- “Accuracy” of translated booksby /u/noice-smort99 (So many books, so little time) on October 2, 2023 at 6:45 pm
I’m only able to read English but have wondered how often people have read a book in its original language and then read a translated version and noticed that the choice of words/context were translated incorrectly or not as well as they could have been. I read a handful of books by Japanese authors and have had moments often where I feel like the phrasing or dialogue is odd but wasn’t sure if that was due to cultural/language differences. Curious to hear others experiences with this submitted by /u/noice-smort99 [link] [comments]
- Why do people like The Dark Tower series?by /u/iRight34 (So many books, so little time) on October 2, 2023 at 6:29 pm
I’m an avid Stephen King fan. Read pretty much everything he’s written (and don’t get me wrong some of his books are garbage, but his best books are top 10 personal favorites). Which is why I keep trying to get into The Dark Tower but I just can’t. The first book is such a mess to me. I finally finished it after a 4th start and I honestly had a grasp of about 40% of what happened. Had to reread a synopsis and vaguely recalled everything. Flash forward, now I’m halfway thru the second book and I can follow the story way easier but holy cow is it awful. This is, in my opinion, an awful fantasy series. I don’t understand anyone’s love of it. But to each there own, so I’m genuinely curious why anyone enjoys this series? Is there a two book hurdle to get past? Cause I’ve heard it just gets weirder. submitted by /u/iRight34 [link] [comments]
- Hennepin County, Minnesota libraries celebrate Banned Books Weekby /u/Upset-Kaleidoscope45 (So many books, so little time) on October 2, 2023 at 6:23 pm
The Hennepin County (Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA) Library Board posted a special set of video interviews with Board members about intellectual freedom and also posted the Board's commitment to upholding access to books. It's heartening to see a bold stance in favor of access, especially when political groups throughout the country are trying to curb it. Our Commitment Hennepin County Library is committed to upholding access to a broad spectrum of ideas. We affirm (excerpted from the Freedom to Read policy): It is in the public interest for publishers and librarians to make available the widest diversity of views and expressions, including those that are unorthodox, unpopular, or considered dangerous by the majority.. Publishers, librarians, and booksellers do not need to endorse every idea or presentation they make available. It would conflict with the public interest for them to establish their own political, moral, or aesthetic views as a standard for determining what should be published or circulated. It is contrary to the public interest for publishers or librarians to bar access to writings on the basis of the personal history or political affiliations of the author. There is no place in our society for efforts to coerce the taste of others, to confine adults to the reading matter deemed suitable for adolescents, or to inhibit the efforts of writers to achieve artistic expression. It is not in the public interest to force a reader to accept the prejudgment of a label characterizing any expression or its author as subversive or dangerous. It is the responsibility of publishers and librarians, as guardians of the people's freedom to read, to contest encroachments upon that freedom by individuals or groups seeking to impose their own standards or tastes upon the community at large; and by the government whenever it seeks to reduce or deny public access to public information. It is the responsibility of publishers and librarians to give full meaning to the freedom to read by providing books that enrich the quality and diversity of thought and expression. By the exercise of this affirmative responsibility, they can demonstrate that the answer to a "bad" book is a good one, the answer to a "bad" idea is a good one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6k0xcRvsROQ submitted by /u/Upset-Kaleidoscope45 [link] [comments]
- 'Maybe You Should Talk To Someone' by Lori Gottlieb: a therapist reading a therapist on therapyby /u/floatswithgoats (So many books, so little time) on October 2, 2023 at 6:13 pm
