Which one is better to live in – Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
Do you feel like a big city slicker or a small town girl? Edmonton or Calgary – which one is better to live in? Both cities have their pros and cons, but when it comes down to it, we think Calgary takes the cake. Read on to find out why!
Calgary and Edmonton are the 2 biggest cities in Alberta, Canada. The question is which one is better to live in, Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
It is difficult to say which city is better to live in, as it ultimately depends on an individual’s personal preferences and priorities. Both Calgary and Edmonton have their own unique features and attractions, and which city is better for you will depend on what you are looking for in a place to live.
Here are some factors to consider when deciding between Calgary and Edmonton:
Location: Calgary is located in southern Alberta, near the Rocky Mountains, while Edmonton is located in central Alberta. This can be a factor to consider if you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing, or if you prefer a more urban environment.
Cost of living: Both Calgary and Edmonton have a relatively low cost of living compared to other major cities in Canada. However, Calgary tends to be more expensive than Edmonton, particularly in terms of housing costs.
Employment: Both cities have strong economies and a diverse range of industries, including oil and gas, healthcare, and technology. Unemployment rates in both cities are generally low.
Climate: Calgary and Edmonton both have cold winters and warm summers, with Calgary generally experiencing cooler temperatures and more snowfall.
Ultimately, the decision of which city is better to live in will depend on your personal circumstances and what you are looking for in a place to call home. It may be helpful to research and compare the two cities in more detail to determine which one is a better fit for you.
What are the pros and cons of Calgary vs Edmonton.
As someone who has lived in both cities for more than 3 years and is still living in Calgary:
Weather: you have more sunshine and less harsh winter in Calgary with occasional positive temperature in the middle of the winter because of the Chinook winds: Calgary wins
Cost of life: Edmonton rent, home ownership, food, clothing is slightly cheaper than same items in Calgary: Edmonton wins
Job Opportunities: more blue collar jobs in Edmonton, more white collar jobs in Calgary: tie
Education: Edmonton has one of the top university in Canada called University of Alberta. University of Calgary has a first class business school called Hayskane school of business. Edmonton wins.
City’s architecture: Calgary seems newer, nicely architected and just more beautiful to me by far: Calgary wins
People: just the same to me, no difference: tie
Size and population: Calgary (1.3 million people, 825 km2) is larger and have more people than Edmonton (1 million people, 684 km2): I won’t call this a win
Mountains and lakes :Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Jasper National Park, Waterton Lakes National Park, are all closer to Calgary than Edmonton. Calgary is 1 hour from Banff, and day trips to the mountains are very common. Edmonton is 4 hours from Jasper, and trips to the mountains are more of a long weekend activity: Calgary Wins
Summer festivities: Both cities have great and similar festivals, but Calgary hosts the greatest western festival on earth in July called the Stampede. Sylvan Lake is halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. Calgary wins.
Sunshine: Calgary has way more sunshine that Edmonton. In fact, Calgary is amongst the top city with sunshine exposure in the entire country. Sunshine is happiness. Calgary wins.
Politics: Both cities are economically conservative. Edmonton is a little bit more socially liberal than Calgary. Who cares? Tie.
Sports: Flames(NHL)and Stampeders(CFL)in Calgary, Oiler(NHL) and Eskimos(CFL) in Edmonton. Several amateur leagues, indoor and outdoor facilities for soccer, hockey, basketball, football and baseball in both cities; ShowUpAndPlay in Calgary, ShowUpAndPlay in Edmonton : Tie
Cleanliness: Calgary is one of the cleanness cities in the world. I am in awe myself whenever I walk downtown and in my neighbourhood of Walden. Calgary wins by far.
Public Transit: Calgary C-Train has 3 lines and covers all 4 quadrants of the city(NW, SW,SE,NE) with multiple park and rides location at various C-Train stations. There are buses in almost every neighborhoods in Calgary connecting you to the nearest C-Train station. Edmonton Transit Services (ETS) provides service on buses and light-rail transit within the City of Edmonton limits, in addition to Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, Beaumont, and the Edmonton Garrison at Namao. It also provides connections to suburban transit services. Calgary Wins.
With all that in mind, I’ll choose Calgary any day.
Deal was sealed with Saskatchewan’s win over Edmonton today. This is the first absence for the Stamps since 2004, having been a powerhouse team since then. 5 Grey Cups in 26 years. Calgary attendance is also at its lowest level since the mid-80s, which is tough to see. If you’re a sports fan, what keeps you away from Stampeders games? My feeling is poor ownership on behalf of CSEC, in particular poor marketing to new Canadians and our influx of people from Eastern cities where CFL isn’t as popular. I not sure “we’re a big city now” is a good excuse, as Vancouver has broken attendance records this season, and attendance is healthy in Regina & Winnipeg. submitted by /u/Level_Stomach6682 [link] [comments]
Won a first aid kit from them and then got put into a informative lesson on fire safety for around 2 hours and I thought it was just gonna be a couple hundreds at most. And then they gave me the price of like $3600 for a package! I just don’t think this is a good price, but what’s your opinion on it. $3600 is just way too much man. Would you spend 600 for like 1 fire detector? Feels like a scam not gonna lie submitted by /u/the-mannthe-myth [link] [comments]
Eggnog I'm so so with. But having it mixed with shine as a drink mix. Could be worth a try. So I'm picking it up at shawnessy co-op. Plus gotta get some mead for Thanksgiving. Saw these guys when going back for another pumpkin wine. They ran out when I went back for more pumpkin. But they called me back and said they got it back in. Thought I'd share my mind if you guys are also looking. submitted by /u/Orange_cat_653 [link] [comments]
We are headed to your fair city for a concert in November. Looking to book a hotel and in the past, we've booked one near a c train station so we don't have to try to park at the Saddledome. I was just wondering with all the construction lately if this is still a good option? We used to get off at the Victoria station. TIA! submitted by /u/CanadianLady83 [link] [comments]

