- A Classic and a Masterpiece that I had never heard of before: Pedro Paramo by Juan Rulfoby /u/DashiellHammett (So many books, so little time) on April 27, 2024 at 1:49 am
When I travel, I always take with me 2-3 books by authors from where I'm traveling to, or classics set there. I've been to Mexico several times and, thus, I'd already read quite a few books that qualified, e.g., The Good Gringo, The Power and the Glory, and Under the Volcano (hated the latter). So on this trip, I needed to dig a bit deeper, and I searched for classic novels high school students in Mexico are assigned to read. And I discovered Pedro Paramo by Juan Rulfo. I also discovered that it was the book Gabriel Garcia Marquez read and was deeply inspired by before reading 100 Years of Solitude. Pedro Paramo is AMAZING. It's more a novella. I literally read it twice, finishing, then reading it again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! submitted by /u/DashiellHammett [link] [comments]

- Anybody else tired of the Game of Thrones title formula?by /u/rubellious (So many books, so little time) on April 27, 2024 at 12:09 am
This is most prevalent with fantasy/YA works but it seems like there's a million books out that copy the same formula as the Game of Thrones books for their titles, which is either: A ___ of ___ or A ___ of ___ and ___ It seems like authors just insert random words into the blanks and call it a day. It's totally irrational but this really bugs me, I guess because of how lazy it seems? Sarah J. Maas in particular seems to title all of her books this way. Anybody else feel annoyed by this or am I totally on my own? submitted by /u/rubellious [link] [comments]
- The Housemaid by Freida McFadden is a terrific palate refresher.by /u/TylertheDouche (So many books, so little time) on April 26, 2024 at 11:44 pm
I just finished The Housemaid. It only took me a few days. My last few books have been The Sailor Who Fell from Grace With the Sea, Blood Meridian, and No Country For Old Men - so I was shocked at how much I enjoyed The Housemaid and how quickly I devoured it. Is it destined to be a formulaic Netflix series? Absolutely. Does it have the prose of Cormac McCarthy? No Is the plot highly unlikely? Yes. I still enjoyed it… a lot. It was just fun. it has a big Gone Girl feel. Weirdly enough, it made me feel confident in my reading skills, especially since my past 3 books. I see people complaining that this book’s plot isn’t air-tight or certain characters act too unrealistic… and while that may be true, this book is a juicy drama. Don’t read it expecting a true crime novel. If you’re someone who fell out of love with reading or have been challenging yourself too much… try The Housemaid. It’s like dropping the difficulty down on a hard boss and still having a great time beating him. submitted by /u/TylertheDouche [link] [comments]

- Why Do African Immigrants Choose Europe Instead Of Other African Countries?by /u/Glum_Scarcity5188 (Africa) on April 26, 2024 at 11:11 pm
I was wondering as an American(Black) Looking to visit some African countries this summer for vacation why a lot of African immigrants(especially west) choose Europe(UK,France ,etc.) instead of some other African countries that may provide a better life than where they were Immigrating from? I understand Africa as a continent is huge and for some Europe is closer, easier or has a planned out route they've heard about. But a trip from the DRC or Nigeria Trying to cross the Sahel seems much more difficult than trying to go from Nigeria or DRC to say Botswana, Tanzania, or Kenya. All three of these countries from what I've read are doing pretty well for themselves as of now or are having a tech boom like Nairobi Kenya being called "Silicon Savannah". These things didn't happen overnight. I'm guessing maybe discrimination of West Africans amongst other African nations or policies could be one but I feel like that's still not enough to justify such a life threatening journey like the One Francis Ngannou took though I'm glad he did. Maybe also the lack of knowledge about other African countries Economies and the state of their neighbors so they assume a large portion of Africa is similar to their home country. Even that reason still doesn't make much sense to me with so many Nigerians especially being either well educated ,hard working and or both. I just feel as though there are some other factors I might be missing, If someone could educate me I would really appreciate. I'm only looking online and maybe looking at some regions through rose colored glasses (Privileged as well). Government Websites like smart traveler says some places are dangerous but everyone who travels to these places in videos about tech economies and infrastructure growth etc. shows growing economies and growing education and it being safe to walk at night like the countries I mentioned. Even IBM and Google have facilities placed in Kenya in the last decade. Tanzania has a lot of infrastructure growth. Tanzania, Zambia, and a few other countries just rented land to a UAE company ( A company called Blue Carbon). Though Skeptical of the UAE especially a Dubai Based company buying land this should bring a lot of jobs, money and good research. If someone from these regions could give me some personal knowledge of why Europe is still the choice for so many please let me know. Just Curious after doing research for my vacation. submitted by /u/Glum_Scarcity5188 [link] [comments]