I consider reading advice columns my guilty pleasure, and I have several on rotation throughout the week. I was reading The Atlantic's 'Dear Therapist' this week, when below the byline I noticed that the eponymous Therapist, Lori Gottlieb, has published a book: 'Maybe You Should Talk To Someone'. I got it from the library and inhaled it in two sittings on a long return train journey. I am a therapist myself, although in a different modality to Gottlieb, and I was engrossed by her writing about the process of therapy with her clients. I haven't read anything else that captures the nuances of therapy in this way; the constant consideration of how to approach the client, the ethical concerns, the improvisation and adaptation that is continually occurring. Gottlieb's care for her patients and the deep quality of attention she gives to them shines through, and shows the power of what therapy can ideally achieve. I was less engaged by the parallel thread of Gottlieb attending her own therapy with another psychotherapist she names Wendell. Early in the book she is talking in a session with Wendell when he "lightly kicks" her and makes a quip that she was enjoying her pain so much he wanted to add to it. My eyes bulged out of my head reading this and I never quite warmed to Wendell afterwards, although she clearly found their therapy helpful and transformative. I wondered if perhaps being in the role of the patient led Gottlieb to be less insightful about this experience than in her role as therapist, or if it was simply my personal preference. Has anyone else enjoyed or had a particular reaction to this book? Did you feel it accurately depicted therapy in your experience? submitted by /u/floatswithgoats [link] [comments]
- Sidney Sheldon's 'Master of the game' - So bad it's goodby /u/Puk-_-man (So many books, so little time) on October 2, 2023 at 5:57 pm
Trigger warning: Rape, Suicide, (Male author writing women?) Back in 8th or 9th grade (2008-2009), a lot of my friends were reading Sidney Sheldon and praising his works. I myself was engrossed in Harry Potter and didnot find the time. Last Friday, I saw Master of the Game on the shelf of my local bookstore. I bought it, thinking it was time I saw what the fuss was about. I specifically remember my friends taking about this particular book. I was not ready. The plot: Master of the game follows the lives of the McGregor - Blackwell family across 4 generations. The story begins with Jamie McGregor, a fortune seeking Scotsman that heads to Africa during a diamond rush. Jamie is betrayed by a businessman, cheated out of a fortune and left to die. He survives, gets his revenge and builds a giant Conglomerate. In the second portion of the story, Jamie is succeeded by his daughter, Kate, who marries one of her father's most trusted men and gains the surname Blackwell. At this point Kate becomes the central character of the story. She takes the company to new heights and wants her son to take over the business. In the third part, Kate's son Tony attempts and fails to become an artist. He struggles with his mother's controlling nature and constantly falls for her manipulation. Tony has twin daughters, who make up the final arc of the story. The good: I have to give credit where it's due, the pacing of the book is flawless. It is a page turner. The author has a clear talent for managing how much time and for how long a character appears. Before a new character is introduced, we get just enough information to know what's going on. Characters never overstay their welcome. The language is simple and efficient. There's little to no fluff. The story jumps across different times but does it smoothly. The bad: Oh god, where do I begin. I have to bust out a numerical list for this. One dimensional characters: It takes a special amount of talent to have so many prominent characters star in an almost 500 page book and make all of them dull, lifeless and one dimensional. The good characters are unbearingly, mind numbingly good. They contribute nothing, they exist purely so that the evil characters can drive the story forwards. The evil characters are cartoonishly evil. There are two 'major' villians in the book. The first one is a scumbag businessman with an incestous attachment towards his daughter. He also rapes an 11 year old African girl, impregnates her and then kills her. As only evil men would do, he then takes the girl's brother into his wing and makes his operate his business. The second is a psychopathic, serial killer/ rapist with a fetish for extreme sexual violence. You know where I'm going with this.... the characters are so exagerrated they make you roll your eyes. Deus Ex Machinas: Among the four story arcs, the first is entirely solved with Deus Ex Machina scenarios. The ambitious Jamie McGregor just randomly finds a diamond pit where thousands of others fail. He miraculously survives a murder attempt. When he's about to die in a diamond heist, he miraculously evades capture and escapes with a fortune. Once is acceptable, when it happens multiple times you have to wonder whether the