Players who are killed are transported to the “Gulag”, where they engage in one-on-one combat with another defeated player, with both players being given the same weaponry. The guns that the players receive have little or no attachments. Players may only enter the gulag after their first death in a match. The winner of this combat is respawned into the game. Other methods of respawn are available using the in-game currency system. Players may use the in-game currency to purchase respawn tokens for other players should they not be revived by the Gulag mechanic.

In the Plunder mode teams have to search for stacks of Cash scattered around the map to accumulate $1 million. Once found, the game goes into overtime, multiplying all Cash sums by 1.5. The team who has gathered the most money when the clock runs out is declared the winner. Players respawn automatically in this gamemode.

In addition to Battle Royale and Plunder, several limited-time modes have been introduced throughout the course of the game’s life cycle:

Let’s look at what the future has in store for mobile gaming. One of the main “problems” this industry has had was the lack of quality and high-end games. This is changing day by day now. 

Cloud Gaming

With the increase of Cloud-Gaming, mobile has become a very valuable option for on the go gaming. With services like Google Stadia, GeForce Now, PlayStation Now, etc. you have a very big variety so you can play all the games you want on that small screen of your phone. In conclusion, mobile gaming looks to be a very promising field for the future. Even though it might be able to replace PC and console gaming its getting close to it. I can’t say anything for sure, but a bright future lies ahead and we can only wait and see how this will turn out. With the major players that are coming on this market, only good things can happen.

Netflix for Video Games

The video game industry has (not so) quietly undergone a big number of changes: microtransactions, development costs, and competition.

The idea of a “Netflix for video games” is quite simple — a service that allows all people to play high-quality video games on any device through a subscription offering. It still remains uncertain how game streaming will shape up in the end, but reviewing the first attempts to create such a solution, we can identify some patterns.

The first name that looks like a potential winner of a future platform war is Microsoft. The company has been in the video games market for a long time with its Xbox game consoles (more than 17 years since the original Xbox was launched), which means it has enough experience and capabilities in the field. Microsoft was also the first to offer a comprehensive service for gaming on subscription, namely Xbox Game Pass, which gives access to more than 200 titles for a monthly fee. Regarding portfolio of games, it is interesting that Microsoft has acquired 7 game studios over the last year, suggesting the company is getting ready to create a ton of original content for its offering. What exactly is meta-gaming in Dungeons & Dragons? Is it bad or good? What are some examples?:

Meta-Gaming is when you make in-game decisions based on out-of-game knowledge. This is mostly a bad thing.

Let’s consider several situations to illustrate the point.

Finding a Trap:

  • The Metagamer goes right to where the trap is located and spams “search” checks until he “finds” it, because he’s played this module before and remembers the trap.
  • The regular player searches the room once, fails, and blithely walks into a trap. Because while he knows it’s there, his character does not.

Do you see how one made a decision based on what he knew, possibly ruined a possible good storytelling moment, and cheated. The other player was able to separate what he knew from what his character knew, and made a decision based on character knowledge only. Sure, he just got lanced by a foot-spike, but everyone is in the moment, committed to the story.

Fighting:

  • The Metagamer plans an L-shaped ambush per Chapter 3–17 b. (2), FM7–8 Infantry Rifle Platoon and Squad, adjusted to account for swords, spears, and bows instead of rifles, machineguns, and grenades.
  • The regular gamer remembers his character barely knows which end of a sword to hold, and either lets the fighter plan the ambush, or just waits in the bushes by the trail for the target to get close.

I’ve been guilty of this several times. In my last game, I was literally planning an ambush for some hobgoblins before cutting myself off. “Nope, Katrina doesn’t know any of this,” and shut up.

Monsters:

  • The Metagamer knows the weak-spot of the monster and slams it right off the bat, ruining what could have been an epic fight. He’s memorized the monster manual, and despite his character never before even hearing of this monster, he’s got it’s MO memorized.
  • The regular gamer may or may not know about the monster, but fights it as his character would, because his character doesn’t know that it’s vulnerable to, say, cold.

In my last game, we fought a midlin-small red dragon. As it happened, Katrina had found a ring of fire resistance. Yay! And while I know that Red Dragons do not have a special vulnerability to cold, she assumed they did, and kept peppering it with Ray of Frost. And while it didn’t do extra damage, she did manage to distract it long enough for some teammates to get behind it, especially when it blasted her with fire and she just stood there and took it.

