I felt Isabella Rosselini's character was too much of a cipher, did she even exist? Was everything a figment of the lead's imagination? A dream? I kept expecting Rosselini's Dorothy to reveal herself as a sadomasochist who took pleasure in the abuse she received but I think what the film depicted her as was as a woma driven insane by being kidnapped, her child held hostage and her being tortured which leaves her completely unbalanced. I was actually touched by Laura Dern's performance. At face value, it seems like a generic, uninteresting part, but Dern gave the best performance in the movie: the monologue she does in the car, her reaction when she finds out the guy she likes has been having sex with Dorothy. For me, Michael C. Hall is the person that prompted me to write this. I’d put Tom Cruise as an honorable mention. Hall is a great actor, I love him. I’m not sure if Dexter is the reason I feel the way I do, but chemistry and emotions always seem off with him. Cruise is also great, but he just always gives me a vibe of “everyone else in his life is a secondary character” - on screen. I’d love to keep it performance related and not be influenced by personal information if possible. Reboots are everywhere, and I don't think it's a controversial statement to say most people don't like them because most of the time they are simple cash grabs (this was successful before, let's do it again). Every so often though, we do get a reboot that is "fundamentally different" in some major way, and good or bad you at least respect the fact that it wasn't "the original but with different actors and not as good," and what movies are those for you? For me they are both "normal movies turned musicals," with one being good and the other being bad. First the good, and that is the Paramount Plus version of Snow Day. The original Snow Day was a flop, just a simple movie about a teen and kid enjoying a snow day, where the teen is perusing the girl he likes only to realize his best friend is actually right for him, and the kid with her friends try to stop the sadistic snow plow driver from plowing the streets so they can have another snow day. The reboot follows the same premise, only makes it a musical (and a serviceable soundtrack at that) while also turning the snowplow man into a cartoon villain instead of a realistic villain, and gave the teen and his friend more chemistry at least from what I remember. The original was "generally grounded in reality" from what I remember (there's a lot of unrealistic things, but didn't require significant suspension of disbelief), but the musical is quite unreal with snow plow man's snow plow having a lot of gadgets and all the "choreographed song and dance numbers" found in musicals, which was definitely different. Also, since the original is a generally forgotten flop it's not like anyone could say "viacom is only ding this to capitalize on the original's success," and is really what reboots should be (trying something again that didn't work before but with a different spin, hoping to find success the second time around), which I have to respect. It's not a great movie, but it definitely "justifies it's existence." Second the bad, the Disney Channel version of Freaky Friday. The 3rd movie about a mom and daughter switching bodies using the title "Freaky Friday," this one does seem to exist solely due to the success of the 2003 movie, but actually is a film adaptation of the stage musical (because that exists). It's very much the same story again, but adds a lot of dark undertones. Like, in the 2003 version "everyone remembers," the mom and daughter in each other's bodies cause trouble for each other's lives because that's where the comedy comes from but the stakes are "not that big" (mom-Lindsay doesn't know the test she has and gets hurt by the mean girl who used to be a friend that daughter-Lindsay knows better than to interact with, daughter-Jamie Lee gives bad therapy advice and misses some wedding planning things). In the 2018 version it's significantly higher stakes (mom-Cozi tries to befriend the mean girl who used to be friends with daughter-Cozi still, but it's very clear that the mean girl doesn't want to be her friend and ends up causing significant problems with the real friends, and daughter-Heidi is actively trying to sabotage the wedding between her mom and soon-to-be step-dad). Then the subject matters of some of the songs are REALLY dark (there's a song where daughter-Heidi is telling her little brother about death and how the world is nothing but pain, and a song about mom-Cozi crushing on a 14 or 15 year old boy and how she's conflicted about it because her biological body is that of a teen girl but her brain is that of an adult woman). Then at the end it looks like they aren't going to change back and daughter-Heidi sings about how she will never have 30 years worth of life experiences because she is trapped in her mom's body. Like, it's not a good movie at all and the others are so much better, but I have to applaud the balls this movie has to be so dark while putting it behind generally upbeat songs. What movies are like this for you? As we all know, theaters crank the movie volume all the way up - while this can sometimes be overwhelming I also think it can give a unique film experience that wouldn't be as remarkable if you were watching at home. A big moment on my list is the first Batmobile start-up in The Batman (2022). I still remember watching this in theaters and feeling my seat start to rumble from the noise when he first starts the car, I felt genuine excitement and adrenaline as it revved up and it definitely left an impression on me. I watched it again after it released for streaming - I have a decent sound bar setup but it just wasn't the same! Netflix has two versions of Quentin Tarantino’s 2015 film The Hateful Eight. The theatrical version has a runtime of 2h 47m while the extended version is broken down into 4 episodes with “never-before-seen footage” (calculating a runtime of the series is slightly difficult given title and end sequences). The miniseries is the vision of Tarantino himself. Which