How did people live before Google Search?

What are some lesser known Google Chrome tips and hacks?

Which are some of the best Google search fun tricks?

Why should I use DuckDuckGo instead of Google?

I choose DuckDuckGo. The reason I use DDG is exactly as they advertise. They do not track you. They do not collect your information, and the advertisements displayed relate only to your search query, not your personal information.

I have no understanding of how their search engine works, and do not care that they may utilise some Googles services to work effectively. (If they actually do). Ultimately, my searches are private, and on following a search term result, no other bleed information is collected either. Privacy is promised, and they deliver it very, very effectively.

Initially, their search results were a little ‘wobbly’, but as time has gone by, and users have increased, I am more than satisfied with both their service and their search results. Along with their search engine, I use their Privacy Essentials add-on extension. This app allows me to effectively block all trackers, gives me a quick summary of the page/site I land on and above all, gives me the final choice of whether I want to be tracked or not. Generally speaking, I choose not. Hands down, DDG is the best solution to on-line privacy, and I highly recommend their services to everyone I meet.

Google on the other hand, has a business model which relies solely on their being able to track all your online activity. To ensure they are able to collect all your information, they offer many Google services, not just a search engine. Google Maps, Docs, Drive and so on. Google promises a smoother, more streamlined online experience, and require your information to achieve this.

Many people mistakenly think that I do not ‘like’ Google, and that I detest their information gathering habits. This is not so. I believe the individual has the ultimate power to choose which service best suits their needs. There is no one holding a gun to your head forcing you to use their service. Of course, the one exception to this is my wholly fictitious Google Account which I have to own to enjoy YouTube services fully. I am still holding on to the hope that a decent alternative to YouTube may magically appear!

I live in a third world country where the ‘rule of law’ is a sham and does not really exist. For a policeman on the take, it is very easy to confiscate a device, automatically log in to the suspects my activity Google account, and find all the information required to hang them from the nearest tree. My argument is not against Google, but rather against the ignorance of the majority of users who have no idea of firstly, to what degree their online activity is being collected and stored, and secondly, that their information can very easily be accessed by those who can hurt them.

So for myself, and all those in my country, and those in any similar country, Duck Duck Go is easily, the best choice.

DuckDuckGo vs Google

Big Data, Big Money

When you are using Google Chrome on your mobile, by default, it is set to use Google’s search engine. You don’t even have to visit Google, just begin typing in the address bar and Google will do the needful. Google tracks your keyword searches, so if I search for the price of MacBook Air which shows a buyer intent, sites I visit after that may have Google ads showing MacBook prices in my local currency. Google also tracks your location so ads are more personalized based on where you live.

To conclude:

Google search is a barometer of what the world is interested in—be it news, trends, or just general information. And as one of the most popular websites in the world, Google processes billions of searches every day. While the company doesn’t release exact numbers, Google does provide general statistics about Google search. According to Google, the top three most searched topics are weather, sports, and celebrity news. The majority of Google searches are conducted on mobile devices, with more than 60% of searches coming from phones and tablets. And finally, the most googled question in 2020 was “What is coronavirus?” With so many people turning to Google for answers, it’s clear that the search engine is an essential part of our modern lives.