Leveling:

  • When it’s time to level up, the Metagamer makes decisions based on mechanical advantage. He may multiclass or pick up feats based on what he thinks the next adventure will be, or just try to get the biggest ACC, AC, Dam, or whatever he can get. He may multiclass his fighter into a Paladin to pick up Smite, because he thinks they’ll be dealing with undead soon.
  • The regular player levels up based on what makes the most sense for the character. He may also muticlass his fighter into a Paladin, but it’s because he found religion.

Now, for a counter-example. I was in a sci-fi game once, and our ship was damaged. The engines were non-responsive, but Engineering reported they were fully functional. I was playing the Engineer. I deduced that a micro-meteor hit had damaged the control lines, and that the cutout had failed to automatically re-route them to the backups, which I then went to go do manually.

I’m an electronics technician by trade, and I know a bit about naval architecture, and it since I was playing the Engineer, it was totally fine to use Murphy’s Player Knowledge for my Engineer Character. That was not bad metagaming.

Now, some forms of meta-gaming are worse than others. The leveling one doesn’t bother me too much. But other kinds can ruin other player’s fun, and that’s a problem. It cheats people out of the experience, and is goddamn frustrating as a GM.

    I was the last customer to ever make a purchase at Gamestop in Seekonk, MA. The store closed its doors to the public for the final time on January 18th, at 9pm. The final game ever purchased was 'Star Wars: Battlefront 2' for the Xbox. I remember coming to check this store out the first weekend it opened. I was so excited at the idea of a store dedicated just to video games. At the time, this was some of the most exciting news of my entire life. I signed up for the power-up rewards program and a subscription to GameInformer magazine, within my first few visits. Over the next few years I spent almost all of my disposable income, and a significant portion of my free time, at this store. I enjoyed countless midnight release parties; where I made friends with customers and employees alike, as we bonded while waiting in line for the release of the newest game, and kept ourselves warm with the free domino's pizza provided at nearly every midnight release during the years I shopped here most. My first ever midnight release was for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Don't tell management, but the employees broke street date and gave everyone the game about an hour early! I can't blame them for wanting to go home sooner. Most of us customers had been there waiting since just after sunset! I must have spent over 100 hours waiting at different midnight release parties, and another 100+ hours browsing the used game section whenever I had extra cash or someone wanted me to pick out a holiday gift for myself. I bought the first console I ever purchased with my own money at this store; an all white xbox one with Sunset Overdrive bundled alongside it. What a great game! What a great console... what a great store. And now all that is left is great memories. I shopped here for 14 years, purchased 100s of games, and collected the majority of the physcial game informers that were ever physically published... if i could go back and relive it all, I wouldn't change a single thing.   • Why aren't Riot Games, Epic Games, etc affected by the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act?

