What is Azure VM temporary storage?
In Azure, every VM – regardless if Linux or Windows – gets a temporary disk assigned automatically. This temporary disk is located on the physical server (the hypervisor) where the Azure VM is hosted and is non-persistent. Disks used by the operating system or additionally added data disks are persistent disks and stored in Azure Storage.
Azure VM’s can be moved from its current host to new host at any time due to maintenance, hardware failures or other reasons. In such an event, the data from the temporary storage will not preserve or moved to the new host. Apart from the hardware failures, there are many other reasons data from the temporary disk will be lost:
- Resizing of the VM
- Restarting of the VM
- Moving from one host to another
- Updating/upgrading of host
Really, the temporary disk should never be used for data that has to be persistent. To avoid misconfiguration, the disk also has the drive label “Temporary Storage” and includes a text file “DATALOSS_WARNING_README.txt”. Read more here…
Does Azure VM include a Windows license?
It depends on the virtual machine type we talk about. Some Azure virtual machines include a Windows operating system license in their price (some even include a SQL Server). Wow, what a difference a couple of days and a different set of questions makes. I took the exam Monday and fell just short of passing (659), and I retook it today and scored 850! Scotty Duffy’s Udemy Course – this was a bit of a waste of time and money in my eyes, nowhere near detailed enough. There are some reviews from people saying they passed the exam using this course alone with no experience using Azure but I really do not believe that.
Tim Warner’s YouTube series – this was great bearing in mind it was free. Way more worth the time than Scott’s, I wish I’d have started here.
Tutorials Dojo Practise Exams – I’d only recommend using these exams to test your knowledge and build some confidence, the questions in the exam were more difficult but the format and nature of these give you a good idea of what to expect.

What an exciting journey. I think AZ-900 is the hardest probably because it is my first Microsoft certification. Afterwards, the others are fair enough. AI-900 is the easiest.

Literally just passed the exam an hour or so ago 🙂 Not full points but whatever, ~900 is enough.
Have 0 experience with any of it, actually just did it for fun because of the discounts on virtual training days and I thought why not, certification looks good.
Spent half of the virtual day course not listening but you have to log in for the exam discount. Around 4h or so in total watching John Savills content and some of the MS resource sites.
Exam questions were often not directly related to all the stuff talked in the courses so some kinda surprised me. Also I only spent like 25min in total going through them twice, much faster than I thought it was gonna be.
Savills content is gold though, a neat summary of the MS product system. MS resource sites are beneficial to go through as well.
Really doubt any of my future employers will actually take notice or care that much given I won’t go into the sysadmin industry but certification is certification right? And it was free 🙂
Now I just need to figure out how to actually get a pdf of the certificate/badge lol

