Which one is better to live in – Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
Do you feel like a big city slicker or a small town girl? Edmonton or Calgary – which one is better to live in? Both cities have their pros and cons, but when it comes down to it, we think Calgary takes the cake. Read on to find out why!
Calgary and Edmonton are the 2 biggest cities in Alberta, Canada. The question is which one is better to live in, Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
It is difficult to say which city is better to live in, as it ultimately depends on an individual’s personal preferences and priorities. Both Calgary and Edmonton have their own unique features and attractions, and which city is better for you will depend on what you are looking for in a place to live.
Here are some factors to consider when deciding between Calgary and Edmonton:
Location: Calgary is located in southern Alberta, near the Rocky Mountains, while Edmonton is located in central Alberta. This can be a factor to consider if you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing, or if you prefer a more urban environment.
Cost of living: Both Calgary and Edmonton have a relatively low cost of living compared to other major cities in Canada. However, Calgary tends to be more expensive than Edmonton, particularly in terms of housing costs.
Employment: Both cities have strong economies and a diverse range of industries, including oil and gas, healthcare, and technology. Unemployment rates in both cities are generally low.
Climate: Calgary and Edmonton both have cold winters and warm summers, with Calgary generally experiencing cooler temperatures and more snowfall.
Ultimately, the decision of which city is better to live in will depend on your personal circumstances and what you are looking for in a place to call home. It may be helpful to research and compare the two cities in more detail to determine which one is a better fit for you.
What are the pros and cons of Calgary vs Edmonton.
As someone who has lived in both cities for more than 3 years and is still living in Calgary:
Weather: you have more sunshine and less harsh winter in Calgary with occasional positive temperature in the middle of the winter because of the Chinook winds: Calgary wins
Cost of life: Edmonton rent, home ownership, food, clothing is slightly cheaper than same items in Calgary: Edmonton wins
Job Opportunities: more blue collar jobs in Edmonton, more white collar jobs in Calgary: tie
Education: Edmonton has one of the top university in Canada called University of Alberta. University of Calgary has a first class business school called Hayskane school of business. Edmonton wins.
City’s architecture: Calgary seems newer, nicely architected and just more beautiful to me by far: Calgary wins
People: just the same to me, no difference: tie
Size and population: Calgary (1.3 million people, 825 km2) is larger and have more people than Edmonton (1 million people, 684 km2): I won’t call this a win
Mountains and lakes :Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Jasper National Park, Waterton Lakes National Park, are all closer to Calgary than Edmonton. Calgary is 1 hour from Banff, and day trips to the mountains are very common. Edmonton is 4 hours from Jasper, and trips to the mountains are more of a long weekend activity: Calgary Wins
Summer festivities: Both cities have great and similar festivals, but Calgary hosts the greatest western festival on earth in July called the Stampede. Sylvan Lake is halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. Calgary wins.
Sunshine: Calgary has way more sunshine that Edmonton. In fact, Calgary is amongst the top city with sunshine exposure in the entire country. Sunshine is happiness. Calgary wins.
Politics: Both cities are economically conservative. Edmonton is a little bit more socially liberal than Calgary. Who cares? Tie.
Sports: Flames(NHL)and Stampeders(CFL)in Calgary, Oiler(NHL) and Eskimos(CFL) in Edmonton. Several amateur leagues, indoor and outdoor facilities for soccer, hockey, basketball, football and baseball in both cities; ShowUpAndPlay in Calgary, ShowUpAndPlay in Edmonton : Tie
Cleanliness: Calgary is one of the cleanness cities in the world. I am in awe myself whenever I walk downtown and in my neighbourhood of Walden. Calgary wins by far.
Public Transit: Calgary C-Train has 3 lines and covers all 4 quadrants of the city(NW, SW,SE,NE) with multiple park and rides location at various C-Train stations. There are buses in almost every neighborhoods in Calgary connecting you to the nearest C-Train station. Edmonton Transit Services (ETS) provides service on buses and light-rail transit within the City of Edmonton limits, in addition to Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, Beaumont, and the Edmonton Garrison at Namao. It also provides connections to suburban transit services. Calgary Wins.
With all that in mind, I’ll choose Calgary any day.

