What are US or Canadian cities that are safe, have plenty of good unique shopping, are lower in humidity but not ultra low like Nevada, have no natural disasters like tornadoes?
Safe US and Canadian cities include Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Montreal. All of these cities are lower in humidity than most US cities, have no natural disasters like tornadoes, and offer plenty of unique shopping options. Calgary is especially known for its outdoor activities and vibrant nightlife, while Edmonton is a great choice for those looking for a more laid-back atmosphere. If Winter is an issue, Vancouver only is an excellent option. Vancouver is also the best option for for those who want to enjoy the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, and Montreal is perfect for those who want to experience French culture without leaving North America. No matter what your interests are, you’re sure to find a safe city in the US or Canada that’s perfect for you.
For US cities without the Winter (not including the MidWest), I’ll include this excellent analysis by Peter Wade from Quora:
Step 1: Find US cities with a nice humidity level
Scientists say the optimal humidity level for comfort is between 35% and 55%. Nevada and Arizona are too dry, and Florida and Louisiana are too humid. If we aim for the yellow and light green areas, I think you’ll be quite comfortable. Since you originally stipulated very low humidity, even pleasant places like the San Diego and San Francisco areas will have to be eliminated. We’re going to get the humidity levels as low as we can without putting you in the desert.
Also, Hawaii and Alaska are not pictured. But any city big enough in those states to satisfy your preference for adequate shopping experiences would be disqualified by having humidity higher than what you desire. As a note, northwest Washington is within the highest humidity zone, but that does not equate to discomfort because of their moderate temperatures. But I’ll stay true to your question and will objectively search for very low humidity rather than inserting my personal opinion.
Step 2: Identify sufficiently populated US cities with adequate shopping
It’s hard to guess exactly what shopping opportunities are acceptable to you. But within the zone pictured above are 43 cities with more than 75,000 inhabitants. You’ll have to decide what population is too small for you (2020 U.S. Census populations included below). You’ve also stipulated cities rather than metropolitan areas, so keep in mind that some of these cities are smaller, but are suburbs of major metro areas and thus close to a significant amount of shopping.

Step 3: Eliminate cities with an above average risk of natural disasters
The question specifically identified tornados as a concern with a preference for no natural disasters at all. In another Quora post, I revealed that no areas in the regions we’re considering are completely free of natural disasters. It is nearly impossible to escape some degree of risk. But we’ll get that rate as low as possible. We would definitely want to eliminate cities with a higher risk of hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and wildfires.
That will knock out a few of our candidates in California, Oklahoma, and Texas. Other disasters like mudslides and flooding would only be risks in specific areas of town and wouldn’t disqualify an entire city from contention. I also analyzed wildfires, drought, blizzards, and every other type of disaster.
Step 4: Assess the crime rate in each city
The only thing left to do is to rank the 24 remaining candidates by crime rate to provide a top 5 list of cities that best fit your criteria.
Crime rate: 352.7 violent crimes per 100,000 people
3.) Centennial, Colorado
Average humidity: 51.5%
Metro population: 2,963,821 (Denver)
Natural disaster risk: Low (33.14%)
Crime rate: 180.9 violent crimes per 100,000 people
4.) Lakewood, Colorado
Average humidity: 51.6%
Metro population: 2,963,821 (Denver)
Natural disaster risk: Low (33.14%)
Crime rate: 644.1 violent crimes per 100,000 people
5.) Loveland, Colorado
Average humidity: 52.2%
Metro population: 359,066 (Fort Collins)
Natural disaster risk: Relatively low (41.65%)
Crime rate: 281.5 violent crimes per 100,000 people
Conclusion:
There are many US and Canadian cities that are safe, have plenty of good unique shopping, and are lower in humidity but not ultra low like Nevada. Some of these cities also have no natural disasters like tornadoes. Safe US and Canadian cities to live in include Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, and Halifax. These cities all have unique shopping experiences, with Ottawa having the Byward Market, Toronto having Chinatown and Kensington Market, Vancouver having Granville Island and Gastown, Calgary having the Beltline and Inglewood, Montreal having the Latin Quarter and Plateau Mont-Royal, and Halifax having the Seaport Farmers’ Market. All of these cities have a distinct character which makes them desirable places to live. In terms of US cities with no natural disasters, some notable examples include Austin, Texas; Boulder, Colorado; Fort Collins, Colorado; Denver, Colorado; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Portland, Oregon. These cities are all located in states that are relatively free from tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. As a result, they are considered to be some of the safest places to live in the US. Finally, many US cities have low humidity levels due to their location.
No city in the U.S. has made it into the top 10 Most Liveable Cities list — but it’s managed to avoid the list of worst places, too. However, the U.S. did manage to score in the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)’s Global Liveability Index Top 30, with Atlanta in 26th. Neighboring Canada saw three cities make the list: Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto. Traditionally, Austria and Switzerland have placed highly on the list, which is ranked on culture, health care, education, infrastructure and entertainment.
Which one is better to live in – Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
Do you feel like a big city slicker or a small town girl? Edmonton or Calgary – which one is better to live in? Both cities have their pros and cons, but when it comes down to it, we think Calgary takes the cake. Read on to find out why!
Calgary and Edmonton are the 2 biggest cities in Alberta, Canada. The question is which one is better to live in, Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
It is difficult to say which city is better to live in, as it ultimately depends on an individual’s personal preferences and priorities. Both Calgary and Edmonton have their own unique features and attractions, and which city is better for you will depend on what you are looking for in a place to live.
Here are some factors to consider when deciding between Calgary and Edmonton:
Location: Calgary is located in southern Alberta, near the Rocky Mountains, while Edmonton is located in central Alberta. This can be a factor to consider if you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing, or if you prefer a more urban environment.
Cost of living: Both Calgary and Edmonton have a relatively low cost of living compared to other major cities in Canada. However, Calgary tends to be more expensive than Edmonton, particularly in terms of housing costs.
Employment: Both cities have strong economies and a diverse range of industries, including oil and gas, healthcare, and technology. Unemployment rates in both cities are generally low.
Climate: Calgary and Edmonton both have cold winters and warm summers, with Calgary generally experiencing cooler temperatures and more snowfall.
Ultimately, the decision of which city is better to live in will depend on your personal circumstances and what you are looking for in a place to call home. It may be helpful to research and compare the two cities in more detail to determine which one is a better fit for you.

