[Homemade] – Food you made. This includes food made from scratch, or food assembled from pre-made ingredients.
[Pro/Chef] – You work in a food-related industry and made it. Chefs, pastry chefs, bakers, butcher, sous chef, and food photographers all fit into this category.
[I ate] – You went to a place and most likely exchanged money to eat this. This tag includes restaurants, food trucks, etc.
Pure Food and Wine:
Everyone knows that food is important. It’s one of the basic necessities of life, after all. But what exactly is “food”? It’s not just the stuff that you buy at the grocery store or order at a restaurant. It’s also the meals that you eat at home, and even the snacks that you enjoy between meals. In short, food is anything that you eat or drink to nourish your body.
But not all food is created equal. Some foods are better for you than others, and some are even downright bad for your health. That’s why it’s important to be choosy about what you eat. And one way to do that is to make sure that you’re eating pure food.
So what exactly is pure food? Simply put, it’s food that has been made without the use of any artificial additives or chemicals. This means that pure food is free from pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones, and other harmful substances. It’s also usually organic, meaning that it was grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers or genetic engineering. In short, pure food is the kind of food that nature intended for us to eat.
If you’re looking for pure food, your best bet is to stick with homemade meals made from fresh, whole ingredients. But if you don’t have time to cook at home, there are plenty of restaurants and eateries that serve pure, healthy cuisine. Just make sure to do your research so that you can be sure you’re getting the real deal. After all, your health is worth it!
8 major food allergens:
Everyone has different dietary needs and restrictions. Some people are vegetarian, some people are kosher, and some people have food allergies. While it is possible to accommodate all of these diets, it can be difficult to keep track of everything. That’s why it’s important to know the top 8 major food allergens. This way, you can be sure that everyone will be able to enjoy your homemade cuisine or go out to eat without worry.
The top 8 major food allergens are: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat. If you or someone you know has a food allergy, it is important to avoid these ingredients. However, that doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on all the fun. There are plenty of delicious recipes that don’t use any of these ingredients. So whether you’re cooking for yourself or for a group, you can rest assured that everyone will be able to enjoy your meal.
These eight items are responsible for the vast majority of serious allergic reactions in the United States. If you have a severe allergy to one of these foods, it’s important to be careful when eating out or consuming homemade meals. Some restaurants are better than others at accommodating allergies, but it’s always best to err on the side of caution. By being aware of the top eight major food allergens, you can help keep yourself safe and healthy.

- What It Takes to Become a Coffee ‘Sommelier’by Samantha Maxwell (Food52) on May 31, 2023 at 8:20 pm
It may be 4 o’clock in the afternoon, but the room is filled with the aromas of freshly brewed coffee. You try to block out the noise of your colleagues slurping brown liquid from spoons dipped over and over again into nondescript white mugs as you struggle to distinguish the variety of flavors and acids in your own cups. You’re nervous, you’re over-caffeinated, and you feel your palate giving out on you. “It's like swimming in a sea of lemon juice—with your mouth open!—which makes it very different to distinguish various acids from each other,” said Kim Westerman, Q grader and founder of Hedonic Terroir-Driven Coffee. She’s talking about the acid test portion of the Q (quality) grader exam, just one of 22 different tests in an exam designed to assess coffee experts’ palates, skills, and knowledge. During the courses that precede the exam, students learn “how to evaluate coffees objectively while utilizing standardized [and] globally recognized methods,” said Eric Schuman, a Q grader who works as the roaster partnerships manager at Fellow, a company that sells high-end coffee gear. Once a candidate passes the exam, they are known as a Q grader, which indicates that they’re a coffee expert versed in ascertaining coffee quality. The Q graders I spoke with agreed that the qualification affords coffee professionals more influence and prestige in the industry and can help establish increased confidence while cupping, or tasting, coffee. But it’s not as simple as understanding the merits of Blue Bottle over Folgers or refusing oat milk in favor of black coffee—the road to becoming a Q grader is a long and arduous one, full of obstacles that few of us coffee proletariat can truly grasp. - Need advice on making oat milkby /u/Silent_Cartoonist_72 (FoodHacks) on May 31, 2023 at 7:11 pm
So as the title says, I want to make oat milk since regular cow's milk always gives me digestion issues. I would go straight for Almond milk but I can't since I have a Tree-Nut Allergy... So my next guess was to make oat milk but I wanted to ask if anyone had advice for me on where I can find quality oats that are Tree-Nut Free or just on making delicious oat milk? If not that then just other great alternatives for Cow's milk. I love the creaminess that milk provides for baked goods and smoothies and don't want to give it up. submitted by /u/Silent_Cartoonist_72 [link] [comments]

