Which one is better to live in, Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
Do you feel like a big city slicker or a small town girl? Edmonton or Calgary – which one is better to live in? Both cities have their pros and cons, but when it comes down to it, we think Calgary takes the cake. Read on to find out why!
Calgary and Edmonton are the 2 biggest cities in Alberta, Canada. The question is which one is better to live in, Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
It is difficult to say which city is better to live in, as it ultimately depends on an individual’s personal preferences and priorities. Both Calgary and Edmonton have their own unique features and attractions, and which city is better for you will depend on what you are looking for in a place to live.
Here are some factors to consider when deciding between Calgary and Edmonton:
-
Location: Calgary is located in southern Alberta, near the Rocky Mountains, while Edmonton is located in central Alberta. This can be a factor to consider if you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing, or if you prefer a more urban environment.
-
Cost of living: Both Calgary and Edmonton have a relatively low cost of living compared to other major cities in Canada. However, Calgary tends to be more expensive than Edmonton, particularly in terms of housing costs.
-
Employment: Both cities have strong economies and a diverse range of industries, including oil and gas, healthcare, and technology. Unemployment rates in both cities are generally low.
-
Climate: Calgary and Edmonton both have cold winters and warm summers, with Calgary generally experiencing cooler temperatures and more snowfall.
Ultimately, the decision of which city is better to live in will depend on your personal circumstances and what you are looking for in a place to call home. It may be helpful to research and compare the two cities in more detail to determine which one is a better fit for you.
What are the pros and cons of Calgary vs Edmonton.
As someone who has lived in both cities for more than 3 years and is still living in Calgary:
- Weather: you have more sunshine and less harsh winter in Calgary with occasional positive temperature in the middle of the winter because of the Chinook winds: Calgary wins
- Cost of life: Edmonton rent, home ownership, food, clothing is slightly cheaper than same items in Calgary: Edmonton wins
- Job Opportunities: more blue collar jobs in Edmonton, more white collar jobs in Calgary: tie
- Education: Edmonton has one of the top university in Canada called University of Alberta. University of Calgary has a first class business school called Hayskane school of business. Edmonton wins.
- City’s architecture: Calgary seems newer, nicely architected and just more beautiful to me by far: Calgary wins
- People: just the same to me, no difference: tie
- Size and population: Calgary (1.3 million people, 825 km2) is larger and have more people than Edmonton (1 million people, 684 km2): I won’t call this a win
- Mountains and lakes : Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Jasper National Park, Waterton Lakes National Park, are all closer to Calgary than Edmonton. Calgary is 1 hour from Banff, and day trips to the mountains are very common. Edmonton is 4 hours from Jasper, and trips to the mountains are more of a long weekend activity: Calgary Wins
- Summer festivities: Both cities have great and similar festivals, but Calgary hosts the greatest western festival on earth in July called the Stampede. Sylvan Lake is halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. Calgary wins.
- Sunshine: Calgary has way more sunshine that Edmonton. In fact, Calgary is amongst the top city with sunshine exposure in the entire country. Sunshine is happiness. Calgary wins.
- Politics: Both cities are economically conservative. Edmonton is a little bit more socially liberal than Calgary. Who cares? Tie.

- Downton: See Calgary Downtown inRealTimeNow.com. See Edmonton inRealTimeNow.com They are both vibrant and Nice: Tie
- Cleanliness: Calgary is one of the cleanness cities in the world. I am in awe myself whenever I walk downtown and in my neighbourhood of Walden. Calgary wins by far.
- Festivals: Calgary Stampede is unique and a must see in North America. Interstellar Rodeo Festival , Fringe, Jazz Fest, Folk Fest in Edmonton: Calgary wins.
- Public Transit: Calgary C-Train has 3 lines and covers all 4 quadrants of the city(NW, SW,SE,NE) with multiple park and rides location at various C-Train stations. There are buses in almost every neighborhoods in Calgary connecting you to the nearest C-Train station. Edmonton Transit Services (ETS) provides service on buses and light-rail transit within the City of Edmonton limits, in addition to Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, Beaumont, and the Edmonton Garrison at Namao. It also provides connections to suburban transit services. Calgary Wins.
With all that in mind, I’ll choose Calgary any day.

