I have seen multiple reviewers say they are holding off on reviewing Marathon because Bungie asked them to wait until later updates roll out. Honestly this is a terrible precedent and respectable critics should know better. Games should not be reviewed a month after release because they might get better. If a game is released and being sold, consumers have the right to know what critics think right now, based on the product that exists today. Reviews exist to help people make purchasing decisions and they should be objective and honest. Delaying reviews based on promises of future improvements undermines that entire purpose. Before someone jumps in with “reviews don’t matter”, clearly they do. There are professional reviewers, review embargoes, Metacritic scores, and publishers actively manage review timing, length, and content. If reviews did not matter, companies would not care when they come out. The fact that Bungie asked critics not to review the game yet is proof that reviews matter. Some people might not care about critic scores and that is fine. But many players clearly do and publishers absolutely do. Metacritic scores are routinely highlighted in earnings calls and internal meetings. What makes this especially frustrating is the double standard. Many games in the past were reviewed harshly for launch issues that were fixed quickly. Critics sometimes did not even wait for day one patches and judged games based on the version they played before release. They did not hold off then. Now suddenly we are supposed to wait because future content updates might make the game better. If the product was meant to include that content, the game should have launched with it. The job of a critic is to evaluate the product as objectively and independently as possible and tell the audience whether it is worth their time and money. The whole point is to act as a counterbalance to marketing and provide an expert opinion on the product. When critics start adjusting their review timing because a developer asked them to, that independence starts to look compromised. I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I feel like when they changed from skill trees to leveling the games lost that "special feel". Origins is a good game for example, but it's not gripping or interesting to me because of the leveling aspect. i always hop into early access games, hades, hades 2, no rest for the wicked, deep rock and many others. but never ever i got this feeling that the game is already in a way deeper phase than early access. sts2 needs some polishing etc, but imo is way closer to a complete game than any other Early access game i've ever played. i'd not be mad if this was released as 1.0 with some dev notes saying "from now on things will only get better". am i binging it? yea. was i hyped? ye. is it living the hype? Why I think Outer Wilds is the most beautiful game ever made I wanted to write a post to try and put down in words why Outer Wilds has such a profound effect on the people who play it. I completed the game a few weeks ago, and it's still stayed with me on an emotional level that I've NEVER had for any other game, book (except the Bourne Trilogy), film, or TV show (except maybe The Wire) before I think at it's heart, Outer Wilds does this because it shows you where you are It tells you how small you are in the vast vast universe. It reminds you that there are trillions of galaxies, all teeming with life, life that is and was, and that it is just as important as you. It shows the interconnection between all life, through time and space. It shows the miracle of communication, the joy of togetherness and the heartbreak of being alone For a game about a reptile flying a wooden spaceship in a tiny solar system, it sure is true The most important thing that I think sets this experience apart from anything else, is that it shows you the pure ecstatic beauty of life and the universe, but also reminds you that it ends. And instead of that being a sad thing, you are at peace with it. Every vain hope of saving the universe fades away in the end, and that should be sad, but it isn't. It's peaceful. You realise that everything ends eventually, through the extinction of the Nomai, and the death of the universe. You understand its sadness, learn to love everything that was, and then you accept its passing. Find peace with endings. Accept loss. In another thread I was reminiscing about how I'd usually immediately start firing upon allies as soon as launched in any of the many space combat sims of the '90-'00s just to see if anything actually happened. To my recollection, X-Wing, TIE Fighter, and the rest in that vein had no consequences other than removing an ally from the battle if you destroyed them. Most of the Wing Commander games, on the other hand, wouldn't let you get away with more than a few stray shots before your wingman called you a traitor and every former ally turned on you. I know if your carrier was destroyed you got a game over of you drifting endlessly through the void, though I can't remember if that happened if you destroyed it yourself. I usually blew up before I could get that far. Colony Wars was sort of the same, but your fighter had a built-in remote self-destruct that was activated by your commanders so you only had about a minute before you were done. In the first game, it was said that you were sent to an already harsh penal colony where even after the Earth Empire crushed the League of Free Worlds, you and everyone else were left to rot amid record death rates. Growing up my friends and I put absolutely insane hours on the original Baulder's Gate Dark Alliance 1 + 2. The first game was a classic and the sequel despite some issues and repetiviness built on the great foundation of the first game and included special class quests for each character that helped deepen their lore and made the character choices even more fun. What's worse about all this is that the end of DA2 see's a cliffhanger ending where a egyptian-esque God is ready his sail barge to depart for Baulders Gate lending to the idea that a end to the triology was planned but did not happen. I remember watching him play it as a kid. My mom wouldn't let me play it because it was too violent. But he would always let me play it if she was out as long as I didn't say anything about it. Up until that point I had only been allowed to play the likes of Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, and PAC-MAN World. All great games, but this was my first experience with a rated M game. So it's special for that reason. Still the only game in the series I have ever played. One thing I always liked about Middle-earth is how naturally it works as a world to explore. You can travel from the Shire through the wild, reach Rivendell, cross the Misty Mountains… then suddenly you’re somewhere completely different like Rohan or Gondor. It feels like a real place instead of a map with zones. Half the fun in a game like that would probably just be wandering around and seeing what you run into. Walking through a dark tunnel in the mountains… hearing something big moving somewhere deeper in the cave… then suddenly taking fire damage from something you definitely didn’t see yet. and your brain just panics for a second: “pass… not… you shall… wait—hold on.” Art by Abe Taraky. submitted by /u/Visible_Welder5613 [link] [comments]
