What is Azure VM temporary storage?
In Azure, every VM – regardless if Linux or Windows – gets a temporary disk assigned automatically. This temporary disk is located on the physical server (the hypervisor) where the Azure VM is hosted and is non-persistent. Disks used by the operating system or additionally added data disks are persistent disks and stored in Azure Storage.
Azure VM’s can be moved from its current host to new host at any time due to maintenance, hardware failures or other reasons. In such an event, the data from the temporary storage will not preserve or moved to the new host. Apart from the hardware failures, there are many other reasons data from the temporary disk will be lost:
- Resizing of the VM
- Restarting of the VM
- Moving from one host to another
- Updating/upgrading of host
Really, the temporary disk should never be used for data that has to be persistent. To avoid misconfiguration, the disk also has the drive label “Temporary Storage” and includes a text file “DATALOSS_WARNING_README.txt”. Read more here…
Does Azure VM include a Windows license?
It depends on the virtual machine type we talk about. Some Azure virtual machines include a Windows operating system license in their price (some even include a SQL Server). Some do not, however, there is an “Azure Hybrid Use Benefit” in certain Microsoft licensing programs, where basically the customer can use its previously acquired software licenses on Azure virtual machines (“bring you own license”). Also, there are Azure virtual machines available with different Linux distributions (both commercial and community), Windows Server license is obviously not included in these. Continue reading here

Testimonial: Passed my AZ-900 on the second attempt!
Wow, what a difference a couple of days and a different set of questions makes. I took the exam Monday and fell just short of passing (659), and I retook it today and scored 850! The questions on the first attempt were definitely harder, and I could tell from the first few questions I was going to have a rough time.
Today was totally different and I felt like I was getting all the “gimme” questions first and was able to coast through most questions confidently. I flagged exactly half the questions for review and at the end I had 20 minutes leftover after I was done reviewing. Total day and night difference between the two attempts.
For preparation I used:
– Microsoft Learn
– A Cloud Guru AZ-900 course + practice exam
– Tutorials Dojo practice exam
– and of course, John Savill’s YT channel
I bought the TD practice exams because of all the suggestions here, and I can attest they were well worth the price. This morning before the exam I went through all the TD section-based exams and took each one until I scored 90% on every section. I don’t always condone preparing for the exam on the day of but it was certainly a nice confidence booster to help me get mentally prepared.
Testimonial: Passed my AZ-900 on the first attempt!
Pleased to have passed this first time with a score of 775!
For any looking to sit this, I’ve had around 3 years of experience proving 2nd line technical support for an Azure environment. I used the following to prep for this exam:
Scotty Duffy’s Udemy Course – this was a bit of a waste of time and money in my eyes, nowhere near detailed enough. There are some reviews from people saying they passed the exam using this course alone with no experience using Azure but I really do not believe that.
Tim Warner’s YouTube series – this was great bearing in mind it was free. Way more worth the time than Scott’s, I wish I’d have started here.
Tutorials Dojo Practise Exams – I’d only recommend using these exams to test your knowledge and build some confidence, the questions in the exam were more difficult but the format and nature of these give you a good idea of what to expect.
Hope this advice helps some of you – onto the AZ-104!
Testimonial: AZ900 – Passed – some notes
Azure Fundamentals AZ900 Exam Prep on Udemy – 50-% OFF
Just passed with a 970. I used a combination of:
1. ITProTV – good training overviews but useless practice tests. Utterly not even close to the exam.
2. Udemy and Whizlabs – VERY close to what is on the exam, highly recommend this.
3. TutorialsDojo – this was the closest to the actual test – if you can pass these tests you can pass the exam.
ANKI for terms and basic rules.
I studied way too much – make sure you know what each service does and how offerings differ
1. Availability Zones vs. Sets
2. Datacenters vs. Regions vs. Geographies
3. Where Compliance and Security information is done
4. Exactly what Azure Advisor can do, so you know what it can’t do.
5. The Difference between the DB offerings.
6. The difference between SaaS, IaaS and PaaS – really know this, multiple questions on it.
7. When you are charged for data transfer vs. when you are not.

