- With there being five big publishing houses and about a billion imprints underneath each of them how can we possibly keep up with all the books being produced?by /u/yolouat (So many books, so little time) on April 19, 2024 at 11:02 pm
As the title says there are five big Publishing houses with a huge amount of imprints underneath each producing so many books that isn't funny. This means a massive majority of these books are going to go unnoticed undiscovered with hardly anyone if at all talking about them on the Internet. Now I would like to discover these books for myself and I'm hoping you guys could help me. Is there any specific websites that happened to have a catalog of sorts with each book and their cover that the polishing house has put out from the moment they started up until now? I mean the other day I came across a website that had exactly what I needed but I can't recall the name and how I found it. Not only that but it only had books from one specific imprint and I don't even no if all the books that I saw listed on there was everything that had ever published or just a select few. submitted by /u/yolouat [link] [comments]
- "The Lathe Of Heaven" by Ursula K. Le Guin.by /u/i-the-muso-1968 (So many books, so little time) on April 19, 2024 at 10:44 pm
Quickly finished up another novel today by the late Ursula K. Le Guin. A short one titled "The Lathe Of Heaven". Set on an Earth that is consumed by war and environmental disaster this is the story of one George Orr who discovers that his own dreams can alter reality. George is terrified of this ability and he seeks help from an ambitious psychiatrist named Dr. William Haber who soon has a complete grasp on George's power. When Haber becomes adept at controlling and manipulating George's dreams, which he uses to reshape the world, he soon begins to seek that power for himself. So now it's up to George, with some really surprising help, must resist Dr. Haber's attempts that are threatening the very fabric of reality itself. This is really one of Le Guin's most hallucinogenic novels that I've read so far. It's so much like what you read in a Philip K. Dick novel (and I love Philip K. Dick!). Of course, as stated in the introduction of my Scribner edition of my copy, both Philip and Le Guin were both admirers of their work and ha corresponded with each other on occasion. The idea of altering reality via dreaming is, as George himself had found it, very terrifying. Can you imagine a person having that kind of power and using it to change every aspect of world, only to destroy reality itself? I certainly can't! Certainly not, even if it was with the best of intentions. Still this is a great read, regardless of its short length. submitted by /u/i-the-muso-1968 [link] [comments]

- I don't like Aslan.by /u/QueenOdonata (So many books, so little time) on April 19, 2024 at 2:23 pm
I'm late but I finally started the Chronicles of Narnia for the first time since I was about 9. The stories themselves are good. I enjoy the world that C.S. Lewis built, it's fantastical and nonsensical and fun. I'm currently on "the silver chair" so still working my way through the books. I don't like Aslan. But then again I also don't have any love for the Christian god. When people said he was basically Lion Jesus I thought it was an exaggeration. NOPE. He is omniscient, brings people from the brink of death, dies for the sins of Edmond, comes back to life, TURNS WATER TO WINE (that was such a random throw away I almost said 'oh come on' out loud). Then he flat out tells Lucy and Ed that he is known by another name in their world and they'll find him there. It's so heavy handed any time Asland is brought around it's hard for me not to be dragged out of the story. I actually love books that have religious allegory, symbolism, undertones, you name it. I love His Dark Materials, I believe Weaveworld had a lot of religious references, and in general anything that takes God's and religious stories and makes them into something new and interesting is fun to me. Aslan is not. He's a mouthpiece for religion and he's boring. Edit: few corrections, I only read the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe as a kid. And I was not 9, I was in maybe first grade so closer to 6. As a kid I had no clue about the Jesus imagery in that book and all I remembered was the Fawn, the salt water taffyTurkish delights, and the white witch being a daughter of Lilith. I have done zero research on CS Lewis (not a scholar, not into theology casually, I just wanted to read a series I didn't finish as a kid). I don't hate the series, I just don't like Aslan. Edit 2: thank you to everyone who threw out book recs, I will be updating my backlog with everything on here! submitted by /u/QueenOdonata [link] [comments]
- Do you enjoy reading fight scenes in books?by /u/Stannis_Mariya (So many books, so little time) on April 19, 2024 at 1:01 pm
Not comparing them to the action/fight scenes in movies; rather, I'm just curious as to whether or not people enjoy reading about them. I'm not sure whether I'm alone in this, but I've never found them engaging. Although I enjoy the drama and the exchanges that take place throughout the fight, I didn't feel any suspense or thrills when reading them. submitted by /u/Stannis_Mariya [link] [comments]