I've noticed walking here a lot this summer that not a single biker has ever rang there bell or even made a noise to let me know they are behind me . Getting hit by a bike is no joke and people go flying by silently ! Does anyone know why this is? Do bikes not come with bells anymore or is this a trend in recent years? Just curious as a non bike rider here but as someone who walks daily submitted by /u/Common_Stress_4122 [link] [comments]
Just this afternoon there's been loads of Calgary police cars and helicopters in Okotoks, just wondering what's happening? They're blasting through intersections, speeding all over the place, obviously looking for someone. submitted by /u/VesselNBA [link] [comments]
I like my current dentist but despite having 100% dental coverage I am constantly having to pay an extra $60-90 for a cleaning because my clinic charges above the fee guide Any recommendations for dentists in the NW that actually follow the fee guide? submitted by /u/Asleep_Machine48 [link] [comments]
Hello! This might be a stretch but I lost this plush keychain today while in Inglewood or at the Inglewood bird sanctuary. It was a gift from my long distance boyfriend so it is very dear to my heart and it would mean the world to me if it was found. Please let me know if you have seen him or share with anyone you know who may have been in the area. submitted by /u/BananaButtStuff [link] [comments]

The Waiporous/Water Valley/Sundre area is a hot spot on the continent for fatal bear attacks. See the map screenshot below (data source: Wikipedia - List of Fatal Bear Attacks). Note, some attack locations may not be specific, as they were geocoded based on descriptions of locations. The map shows all attacks from the year 2000 to present. Fatal Bear Attacks in Western Canada Here is a screenshot a bit more zoomed in (note again, some of the exact locations were best guesses based on the descriptions, not actual GPS coordinates). Also note that this map is just fatal attack locations, there have been numerous non-fatal attacks in recent years in the same area. I've often wondered why this was, and I think this article really exposes why. I will try my best to summarize possible reasons (from that article and my own conjecture): Large, healthy grizzly bear population in the area. High density of linear disturbance from Oil and Gas, Logging, Recreational trails. This correlates to higher frequency of encounters with humans. Large number of recreational users of area due to proximity to Calgary. Lack of funding means few or no outhouse, waste disposal facilities, wildlife patrol officers, etc in the area. This means bears are used to getting into garbage, human feces, etc. Which makes them associate humans with food. Rural properties in the area with livestock means bears are used to finding food around human habitation. I don't mean to make this post to make people fearful, as bear attacks are still quite rare, but I am hoping that this is a wake up call to Albertans to put pressure on the provincial government to better fund facilities and operations to manage users and wildlife in the Ghost Waiporous area as was recommended in the Ghost-Waiparous Access Management Plan (GAMP). submitted by /u/GnosticSon [link] [comments]
Going to post in the lost and found page on Facebook, taking him to the vet later to check for a microchip as yes I’m almost certain he’s someone else’s cat, in which case we definitely aren’t kidnapping someone else’s pet. Thank you for your comments submitted by /u/nevadarae92 [link] [comments]
Hey y’all. I’m hoping to reach a few more people out here to see if anyone has seen my sisters dog or knows anything. On Sept 10, Daisy ran off from family members in Applewood and hasn’t been seen since. My sister and her family (including a 1 year old who cries for ‘Wah Wah’ sometimes) are desperately trying to find her again. Super sad, they were on vacation and came home to this news. If anyone’s seen or heard anything, please let me know. She’s been posted on all the Facebook groups and we scour the lost dogs sites constantly. We just want to bring this little boofer back! submitted by /u/Spicy-Cheeto808 [link] [comments]

I walk to work from home now so I haven’t had to drive much in the last year, other than for errands. I had to go up Crowchild to Varsity NW from Bow Trail, & then to Kensington last Saturday, and on that drive, I witnessed: 4 (FOUR) separate occasions of drivers in the left lane and drivers in the right lane merging into the middle lane at the same time and quickly needing to swerve back into their lane, 2 cars riding the middle of two lanes for a solid +500m, 1 car casually run a red light, 1 guy who was so inebriated and swaying through the road with a help sign off Crowchild & 26 Ave and cars going +80km/h trying to avoid him, another guy who was also high and trying to run across the road down Kensington Road and yelling (car in front of me almost hit him). On top of all of that, no one I ended up behind could maintain their speed, with an increase in drivers randomly braking at high speeds with no one in front of them. Ive always tried to keep a a safe distance behind cars in front of me but I am staying FAR AWAY from all of you!! Stay safe and be aware of your surroundings!! TL;DR: there’s an insane amount of reckless driving on the roads, it’s unsafe and i don’t want to be near any cars when i drive now submitted by /u/throwRA93981617 [link] [comments]
