularly plan this, but that’s how it went. Like many others my age, I picked these books up because I’ve loved the on-screen versions of Dr Lecter - both Hopkins and Mikkelsen. I remember watching the Red Dragon movie many years go but I really don’t recall anything about it, so I was looking forward to a fresh experience. All I really knew about the book was that it was the introduction to Hannibal as a character, but I was under the impression that he was Will Graham’s therapist (thanks to the TV show). I wasn’t displeased at all to find out how wrong I was. I thoroughly enjoyed Dolarhyde and the book in general, but I am confused about something… Essentially, I don’t understand Dr Hannibal’s inclusion in the story at all. I hope by now you all realise that I love him as a character and I’m super grateful he exists, but his role in this particular book doesn’t really make any sense to me. In short: Dr Lecter’s purpose in the book is to have 1 uncomfortable meeting with Graham, vaguely offer advice that frankly wasn’t huge, write 1 letter to Dolarhyde pointing him to Graham, and then write a couple letters to Graham just to freak him out. There’s no relationship between him and Crawford, he hardly helps the investigation, he didn’t really need to turn Dolarhyde to Graham (I’m sure the Dragon would’ve done that), there’s no great psychological manipulation of Graham from Lecter, etc. His role in this story would make a boatload more sense if Hannibal and Will had the relationship of therapist and patient (as in the TV show) or at very least had some kind of cat and mouse hunt for each other before Hannibal was imprisoned. But as far as I can see, Will just knew he was guilty by chance on their first meeting. The only possible answer to my question (that I can see) is that Harris was setting up Hannibal for the next few books, but honestly that’s a pretty weak argument considering how he’s almost irrelevant to every character. Wouldn’t a better set up be to give Lecter a little bit more substance to grow from? The other side of this coin iss that Lecter was incidental and Harris only explored that idea later. But if that’s the case, why on earth did he even include the character? I think what I’m trying to get at is that if I had read this book when it had come out, the entire existence of Hannibal Lecter would make no sense to me from a story-telling perspective in this book alone. I loved this book but I am perplexed. submitted by /u/cinnamonbunsmusic [link] [comments]

  • Gould's Book of Fish is a wild ride.
by /u/hendergle (So many books, so little time) on March 28, 2024 at 12:03 pm

I just finished "Gould's Book of Fish" (subtitled: "A Book in Twelve Fish") by Richard Flanagan. The only word I can use to describe it is: Whoa. What a wild ride. I feel like I've just lived that entire life with all of its insane ups and downs. I set it down, with this mixed feeling of elation, horror, amazement, and awe. Knowing that it is (extremely) loosely based on a real person and real events messes with my head even more than the novel itself. The book hits hard. That's as much as I want to say because it's so unique that almost ANY detail would be a spoiler. submitted by /u/hendergle [link] [comments]

  • Where were you and what were you reading that you will never forget?
by /u/fm2606 (So many books, so little time) on March 28, 2024 at 11:55 am

For me it was Gone With The Wind, Christmas Eve / Day, 1992. It was around midnight, I was sitting on an ammo can waiting for my jet to return. I was reading by the light of a Light-All (light towers that you see construction workers use during the night - in the U.S. at least) I was 22 y/o, in the Air Force and was a crew chief on F-15s. We were deployed to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia to support the Southern No Fly Zone. I think there are several reasons I will always remember this. We were flying 24/7, fully loaded with live missiles and ammo. Missions were 2 or 4 hours with 2 jets up at a time. This was opposed to the Spring of 91 when were there we flew mainly training missions, similar to when we were state side at our home base It was the first time I didn't make it back home for Christmas. (Note, don't call your mom and tell her it is your first time not making it home for Christmas - she will probably start crying like my mother did. Whoops!) It was one of the coldest winters I ever experienced and I grew up in the midwest. I was surprised how cold the desert can get. Gone With The Wind was such a great book. There isn't another combination of time, place and book that I can recall other than maybe assigned readings in high school and college. submitted by /u/fm2606 [link] [comments]
