It is a staple at our celebrations, gatherings, and in our daily lives, but the story of how it got here is quite an unusual journey. The origins actually trace back to Indonesia and their traditional hand-drawn batik textiles. During the 19th century, Dutch colonizers in Indonesia wanted to find a way to mass-produce batik using machines, hoping to monopolize the local market. Their industrialized version ended up failing in Indonesia. The automated resin-printing process left small cracks and imperfections in the dye, which the local Indonesian market rejected in favor of their authentic, handmade batik. With a surplus of unwanted fabric, European traders needed a new market. Dutch ships routinely stopped at ports along the West African coast, particularly around the Gold Coast. When they brought these textiles ashore, the reaction was completely different. West African buyers appreciated the bright, vibrant color palettes, and the crackling effect that ruined the fabric for the Indonesian market was seen as a unique, appealing texture. What happened next is a testament to the influence of West African market women, most notably the Nana Benz of Togo and similar traders across the region. These women did not just sell the imported fabric but they took control of the narrative. They communicated directly with European manufacturers, dictating the colors, styles, and motifs that would appeal to local tastes. More importantly, these women gave the fabrics cultural meaning. They assigned names and proverbs to specific patterns. Wearing a certain design became a way to silently communicate messages about wealth, marital status, or even warnings to rivals. A European-made commodity was entirely culturally appropriated by West Africans and woven into the social fabric of our societies. It is a fascinating piece of history that always brings up great debates on whether the fabric can be considered authentically African today, or if it remains a symbol of how our ancestors masterfully claimed a foreign product that was considered not good enough to some. “The house of my mother- a daughter’s quest for freedom” by Shari Franke is an extremely raw and unique experience. Franke was forced to become part of her narcissistic mother’s YouTube channel (8 Passengers) with all of her other siblings. In the book, she describes her perspective from starting the channel to the arrest of her mother. Every single moment of her life, every achievement, every tear was captured by a camera and posted to millions of viewers. With “mommy blogging” there is a conversation that needs to be held. Should a mother be able to exploit her child for money and fame ? Should she be able to post her underage child? Who is allowed to receive the earnings of said channel? Overall there should be regulations to this topic. The book overall is well written and depicts the harm social media and religious psychosis has on a child that simply had no choice. That might be harsh to say but I do wish she wrote the book a bit later. This case is still “fresh” and while reading I can’t help but notice a pattern. The pattern is: the victim isn’t free yet. The inflicts of religious psychosis of her mother seems to still play a part (obviously). The author is still religious and does explain a lot of things that happened through God. My heart goes out to her and I do hope she gets better and finds space to heal and be at peace. The book does not feel “resolved” or finished for that matter. I do see the complete detachment from her mother. Kind of excusing the dad being an enabler also shows the wounds are still fresh. So if you are interested in seeing how mommy blogging can impact a young child, it is worth a read. I simply couldn’t say the end is satisfying. I was hoping for her to reflect on the situation and see how there are many people to blame in this situation. I do understand though, her trauma is extremely complex. My story is very simple, In my teenage years, I crafted a low quality radio antennae without any adult supervision in Western Kenya close to Uganda border. I was able to capture both Uganda and Tanzanian channels which played my favorite urban music. As a bonus, I was introduced to Bongo Rap Music: Great poetical talent back then. All this was before high school, which only taught theoretical physics. I call this experience backward-learning and here's why: Our school systems have for long time been creating unemployment for many youths destroying national growth. I have witnessed disadvantaged kids try fix radios and solved minor engineering problems while sent home for fees to pay for absolutely nothing. This is why I propose a way to solve the unemployment crisis in Africa with the help of both private and government industries. CBC and CBE in Kenya has already been overtaken by inexperienced trainers who are only after the money. Leaders in the Education ministry offer incompetence, talking about how it's hard to sustain disadvantaged schooling systems in remote settings and thus focus on developed schools in established settings establishing more error through marginalization; I was