Some of the major players in the video gaming industry are Tencent, Sony and Apple, each generating billions of dollars in revenue every year, making them some of the most successful public companies in terms of gaming revenue. Sony’s PlayStation 4 is the bestseller among current generation consoles and, in 2020, the unit sales of the PlayStation 4 reached more than 112 million units.
While 24 percent don’t play video games at all, almost 18 percent spend more than six hours per week playing video games. Some of the favorite video game genres in 2020 included action, strategy, and action-adventure. The most popular store for hard copy video games was GameStop, while Amazon was the most popular store for digital/online video game purchases.

League of Legends in a multiplayer online game similar to Mobile Legends.
As in other multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games, each player in League of Legends controls a character (“champion”) with a set of unique abilities. Most games involve two teams of five players, with each player using a different champion.

Fortnite is distributed as three different game modes, using the same engine; each has similar graphics, art assets, and game mechanics.
- Fortnite: Save the World is a player-versus-environment cooperative game, with four players collaborating towards a common objective on various missions. The game is set after a fluke storm appears across Earth, causing 98% of the population to disappear, and the survivors to be attacked by zombie-like “husks”. The players take the role of commanders of home base shelters, collecting resources, saving survivors, and defending equipment that helps to either collect data on the storm or to push back the storm. From missions, players are awarded a number of in-game items, which include hero characters, weapon and trap schematics, and survivors, all of which can be leveled up through gained experience to improve their attributes.
- Fortnite Battle Royale is a player-versus-player game for up to 100 players, allowing one to play alone, in a duo, or in a squad (usually consisting of three or four players). Weaponless players airdrop from a “Battle Bus” that crosses the game’s map. When they land, they must scavenge for weapons, items, resources, and even vehicles while trying to stay alive and to attack and eliminate other players. Over the course of a round, the safe area of the map shrinks down in size due to an incoming toxic storm; players outside that threshold take damage and can be eliminated if they fail to quickly evacuate. This forces remaining players into tighter spaces and encourages player encounters. The last player, duo, or squad remaining is the winner.
- Fortnite Creative is a sandbox game mode, similar to Minecraft in that players are given complete freedom to spawn everything that is within the game on an island, and can create games such as battle arenas, race courses, platforming challenges, and more.
Players can use their pickaxe to knock down existing structures on the map to collect basic resources that are wood, brick, and metal. Subsequently, in all modes, the player can use these materials to build fortifications, such as walls, floors, and stairs. Such fortification pieces can be edited to add things like windows or doors. The materials used have different durability properties and can be updated to stronger variants using more materials of the same type. Within Save the World this enables players to create defensive fortifications around an objective or trap-filled tunnels to lure husks through. In Battle Royale, this provides the means to quickly traverse the map, protect oneself from enemy fire, or to delay an advancing foe. Players are encouraged to be very inventive in designing their fortifications in Creative.
While Battle Royal and Creative are free-to-play, Save the World is pay-to-play. The games are monetized through the use of V-Bucks, in-game currency that can be purchased with real-world funds, but also earned through completing missions and other achievements in Save the World. V-Bucks in Save the World can be used to buy loot boxes, in the form of piñatas shaped like llamas, to gain a random selection of items. In Battle Royale, V-Bucks can be used to buy cosmetic items like character models or the like, or can also be used to purchase the game’s battle pass, a tiered progression of customization rewards for gaining experience and completing certain objectives during the course of a Battle Royale season.

The supreme game: Call of Duty®: Warzone
Call of Duty: Warzone, the only free game in the Call of Duty series, is a multiplayer online shooter game.
Warzone features two primary game modes: Battle Royale and Plunder. It is the second main battle royale installment in the Call of Duty franchise, following the “Blackout” mode of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (2018). Warzone differs from Black Ops 4 by reducing reliance on equipable gadgets and instead encouraging the accumulation of a new in-game currency called Cash.
Warzone supports up to 150 players in a single match, which exceeds the typical size of 100 players seen in other battle royale titles. Some limited-time modes support 200 players.
The Battle Royale mode is similar to other titles in the genre where players compete in a continuously shrinking map to be the last player remaining. Players parachute onto a large game map, where they encounter other players. As the game progresses and players are eliminated, the playable area shrinks forcing the remaining players into tighter spaces. In Warzone, the non-playable areas become contaminated with a green gas that depletes health and eventually kills the player if they do not return to the safe playable area.