author is actually interested in his book. Plot-twists: There are supposed to be multiple plot twists in the book. I say supposed to because you see atleast 90% of them coming. The book wants to create an 'aha' moment, only you will guess what's coming long before it arrives. It's a clear problem for a book that poses as a bit of a thriller. Wasted potential: The book touches on the issues of racial segregation, colonization and oppression of the African people. This is really strange because these issues are simply touched upon, provided very little context of and then discarded. One of the most interesting characters of the book; Banda is related to this plotline. We get to see far too little of him. The treatment of women: Oh god, some of the stuff here made me wanna puke. One of Kate's grandaughter named Eve is a pyschopath, who from a very early age tries to kill her twin sister. When Kate learns that her grandaughter is sexually promiscious and manipulative, she disowns her. During her quest to earn back her birthright, Eve is brutally raped by a man she meets at a party. Then, it's as if the rape never happens. Eve immediately decides that her rapist can be manipulated to help her own cause. She begins sleeping with him again, and the author takes great pleasure in mentioning that Eve felt a great sexual thrill in being with him. Why? Because Eve is evil, and in the author's mind, the first two adjectives he uses to define a character is all there exists about them. Eve's rapist is a sexual deviant. He sleeps with young men and women, prostitutes, anyone really and he always beats them up, mutiliates them and leaves them be. Eve, because she's evil decides that her rapist should marry her twin sister, inherit her wealth, kill her sister and then share the wealth with her. The marriage goes through. At some point in the marriage, when Eve's plan is coming to place, her rapist/brother-in-law rapes her again, brutally beats her up, fractures her jaw, singes her body and genitals with cigarettes. What does Eve do? She decides, minutes after this violent episode,, while she's immobile in her own bed, that the police should not get involved because her plan is almost complete. She goes to a plastic surgeon, miraculously makes a full recovery. Once again, her horrific rape simply flies out the window. There is no monologue, no thought process, no recovery. She just gets over it, because she's evil and desperate for her plan to go through. She then instructs her rapist to 'do whatever you want' with her sister and kill her. Yes, really. So as the story comes to a close, Eve is coerced by the surgeon who fixed her disfigured face and body into marriage. Eve does, then she starts sleeping around with other men. As another fuck you from the author, her surgeon husband then horribly disfigures her face during a routine procedure to keep her trapped with him. Because the author seemingly hates women, as a final fuck you, he mentions that Eve is a slave to her husband now, because she is ugly and fearful that she willnot find another man again. When Eve's grandmother learns about her grandaughter's brutal rape, she has no reaction, really. The intent of the author isn't lost here. Conclusion: When I asked my dad if he'd ever read Sidney Sheldon, he told me he wrote cheap fiction. I was a bit young to understand it then, in 8th grade. But having read it, I totally get it now. Would I recommend this book to someone? Yes. Because it's so bad its good. submitted by /u/Puk-_-man [link] [comments]
- The Valedictorian of Being Dead - Heather B. Armstrongby /u/prickleofhoglets (So many books, so little time) on October 2, 2023 at 5:56 pm
This is a book that I read when it came out in 2019. It's about a woman(the author) who suffered from severe depression. She underwent a series of experimental treatments where she was put under so her brain activity would be extremely low and then brought back in an attempt to restart her brain. By her last treatment she felt like a different person and like she could enjoy life. I was reorganizing by bookshelf the other day and I came across this book again. Out of curiosity I looked her up and it turns out she died about 4 months ago from alleged suicide. I thought others who have read this book might be interested to know or those who haven't might become interested to read it. submitted by /u/prickleofhoglets [link] [comments]
- A Deadly Education by Naomi Novikby /u/esotericbatinthevine (So many books, so little time) on October 2, 2023 at 5:37 pm