So I'm approaching my second year in Edmonton coming from BC, and every once in a while I meet someone out here that gives me good vibes. I was giving my cheap folding chair away for free and the guy that had to climb up a bunch of steps to get it seemed really grateful. He thought I had 2 but I only had one but he was still happy. Poor guy had a way to go down the remainder of the steps though. I tried to tell him to drive to top of hill to avoid the steps but he didn't understand. I know this seems insignificant but the thing is that I've never considered myself a compassionate person at all, but I felt bad for the guy somehow. Maybe it's the cold winter contrast that makes some people good, I don't know. There are some good people out here I think. submitted by /u/TheDavid8 [link] [comments]
What’s the best way to get from Edmonton airport to Red Deer NOT using uber? I have seen the Red Arrow bus makes that trip but it seems I’d have to time a flight with their schedule and stop at the airport.. thanks everyone! submitted by /u/Coast_Budz [link] [comments]
To the middle aged lady riding her bike in the middle of the right lane on 99st northbound around JH Picard at 4:30pm with no hi vis and lane splitting between cars at red lights to get ahead of them at the green, you're going to get yourself killed. This type of stuff is what give cyclists a bad name in this city, you are not the king of the road, a car is going to win if they hit you 100% of the time. There are far too many new drivers on the road as well for this type of lunacy. submitted by /u/Wavyent [link] [comments]
Calling all APEGA members - What happens if you don't complete enough experience by the time you hit the 8 year max on EIT status? Does APEGA remove your ability to practice as an engineer entirely? Also, my friend told me recently that if you get a degree in one discipline and work in a different discipline, APEGA will require you to go back to school and take all the courses in that discipline before they will let you become a P.Eng. So for example if you get a degree in Chemical and become a project engineer doing mostly mechanical work, they will make you go back and take mechanical courses before they will accept your experience. When I went on the website it appeared it might be true. Has anyone had this happen to them? submitted by /u/Lower-Purpose-649 [link] [comments]
When you are on a multi lane road and the lines are covered so: You know where the lanes are, but everyone in front of you do not. Do you follow them to keep the general flow of traffic or do you be the one to say ‘’nope! I’m correcting this!” submitted by /u/canoe_motor [link] [comments]
When I was at the Westend Value Village saw this ridiculous pricing on there dvd sets. Both are the same thickness and discs but why the hell is DBZ 24.99 and any other dvd box sets are only 5.99. Someone was smoking something when they’re pricing things. submitted by /u/Sol_MegurineLuka03 [link] [comments]
Just a heads up - Canada Place is closed today (Thursday December 5) due to no heat/water pipe break. If you have an appointment there today, it's probably cancelled (but probably a good idea to call and check). We've been told they hope to have the building open tomorrow but no definitive answer yet. submitted by /u/Fromidable-orange [link] [comments]
Weird request but does anyone know of somewhere that would take a recovered Dove with no ankle tag? It got caught in our automotive shop and is extremely friendly to humans. AC&C says they’re full and no where else is willing to take an untagged bird. The birds behaviour and friendliness with humans leads me to believe it must be a pet. This bird is likely going to die without a home. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. submitted by /u/Tricky_Passenger3931 [link] [comments]
Long time reader, first time poster! I am a simpleton and usually stick with the simple/basic things in life but I've been tasked with a great challenge. My husband wants good homemade shortbread cookies for Christmas and I want to find a really good quality butter. I think the no name stuff I usually buy won't cut it. I know we can't get Kerrygold or any of the fancy butters but what would be a good choice to go with? This was his only ask so I'm willing to take a second mortgage on the house to buy this butter. I'm all ears on what you think would be the best! TIA Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays & Happy Kwanzaa to all. submitted by /u/limee89 [link] [comments]

Hello, I’m looking for a beautiful Advent choral concert. Something that is held in a venue with excellent acoustics, sung by a competent choir that pays attention to diction, blend, intonation, nuance, etc. I’m not looking for Christmas concerts, winter concerts, holiday concerts, etc, but rather something that is specifically related to the season of Advent. There is so much beautiful Advent choral music out there and I would love to experience it live. Does such a thing exist in or around Calgary this year? submitted by /u/Smart-Pie7115 [link] [comments]
Have the unfortunate duty of having to plan a funeral for relative quickly. They were not particularly religious but talking to other relatives may have wanted certain things like paper/cloth shoes and certain materials for blankets used for traditional Chinese funerals. Looking online I could only find western fortune emporium over in Chinatown but they did not have hours listed so I am not sure if they are open. Just wanted to check with the collective mind of reddit to see if they may know of any other places. submitted by /u/Questions_4_Asking [link] [comments]

