  • How much research do you do on books before you decide to read them?
by /u/Ok-Demand-6194 (So many books, so little time) on June 16, 2024 at 8:33 am

Personally, it seems that my interest in a book is mostly based on the context by which it became known to me. I'll find new books from other books, or from Youtube where the video references a book that's related to the subject at hand. But the problem is I'll make assumptions about the book, and read it from a skewed, biased angle, due to ignorance of the larger context from which the book was published. Basically, I struggle to find the balance between knowing enough about a book to be interested in it, mindful of what I'm getting myself into, but without knowing so much that I spoil it for myself. Is a book cover enough for most people? What gets you sold on a new book? submitted by /u/Ok-Demand-6194 [link] [comments]

  • Need advice: how to understand a book without seeing spoilers?
by /u/Original_Training391 (So many books, so little time) on June 16, 2024 at 7:39 am

I started reading again after years, and I’m into classics so I picked up The Great Gatsby. I enjoy the fact that simple phrases are turned into imagery/symbolism but I don’t always understand the meaning behind the symbols/images so sometimes I look them up, and I got spoiled too many times it got me a little upset about this because I enjoy understanding almost every word and phrase the writer wrote and I love imagining the image the author set, but in order to do that I’m getting spoiled because titles keep showing up on Google i.e. “x’s death”, “x doesnt end up with y”, “symbol behind x not ending up with y”, or sometimes even in the explanation there’s a spoiler. So how do you understand a book without getting spoilers? submitted by /u/Original_Training391 [link] [comments]

  • Iranian Delegation's Arrival in Sudan, Implications for Civilian Safety and Regional Dynamics
by /u/Vroges (Africa) on June 16, 2024 at 6:53 am

A troubling development in Sudan where a source leak the arrival recently in Sudan of an Iranian technical delegation has caused alarm and deliberations when the General Intelligence Service together with Sudanese army met them. In Arousa, where the Iranians are to teach them how to operate drones from Iran, devices for jamming communication signals as well as technology for hacking; there’s growing fear among civilians that such military advancements could potentially be turned against them. This move underscores Iran’s expanding role in Sudan’s civil war, hinting at a broader internationalization of the conflict. By bolstering support, Iran aims to solidify its alliances and extend influence into the strategic Red Sea region. Since ancient times, Sudan has been utilized as a transit point for the transfer of weapons from Iran destined for Gaza which in effect has had an impact on most parts of Middle East. Although it poses major human rights concerns, one is that General El Burhan revigors the alliance in character of hunting and resources for recognition. This partnership could unleash even more civil oppression or other forms of potential abuse so the world should be watching closely over it. Can you give your views on the entry of Iran into the Sudanese political scene as well as how it affects regional stability and the safety of civilians? submitted by /u/Vroges [link] [comments]

  • How many people judge new authors/books they are thinking of reading in part by the ratio of dialogue to descriptive passages?
by /u/GullibleAntelope (So many books, so little time) on June 16, 2024 at 5:33 am

Flipping through a new book/author for initial impression. My favorite topics are history and also historical fiction and detective series like Michael Connelly/Harry Bosch. I prefer a ratio of about 50-50 at minimum. Only 25% dialogue is fine for fiction. (History is obviously primarily descriptive.) Some highly regarded fiction authors write 80%-plus dialogue. Certainly their works cannot be faulted, but there is something about greater balance between dialog and description that seems to elevate most writing. • (Norwegian Wood) What does Reiko symbolize?
by /u/Serious_Guide_2424 (So many books, so little time) on June 16, 2024 at 5:03 am

My interpretation of NW by Murakami is that it's about the choices that a young person has to make in their life. The characters around the protagonist symbolize each one of these choices. More specifically, Naoko is about being stuck to the past and not being able to move on. Midori is about letting go and moving on from your past. The playboy character, I think was about living life without being tied to moral obligations and conventional social norms. The nerdy roommate was the opposite: he was someone very stuck on following the rules. However, I am not sure what to make of Reiko's character. I am sure she's meant to symbolize something but I can't make out what. Maybe she symbolized throwing your life away? submitted by /u/Serious_Guide_2424 [link] [comments]