What are the pros and cons of Calgary vs Edmonton.
As someone who has lived in both cities for more than 3 years and is still living in Calgary:
Weather: you have more sunshine and less harsh winter in Calgary with occasional positive temperature in the middle of the winter because of the Chinook winds: Calgary wins
Cost of life: Edmonton rent, home ownership, food, clothing is slightly cheaper than same items in Calgary: Edmonton wins
Job Opportunities: more blue collar jobs in Edmonton, more white collar jobs in Calgary: tie
Education: Edmonton has one of the top university in Canada called University of Alberta. University of Calgary has a first class business school called Hayskane school of business. Edmonton wins.
City’s architecture: Calgary seems newer, nicely architected and just more beautiful to me by far: Calgary wins
People: just the same to me, no difference: tie
Size and population: Calgary (1.3 million people, 825 km2) is larger and have more people than Edmonton (1 million people, 684 km2): I won’t call this a win
Mountains and lakes :Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Jasper National Park, Waterton Lakes National Park, are all closer to Calgary than Edmonton. Calgary is 1 hour from Banff, and day trips to the mountains are very common. Edmonton is 4 hours from Jasper, and trips to the mountains are more of a long weekend activity: Calgary Wins
Summer festivities: Both cities have great and similar festivals, but Calgary hosts the greatest western festival on earth in July called the Stampede. Sylvan Lake is halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. Calgary wins.
Sunshine: Calgary has way more sunshine that Edmonton. In fact, Calgary is amongst the top city with sunshine exposure in the entire country. Sunshine is happiness. Calgary wins.
Politics: Both cities are economically conservative. Edmonton is a little bit more socially liberal than Calgary. Who cares? Tie.
Sports: Flames(NHL)and Stampeders(CFL)in Calgary, Oiler(NHL) and Eskimos(CFL) in Edmonton. Several amateur leagues, indoor and outdoor facilities for soccer, hockey, basketball, football and baseball in both cities; ShowUpAndPlay in Calgary, ShowUpAndPlay in Edmonton : Tie
Cleanliness: Calgary is one of the cleanness cities in the world. I am in awe myself whenever I walk downtown and in my neighbourhood of Walden. Calgary wins by far.
Public Transit: Calgary C-Train has 3 lines and covers all 4 quadrants of the city(NW, SW,SE,NE) with multiple park and rides location at various C-Train stations. There are buses in almost every neighborhoods in Calgary connecting you to the nearest C-Train station. Edmonton Transit Services (ETS) provides service on buses and light-rail transit within the City of Edmonton limits, in addition to Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, Beaumont, and the Edmonton Garrison at Namao. It also provides connections to suburban transit services. Calgary Wins.
With all that in mind, I’ll choose Calgary any day.
Has anyone ever got a parking ticket after the restaurant was closed? We went to the metro the other night and parked behind it. Came out after the movie to a parking ticket lol. Obviously I'm not going to pay it, but I was baffled they would give out a ticket since the restaurant is closed submitted by /u/PanicInTheStreets [link] [comments]
Sorry if this isn't the right type of post for the Calgary subreddit. I've been searching all over for a game called Paper Mario color splash, for the Wii U . My son is obsessed with paper Mario, and I'm trying to find it for him. I've been all over town to GameStop and best buy. Been looking on FB and Kijiji and Craigslist, can't find it at all. Are there any used video game shops that sell Wii u games ( GameStop and Best Buy don't carry old systems). Or if someone has a copy they no longer use, I'd be very interested in purchasing from them. Thanks submitted by /u/Admirable-Fix-2245 [link] [comments]
Super random, some girl dropped a few random empty boxes off in front of my door today, on my doorbell camera, the car she was driving looks like it's parked a around the corner from my house , fedex info on the box is from about 5 minutes away but no name can be seen fully. Obviously not a huge deal but just wondering why the hell someone would do this? a house marking thing, are they porch pirates and disposing the evidence (if so they are likely a few houses away from me which could be annoying ), are they just lazy fucks trying to ditch their cardboard which is odd because there are dumpsters in the alley even closer to their possible house than where mine is . Seems odd . Not a big deal but curious if anyone has thoughts on this? submitted by /u/pizzalovingking [link] [comments]