Use the following flowchart to select a candidate compute service.
Definitions:
- “Lift and shift” is a strategy for migrating a workload to the cloud without redesigning the application or making code changes. Also called rehosting. For more information, see Azure migration center.
- Cloud optimized is a strategy for migrating to the cloud by refactoring an application to take advantage of cloud-native features and capabilities.
- App Service. A managed service for hosting web apps, mobile app back ends, RESTful APIs, or automated business processes.
- Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). A managed Kubernetes service for running containerized applications.
- Batch. A managed service for running large-scale parallel and high-performance computing (HPC) applications
- Container Instances. The fastest and simplest way to run a container in Azure, without having to provision any virtual machines and without having to adopt a higher-level service.
- Functions. A managed FaaS service.
- Service Fabric. A distributed systems platform that can run in many environments, including Azure or on premises.
- Virtual machines. Deploy and manage VMs inside an Azure virtual network.
- Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) lets you provision individual VMs along with the associated networking and storage components. Then you deploy whatever software and applications you want onto those VMs. This model is the closest to a traditional on-premises environment, except that Microsoft manages the infrastructure. You still manage the individual VMs.
- Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) provides a managed hosting environment, where you can deploy your application without needing to manage VMs or networking resources. Azure App Service is a PaaS service.
- Functions-as-a-Service (FaaS) goes even further in removing the need to worry about the hosting environment. In a FaaS model, you simply deploy your code and the service automatically runs it. Azure Functions are a FaaS service.
There is a spectrum from IaaS to pure PaaS. For example, Azure VMs can autoscale by using virtual machine scale sets. This automatic scaling capability isn’t strictly PaaS, but it’s the type of management feature found in PaaS services.
Azure Data Store:
Use the following flowchart to select a candidate data store.
Which of the following choices isn’t a cloud computing category: NAAS, PAAS, SAAS, IAAS, DAAS?
– Networking-as-a-Service (NaaS)
– NaaS isn’t a cloud computing category.

- (Beginner) Best Azure/Cloud Method to host a Windows Service?by /u/brianmonks48 (Microsoft Azure) on August 14, 2022 at 9:04 pm
I have recently made my first Windows Service and all appears to be working as hoped, only problem is that I require my current PC to be on for the service to be running which isn't ideal. So I am looking for the best solution to host this service in the cloud so its always running and its not dependent on my PC being turned on. The service is relatively lightweight, it just sends me a notification when a new item has been uploaded to a website. Which route is the best to go down here? submitted by /u/brianmonks48 [link] [comments]

Hey all, Does anyone work for Microsoft? What is your position ? Does Microsoft have inhouse positions supporting the company rather then customers ? Looking to get some azure certs, granted I can go look at companies who want azure credentials . Wondering if Microsoft has any sys admin type inhouse jobs or network or data center positions ? I never see them when searching but I am curious Cheers submitted by /u/lilfish718 [link] [comments]
- Data Factory copy activity uncompressing files and keeping their namesby /u/ferrywheel (Microsoft Azure) on August 14, 2022 at 5:05 pm
Hello, I'm having an issue with Data Factory and i can't seem to find a solution for it. I have a pipeline in data factory which receives as a parameter an array in the format [{folder:<folder_name1>, file:<file_pattern1>}, ..., {folder:<folder_nameN>, file:<file_patternN>}] where file_pattern is something like ????????_file_name.tar.gz. Inside the pipeline I have a forach activity which loops the array, copy all files which matched the file pattern, uncompress it and salve it in a folder. Inside this Copy Activity I enabled in Copy Behavior " Flatten hierarchy" as I needed my files to be saved without the folder structure from the source. It's all working fine, except that the files are saved using data_GUID.csv and I want to keep the .tar.gz names after uncompressing. So if in the source side I have: 20220814_file_name.tar.gz, I want data factory to save it as 20220814_file_name.csv I can´t use Get Metadata activity to get the file names as I can´t have ForEach loops nested. Does anyone have other solutions for it? submitted by /u/ferrywheel [link] [comments]

- Possible to authenticate against two separate Azure AD directories?by /u/stefanolsen (Microsoft Azure) on August 14, 2022 at 1:37 pm
I have a website which needs OpenID Connect authentication against Azure AD. I have done this many times before with single directories. But this time the site is used by two companies, each with their own Azure AD directory and separate domain names. Is there a way to make a single app registration that can accept logins from the two directories? I don't want a fully open multi-tenant configuration (with the "common" authority). And I would rather not have the application decide which of the two tenants to redirect to, either. submitted by /u/stefanolsen [link] [comments]