  • The Martian, by Andy Weir; did you like it?
by /u/jcoffin1981 (So many books, so little time) on June 15, 2024 at 11:51 pm

I just finished this book. It was entertaining, but I was not blown away. It has been translated into dozens of languages and has won awards. The plot is pretty incredible. I won't list any spoilers, but an astronaut is left behind on Mars and has to survive and hope for rescue. I really like Michael Crichton fiction, but I don't think this book is up to the same level. It does back up a lot of Watney's feats with the science of how it is accomplished, similar to Crichton, but It lacks character development and the prose is not all that engaging. I realize that it's not THAT kind of book. I recently re-read Jurassic Park and it took just 4 days or so, but it took almost a month to read this. This is one of those instances where I liked the book better than the movie. submitted by /u/jcoffin1981 [link] [comments]

  • Finished Reading His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman and it made me cry
by /u/Jokie11223 (So many books, so little time) on June 15, 2024 at 11:49 pm

I have a hard time imagining things visually when reading, but this series seriously brought to life everything. There were difficult times, but I swear, the emotions I was experiencing reading through Lyra's journey is seriously incredible. A girl simply trying to discover herself and understand the world around her. And the way Pullman writes his characters and the relationships they hold for one another. GOD it's so beautiful! I literally cried reading the last few pages of The Amber Spyglass. I feel this is one of those book series where no matter how old one is, it is a MUST read. I wish I had read this when I was younger, but I'm glad to have read it now, especially nearing the end of my college journey. Overall, brilliant work! Book hangover is real lol submitted by /u/Jokie11223 [link] [comments]

  • The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa: Why is this book universally loved?
by /u/condensedmilkontoast (So many books, so little time) on June 15, 2024 at 10:39 pm

I can't for the life of me understand the wide acclaim for this book. It was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize in 2020. I've seen it described as "a masterpiece" and "a masterclass in dystopian literature." How are its many issues overlooked? Issue 1: bad writing. The writing gave me the impression of someone writing their first story. It's simplistic, and not in an artistic way. It's void of subtlety or tension. It takes "show don't tell" too far in the other direction. It over-explains, it repeats time-worn metaphors, and it's filled with clichés - one chapter literally ends with a knock on the door, and the proceeding chapter follows that up with the protagonist whispering "The Memory Police" (gasp) as if that wasn't clear. Issue 2: bad story. It's a great idea: an authoritarian police force is removing items seemingly at random from an island society. But what most dystopian novels have that this one lacks is a clear purpose. How did society come to be this way? What was the intention? How is the regime being maintained? The Memory Police leaves all of these questions unanswered. Perhaps this book wasn't looking to be a societal critique. Fine, but if that's the case then we shouldn't liken it to 1984 (I'm looking at you, Time Magazine). I enjoy a good plot-light novel (keyword: good). My issue was not the lack of plot but the lack of direction. There was no satisfying resolution, no suggestion of what's to come or, more importantly, why. Just a continuation of what has been occuring throughout the novel with no resisting force, no opposing dynamic, no anything. And it throws in an unnecessary, heavily contrived romance. Issue 3: inconsistencies. I'm bewildered as to how this novel presumably made it through multiple rounds of editing. There are writing inconsistencies, eg referring to a character as "the hatmaker" and "the ex-hatmaker" interchangeably; haphazardly switching between "disappeared" and "been disappeared" to describe the island's occurrences. Then there are plot inconsistencies: fruits disappear but the narrator continues to reference apples. Some items disappear out of thin air like magic, while others require the members of society to gather them up - I love magical realism, but not when it is applied opportunely to fill plot holes. All in all, I'm perplexed by the praise this book received. Would love to hear why you did or didn't enjoy this. submitted by /u/condensedmilkontoast [link] [comments]

  • Reading “Shatter me” cuz I’m curious about Aaron Warner
by /u/whitemoon814 (So many books, so little time) on June 15, 2024 at 5:20 pm