Hello! Apologies if this breaks any rules, but I'm out of my depth and at my wit's end. I've been trying to restore a "contained database" from a bacpac file I received from a client who was on a service backed by Azure. I actually received two of them. The one made in February loads without issue, but the more recent one made in May raises and error about collation conflicts between "Latin1_General_100_CI_AS_KS_WS_SC" and "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS". I don't understand why one works but not other. I tried repacking the bacpac file to use Latin1_General_100_CI_AS_KS_WS_SC, which lead down a rabbit hole of modifying the model.xml which didn't result in any meaningful insight. I'm a complete novice when it comes to MSSQL, so any guidance would be appreciated. Based on this post, I guess this expected behavior. Their solution seems simple, but I'm not entirely sure how to implement the solution they suggested, or if it truly applies to my scenario. For reference, this is the error I'm getting. I have provisioned my SQL server and database and can see it in ADS, but I get the stated error above. When I reopen the program, it says I need to "refresh the credentials for this account", but then I get the same thing. There's exactly one result for the error on Google, and it just links to a GitHub page that says the issue was fixed. Any ideas? I am trying to use the Azure Active Directory login, and though my laptop is connected to my organization account, I am not using the organizational account as my Windows login but rather my personal one. Edit: I waited a bit then found that it was giving me the error "Connection was denied since Deny Public Network Access is set to Yes" when I connected with a different network. I enabled public network access based on firewall rules. In this past week I both initiated and completed my studies for the Microsoft Certified Azure Administrator Associate certification culminating in sitting for the Az-104 exam. I came across this subreddit and used the highly recommended resources of both John Saville's azure masterclass and Scot Duffy's udemy course. I believe both of these resources managed to adequately (and in Saville's case, exceptionally) cover the concepts required. I feel like I completed them with the understanding of what everything was, what it was used for, and how to, broadly speaking, implement it (i set up an azure account and set up/tore down resources along with what i was learning about, but some things werent really feasible). However, when it came down to take the practice exams (scott duffy's and tutorial dojo's both) i found that the exam didnt really test on that knowledge. The vast majority of questions came down to gotcha style questions of "did you memorize that you need a standard sku public ip for a standard sku load balancer" type things. in effect, it felt like a lot of the tested material was "did you memorize this easily looked up knowledge" as opposed to "do you have a core understanding of the principles involved". i cannot imagine in any real scenario involving infrastructure planning that an individual is require to know, off hand, these minute nitpicking details. and even if they did, id still want them double checked? i suppose my point is, i feel the test isnt really a good measure of understanding the material, and im a bit disappointed. has anyone else had this experience/feeling? We are seeing everyone’s home private networks saved and shared through out all of our laptops. I can’t for the life of me figure out how to turn off Network Sharing in Azure. This is about the only other place I can think of that would share everyone’s home networks with all laptops. I know there is an option or something in there. ASP.NET app. I've been trying and trying and facing numerous issues with all the different methods. I use Azure Gov Cloud, so things are a little different. When I connect from local debug, and use Azure Interactive Authentication, that's the only way I can get it to work. Obviously not good for a headless server. So I used the managed identity tutorial and now I get the error " Login failed for user '<token-identified principal>'. Incorrect or invalid token. We have some servers that are gone. They have been backed up using the recovery agent into Azure. We no longer need these backed up instances and would like to delete them. However, when attempting a delete, we get the error as follows ServiceContainerNotEmptyWithBackendMessage The server cannot be unregistered as the security features setting is enabled for hybrid backups and there are associated backup items in active or soft delete state. Please disable the security features setting of the vault, perform stop protection and delete data for all the backup items and then trigger unregistration. Unfortunately, these instructions are impossible to follow as "Enable Always-on soft delete" has been enabled, thus preventing the disabling of security features and soft delete for hybrid workloads and making the deletion of these backed up instances impossible. Hi there, with the PowerShell AzureAD and MSOL modules being deprecated, my company who manages other tenants started a migration to conditional on test tenants. We now realize that the licensing is what is holding us back as most of our tenants are locked in with 1 year licensing terms and would be a pain to change licensing to be compliant. To provide more context, I have built scripts to basically do the job of conditional access. I would like to implement something that is not going to get depreciated for the foreseeable future that does not include licensing for each user. I have a few questions that would be helpful for myself and possibly other admins: Is Azure MFA (the page that you can get to by going to Azure AD -> Users -> Per-user MFA) going away? I saw in places that it might be deprecating but very unsure. If this is not being deprecated, is there any cmdlets using MgGraph to set strongauthenticationmethods or simalar to 'Enforced'? Are there any 3rd party services for Azure to manage MFA that does not include using conditional access? If the worst come, is there any way to include a custom app into Azure to handle MFA? I know it would be alot to build but would be worth it in the long run. Any place to start researching on this would be great. Hi azure community, I have a question, is there a way to implement SSPR (Self Services Password Reset) on Azure AD DS join devices on the windows login screen? I'm looking for a way to do that, but the only documentation I found there is this only work with hybrid and Azure AD. I know that you cannot use AD Connect on Azure AD DS, due you don't have access to the DC and also you don't have Domain admin access. If this is not possible, Is there a way to allow the user open the sspr web portal from the Windows login screen?