Pretty much what the title says. How do people afford to have a decent quality of life in this city?? In Alberta in general (ik cost of living is low overall here relative to other provinces, but I'm just asking about AB because I live here). I've budgeted and budgeted but the best I can do is break even and I'm hoping and praying to find a job that pays at least $18 an hour even though I have a bachelor's. I drive a ton for work and while I’ve been doing it forever, I’ve also had to drive through some of the worst weather. What are some apps or websites that you can use to check road safety? Is it pretty much just AMA road reports? Is there a radio station that covers current traffic reports specifically QE2 to Edmonton? Pardon my ignorance, I’ve never really cared before. I have a family now and just want to be a little more cautious. submitted by /u/ButeosDolichovespula [link] [comments]

- Seeking 2 Models for Hairstyling Exams (Feb 16 + 17)by /u/ProfFlitwicksDickPic (Stories from in and about Edmonton) on February 8, 2023 at 2:10 am
Hello! I'm looking for two models for my hairstyling program. I'm in my final classroom portion of my program, and I would be using these models for evaluations—these would be occurring on the 16th and 17th of February, and would be completely free. Model 1 (February 16) - Half Day - Shorter hair (i.e., ideally not longer than chin/bob length) - Cut/Colour/Style Basically, this would be a 1-3pm (will confirm times closer to the date) process wherein I would be cutting, colouring, and styling your hair; while I'm slightly limited to what we can do (due to time constraints), we can plan out something and discuss what our options are! Ideally, you'd have shorter hair. Model 2 (February 17) - Full Day - Shoulder length hair (willing to allow it to be cut shorter) - Comfortable with being photographed - Comfortable with giving me full creative control This would be a full day process wherein I would execute my personal artistic vision of an editorial style (basically I would do something creative and more high concept with your hair). This would involve cutting, colouring, and styling per my vision; and then there would be a photoshoot after. For this, ideally you would be comfortable with allowing me to do whatever I want to your hair* along with being photographed after. Ideally you'd be blonde or have lighter hair that is about shoulder length. I may need to do some prep work with your hair prior to the 17th, however, that would also be completely free. *I would be able to modify it slightly afterwards if desired (e.g., cut shorter, etc.) Feel free to message me if you'd be interested in any of these! I'd really appreciate your help :)) submitted by /u/ProfFlitwicksDickPic [link] [comments]

- Affordable Mental Health Help?by /u/Apprehensivebabe2409 (Calgary: Onward) on February 8, 2023 at 12:04 am
sorry if this is a weird post lol. I (21) have really been struggling with my mental health recently. Shit has really hit the fan in the past few months and it has become concerning to me how terrible my mental health episodes are. I won’t get to into it, but I’m genuinely concerned about my ability to keep myself safe and healthy. I am also broke- I have no extra money. I’m going to start looking for another job, but I reasonably cannot afford therapy or medication in the next couple of months, which is a long time to be feeling this way without any support. I’m going to try and find a doctor and see if I can get in with a psychiatrist but I’ve heard the waitlist is incredibly long for that, and I’m also not 100% sure that’s free. Does anyone have any recommendations for helpful mental health options in Calgary that won’t cost an arm and a leg? I just feel like I am at the end of my rope and need help now. I know some people will recommend going to the hospital, but I was admitted as a teenager and it was a horrible experience. Also, being admitted to the hospital would make my financial situation a lot worse, which would make my mental health worse too. Access to a psychiatrist is what I need right now most I think. I’ve been diagnosed with anxiety and depression but I have the sneaking suspicion that I have something else going on with my brain because I have some very severe things going on. But therapy or just some sort of support at all would help so much. Please let me know if anyone has any recommendations, even if it’s just online therapy that isn’t awful or something. submitted by /u/Apprehensivebabe2409 [link] [comments]
- Ice/water buildup on sidewalk, not draining to drainby /u/winnipeggremlin (Calgary: Onward) on February 7, 2023 at 11:15 pm
I have no idea if anyone has been in a similar situation. I'm in an older 1960s neighbourhood. Every year we go through freeze/thaw and the sidewalk infront of our house is an ice slick. It's basically because where the drain is, is uphill from our house. I think overtime the grade settled being an older neighbourhood. Is this something 311 can help fix? I know snow/ice removal is up to the homeowner and we are out every year for hours chopping the ice. submitted by /u/winnipeggremlin [link] [comments]
- Looking for some people who want to play D&Dby /u/ASuspiciousSponge (Stories from in and about Edmonton) on February 7, 2023 at 11:04 pm
Hello! Im looking for players for an upcoming D&D game I'm looking to run. So, let's jump right into the important information. Where? The game will be a hybrid of both online and offline, with the group meeting once or twice a month at the Hexagon Board Game Cafe or similar cafe/game store and the rest of the games being online using Discord and Owlbear Rodeo When? Every Sunday in the afternoon or evening, I'm thinking of starting around 1 or 2 pm, but that is subject to change depending on the group. Who? Both experienced and new players are welcome at my table. How To Get In? Message me or send me a chat with a small introduction, including your name, age, pronouns, and experience level. What Are We Playing? I'll be running a modified Descent into Avernus with a pinch of Acquisitions Incorporated thrown in for fun. The game will be a bit more role-play focused. So keep that in mind. About Your DM: For now, you can call me Sponge, I'm a 20 y/o gal. I'm rather inexperienced at DMing games, but I'm excited to try. I've run one game and several one-shots, so hopefully, this should go well. But if it does crash and burn, I can assure you I'll try to make it as fun as possible. I've been playing for about two years now. I love baking and making things unnecessarily complicated. I hope to hear from you soon! submitted by /u/ASuspiciousSponge [link] [comments]

