Ich schneide Videos eher hobbymäßig. Kein aufwendiges Color Grading, keine schweren 3D-Effekte. Hauptsächlich Schnitte, Musik, Zooms und Texte per Keyframes bewegen. Ich habe oft 2-3 stündiges Rohmaterial. Das Gameplay und die Facecam laufen parallel als zwei 4K Spuren im Schnitt. Das MacBook nimmt über OBS das Gameplay 2-3 Stunden auf. Ich schwanke jetzt extrem zwischen dem MacBook Air und dem MacBook Pro. Beim Arbeitsspeicher tendiere ich fest zu 24 GB RAM. Reicht der normale M5 Chip für das flüssige Abspielen von zwei 4K Spuren in der Timeline aus, wenn kein Color Grading im Spiel ist? Da das MacBook Air keinen Lüfter hat, wird das ein Problem, wenn ich damit 2-3 Stunden am Stück Gameplay via OBS aufnehme oder wird der Laptop dann zu heiß und drosselt die Leistung extrem? I’m still within my return window and would love some real-world advice from people who’ve actually used these machines. I had two options at almost the same price: MacBook Pro M5 14” – 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD MacBook Air M5 – 24GB RAM / 512GB SSD I ended up buying the 14-inch MacBook Pro M5 16GB, mainly because I genuinely wanted the Pro. I previously had an M3 Air, and another Air felt too similar, whereas the Pro felt like an actual upgrade (better display, speakers, thermals, etc.). Now I’m second-guessing myself because of the RAM. Part of me wonders whether 24GB would be the smarter long-term choice. My use cases: Computer Science degree (including AI-related modules) VS Code Web development Running a Windows VM occasionally Freelance video editing Building AI automation projects/agency on the side Multitasking A few things I’ve noticed: I tested a Windows VM and assigned around 6GB RAM to it. With the VM running, YouTube, Safari, WhatsApp, etc., memory usage was around 14GB and swap was still 0. The machine feels fast and I’m genuinely happy with it. My question is: Would you keep the 14” M5 Pro with 16GB, or return it for the M5 Air with 24GB? I’m especially interested in: Real-world experiences from developers, CS students, and video editors. Whether 16GB is likely to feel limiting over the next 4–6 years. Whether the Pro’s better cooling, display, speakers, and overall experience outweigh the extra 8GB RAM. The work I plan to do is 4K Video editing (personal projects) as well as photography (Lightroom for example). Cost is something I want to keep in mind. I was thinking of getting a maxed out M5 Macbook Air....BUT I really do like the larger trackpad, the better screen, and the better speakers on the Macbook Pro. So, if I were to get a Macbook Pro for the same price of $2,100 (maxed out Air), I would go with the following specs: 2Tb, 16 Gb of ram, M5 chip. But if the performance of the M5 Pro chips are better, I will absolutely save money for it and wait a little longer. I am trying to go a little future proof with the machine as well. If there's a significant difference between chips, let me know. I heard that the M5 is basically the same as the M1 Max chip on the M1 MBP's which is insane if that's the case. EDIT: Important to note, I do have an M4 Mac Mini since it was super cheap for me ($300 with a gift card) but I want a portable machine. Bought it a month ago (May 2026), Battery Health is 100%. Suddenly switched off when battery was 6-7%. Another thing that I noticed since the beginning was during charging, going from 99 to 100% takes up a lot of time, and discharging from 100 to 99 takes up a lot of time as well. I’ve been working off a 21” iMac for the last six years and am transitioning to a 2026 MacBook Pro M5. My head is spinning after doing monitor research and trying to find one that would be suitable.