- The Case for Pre-Ground Black Pepperby Stephanie Ganz (Food52) on May 31, 2023 at 1:17 pm
For years, my kitchen altar—the little marble tray full of cooking essentials that sits next to my stove—has looked exactly the same. It includes a wooden utensil crock, squeeze bottles of olive and vegetable oil, a butter keeper, a salt cellar, and a large wooden pepper grinder. But recently, I’ve made a noteworthy change, swapping out the pepper grinder for a small bowl of pre-ground pepper. I, like many of you, have long been under the impression that pre-ground black pepper is somehow inferior to freshly ground, but after these past few months of cooking with pre-ground pepper, I have to admit…it might be time to reconsider. After all, why should we be beholden to the cult of “freshly cracked” pep? Is the Big Grinder lobby to blame? Is the phrase “freshly cracked” akin to Lucky Strike’s tagline, “It’s Toasted,” technically true, but signifying nothing? Read More >>

- The Iconic Cookware We Just Can't Stop Collectingby Arati Menon (Food52) on May 31, 2023 at 12:15 pm
If there’s one object in my kitchen that gets more oohs and aahs than anything else in the room, it’s my Dansk Købenstyle butter warmer. A small-scale saucepan in a warm shade of plum, it never leaves my stove except to get washed. Lest you think it serves aesthetic purposes alone, let me underline the fact that I use it every single day—no, multiple times a day. It is quite simply the prettiest little workhorse I’ve owned. Dansk has been a familiar brand to me for a while; before I bought my first piece I'd seen pepper mills and trays in the homes of friends, and fawned over casseroles and silverware in vintage stores. The name Købenstyle, however, was less familiar to me. If you, like me, first heard the word and thought of København, you wouldn’t be remiss—these distinctive pots and pans were designed by Copenhagen-born sculptor and designer Jens Quistgaard. - Chris Roelli’s Cheddar Has the Blues—But That's a *Very* Good Thingby Madison Trapkin (Food52) on May 30, 2023 at 2:27 pm
We've teamed up with Wisconsin Cheese for an interview mini-series called Meet the Cheesemakers, featuring a sampling of the state’s finest makers and their award-winning creations. Each type of cheese has a unique history, some lengthier than others, and many with layers of folklore woven in for good measure. Take, for instance, Camembert, allegedly invented by an 18th-century dairymaid named Marie Harel who was inspired by a French priest making Brie in the height of the French Revolution. Or, consider the more easily traced tale of Gorgonzola, most likely named for the town of Gorgonzola, Italy in which it was first produced around A.D. 879. And then, there's the decidedly straightforward story of cheddar with its first recorded making in Cheddar, England in the 12th century. Eventually, cheddar made its way stateside, and by the mid-19th century it was the most widely produced cheese in the United States. Read More >>

- Can I move opened sauces from fridge to pantry?by /u/royalglass34 (FoodHacks) on May 30, 2023 at 2:12 am
I've been storing all my sauces in the fridge since I didn't have a lot of pantry space. Things like soy sauce, oyster sauce, mirrin, rice wine vinegar, tomato sauce, sweet chilli sauce and lemon and lime juice. Now I have more pantry space, I'd like to move everything out of the fridge to make room but I'm wondering if I should put them back to dry storage after they've already been refrigerated? Or should I wait until they're finished and then start the replacements back in the pantry? submitted by /u/royalglass34 [link] [comments]

Hello, I need help! I’m not sure what subreddit to post this on so let me know please where I should put this! I just did my first farmers market selling dog treats. I baked them, let them cool completey, packaged, then sealed them. Unfortunately during the market, some bags displayed condensation. It looks weird gross and unsellable! I had to get rid of a few from my table. How do you package treats correctly in order to avoid condensation? submitted by /u/Crafty-Government704 [link] [comments]

- Spruce syrupby /u/KibsuNation (FoodHacks) on May 29, 2023 at 10:16 am
So I don't know if this is common knowledge, but I thought I'd share. You can pick the new, pale green growth from spruce trees and make delicious syrup from them. Very earthy, citrusy flavor. Good with game or desserts. I am mostly making it for drinks. I will add an image when it's done, but basically you pick about 5 liters of spruce tips. You add water so they are covered and leave oven night. Then you bring it to a boil (like in picture, they turn creepy moss green when cooked) and cook for 2 hours on low. Drain, add 1/2 kg of sugar for every liter of "spruce stock". Simmer for another 2 hours or until desired consistency. (Mix every once in a while or it will burn.) Put the hot syrup in clean canning jars and close lids. Let cool and store in the fridge or a cellar. submitted by /u/KibsuNation [link] [comments]