Unlike other titles, Warzone introduces a new respawn mechanic, a greater emphasis on vehicles, and a new in-game currency mechanic. Parachuting is unrestricted, with the player being allowed to open and cut their parachute an unlimited number of times while in air. At launch, the game supported trios (squads of up to three players) with an option to disable squad filling. Infinity Ward has mentioned testing the number of squad members in future updates. Four-player squads and Solo BR modes were added in following updates, while Duos was added near the end of Season 3.
Character death in Battle Royale does not necessarily translate to player defeat like in other titles. Instead, the mode offers a respawn mechanic which players can take advantage of in various ways. Players who are killed are transported to the “Gulag”, where they engage in one-on-one combat with another defeated player, with both players being given the same weaponry. The guns that the players receive have little or no attachments. Players may only enter the gulag after their first death in a match. The winner of this combat is respawned into the game. Other methods of respawn are available using the in-game currency system. Players may use the in-game currency to purchase respawn tokens for other players should they not be revived by the Gulag mechanic.
In the Plunder mode teams have to search for stacks of Cash scattered around the map to accumulate $1 million. Once found, the game goes into overtime, multiplying all Cash sums by 1.5. The team who has gathered the most money when the clock runs out is declared the winner. Players respawn automatically in this gamemode.
In addition to Battle Royale and Plunder, several limited-time modes have been introduced throughout the course of the game’s life cycle:
- BR Buy Backs (originally called BR Stimulus) is a variation of Battle Royale in which players automatically respawn upon death if they have sufficient money, and the Gulag is disabled.
- Blood Money is a variation of Plunder in which players gain more cash rewards from completing contracts and performing “finishing moves” (execution kills) on other players.
- Warzone Rumble is a 50v50 deathmatch type game mode taking place in cut-off sections of the main Verdansk map.
- Mini Royale is a 50-player mode in which players drop within a smaller circle than normal Battle Royale modes, for more squad engagements.
- Juggernaut Royale features the Juggernaut killstreak dropping in random places throughout the map. Up to three Juggernauts can be active at once in the map. Once a Juggernaut is killed, another Juggernaut care package will spawn in.
- Armored Royale features squads spawning in with armored trucks, which players can upgrade to be more powerful over time. Unlike normal modes, players can continue to respawn as long as their squad’s truck is intact.

Slither io is a website based online game where you play as a worm/ snake (I’m not sure) and have to grow bigger by eating the glowing stuff and killing other players and eating their points. You get killed if your head bumps into another player’s body.
Now this is just my view but I think it’s the permadeath mechanic.
Imagine all your precious character stats that you’ve painstakingly built up only for it to be gone.

With the increase of Cloud-Gaming, mobile has become a very valuable option for on the go gaming. With services like Google Stadia, GeForce Now, PlayStation Now, etc. you have a very big variety so you can play all the games you want on that small screen of your phone. Also, 5G will make this process even smoother.
In conclusion, mobile gaming looks to be a very promising field for the future. Even though it might be able to replace PC and console gaming its getting close to it. I can’t say anything for sure, but a bright future lies ahead and we can only wait and see how this will turn out. With the major players that are coming on this market, only good things can happen.

Meta-Gaming is when you make in-game decisions based on out-of-game knowledge. This is mostly a bad thing.
Let’s consider several situations to illustrate the point.
Finding a Trap:
- The Metagamer goes right to where the trap is located and spams “search” checks until he “finds” it, because he’s played this module before and remembers the trap.
- The regular player searches the room once, fails, and blithely walks into a trap. Because while he knows it’s there, his character does not.
Do you see how one made a decision based on what he knew, possibly ruined a possible good storytelling moment, and cheated. The other player was able to separate what he knew from what his character knew, and made a decision based on character knowledge only. Sure, he just got lanced by a foot-spike, but everyone is in the moment, committed to the story.
- The Metagamer plans an L-shaped ambush per Chapter 3–17 b. (2), FM7–8 Infantry Rifle Platoon and Squad, adjusted to account for swords, spears, and bows instead of rifles, machineguns, and grenades.
- The regular gamer remembers his character barely knows which end of a sword to hold, and either lets the fighter plan the ambush, or just waits in the bushes by the trail for the target to get close.
I’ve been guilty of this several times. In my last game, I was literally planning an ambush for some hobgoblins before cutting myself off. “Nope, Katrina doesn’t know any of this,” and shut up.

In my last game, we fought a midlin-small red dragon. As it happened, Katrina had found a ring of fire resistance. Yay! And while I know that Red Dragons do not have a special vulnerability to cold, she assumed they did, and kept peppering it with Ray of Frost. And while it didn’t do extra damage, she did manage to distract it long enough for some teammates to get behind it, especially when it blasted her with fire and she just stood there and took it.