I am curious to see if others had any experience with travel agents since this is literally the first time in my life I have even attempted to use one. We are looking for a fairly last minute flight to India (2.5 Weeks out) for a family member, searching normal ways online we get a price. We were told about a travel agency in the NE and that they are usually cheaper than online tools. Went there last night and they beat all the online tools by about $350. They told me they can do this for places like India, Pakistan, Egypt, Isreal, Bangladesh etc most of the time but not Europe, USA. Is there a way for me to use their tools at home, or know a way to search better? Or do they just have access to the less common places at better rates somehow? submitted by /u/DDP200 [link] [comments]

I recently moved here and this is my first time experiencing Alberta winter. I am trying to acertin if this was a mild winter compared to other year's or if the fear mongering from the media makes it worse than it really is. When I was looking for a place in Alberta all anyone could ever talk about was the bad winter. I hear the condescending remarks when I tell out of province coworkers I live here now. Even when the temperatures dipped to - negative double digits, I was still able to move around with some good winter tires. What's your take, do you think this a milder winter compared to previous years? submitted by /u/mprogams [link] [comments]
- Renfrew Chrysler "rent subsidy" Updateby /u/lavender812 (Calgary: Onward) on February 7, 2023 at 2:59 pm
Many of you are probably familiar with the car dealership Renfrew Chrysler mailing out "trade in your car offers" titled as a "rent subsidy." Here is the original thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/assholedesign/comments/10sywzg/local_car_dealership_disguises_their/ Although no one was asked, many people did leave Google reviews on Renfrew Chrysler with low star ratings complaining about this advertising. I did this because I felt the rent subsidy was unethical and misleading. As a result of these 30+ reviews, their rating dropped from 4.2 to 4.1. This morning Google emailed me and my 1 star review had 35 upvotes. However, their overall rating was back up to 4.2/5 - which I thought was strange as it had only been a few days so I did some investigation. I can still see my review if I am logged in to my Google account, but if you re-visit the review page in an incognito browser, all of the negative reviews related to the rent subsidy direct mail campaign have been taken down by Google. This makes me even more frustrated as it appears Renfrew Chrysler has few consequences for engaging in such a deceptive marketing campaign. submitted by /u/lavender812 [link] [comments]

Over the last couple of years, I’ve had a handful of similar situations- not once have I had an issue with an ambulance showing up in a timely fashion (especially considering an anaphylactic episode can be deadly in seconds, if not minutes)… I get that maybe I have good luck with ambulance response time and that it isn’t always the case, but I just wanted to put a positive comment out there about the EMS/fire fighters that respond to our 911 calls. submitted by /u/EllaBelle1983 [link] [comments]