I almost DNF’ed this book many times. I stared it after so many people raved on numerous threads about it being a strong FMC that not only didn’t need a man but got annoyed by one constantly trying to help her. After reading it, that really isn’t an accurate synopsis, she did need him but not in a direct way. Okay so up until about half way through the book I was really fed up with the MC’s poor me attitude and her general attitude. I kept reminding myself she’s 16 or 17 so expecting maturity isn’t fair. She starts learning enough by that point that her attitude starts to change. Growth, I like seeing growth, took a while to get to it but I’m glad I stuck it out. Now I’m 80% finished and the book is amazing. It has so many incredible perspectives in it. It shows how even those born with privilege who want to help and do right by those without it, have so many blind spots even when they do try to be better. It shows how those with privilege who want to help others are still scared like everyone else but in tough times they can fall back on that privilege while those without it can’t and must keep fighting because it is their life. How people, privilege or no, will accept horrible behavior to protect themselves, and while it’s literal life on the line in the book, it is easy to translate that into social standing, the power of networks, etc. of our would. The us vs them issue. Etc. etc. It felt like it took half the book to really get good, but it does. I guess I’m writing this because I came here after getting about 10% into the book because I so strongly wanted to DNF it. The posts were strongly love it or hate it and I was torn. Now, I’m glad I didn’t, although I couldn’t tell you why I kept going. If you’re like me and starting the book and not sure if you want to continue due to the MC, well, it gets better, but you have to stick it out quite a while. Anyone else feel similarly about the book? Or want to discuss the social parallels? Do you have any books that fit the pattern of, "wow I want to DNF this," that turn into something wonderful? Maybe that felt like a slog for longer than most would want to wait it out. submitted by /u/esotericbatinthevine [link] [comments]
- Quirky but Super Funny Mysteryby /u/fatbikenewb (So many books, so little time) on October 2, 2023 at 3:22 pm
Some reason, my first post of this (and on reddit) was taken down? So reposting modified as I'd like to share my thoughts on books. I'm a super avid reader, by the age of 13 I had read nearly every book in the local library Lurker since 2016, I've never posted anything to reddit before LOL but this book was so unbelievably funny I have to share it. Also for personal reasons too. (my gf died of brain cancer) I got an email recommending this book. The author wrote the book while he was recovering from cancer so this got me in the feels cause my gf passed. Insanely funny, starts out really really quirky and keeps going with so many plot twists. Detective type mystery with many interesting characters. I literally could not stop reading it- about 3 hours later I was wanting a sequel. It's pretty uniquely written. It's got lots of interesting characters- FBI agents, local detective, crazy town characters, even a pair of standard poodles that play a big part. Fascinating descriptions of small town florida as well. The closest I can see feeling wise is the fantasy sci fi series "Myth Inc Link" by Robert Aspirin or maybe Douglas Adamsish It's called "The Raven Conspiracy" by Michael F Spratt, has anyone else read this? hopefully this does not get taken down, I took out any mention of any other sitesif it gets taken down again, maybe the mods can tell me why submitted by /u/fatbikenewb [link] [comments]
- My thoughts on the First Law series by Joe Abercrombie (spoilers for all 10 books)by /u/EnigmaForce (So many books, so little time) on October 2, 2023 at 3:11 pm
I spent a good portion of this year listening to and reading The First Law series. Overall, I really enjoyed the series. It has some flaws and might be a tad overhyped on Reddit, but it is a fun ride and I recommend it wholeheartedly. Characters There were so many memorable characters: Nicomo Cosca, Sand dan Glokta, Logen Ninefingers, Rikke, Savine dan Glokta/Brock, Jonas Clover, Caul Shivers, Monza Murcatto, Orso dan Luthar, and so many others. There wasn't a single character for whom I disliked reading POV chapters. That's really impressive. Orso dan Luthar is the one I was most surprised to like. His worst crime was being...what, an immature Crown Prince? He was a good man and accepted his treatment under Judge and then Leo. He was merciful (to his eventual demise). He didn't whine or hold grudges at the end. Of all the death and chaos and carnage, his hanging at the end was the saddest part for me. On the other side of the coin: Fuck. Leo. Dan. Brock. What a whiny, immature baby. He was