Hey everyone, I’m heading to Calgary for a two-night stay over Labor Day weekend before heading to Vancouver to board my Alaska cruise! I’m staying at a hotel in downtown, not renting a car. My flight is scheduled to land at 11am Saturday (coming from the USA) and I am flying to Vancouver at 2:30pm Monday so I will be in Calgary just over 48 hours. I am spending my only full day taking a day-long tour to Banff & Lake Louise, so I really only have Saturday afternoon & evening and Monday morning. I am interested in visiting any of the following places: Calgary Tower Calgary Zoo Devonian Gardens Fort Calgary National Music Centre Peace Bridge Prince’s Island Park Which of the above can I realistically fit in during my time in Calgary? Any dining recommendations for low/moderate budget? Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/theboundlesstraveler [link] [comments]

Edit: Suite 69 was a little night club next to the strat. That place ruled also! Edit 2: Holy shit does anyone remember the push-up guy!? Early 2000s whyte ave also lol. That dude would do as many as you’d donate in dollars - or if he was real hurting on a slow night he’d do “50 one armed pushups” or other feats of push-up strength. Had my homies and I so hyped on drunk nights LOL. I’ve recently moved back from a fifteen year break (travel, school, work etc) and was sooooo disappointed to see that my two favourite old bars are no longer around. Does anything that exists today match that same late 90s early 2000s whyte ave vibe? submitted by /u/MeDaddyMeSnow [link] [comments]

Just to add some info, I received a quote for $650 to pressure wash my 1200 sqft driveway. Comparing to many other cities this seems very high. Maybe due to the seasonality of it but pressure washing doesn’t seem to be a big business here and maybe that’s why prices are so high? Have a good day! submitted by /u/HoundNose [link] [comments]

Edit: Thanks for the recommendations and the laughs. I think we're good for go. You all made my mom's day! The animal doesn't matter. Dogs, bunnies, alpacas, goats, bears... Hi! My best friend and I want to go kayaking this summer. She has a T5 injury, so she is paralyzed from her chest down. Looking to hear from anyone that has experience with the Adaptive Paddling Program at Bowness, or if you have tried any other one in or around the Calgary area. My main questions are, did they have special kayaks with back rests for people with a higher injury? Did you enjoy the program and recommend it? Anything else you'd like to share would be appreciated. Thanks! submitted by /u/lace_and_lemons [link] [comments]

