- Why Do African Immigrants Choose Europe Instead Of Other African Countries?by /u/Glum_Scarcity5188 (Africa) on April 26, 2024 at 11:11 pm
I was wondering as an American(Black) Looking to visit some African countries this summer for vacation why a lot of African immigrants(especially west) choose Europe(UK,France ,etc.) instead of some other African countries that may provide a better life than where they were Immigrating from? I understand Africa as a continent is huge and for some Europe is closer, easier or has a planned out route they've heard about. But a trip from the DRC or Nigeria Trying to cross the Sahel seems much more difficult than trying to go from Nigeria or DRC to say Botswana, Tanzania, or Kenya. All three of these countries from what I've read are doing pretty well for themselves as of now or are having a tech boom like Nairobi Kenya being called "Silicon Savannah". These things didn't happen overnight. I'm guessing maybe discrimination of West Africans amongst other African nations or policies could be one but I feel like that's still not enough to justify such a life threatening journey like the One Francis Ngannou took though I'm glad he did. Maybe also the lack of knowledge about other African countries Economies and the state of their neighbors so they assume a large portion of Africa is similar to their home country. Even that reason still doesn't make much sense to me with so many Nigerians especially being either well educated ,hard working and or both. I just feel as though there are some other factors I might be missing, If someone could educate me I would really appreciate. I'm only looking online and maybe looking at some regions through rose colored glasses (Privileged as well). Government Websites like smart traveler says some places are dangerous but everyone who travels to these places in videos about tech economies and infrastructure growth etc. shows growing economies and growing education and it being safe to walk at night like the countries I mentioned. Even IBM and Google have facilities placed in Kenya in the last decade. Tanzania has a lot of infrastructure growth. Tanzania, Zambia, and a few other countries just rented land to a UAE company ( A company called Blue Carbon). Though Skeptical of the UAE especially a Dubai Based company buying land this should bring a lot of jobs, money and good research. If someone from these regions could give me some personal knowledge of why Europe is still the choice for so many please let me know. Just Curious after doing research for my vacation. submitted by /u/Glum_Scarcity5188 [link] [comments]

- What’s the pettiest reason you decided you were never going to read a certain book?by /u/FantasticAttempt_2_0 (So many books, so little time) on April 26, 2024 at 10:27 am
I’ll go first. There’s a book coming out this month. A debut novel. I don’t know even what it’s about and I have no intention to find out. I went to uni with the author, and I just think he is the worst person in the world. We had the same friend group, but he and I just never got on. So, I am not going anywhere near it. submitted by /u/FantasticAttempt_2_0 [link] [comments]
- Weekly Recommendation Thread: April 26, 2024by /u/AutoModerator (So many books, so little time) on April 26, 2024 at 10:00 am
Welcome to our weekly recommendation thread! A few years ago now the mod team decided to condense the many "suggest some books" threads into one big mega-thread, in order to consolidate the subreddit and diversify the front page a little. Since then, we have removed suggestion threads and directed their posters to this thread instead. This tradition continues, so let's jump right in! The Rules Every comment in reply to this self-post must be a request for suggestions. All suggestions made in this thread must be direct replies to other people's requests. Do not post suggestions in reply to this self-post. All unrelated comments will be deleted in the interest of cleanliness. How to get the best recommendations The most successful recommendation requests include a description of the kind of book being sought. This might be a particular kind of protagonist, setting, plot, atmosphere, theme, or subject matter. You may be looking for something similar to another book (or film, TV show, game, etc), and examples are great! Just be sure to explain what you liked about them too. Other helpful things to think about are genre, length and reading level. All Weekly Recommendation Threads are linked below the header throughout the week to guarantee that this thread remains active day-to-day. For those bursting with books that you are hungry to suggest, we've set the suggested sort to new; you may need to set this manually if your app or settings ignores suggested sort. If this thread has not slaked your desire for tasty book suggestions, we propose that you head on over to the aptly named subreddit /r/suggestmeabook. - Books without a linear storyby /u/_BreadBoy (So many books, so little time) on April 26, 2024 at 8:07 am
What do you think about books that jump around their timeline sporadically? Like jumping from past to present to further in the past back to present. My bias rant I've seen this trend in a few books that I really want to like but it just becomes frustrating to try and keep track of what the sequence of events are. I think the biggest disappointment for me was Borrowed Time by Paul Monette. Well written but constantly going on tangents about tangents over 3 different periods in the last 10 years. Currently reading Never let me go. And it has the same issue for me. I get that it's supposed to represent the vagueness of childhood memory but they start at 30s then they're 9ish then 14 then 6 then 14. And I know it's likley to get worse as she remembers memories from being an older teen. Just stay still for one chapter please. Flashbacks are grand, and two converging stories work well for me. But it's not knowing am I further back than I was 3 chapters ago or what? submitted by /u/_BreadBoy [link] [comments]