    I suppose this is part legal question and part understanding how these companies operate. I'm not from the US so don't have experience with the nuances, but I do have a lot of experience working in the UK legal sector. Reading through the PAFFACAA, any major application that has over a million users and is more than 20% owned by a foreign adverary and also allows the sharing of text or other content will be banned. This seems to be irrespective of whether the owners/maintainers are based in the US or not. At the moment, 2(g)(3)(A) (sorry I'm not entirely sure how your laws are labelled - please correct me if that's wrong) specifically defines ByteDance and its subsidiaries but 2(g)(3)(B) implies the definition goes broader. The reason I statted wondering was the banning of Marvel Snap. I know that Marvel Snap is banned because it's owned by a subsidiary of ByteDance, but I'm confused by the application of the Act here. Marvel Snap as a communication medium is very restricted and its development is US based, headed by Ben Brode et al. I quote their website: "Second Dinner is an award-winning independent game studio based in California. We may be small, but our dreams are big! Let's make fun games together." So that means the "more than 20% owned" part is the offending clause if Marvel Snap is actually banned for being a product of its own. However, the Act seems to be a little clunky and inconsistent here, particularly 2(g)(3)(A) which seems to imply that ByteDance and all its subsidiaries must cease digital operations. It is very specifically targeting ByteDance regardless of the nature of the application itself. Mobile Legends Bang Bang also seems to be banned for the same reason as Marvel Snap. Now looking at Riot Games, it is a private company that is 93% owned by Tencent. If ByteDance is considered a foreign adversary due to risk of propaganda etc, then Tencent who was recently classified as a Chinese military company certainly should be too. All of Riot Games products allow communication and content sharing to the same degree that Marvel Snap does. Riot Games would not fall under the critical exemptions list. However, since Tencent is not defined specifically in 2(g)(3), it falls to whether or not the President determines it a company that qualifies in accordance with 2(g)(3)(B). At present the law seems to be very odd in its application. There doesn't seem to be a defined list of "Foreign Controlled Adversaries" besides ByteDance. I don't want to get into this part since it's literally how a foreign government (to me) works but this seems really sloppily written and gives the President the incredibly dangerous power to ban any digital product since the actual defined bar is so low (Chinese companies own more than 20% of a lot of tech companies) and the only thing protecting a company is the mercy of the President. I would be grateful if someone could look at this and tell me if my reading is correct, that Riot Games is within scope of this law and the President could decide to ban them at any time. Epic Games is a bit more nuanced, and potentially more dangerous if the government is against it. The company is US based but Tencent owns 48% of it. Epic Games, however, has more applications that meet the criteria defined in the Act, particularly things like Fortnite Creative and Epic's wider (albeit still disappointing) social features. Now, if the President defines Tencent and subsidiaries as foreign adversaries, then Epic would go. But this then raises the question of what happens to Unreal. Since Epic would have to cease US based trade, does that mean their customers based in the US would have to drop the engine? I suspect that Epic could then meet the defined exemption since it would have a major impact on the US economy. However this presents a problem whereby the definition of Tencent as a foreign adversary is entirely up in the air. Before finishing, I'll address the elephant in the room. Yes, I know this law specifically targets TikTok and ByteDance. I understand the political context behind it. But when reading laws you need to account for all the implications of it. At present, the President could overnight determine they don't like Riot Games and Epic Games and shut them down immediately. Legally, they would have no recourse other than the sale of their shares. For Riot Games that means selling 73+% of a very successful business. Riot Games is US based so ceasing operations is a huge deal for them. Objectively speaking, Tencent are as much a foreign adversary to the US as ByteDance. I am aware of theories that this law is performative and will be repealed very soon but right now it is law and the SCOTUS has upheld it. We don't know for sure where this goes. Regardless of how you feel about Riot or Epic (and to be clear I dislike both of them) or any of the other pies Tencent have their fingers in, the impact of this could be huge for the tech/gaming industry. I'll refrain from much commentary on the politicial implications of such power, but that scares me too. Edit: To clarify the question: I'm looking for a reason why these companies are out of scope that is supported in the definitions within the Act itself or perhaps within the court rulings in relation to it. I could have read it wrong, but there are a lot of assumptions about how this all works in the comments. To me, this is an incredibly sloppily written law and the scope of the power is huge, but I don't know if I'm missing some nuance as someone who isn't a US citizen or US legal professional. Edit 2: sigh... I love being downvoted in the comments for asking for reference to the law or other sources. I don't think people understand that I'm asking a question, not pushing something. I'm not saying "omg they're going to ban rito" or even "they need to unban TikTok smh". I'm asking from a place of academic interest and wanting to understand the impact of the law here. I have my political views, and yes that does include being worried about potentially abusable powers, but this is a really neutral question. I'm not a US citizen - your laws don't affect me directly, I can open TikTok right now or play Marvel Snap if I wanted to. I'm not Chinese either and I've been vocally critical of them too.     In other soulslike, they pretty much do the same old same old as From's games: Simplistic combat system fuled by a stamina system to combat super strong and deadly foes to create a fine tuned difficulty challenge. Nioh 2, however, feels like an injection of character action game combat into the the Soulslike formula. You have all these stances that have their own combos, and some even allow you to use moves to swap between each stance into yet another move. It feels incredibly badass and different from the rest of the genre. But it still irks me a bit that I cant see everything this game has to offer ( which is fine, its an MMO after all.) So a solo game thats similar to that would alomst be my perfect game. I know that Kingdoms of Amalur is often recommended for that, as well as Dragon Age Inquisition, although that misses the crafting.     I grew up using a keyboard with my right hand on the mouse and left on WASD cause that is what i was told was normal. I knew i was left handed of course, but i just kept with what i knew because it worked. that was, until earlier today i was messing around in Kritta and thought it would be a cool idea to see if it was easier to draw left handed since that's how i draw on paper. after trying, there was in immediate difference in how easily i could draw simple shapes like circles and squares, so i decided to try it out in over watch just to see and WHY HAVE I BEEN PLAYING RIGHTY MY WHOLE LIFE. immediate noticeable difference in aim, it felt like my mouse was always going where i wanted it to with barely any testing. i tried loading up a game, and all my muscle memory was shot so i couldn't actually do anything but heal bot as mercy as i struggled to relearn how to play, but overall my camerawork just felt smoother.