- When it’s time to level up, the Metagamer makes decisions based on mechanical advantage. He may multiclass or pick up feats based on what he thinks the next adventure will be, or just try to get the biggest ACC, AC, Dam, or whatever he can get. He may multiclass his fighter into a Paladin to pick up Smite, because he thinks they’ll be dealing with undead soon.
- The regular player levels up based on what makes the most sense for the character. He may also muticlass his fighter into a Paladin, but it’s because he found religion.
Now, for a counter-example. I was in a sci-fi game once, and our ship was damaged. The engines were non-responsive, but Engineering reported they were fully functional. I was playing the Engineer. I deduced that a micro-meteor hit had damaged the control lines, and that the cutout had failed to automatically re-route them to the backups, which I then went to go do manually.
I’m an electronics technician by trade, and I know a bit about naval architecture, and it since I was playing the Engineer, it was totally fine to use Murphy’s Player Knowledge for my Engineer Character. That was not bad metagaming.
Now, some forms of meta-gaming are worse than others. The leveling one doesn’t bother me too much. But other kinds can ruin other player’s fun, and that’s a problem. It cheats people out of the experience, and is goddamn frustrating as a GM.

Earthbound is probably one of the single most important video games to ever release. If you’re at all interested in the indie scene, you definitely know about Lisa, Omori, and especially Undertale, all of which wear their Earthbound influence on their sleeve. Now I actually haven’t played a ton of Omori and have yet to experience Lisa, but Undertale is one of my personal favorite games of all time (and one I’ll probably make another essay about one day) and when I learned that the guy who made one of the most impactful games I had played got his influence from Earthbound, I knew I had to try it out too. My first experience with Earthbound was rough. I wasn’t very well-versed in turn-based JRPGs and the opening hours of Earthbound are brutal. I only got past the first dungeon before deciding maybe the game just hadn’t aged well and wasn’t for me. It was just too hard. I picked it back up a few years later and did have a better time. I liked the world, characters, and thought the battle system had some solid ideas. I still wasn’t great at these games though, so I put it down about halfway in, as I just hit a wall where I felt like I couldn’t proceed. Another few years later, I played Persona 5 for the first time and that game would go on to be my favorite game of all time. When I finished it, I wanted more of it, so I got Persona 4 to play on the PS2 at my dads house (also a really damn good game) and while I was at my mom’s, I decided I was going to see Earthbound through. And I did it. I got to the end and had a blast with it. However, it wouldn’t be until the next year that I would show off Earthbound to a friend who had never heard of it, and once the sun rose over Onett and I had my first encounter with the photographer, I just had this feeling hit me of “holy shit this is one of my favorite games ever”. I’m opening with this story for good reason. I’ve done multiple “this game is one of the greatest ever made” posts before, but this is the first one where I’m tackling a game so close to my heart, so directly interlinked to who I am as a person and what I love about gaming. Earthbound is my 3rd favorite game ever made, and amongst that top 3, I think there’s a good argument to be made that in terms of objective quality, it is the best one. It is an unquestionable masterpiece. With how many games have taken direct inspiration, it’s crazy how there’s nothing else quite like it. It is a perfect example of what games can be, but are often to scared to try. I love this game and I want to talk about why. The premise of Earthbound is simple. You are a boy named Ness, who is tasked with saving the world alongside three friends to stop the cosmic evil, Giygas. In terms of actual plot, the game never actually develops at all from there. I’ve heard it thrown at the game as a criticism that Earthbound doesn’t really have a plot, but more a series of smaller moments. While this is certainly true, it’s actually what I love about the game. Each area you visit has multiple different storylines going on, all of which you need to resolve to move forward. Early in the game, you will take down a gang at the local arcade, help a famous band through numerous financial troubles, save a town from zombies, and uncover the secret behind a mysterious cult. These plot lines don’t go anywhere beyond their towns or contribute to an overall plot, but these smaller experiences are ultimately what stick with you. And I’m saving some of the best ones out for you to discover. That isn’t to say though that there’s no progression to the story. There are recurring elements, characters, and themes. Pokey is probably the definitive example of this. I could write a whole essay on Pokey alone, especially considering Mother 3 (Earthbound’s sequel), but all I’ll say for now is that it’s super fun seeing Pokey transform from your annoying next-door neighbor to legitimate threat over the course of the game, and having the understanding from early game events to paint an ultimately tragic picture of a broken kid. That's honestly what I want to talk about more than Earthbound's actual plot; the game's themes and overall tone. Earthbound is a strange game. It isn't afraid to dive deep into surreal themes or imagery and some of the things that happen simply do not make a lot of sense. Ness will take a sip of coffee and then