likable in A Little Hatred. I enjoyed the "moral, but naive with flawed character traits" way he was written. But then he just becomes such a little brat. Boo hoo, you fucked around and found out and became a cripple. Doesn't mean you should become a fascist turd. [He was well written, just so easily despised.] Writing The writing of the characters and dialogue really overshadows everything else for me. It was hilarious and engaging. That being said, some things became a little tiresome. Yoru Sulfur has different colored eyes. Tallow reminded Vic of her brother. Bayaz's bald pate. Anyone with missing/gapped teeth always had to lick, suck, or stick their tongue in the gap. Everyone looks at everyone sideway and everyone has to puff their cheeks out. Plot I think the books improved quite a bit as they went on. First Law was the weakest set, and 1 and 3 were the weakest books overall IMO. I saw things like Jezal becoming king from a mile away. Still good, but rough. The standalone books were my favorite. Monza, Nicomo, Shy, Shev and Javre; so many good characters. And the standalone genre styles worked fantastically. Age of Madness was awesome. I loved incorporating industrialization, revolution, and the perils of unfettered capitalism. I loved how the series progressed over....maybe 30-50 years? Seeing characters age, have children, those children grow up. Watching as characters grew and matured and maybe didn't redeem themselves, but became more understandable. It was gradual and earned. (I know there some time jumps, but for the number of books and number of years that pass, it still felt gradual.) Having characters briefly mentioned or shown early on before having a huge role later on was great as well, like Vic and Rews/Pike. There were also plans and developments that bore lots of fruit later on, especially technology-wise. Finally: I liked that you had 5 complete "stories" (2 trilogies, 3 standalone books, 1 short story collection) and a lot of places you could quit reading without feeling like you'd miss something. I wasn't sure if i wanted to tackle a 10-book series this year, but the multiple "off ramps" made it feel more manageable. TL;DR - great series. Not perfect, but well worth your time! I wanted to get some thoughts out there for a couple reasons: 1) it feels like most people only discuss the first 3 books, and those are definitely the worst IMO, and 2) the series is fresh in my mind and I just want to remember some of the stuff from it! submitted by /u/EnigmaForce [link] [comments]

So far I have read three of his books. If on A Winters Night a Traveler, Invisible Cities, and Complete Cosmicomics and I have bought more as well. I heard nothing about this writer, I just saw his books and thought the covers looked cool so I picked them up. I first read If on A Winters Night a Traveler and I was a little taken aback at first, not really getting it and concerned that the writer was trying a little too hard at something. Then I kept reading and I was like. "Okay, I get it now." and I really enjoyed it. Of the three I read, I think Invisible Cities might be my favorite. Cosmicomics reminds me of something Mark Twain would have written and I really enjoyed those stories too. I could tell from the first book I read that he's more of a short story writer than a novelist and he has a way of weaving his stories in his own way that I'm learning to enjoy. If any one else has read his books I'd love to know what you think. submitted by /u/NotBorris [link] [comments]
- Do you protect your books with plastic covers?by /u/artodyto (So many books, so little time) on October 2, 2023 at 12:43 pm
I'm curious if people put plastic covers or any kind of protection on their books. Personally, I don't and I like the look of a book that has been used. However my girlfriend thinks differently and is very careful on her books, making sure to put plastic coverings before reading/using them and doesn't allow even a small crease on the book's spine. - Worst experience with a book you've read/audiobooked?by /u/reddit809 (So many books, so little time) on October 2, 2023 at 11:18 am
I'm going through John Adams by David McCullough. The book itself is great. A wealth of interesting facts about a truly great man, if not tedious due to so much detail about very irrelevant info (my God man who cares about that painting so kuch that you had to ramble about it for 3 minutes?), but it's the audio itself I find unbearable. The reader desperately needs a glass of water to the point that it sounds disgusting. The deep breaths are really off putting as well. It wouldn't bother me if it was once or twice, but it's all the way through. submitted by /u/reddit809 [link] [comments]
