Which one is better to live in – Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
Do you feel like a big city slicker or a small town girl? Edmonton or Calgary – which one is better to live in? Both cities have their pros and cons, but when it comes down to it, we think Calgary takes the cake. Read on to find out why!
Calgary and Edmonton are the 2 biggest cities in Alberta, Canada. The question is which one is better to live in, Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
It is difficult to say which city is better to live in, as it ultimately depends on an individual’s personal preferences and priorities. Both Calgary and Edmonton have their own unique features and attractions, and which city is better for you will depend on what you are looking for in a place to live.
Here are some factors to consider when deciding between Calgary and Edmonton:
Location: Calgary is located in southern Alberta, near the Rocky Mountains, while Edmonton is located in central Alberta. This can be a factor to consider if you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing, or if you prefer a more urban environment.
Cost of living: Both Calgary and Edmonton have a relatively low cost of living compared to other major cities in Canada. However, Calgary tends to be more expensive than Edmonton, particularly in terms of housing costs.
Employment: Both cities have strong economies and a diverse range of industries, including oil and gas, healthcare, and technology. Unemployment rates in both cities are generally low.
Climate: Calgary and Edmonton both have cold winters and warm summers, with Calgary generally experiencing cooler temperatures and more snowfall.
Ultimately, the decision of which city is better to live in will depend on your personal circumstances and what you are looking for in a place to call home. It may be helpful to research and compare the two cities in more detail to determine which one is a better fit for you.

What are the pros and cons of Calgary vs Edmonton.
As someone who has lived in both cities for more than 3 years and is still living in Calgary:
Weather: you have more sunshine and less harsh winter in Calgary with occasional positive temperature in the middle of the winter because of the Chinook winds: Calgary wins
Cost of life: Edmonton rent, home ownership, food, clothing is slightly cheaper than same items in Calgary: Edmonton wins
Job Opportunities: more blue collar jobs in Edmonton, more white collar jobs in Calgary: tie
Education: Edmonton has one of the top university in Canada called University of Alberta. University of Calgary has a first class business school called Hayskane school of business. Edmonton wins.
City’s architecture: Calgary seems newer, nicely architected and just more beautiful to me by far: Calgary wins
People: just the same to me, no difference: tie
Size and population: Calgary (1.3 million people, 825 km2) is larger and have more people than Edmonton (1 million people, 684 km2): I won’t call this a win
Mountains and lakes :Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Jasper National Park, Waterton Lakes National Park, are all closer to Calgary than Edmonton. Calgary is 1 hour from Banff, and day trips to the mountains are very common. Edmonton is 4 hours from Jasper, and trips to the mountains are more of a long weekend activity: Calgary Wins
Summer festivities: Both cities have great and similar festivals, but Calgary hosts the greatest western festival on earth in July called the Stampede. Sylvan Lake is halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. Calgary wins.
Sunshine: Calgary has way more sunshine that Edmonton. In fact, Calgary is amongst the top city with sunshine exposure in the entire country. Sunshine is happiness. Calgary wins.
Politics: Both cities are economically conservative. Edmonton is a little bit more socially liberal than Calgary. Who cares? Tie.
Sports: Flames(NHL)and Stampeders(CFL)in Calgary, Oiler(NHL) and Eskimos(CFL) in Edmonton. Several amateur leagues, indoor and outdoor facilities for soccer, hockey, basketball, football and baseball in both cities; ShowUpAndPlay in Calgary, ShowUpAndPlay in Edmonton : Tie
Cleanliness: Calgary is one of the cleanness cities in the world. I am in awe myself whenever I walk downtown and in my neighbourhood of Walden. Calgary wins by far.
Public Transit: Calgary C-Train has 3 lines and covers all 4 quadrants of the city(NW, SW,SE,NE) with multiple park and rides location at various C-Train stations. There are buses in almost every neighborhoods in Calgary connecting you to the nearest C-Train station. Edmonton Transit Services (ETS) provides service on buses and light-rail transit within the City of Edmonton limits, in addition to Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, Beaumont, and the Edmonton Garrison at Namao. It also provides connections to suburban transit services. Calgary Wins.