hallucinate while reflecting on the journey so far. You will spend the night at a hotel just to be dragged by zombies into a hole deep underground. However, this is a game that is also firmly set in American suburbia. Not only was this incredibly novel at the time, with JRPGs mostly aiming for high fantasy, but it allowed Shigesato Itoi (the game's main creative force) to inject every aspect of the game with biting social commentary. You are playing as an innocent kid within a seedy, grimy depiction of America. If I had one criticism of the game, it would just be that this commentary only really exists in the first half of the game, as the second dives deeper into pure fantasy and surrealism, but it also makes sense why it's this way. The entire stretch from Onett through Fourside is charming, nostalgic, calming, and oddly grounded considering some of the wild shit that happens. The game always reminds you of the family waiting back at home for you. Ness will actually get homesick and not participate in battles if he doesn't call his mother periodically and he has to call his dad to save the game. It gives the whole adventure a feel of playing in your friend's back yard as kids after school and the game's more surrealist elements are just a child's imagination. If there is any singular reason why you should play this game, it is for all the memories made along the way. So much happens in Earthbound, but all of it is unique and memorable. There is a creature named Tessie who I think about quite often, yet only shows up in the game once or twice. There's even a feature where a magical photographer will come down, take a picture of you, and then that final scrapbook is shown during the end credits. While I think the theme is stronger in Mother 3, I do think a central theme in all of Itoi's games is the idea that at its core, the world is weird and bizarre and wonderful and funny, and that, in turn, makes life all of those things. Earthbound is a game about the smaller, more mundane moments in our lives that ultimately combine into who we are and what our outlook on life is. I think that's why the way this game frames its story as smaller moments always resonated with me. It is worth saying though that while this game does get quite dark, this is ultimately a funny, charming adventure with just a touch of sadness and melancholy. This game doesn't dive quite into the harrowing depths that its sequel, Mother 3 does. However, there is a strong exception to this that I will discuss. The music in this game, composed by the legendary Hip Tanaka, is probably the best video game soundtrack out there. Easily one of, if not the best soundtrack to a Nintendo game. My personal favorite is a tie between the themes for Onett, Twoson, and Fourside. Okay. Let's talk about gameplay. Earthbound is a turn-based JRPG heavily inspired by Dragon Quest. However, there are a few things to make it stand out. The main thing Earthbound has is the rolling HP system. When a character gets hit, their health count will roll down to 0. At first, this just seems like a fun animation, but it's actually a gameplay mechanic. You see, let's say Ness has 200HP, but takes a hit that kills him. His health will start rolling down to 0, but if you can heal him or end the fight before the animation ends, you will actually save him. This means that while the game is turn-based, when shit goes bad and you have to now quickly pull shit together, it can feel like defusing a bomb. There's also the way items work in battle. Of your four main party members, Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo, Jeff is extremely unique. Unlike the other 3, Jeff cannot use PSI powers (basically the game's magic system). Instead, he can create his own weapons from scrap as well as use items in his inventory to do damage or cause status ailments. While every character can use items like this, you really want Jeff to be using them as he has weak damage and no PSI. The battle system overall is super fun. The enemies are all bizarre and unique in their own ways, especially later into the game, and the bosses can sometimes feel like a puzzle more than anything. The Hydra boss and the literal giant pile of vomit stick out the most to me. Outside of battle, the game retains its quirky edge, but these elements are a bit more divisive. Your characters will get heatstroke and slowly die just by walking through the desert, and the game's equivalent of "confusion" will occasionally cause the controls to rotate 90 degrees until you cure it. Talking to certain characters in one area of the game will just warp you to another area without reason. The way money works is also interesting. You get money for battle, but it's stored in an ATM which are at every store and hotel and can only be taken out there. If you fall in battle, you lose half the money you're carrying on you at the time, but money stored in the ATM is safe. Also if you fall in battle, it's a somewhat tedious grind to first check Ness in at the hotel, since he revives with 0 PP (needed to use PSI), and then check out all your friends from the hospital (which is expensive). I personally think this stuff is great. I understand why it can be annoying, but it adds so much character to the game. I'm an Animal Crossing fan. I'm used to basic things taking 3 more steps than what's really necessary just for the sake of charm. However, there is one big sticking point with the game. Inventory management. The amount of inventory you have is very small and it fills up fast. You can call your sister on the phone to send someone to store or pick up items, but this takes a while and even that space can technically run out. There's also a ton of items like rulers or protractors