- frontend app service not able to call external API hosted on VMby /u/hkusbeckham (Microsoft Azure) on August 14, 2022 at 6:57 am
I have an API hosted on VM, and it works fine when I use postman to test the API. I also started the webapp in local environment, and it can call the API without issues. - Api management billing for shared internal servicesby /u/01acidburn (Microsoft Azure) on August 14, 2022 at 6:22 am
We’ve got 3 products that contain similar features. For an easy example we’re going to pick the feature of sending an email. At the moment we have 3 applications. These 3 applications have their own implementation of sendGrid. They have a queue with azure function. Said function listens to messages, picks ups the emailSsndMessage, and invokes sendGrid api. This means when we need to upgrade sendGrid, make a logic change or even update the framework we need to do it in 3 places. 3 times. We need to deploy it 3 times too. I had an idea over the weekend. Why don’t we have 1 shared service? 1 queue, one sendGrid account one deployment. The 3 products will put the same message in the queue. Voila. Reduced maintaince and added code reuse. Question from management. How do we update the billing info for each product to reflect the traffic going through the shared service? I know ApI management has the idea of billing clients. But in this case our clients aren’t end users. They’re other internal product teams. Is this possible to break down the usage by product and bill to their subscription? submitted by /u/01acidburn [link] [comments]

I have Admin1, User1, and User2. All Users using PowerShell 7 to do basic delegated tasks. All Users are not admin, just users. Users can request the admin to consent to an application. User1 needs to access the user's information ONLY via PowerShell and Graph API so User1 connected to Graph using. Connect-MgGraph -scope User.Read.All Admin1 approve the request by opening the Admin consent requests and approving the request. Now User1 have the User.Read.All, and also User2 and User2 can also query all users shouldn't it only be for User1 When I open the Microsoft Graph PowerShell Enterprise Application\ Permission I find that the User.Read.All is listed as Delegate in the Admin Consent. - Issue creating a Shared Access Signatureby /u/Eneerge (Microsoft Azure) on August 13, 2022 at 7:16 pm
I have an Azure File Share set up that I would like to make accessible in a web application. In order to do this, I need to create a custom URL that contains a Shared Access Signature (SAS). I have written this powershell script to generate the SAS, but I keep getting an error (Signature did not match). Can anyone recognize what I may be doing wrong in this script? FYI, I think I need to use an Azure File Share, because I need users to upload files to it over a mapped network share. This seems like the easiest route for users to upload files. Unless someone has a better solution for allow user's to upload files, please don't tell me I should use "blob" storage which doesn't require the SAS. Blobs would be harder for users to upload. - Azure / 365 foundationsby /u/Trevski_1965 (Microsoft Azure Certifications) on August 13, 2022 at 12:29 pm
My post on SC-900 seems to have gone down well, so thought I would explain where I am and why I am doing the base certs, I am 56, 30+ years of IT experience, and think I have seen most things come and go. I work as an architect, supporting business development, architecture, BI and reporting etc… basically a big mixed bag. Generally I am at a stage where IT is now so broad it’s almost impossible to keep up with developments. So whilst lazing about one Sunday morning, I thought how I might re-address this.. The answer I came up with was to re-approach the NEW basics, look at embrace each of the 900 series certs and run through the curriculum, work pays for any exam I want to take. So it’s really up-to me to decide if I want the Credly badge or not. The reason I am doing the documentation/ cram guide is to freely share, pay back if you will. I have always considered myself to be a life long learner, I was born with that what, why, how mentally. I hate the scenario where you ask why and get told…. Well it’s that way just because it is Ps. Kids have all left now so am really looking to embrace a community…. This one may well be it. Anyway that’s enough about my story…. Very best wishes to you all happy studying I might give study a miss today as it’s currently 31 degrees here, in the heart of Sherwood Forest 🌳 edited to add words my mind though, but neglected to send to my fingers 😂 submitted by /u/Trevski_1965 [link] [comments]
- AZ-140 updated exam (August)by /u/pm_me_your_falcon (Microsoft Azure Certifications) on August 13, 2022 at 7:53 am
Hi Everyone, I am just wondering if anyone has done the updated AZ-140 (Configuring and Operating Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop) exam. I've gone through an acloudacedemy course and Microsoft Learn and purchased the MeasureUp practice exam. I felt like the acloudcadery course covered far more then Microsoft Learn even though it was slightly outdated and didn't touch on some of the newer concepts. The MeasureUp practice test has again been very good and seems to cover far more then what was include in the Microsoft Learn however again didn't touch on some of the newer concepts. For example the Microsoft Learn has an entire section on Azure Firewall and probably got 2 questions in the practice test covering this. I've attached a screenshot of what they changed in the exam. https://imgur.com/JZkukCa submitted by /u/pm_me_your_falcon [link] [comments]