version do you consider superior and why? Edit: grammar, written before my morning coffee. Edit: more detail via The Verge: Tarantino says the “extended version” has around 25 minutes of new content, and the scenes don’t play out quite the same way. I was watching Draft Day last night with Kevin Costner. Jennifer Garner plays what felt like to me to be a very clear man’s ideal woman. I’m not talking at all about how she knows the game of football very well or that she’s attractive but talking about how she interacts with her “man.” She treats him like he’s on a pedestal, the way she interacts and responds to him and supports him and lifts him up. It had me curious what other instances there are of women’s character in movies that are very clearly written by a man. Saw Stop Making Sense in theatres yesterday and it was absolutely amazing. This is definitely the kind of movie you need to watch on the big screen. Talking Heads of course are a great band, but seeing them performing on stage is equally phenomenal. Miles encountered that other-universe version of himself, and they stared at each other for a while. Ok, technically, I read a long time ago that Memento had a very specific presentation to its scenes (to be non-specific), so once it started I was like “oh that’s right, it’s going down like this, got it”. I knew nothing about shutter island other than the brief streaming site description and years old memories of the trailer, which I recall leading me to believe the film was a supernatural thriller/horror. Holy shit, talk about a mind fuck, watching those back to back know nothing about each plot? What are the odds, right?? As the 3rd act of Shutter Island was closing I kept looking at my wife going, “wait… wasn’t that…”, “ok come on, they lifted that right??” I immediately went to google and was pleased to see the inevitable comparisons that would validate my somewhat irritated but highly intrigued suspicion that many others felt the same way. I had this thought while watching the newer Robocop. The movie is a real meh in my opinion, but the lab scene with Robocop's disassembling in the beginning was great. He appears to be a nice person. Directors and other crew members love working with him and say he's a hard worker. However whenever I read things about him, there is no middle ground. He is either serviceable as a actor or just has no charisma whatsoever. Funny enough I liked him in TENET (deserved better imho because of covid ill die on that hill) but feel like he had more to work with in The Creator. So what is it gonna take for this guy to escape his fathers shadow and been seen as having sort of screen presence. Perhaps he's better off being a supporting character? A more specific niche? I’m currently rewatching Zodiac and it’s a shining example of why Fincher is among one of today’s greatest directors. Lots of lists of the "most shocking" or "best" movie deaths, but I'm wondering what was the first movie death you remember watching that came as a surprise/shock? Might get some interesting/random responses. Mine is from The Poseidon Adventure. My parents liked this movie, I remember watching it around age 9. Up until then all the movie deaths I remember were kind of expected (bogeyman chasing them) or just bad guys. For me it’s Red Riding Hood (2003). A 13 year old girl lives without her parents in Rome and decides to take it upon herself to kill people she deems immoral with the help of her mysterious wolf friend George. Pretty obscure. I had it on dvd as a kid and I loved it. Super low budget, obviously nothing special but it’s one of those b-list (I’d venture to say this one is d-list) horror films that’s fun to watch despite its low quality. Edit: This film is not on any streaming service anywhere and you can no longer find the dvd online. You can however watch it on YouTube but it’s uploaded in parts in a playlist. It always annoyed me when someone with very mainstream or basic taste in movies was told they needed to watch more movies because it just sounded snobbish and smug. However, this year I've made a very deliberate effort to broaden my horizons and have so far watched hundreds of movies I've never seen before from genres and subject matters I've never really been into. Unfortunately, the snobs were 100% right. It has changed my perspective on movies as a medium, made me love some movies even more and worn down my interest in others altogether. I used to be able to just throw on a marvel movie if I was bored and have a good time, now I just find myself wanting something, anything else. I wasn't really a fan of wordy dramas but now I love them. Movies I dismissed years ago as pretentious now seem more substantial and some movies I thought were great now just seem so obviously pretentious. This was genuinely worse than Morbius. Everything from Ben Affleck’s atrocious acting, the cheap CGI, the laughable dialogue, and the fact that everything is explained rather than shown. I want to preface this by saying this is just my opinion, and you are under no obligation to agree with me (I presume most of you won't) 1 - the film came out in 2004, which is my favourite year 2 - I really, really like the asthetic - even tho it's from the 2000s, it feels like an epic film from the 60s, with slightly grainy footage, wide sweeping helicopter shots etc. 3 - I approve of David benioff's decision to cover the whole of the Trojan war, rather than just the material of Homer's "illiad", it gives it a more epic scope with a truly epic (in the directors cut) sack of Troy sequence. 4 - the acting is great (ik some actors eg Pitt and O'Toole have come out and said they didn't like it) I still think they did a magnificent job. (It also happens to have some of my fav actors eg Sean Bean, Julian Glover, commander mormont, brian fox) 5 - Orlando Bloom does a great job of being a punchable simp 6 - the soundtrack by James Horner is epic 7 - the writing is genuinely decent, and at times great (a rare thing to say about mr Benioff) with some lines "men are haunted by the vastness of eternity" stuck in my head. submitted by /u/HaydenRSnow [link] [comments]