In all likelihood, the outcome of the budget tomorrow will be a roughly ~6% tax increase (down from 8.1%). Tim Cartmell will likely vote against the budget saying it's "too high", but it will ultimately pass. When you see him on the news, campaigning from the steps of City Hall complaining about an out-of-touch spend-happy City Council, remember that he's on that council, has the power to course correct, and chose to do absolutely nothing with his influence. submitted by /u/troypavlek [link] [comments]
Happy Wednesday! This is a continuation of my pattern of posting what I think are decent grocery deals with the hope that this will save some people some money. As noted previously this is heavily skewed to items that I and my family eat. There are probably additional items that are good deals but I don't know it because they aren't items I use but hopefully my list is still useful to you. A few quick reminders: PC Optimum points are collected at No Frills and Superstore. 1,000pts is worth $1. Scene+ points are collected at Safeway, Sobeys and FreshCo. 100pts is worth $1. The value of Save on Foods points depends on what you redeem them for. If you redeem them for a 4L jug of milk then 1,000pts is worth about $1.50. Other redemptions might make them more or less valuable. Superstore, No Frills, FreshCo and Save on Foods are generally willing to price match identical products from (some) other major grocery stores if you show them the item in the competitor’s flyer while checking out so knowing what is on sale at stores that you don't visit can still be useful. There are some restrictions on this... FreshCo won't price match Safeway or Sobeys. Superstore (at least some locations) won't price match Coop. The No Frills on 85st SW won't price match FreshCo. Finally, thank you to everyone that has posted positive comments. It's always nice to receive positive feedback. Walmart: Gala apples: $0.97/lb Cucumber: $1.77 (No Frills and FreshCo are slightly better if you can use 3 of them) Mandarins (4lb): $4.97 Calgary Coop: Boneless skinless chicken breasts: $5.49/lb Red grapes: $1.77/lb Romain hearts (3-pack): $2.99 No Frills: Ambrosia apples: $1.00/lb Allen’s fruit cocktail / Del Monte nectar (960ml or1L): $1.00 (Apple juice is pictured in the flyer, but it’s not clear if juice is included in the sale, or just cocktail / nectar) Lean ground beef (900g): $8.88 (approx. $4.50/lb which is pretty good these days) No name naturally imperfect red or russet potatoes (20lb): $5.94 -- an excellent price (Superstore has them for slightly less) No name all-purpose flour (10kg): $9.99 Christie crackers: $1.99 Classico pasta sauce (600ml): $2.97, buy 1 get 500pts, effectively making them $2.47ea. Note that these have recently been shrinkflationed from 650ml to 600ml. Carrots (3lb): $2.99 Onion (3lb): $2.99 Cucumbers (3-pack) $4.99 Bartlett pears (5lb): $6.99 (Good, Safeway / Sobeys is better this week) Armstrong cheese (400g): $4.77 Dare crackers: $2.00 3,000pts for every $10 spent on Kellogg’s family size cereal. Price match Coop where these are on sale for $5.49ea, which effectively makes them $3.99ea when you buy pairs. These are near the top of page 10 in the Coop flyer. Real Canadian Superstore: Classico pasta sauce (600ml): $2.97, buy 1 get 500pts, effectively making them $2.47ea. Note that these have recently been shrinkflationed from 650ml to 600ml. No name naturally imperfect red or russet potatoes (20lb): $5.54 -- an excellent price Country Harvest bread: $2.99 Breton crackers: Buy 2, get 1,000pts. Price match No Frills where these are advertised for $2.00, effectively making them $1.50ea when you buy pairs. Pork tenderloin (frozen): $2.99/lb Christie crackers: 3,000pts for every $10 spent. Price match No Frills where they are on sale for $1.99ea. FreshCo: Frozen Grade A turkey: $1.47/lb Mandarins (4lb): $5.96 (good, Walmart is better this week) Dairyland butter (1lb): $4.95 Cucumbers (3-pack): $4.99 Heinz canned beans or pasta (398ml): $1.25, buy 4 get 100pts, effectively making them $1.00ea when you buy groups of 4 Safeway / Sobeys: Gala apples: $0.99/lb Navel oranges: $0.99/lb Bartlett pears: $0.99/lb Buy $150 Sobeys or Safeway gift card, get 1,000pts. This effectively allows you to buy the gift card at a 6.67% discount. Yes, you can buy the gift card and then use it for groceries the same day. Save on Foods: Lean ground beef: $4.47/lb (sold in 3lb tubes) Boneless, skinless chicken breasts: $5.99/lb (pretty good, Coop is better this week) Broccoli crowns: $2.49/lb Navel oranges (3lb): $3.99 (pretty good, Safeway/Sobeys is better this week) submitted by /u/PurpleGeek [link] [comments]

Unsure which weather condition they are referring to, the package has already been at their processing facility for the last two days, and they say they cannot provide an estimated delivery date. Should I be concerned about the package being lost? Edit: For anyone else experiencing the same, I was able to get in touch with Purolator and they advised it is not actually a weather delay, it was due to backlogs from increased deliveries due to the Canada post strike, Black Friday rush, etc. They are currently getting assistance from authorized third party delivery services, and you can expect your package within roughly 72 hours from when you received the weather delay notification. Hope this helps! submitted by /u/Ru_5h [link] [comments]