With all that in mind, I’ll choose Calgary any day.
(Context below for those curious) I couldn't catch your name and I know that if you are on Reddit you won't see this for a few days but I hope you are doing well and that you found a way to go back to your home! I'm the College student in the gray and white raincoat and yellow umbrella that you spoke to today April 24th! I just wanted to have some news as I was a bit worried about you today after we parted ways Context: Hello people from Calgary! As you may have guessed I'm a random montrealer who's trying to find this man I met in the streets looking for a way back to his home in Calgary. I forgot to ask his name he said he was in Montreal for work but his belongings were gone/stolen including wallet, phone etc. I know it's far from enough but I gave 40$ to try and bridge the gap to pay for a ticket. Happy Wednesday! This is a continuation of my pattern of posting what I think are decent grocery deals with the hope that this will save some people some money. As noted previously this is heavily skewed to items that I and my family eat. There are probably additional items that are good deals but I don't know it because they aren't items I use but hopefully my list is still useful to you. A few quick reminders: PC Optimum points are collected at No Frills and Superstore. 1,000pts is worth $1. Scene+ points are collected at Safeway, Sobeys and FreshCo. 100pts is worth $1. The value of Save on Foods points depends on what you redeem them for. If you redeem them for a 4L jug of milk then 1,000pts is worth about $1.50. Other redemptions might make them more or less valuable. Superstore, No Frills and FreshCo are generally willing to price match identical products from (some) other major grocery stores if you show them the item in the competitor’s flyer while checking out so knowing what is on sale at stores that you don't visit can still be useful. I'm told that Save on Foods will also price match, though I have no first hand experience with them. There are some restrictions on this... FreshCo won't price match Safeway or Sobeys. Superstore (at least sometimes) won't price match Coop. The No Frills on 85st SW won't price match FreshCo. Finally, thank you to everyone that has posted positive comments. It's always nice to receive positive feedback. This is bugging me....When they say property taxes are increasing 8.9%. Does that mean the tax rate on property values is increasing 8.9% OR the overall revenue the city needs to generate is increasing by 8.9% (but the rate increase may be less because there are new properties and assessments generally go up). submitted by /u/Ok-Minimum-71 [link] [comments]
I have been wanting to pull the trigger (edited) on putting an offer on my first ever house. Can anyone shed some light about how it is living in North Ogden? Schools? Hi Calgarians! I work for Public Art and Calgary Arts Development - we've gradually been taking over operation of the City of Calgary's public art programs. I've received moderator permission to share these with you, in case anyone in the subreddit is interested. For community members and organizations, we're collecting applications for more utility box artwork in your neighbourhoods. This program has been on pause since 2019, so we're really excited to bring it back. For new or emerging artists connected to northeast Calgary, you can apply to have existing artwork showcased in our mini galleries - and get paid for it. If anyone has any questions, I'll try to check this thread regularly! Utility Box Artwork The Utility Box Public Art program works with communities to create temporary artworks on local utility boxes. Since 2010, more than 200 utility box artworks have been created. This year, Calgary Arts Development is hoping to fund and guide the creation of 20 to 40 utility box artworks. Any community in the city may apply to the opportunity. The deadline to apply for this year's intake is May 31, 2024. For more details, visit: https://calgaryartsdevelopment.com/public-art/opportunities/all/utility-box-public-art-program/ Northeast Mini Galleries Artwork Artists with existing 2D or 3D artwork who work, live or have a strong connection to northeast Calgary, are invited to apply to the Northeast Mini Galleries Public Art Program. Every year 39 pieces are selected for showcase in these galleries. This is a great opportunity for new or emerging artists to have their art showcased - including a payment of $973 should their work be selected. The deadline to apply is May 8, 2024. Hi all, my mom lives in Calgary and she just got a new computer. Her old crashed (not too sure what happened but it's really dead). She would like someone to recover whatever is possible off the old machine (files, photos) and move it onto the new computer. She needs help and would like it to be in-person (rather than doing it herself with online support) as she is not very tech-savvy. I don't know where to send her and can't help her myself as I don't live in Calgary. I checked Best Buy's geek squad but I think that is just remote support, plus I would rather support a local business. I think it would be great if she could find somewhere that is close and trustworthy where she can take her computer if it gives her any future issues. Any recommendations? She is located in the Northwest. submitted by /u/Traditional-Basil427 [link] [comments]