- The Nail by Jane Adamsby /u/inabookhole (So many books, so little time) on April 26, 2024 at 8:26 pm
I've always been a reader who's fascinated by thriller novels, so I'm constantly on the lookout for books of this genre that can keep me glued to the pages with a crescendo of suspense and tension. A few days ago, I started reading "The Nail" by Jane Adams, the latest novel in a series that came out yesterday. I had already heard about the previous books and had caught up on the previous one, so when I had the chance to read this latest one, I didn't let it slip away. Undoubtedly, it's a fascinating and detailed novel that plays a lot with timelines and is written by an author who loves to tangle the web of connections and details. In this novel, the action involves new characters along with others that the reader should already have known from the previous book; the protagonists' stories intertwine almost casually, throwing the reader into a whirlwind of crucial details that are necessary to unravel the tangle and reach a linear and perfectly sensible solution. I appreciated the implicit attention demanded of the reader because, much like in the series "How to Get Away with Murder," every tiny detail, every discovery, every seemingly insignificant clue, is ultimately necessary to conclude. For its style and ability to keep you glued to the pages, this is one of the best thrillers I've had the opportunity to read lately. submitted by /u/inabookhole [link] [comments]

- What is the key to Terry Pratchett’s vocabulary?by /u/RandomDigitalSponge (So many books, so little time) on April 26, 2024 at 6:05 pm
I’ve read a lot of Discworld novels, and like a good popular writer who is a master of prose , his vocabulary is vast and efficient. I think of Raymond Chandler who could balance hard-boiled fiction with the care of a well-versed antiques dealer slipping on a knuckle-duster from the watch pocket of a double-breasted suit. Except Pratchett doesn’t ever come across as fancy for even a minute with a brief aside. He uses humor. Pratchett makes me want to look up words every few minutes, and yet, I know I don’t have to. You can easily fall in love with the Discworld without bothering to look up the fifty or hundred words you didn’t quite understand. Perhaps it’s because these words are referential? He uses “pretty” to mean pretty and that’s good enough for him. But he will explain that the garden grew gentian and lupine and mot just “flowers”, that this device lost a flywheel, not a “gear”. And again, he isn’t trying to be fancy. He isn’t ever “technical”. It all just seems so natural. I’m reading a Crichton pirate novel right now, and Crichton was famously technical with jargon, but I’m surprised at how much simpler his prose is compared to Pratchett’s, too simple even. Patrick O’Brien on the other hand is far more “technical” with historic and nautical jargon and that makes it a slower read if you want to appreciate the work that went into it. O’Brien tends to be enjoyed must by people who call themselves “buffs”. Pratchett on the other hand just dips into the natural descriptions and references for humor, and that puts him in the sweet spot - a larger vocabulary than most, but it rarely feels that way. You don’t need to be an insider or connoisseur. You don’t even need to particularly like the genre he’s writing in (high fantasy albeit with a comedic bent). What do you think? What’s the key to accomplishing this in your opinion? submitted by /u/RandomDigitalSponge [link] [comments]
- Ningen Shikaku / No Longer Human by Osamu Dazaiby /u/shinyagamik (So many books, so little time) on April 26, 2024 at 5:44 pm
I wanted to read this book for many years. As a depressed teen, I read many dark and depressing manga which referenced Dazai, with short and (to me) enticing blurbs, excerpts, or descriptions like: "a man terrified of people", or "overcome by despair, he attempted a joint suicide". Essentially, descriptions that portrayed him as the melancholic struggling artist or as someone relatable to me as a depressed person. I particularly felt this way as I was generally considered weird for sharing abstract concepts, or for describing the world from a more artistic POV. The start of the book spoke to me. Dazai spoke of people's duplicity and how horrifying it was. How they could stab people in the backs, talk badly about them, and turn back to the same person with a smile and praise? How his genuine desire for a specific gift was ignored in favour of what others deemed "correct" for him. I finally felt so seen and vindicated. It was like going "YES, YES, YES" as I read - "finally someone gets it! finally someone understands me!" I had been struggling in the duplicity of the corporate environment at this point in my life, and when trying to discuss my difficulties with fakeness with older family members in my life, despite their best intentions, I felt gaslighted when they couldn't understand me. And then this guy turned around and became the worst snake of all time. Now, it would be one thing if he was using this behaviour against those who had exhibited it first. But no. Instead he used it to exploit innocent woman and even their children. He inserted himself into their lives and drained them dry. He was openly addicted around the child and argued around the child, creating a deeply unhappy home environment. And then after bleeding the cash dry and fucking up their lives, he just up and left. And the whole time he does this he's still complaining about how hard his life is! He keeps ranting on about fake people and users when there's none worse than himself. He even has the gall to talk about keeping a mask on around these women and being afraid of them, of their opinion of him. His wife even gets raped, he watches and does nothing to stop it, and then it's all just complaining about how "she's changed" and how "bad" he feels - while as usual doing nothing to better her life. Granted, I haven't read many adult fiction books yet. But this is the most unlikeable, downright hateable protagonist I have ever met. Maybe I'm unrefined, maybe I'm missing something, but to me this book is just the self misery masturbation drivels of a useless misogynist. It's not even worth listening to. It's just another pathetic misogynist deadbeat user who should be forgotten by history. I'm not interested in books that are all about how hard it is for a man as he constantly abuses women. Where's the art in that? I don't understand how this is so popular / has such good reviews / staying power as reference in japanese media. Slightly related, I recently also read Diary of an Oxygen Thief. I never even finished it for the same reasoning, which is I don't care to learn of the poor little protagonist's troubles and aches and how hard it is for him to keep abusing women. submitted by /u/shinyagamik [link] [comments]