that do literally nothing but waste space. An easy fix for this (and one Mother 3 actually did) is to make it so key items don't use inventory space and that space is simply for basic, consumable items. Instead, half of Ness' inventory is filled with shit you can't get rid of, like the world map and his ATM card. At least this isn't Earthbound Beginnings (Mother 1 in Japan) where you have to go into Ness' inventory and pull out the card to access the ATM. There are also certain status effects that just suck, essentially taking that person out of the battle and due to the rolling HP system, items that bring party members back from death or petrification are rare. Also, just a tip. When you press A in the game to interact with something, a menu shows up with a ton of options, meaning you have to choose to "Talk" to people and "Check" objects. Just press the L button and it'll automatically jump to the "Talk" or "Check" option based on which is appropriate. Okay. Let's talk about Giygas. Spoilers ahead. The final boss with Giygas is the highlight of the game and easily its darkest moment. In the previous game, Giygas was basically just an alien mourning its mother figure, but now, Giygas is nothing short of a cosmic horror. He is formless and the few bits of dialogue he has paints the picture of a being who has grown so much in power, so much beyond what he used to be, that he can't even comprehend the fact he is in so much pain. It is a haunting final boss and in it's final form, it becomes a gameplay mechanic where all you can do is simply pray, resulting in one of the absolute best endings in gaming history. Okay. I've done a lot of talking about the game, and it hasn't exactly been the most coherent thing out there, and I feel like I haven't even scratched the surface of everything, but this is getting way too long and I want you to actually go out and play the game for yourself. However, I want to touch on the game's final moments, as it really drives the experience home. Once Giygas is defeated, you're free to simply explore the world and interact with everyone a final time. A good amount of the NPCs have new things to say. Once you're done with that, the game ends with a quiet goodbye to your friends who helped you along the way, and a comfortable dinner back at home. It's such a grounded, low-key way to end a game that gets so weird, especially at the end, and it's incredibly bittersweet. The final scrapbook at the end being the ultimate testament to how many memories you have made along the way. Earthbound is one of the absolute greatest games out there. I know this post has been incredibly long, but I had to leave so much on the table. If anything I have said about this game has inspired you to try it, the game is more accessible than it's ever been. If you currently have a Switch and Switch Online, congrats, you can play Earthbound right now at no extra cost. Just make sure you have the SNES game library downloaded. I would also look into emulating Mother 3 (considering it hasn't and will never be released in the West, but got a great fan translation) as that game is also incredible. I may prefer Earthbound, but only in the sense that Earthbound is my 3rd favorite game while Mother 3 is my 6th. I will probably have a post talking about that game at some point. My biggest gripe with sports games is that they always seem the same. Even if you wait and buy them once every 4 years the difference is pretty negligible. I think a big reason for that is because modern games take so long to make. Mortal Kombat 1 inspired me to scrap up a concept of a Star Wars Lightsaber dueling game. Some features would be: 1) You could call “Kameo” assist fighters like in MK1 who have blasters, tech, airstrike etc. to get an all encompassing Star Wars Fighting game that doesn’t feel/look imbalanced. 2) Each mainline fighter has different lightsaber forms that are selectable after choosing a character to call back to the various forms these Jedi/Sith have fought with. Think of the different versions of fighters in MKX. 3) Skins for both Mainline Fighters and Assist Fighters that encompass all of Legends and the Saga. 4) No “Fatalities” but perhaps stylish brutalities that are tame enough for Disney (Hands cut off, maybe a limb or two) 5) I am aware that there is a fan made Star Wars fighting game by a youtuber Last Jawa and it’s great, highly recommend! The title says it all, really. One of my biggest pet peeves in RPGs is misleading dialogue options. What I mean by that is your choices for dialogue don't match what your character actually says. I understand that writing out every option is a bit wordy and that most people don't want to read that much while playing a video game. The shortened version is supposed to convey the same tone as the character's actual dialogue, but there have been many times where, had I known what the actual dialogue would have been, I'd have likely chosen a different option. I have a ps5. My kiddo gets all excited when we go into the bonus room about “dada game” and the grabs the extra controller and tells me to “go”. I usually try to get in some time during her nap, and mom brings her in when she wakes up. Unfortunately, ive now started playing the Lies of P. So, that super doesnt work…. What are some games that I can digitally download so I can switch quick and play with her for a few minutes? I have a very niche type games I like to play so I cant say I’m so familiar with everything on the market. Games without any violence would be best. But I’d welcome suggestions of games of all types. My kiddo gets genuinely excited when she comes in and wants to do this thing with me! EDIT: I should have included her age. She is almost 2.