Okay, I've been seeing the “Aaron Warner” name literally everywhere. Especially in Reels. My last straw was the Reel about who is the perfect cast for “Aaron Warner”, that’s got me curious about him. I googled his name and I found his character in the “Shatter Me” series. Lucky me, I found “shatter me”, “unravel me”, “ignite me” and “unity me”. Sister’s books. Before Reading, I literally had no idea who “Aaron Warner” is but I’m assuming he’s ML. Mid-reading, so far, is he a villain? Like I really like his character as a villain. He’s really good but I really don’t want Juliette to end up with him. I like her relationship with Adam. But I feel like I’m missing something in the story. Done reading, I like the first & last part of the novel, it’s enjoyable but didn’t enjoy the middle part. I liked Aaron, he’s psycho but my opinion stands about his relationship with Juliette. Honestly, I feel she’s got together with Adam too early, I know something gonna happen to them, neither he will die or they gonna have to fight and fall out of love. And I have this feeling that Aaron will end up with her, seeing how popular he is, I bet something gonna happen. honestly, that doesn’t encourage me to continue the series unless there is a twist in the story. I still don’t get the hype for this series and I'm kinda not interested in continuing. So I’m wondering if this is worth continuing. I don’t mind tiny spoilers as long as it doesn’t ruin the plot for me. Please convince me if I should continue it or not. submitted by /u/whitemoon814 [link] [comments]

  • One of the worst LGBT books.
by /u/mystery5009 (So many books, so little time) on June 15, 2024 at 2:21 pm

Okay, as I understand it, people here like to hear about bad books from Russia, because no one needs my review of Morpho. So here you go. This book was written before the LGBT ban in Russia and it's called "Rise in 40 days" and damn how terrible it was. If anything, it was one of the first books I read, and even then I didn't like this book. And I'll tell you why now. Let's start with the plot. Daan, the main character commits suicide after a quarrel with his mother and becomes a ghost, but he can resurrect if he saves his soulmate, who is the only one who sees him. And he has it for the whole 40 days, otherwise he will disappear. This story had potential, but it was very well drained down the toilet. To begin with, this story is about poor gays who are not accepted by society, all the characters treat this negatively, even the main characters who are homosexuals. Oh yes, I forgot to say that the book takes place in the Netherlands... the country that was the first to accept LGBT people. I also want to point out the idiotic version of ghosts. So that you understand, they need to eat and sleep like ordinary people and there is no point in this. And the plot is wildly boring, most of the time there is drama from scratch, and there are no other emotions except anger and sadness here. It also feels like you're being made to cry (that is, instead of building a sad scene well, the author pressed for pity), and it didn't work out, because the characters turned out to be bad. There are also many types of anime moments from sad anime. It's funny to look at. Both main characters are boring and annoying. Daan is an empty character. He has only two traits: He is gay and a whiner. That's all. Alexis is just a top-form asshole. There was a scene where his sister finds a diary with where he admits his orientation and during an argument he says: "Do you think all gays are monsters?!", but after a couple of pages he laughs hysterically at how the scum mock the teacher, and then tells Daan that he would do worse to her, he robs people, knowing that his father has a weak heart, he does stupid things, and when one of the girls At his school, she just said: "Are you gay?" he punched her in the face (for the record, the author is a woman). The rest are very boring, except for the bullies and the policeman. They are so evil to the point of caricature that you want to laugh. The text is bad. Most of it is Daan's thoughts, which are similar to those quotes you see on social media. And some of them are stupid, for example, that a gay family will be more prosperous than a straight family. Looking at Alexis, I don't think so, especially since it depends on what kind of person he is, and not what orientation he is. And then the thought was repeated that everyone is waiting for the same end, through the page. The descriptions are bad. The hero describes how cozy it is in an old hut, but according to the description, a maniac's lair is being built, the hero says that he has stopped being a squishy and just describes his appearance, not his character. He does not see the girl because of poor eyesight, but clearly sees how she climbed over the railing. And so it is everywhere. As a result, this is a very bad book related to LGBT people. And the worst thing is that it has a very pretty cover and that's why people used to buy it. submitted by /u/mystery5009 [link] [comments]