I have been having a difficult time making ends meet, especially with inflation and the cost of living lately. Does anyone know of services, programs, etc that a disabled person can access for help? I know there shouldn't be a stigma around using the food bank, but I personally know people who volunteer there and it makes me incredibly anxious to even think about using it if they found out. Edit: I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to reply to this post. Your kind words and advice are very helpful. This morning around 10:15am our cat, Duchess, was attacked and killed by one of the bobcats that roam around. My wife was home at the time and, at 8.5 months pregnant, chased the bobcat off and brought the cat inside. Now before everyone goes off saying "cats shouldn't be outside" and all that shit, she only goes out with us, eats grass around the front deck, and sits on the deck chairs. That was her safe space near the front door. My wife was just loading stuff in from the car and was inside for a minute and then it happened. Anyways, be careful with your animals out there. RIP Duchess submitted by /u/runningfromthecia [link] [comments]

I recently got interviewed and got asked how old i was when i moved to Calgary and where i was originally from. Asked if i was married, and commented "if you are still enjoy your single life, right"? I just think it is obvious to be asked. I've never gotten asked in the past. These questions hit me because i am not new graduate and about middle-aged guy who was looking to change my career, so i took some trade program for these career. I just feel down myself for begin too old for some sort of trade. The owner is Asian and have their 2-3 family members work in the place. I saw they also instructed the work order in their language. I only saw an only outsider that speak English. To them, it might be cultural difference and might be ok to ask? I just feel useless... We have recently purchased a house and so far all of the contractors have let us down in one way or another. Most were recommendations of the house inspector we used and are now learning of all the things our home inspector either missed or failed to disclose. Obviously I no longer trust his recommendations so I'm wondering where you find your contractors from, or if you have any recommendation of companies that have done good quality work? Or does everyone just give up on contractors and learn to do it yourself because that's where I'm at atm. submitted by /u/unequalsarcasm [link] [comments]

This has been a pretty terrible experience but I'm hoping there's something we can do. The timeline is very long and I have a 7 page document expalining things in depth, but the gist of it is: My wife and I moved to Edmonton and signed a lease for a basement suite that was from April 1st, 2023, to March 31st, 2024. On February 12th, we signed a new lease lasting from April 1st, 2024 to March 31st, 2025. On February 28th, after a few incidents, our upstairs neighbour's part of the house was broken into by 4 masked men looking to hurt her. We were in a different province at the time due to being with my father while he recovered from heart surgery. We were told by police that it's not a safe place to live and that we should leave as soon as possible. We did not try to break our current lease, we had paid March's rent and we're trying to break our lease which started April 1st, over a month later. On that same day, I emailed Martello Group (formerly Wisteria Homes) explaining that we no longer feel safe there and that we need to break our lease. After several back and forths between us and the property manager, the landlord supposedly would only accept a break of the lease if we paid an $800 re-rental fee and signed off to pay any cleaning/damages that they may find. We felt that it wouldn't be in our best interest to do that considering they had clearly only wanted more money, and signing something like that gives them all the power to charge us anything they want. We moved out on March 22nd, got the place professionally cleaned and documented everything. Throughout this experience, we also have phone calls with police, doorbell footage, emails, lots of evidence. Now they've sent me an estimate saying we owe the landlord over 17K. Majority of the cost is saying that it's how much rent we owe for the upcoming year, yet their estimate comes out to more than $2000 over what that would be. To give an example of how they treat people, they wanted us to remove our upstairs neighbour (who is a victim of domestic abuse) from our own personal video doorbell because they had doubts she wasn't involved in the break in. We invited her to have access to that doorbell so that she could feel a bit safer seeing who was at our door when we dealt with another incident a few months prior. The property manager also went as far as to ask me if I'm sure I spoke to a real police officer. I've spoken to Service Alberta and there's not much we can do. If we started a dispute, I'm worried it won't be in our favor since we did technically sign the new lease. I also tried contacting a few news companies about this because there was a LOT that happened and that we documented, but haven't heard back from any. If anyone is able to help in anyway, it would mean the world to us. submitted by /u/Plastic_Coconut_8965 [link] [comments]