Today while putting my garbage in my bin, my neighbours unleashed dog in their front yard came over and barked and growled at me. I was shocked and my neighbour just sat there not saying or getting up or anything. I actually was scared and I told the dog to go away. The dog was a few feet away from me but stayed on their property though. I tried to see if there's a bylaw on this and can't seem to find anything... I'm nervous my kids will get hurt when they're out playing in our driveway. My one kid has been bit before and is quite scared of some dogs. Is this allowed? I just want to make sure I know what is allowed or not before I talk to her. submitted by /u/Reasonable-Estate-87 [link] [comments]
I've seen a number of folks over the last two and a half days who have waited a long time to speak and who are using their 5 minutes to mention conspiracy theories, communism, how they hate Trudeau, etc. The whole point of these hearings is to get council (the decision makers) to understand your POV and sway their decision. I don't know what these folks are trying to accomplish with these comments. What are they trying to accomplish? Do they think council members are going to say "Oh yeah, I hadn't thought about how those stinkin' Commies are influencing my colleagues, I better vote against this! We're the Blue Sky City, not a city of reds." or "Preach friend! I bite my thumb at Trudeau too! F that guy, let's not do this because it's something he'd love and I ain't no Liberal puppet!" submitted by /u/UrbaneBoffin [link] [comments]

Where is the best place to complain to the city about traffic in my neighbourhood? I thought 311, but can’t find a match when it shows the subjects. More than half of people driving here go well over 40km/hr, nobody slows for the school/playground zones, and I just had a dodge ram (of course it was) almost run me off the road because I was going 40 in the 40 zone… had my kid in the car and I am beyond pissed with what could’ve happened. Was following me SO aggressively for a few blocks, then when I slowed down to turn off, they pulled out to my right and swerved back in almost clipping me. Fkn twat bag, hope you were driving that aggressively cause you got caught drunk on site and just got fired. Anyway, I’ve had enough of the bad driving here. Help please. submitted by /u/Worldly_Insect4969 [link] [comments]

First time homebuyer in Calgary, had an offer accepted on a condo, everything looking peachy. However, receiving some of their condo documents, I'm not sure if these are red flags? 1) I've hired a condo doc review company, however they can't perform the review as they have not received all documents from the seller, specifically the Disclosure/Information Statement. Offer was accepted April 9th; it is now April 24th, this is much longer than the 10 day window that they are supposed to provide by? 2) 2018 building with 51 units, reserve fund study performed in 2019. Reserve fund of $11k was found to be ~$50k deficit, special assessment performed in 2020 for ~$10k for this unit. The 2019 reserve fund study used a 2.5% inflation factor (we know now it is much higher than that) and projected for 2024 to have $250k; current reserves, $42k. Since another reserve study is required be done this year, this seems very high risk for another assessment? 3) Condo fees have also been kept low, 2019 Reserve fund study recommended 181% increase. The condo board raised it 15%. Reserve fund contributions for 2024 was projected to be $70k assuming the reserve was also fully funded; currrently only $36k, so every year getting further and further behind? 4) Condo board drama. In 2019, an Extraordinary General Meeting was called and the president of the board (who also happens to be CEO of the developer that built the building), and half of the board was removed for multiple Condo Property Act and building bylaw violations/conflicts of interest. The board members removed were investors and non-residents. Flash forward to December 2023, one of those removed members is now the current board president, and the rest of the seats are also now investor filled, with ties to the developer company. Meeting minutes since then have been very sparse, with no mention of budget/financials, despite it being a topic of business in the previous owner-resident run board minutes. This unit I'm buying also happens to be owned by one of those board members/developer, who I assume is looking to divest due to the potential upcoming special assessment. Red flag? submitted by /u/NinjaSpecter [link] [comments]