able to make that antennae in a remote setting. What we need is experts in various manufacturing industries, to be awarded Teaching and Training Certificates in collaboration with Primary and secondary level teachers and to create Technical syllabuses. Their work is to integrate tangible engineering into the education system. Expanded Workshops, both in Schools and The Manufacturing Companies is the way to go to stop politicians from building more classrooms to get votes from parents, what we need is hubs and labs the schools already have land. We have already wasted a lot of money serving incompetency but this new path should still be cheaper and more effective in terms of real skill-development. We don't want confusion, we want kids to be able to choose from the grassroot level and develop real career skills instead of graduating and applying for office jobs. My goodness. I haven't read a short story collection in ages and being new to her work, thought I'd give this a go. Completely captivating. I finished it in two days and felt a lot of feelings. Beautifully written stories about love and loss, but what stood out to me was that so many characters made bad choices yet Groff made those decisions feel honest and true to the moment. That, coupled with her ability to create a tangible setting (descriptions of temperature, colors, lighting all flow magnificently), made for a powerful reading experience. A heartbreaker, but an exquisite one. I've seen a lot of criticism of A Little Life online, and, to be honest, what made me read the book was actually a 1 star review on Goodreads that said if a 0 star review was possible, that's what A Little Life would have deserved. A few things I would actually concede are problematic is the lack of meaningful female characters, and the 'I'm not into men, I'm just into Jude' mindset that Willem has. The book is admittedly very male-centric (disappointing from a female author of this calibre), and the Willem mindset echoes a lot of yaoi/manga mindsets, rather than being an authentic depiction of gay love. However, I did find this book to be truly hooking and a wonderful study in humanity and suffering. Some of the most widespread criticism pertains to the book being 'trauma porn.' Readers believe that it is highly unrealistic to have such rotten luck, to be subjected to such inhumane treatment, again and again and again. While this being unrealistic may be true, I think it's very dangerous to think this way. It's amazing that readers have lived such a sheltered, privileged life that they cannot conceive of such traumatic experiences condensed into one lifetime, but nevertheless, it's not impossible. It may unrealistic, but not entirely implausible. In fact, there may have been people who have faced such treatment in real life. Calling such experiences 'trauma porn' is erasure, it's belittling and insensitive. Another thing I personally really enjoyed is the paragraphs discussing law and mathematics, and the chapters detailing Harold's experience with Jacob. I think the passages on adulthood and friendship, on parenthood and addiction, were actually very honest in their depiction. Furthermore, I truly love Yanagihara's prose. I really appreciate the way she writes, making everything simultaneously mundane and poetic. It's no doubt she's a spectacular writer. Some of the passages might seem extreme (as one user wrote, "do we really need to see another instance of Jude cutting himself?"), but an honest depiction of Jude's life needs this scenes. We need to see them to fully understand the depth of his capacity to hurt himself, to understand how deeply he is scarred. Another thing a lot of people talk about, is about how other characters, Willem and Andy and Harold, tried to get him to live, for the entirety of the novel. After all this, he still chose to commit suicide, so what was the point? I think, actually, that that WAS the entire point. Sometimes love, no matter how pure or freely given, is not enough. It tells us that sometimes our past governs who we are, sometimes it doesn't let us become someone else. This is not to say that all is lost, that everyone is hopeless, bound by shackles of their childhood. It is merely opposing the fairytale narrative that when we find people we love, everything magically gets better. No. It does not. I think that's very important, and perhaps a very realistic aspect of the book. The most touching parts of the story are not when we see Jude being abused, it's when he is grateful, for how his life has reversed. It's when he realises that for every person who failed him in some way, there is another who never will. And that's beautiful. A Little Life explores the question -- how much can someone withstand? How much before they must kill themselves? And although people say that suicide is never the answer, sometimes it is the only solution (NOT ENCOURAGING SUICIDE IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM). And despite everything, A Little Life teaches us that although death may be ultimately inevitable, we can value our lives and create things, do things, that leave an impact.
