Which one is better to live in – Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
Do you feel like a big city slicker or a small town girl? Edmonton or Calgary – which one is better to live in? Both cities have their pros and cons, but when it comes down to it, we think Calgary takes the cake. Read on to find out why!
Calgary and Edmonton are the 2 biggest cities in Alberta, Canada. The question is which one is better to live in, Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
It is difficult to say which city is better to live in, as it ultimately depends on an individual’s personal preferences and priorities. Both Calgary and Edmonton have their own unique features and attractions, and which city is better for you will depend on what you are looking for in a place to live.
Here are some factors to consider when deciding between Calgary and Edmonton:
Location: Calgary is located in southern Alberta, near the Rocky Mountains, while Edmonton is located in central Alberta. This can be a factor to consider if you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing, or if you prefer a more urban environment.
Cost of living: Both Calgary and Edmonton have a relatively low cost of living compared to other major cities in Canada. However, Calgary tends to be more expensive than Edmonton, particularly in terms of housing costs.
Employment: Both cities have strong economies and a diverse range of industries, including oil and gas, healthcare, and technology. Unemployment rates in both cities are generally low.
Climate: Calgary and Edmonton both have cold winters and warm summers, with Calgary generally experiencing cooler temperatures and more snowfall.
Ultimately, the decision of which city is better to live in will depend on your personal circumstances and what you are looking for in a place to call home. It may be helpful to research and compare the two cities in more detail to determine which one is a better fit for you.
What are the pros and cons of Calgary vs Edmonton.
As someone who has lived in both cities for more than 3 years and is still living in Calgary:
Weather: you have more sunshine and less harsh winter in Calgary with occasional positive temperature in the middle of the winter because of the Chinook winds: Calgary wins
Cost of life: Edmonton rent, home ownership, food, clothing is slightly cheaper than same items in Calgary: Edmonton wins
Job Opportunities: more blue collar jobs in Edmonton, more white collar jobs in Calgary: tie
Education: Edmonton has one of the top university in Canada called University of Alberta. University of Calgary has a first class business school called Hayskane school of business. Edmonton wins.
City’s architecture: Calgary seems newer, nicely architected and just more beautiful to me by far: Calgary wins
People: just the same to me, no difference: tie
Size and population: Calgary (1.3 million people, 825 km2) is larger and have more people than Edmonton (1 million people, 684 km2): I won’t call this a win
Mountains and lakes :Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Jasper National Park, Waterton Lakes National Park, are all closer to Calgary than Edmonton. Calgary is 1 hour from Banff, and day trips to the mountains are very common. Edmonton is 4 hours from Jasper, and trips to the mountains are more of a long weekend activity: Calgary Wins
Summer festivities: Both cities have great and similar festivals, but Calgary hosts the greatest western festival on earth in July called the Stampede. Sylvan Lake is halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. Calgary wins.
Sunshine: Calgary has way more sunshine that Edmonton. In fact, Calgary is amongst the top city with sunshine exposure in the entire country. Sunshine is happiness. Calgary wins.
Politics: Both cities are economically conservative. Edmonton is a little bit more socially liberal than Calgary. Who cares? Tie.
Sports: Flames(NHL)and Stampeders(CFL)in Calgary, Oiler(NHL) and Eskimos(CFL) in Edmonton. Several amateur leagues, indoor and outdoor facilities for soccer, hockey, basketball, football and baseball in both cities; ShowUpAndPlay in Calgary, ShowUpAndPlay in Edmonton : Tie
Cleanliness: Calgary is one of the cleanness cities in the world. I am in awe myself whenever I walk downtown and in my neighbourhood of Walden. Calgary wins by far.
Public Transit: Calgary C-Train has 3 lines and covers all 4 quadrants of the city(NW, SW,SE,NE) with multiple park and rides location at various C-Train stations. There are buses in almost every neighborhoods in Calgary connecting you to the nearest C-Train station. Edmonton Transit Services (ETS) provides service on buses and light-rail transit within the City of Edmonton limits, in addition to Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, Beaumont, and the Edmonton Garrison at Namao. It also provides connections to suburban transit services. Calgary Wins.
With all that in mind, I’ll choose Calgary any day.

Does anyone have experience getting house keys cut using your own blanks? I'd like to cut a copy of my key, and I grabbed a fun blank from Amazon, but I've heard that some (many?) hardware stores and locksmiths will only cut their own blanks. I'm wondering if anyone's had success bringing in a blank and getting it cut at Home Depot, etc. The one I got does not have a standard shaped head. submitted by /u/PureFicti0n [link] [comments]
Just saw this.. with all included (underground parking rent) its nearing 1600 a month.. FOR A STUDIO. This is insane- if a single person is paying that much for rent too youd think theyd want more than just one big room... this is crazy to me, are things expected to get better anytime soon? Is this the new norm?? submitted by /u/oddlyoddly6 [link] [comments]
Communications expert Dean Heuman from Focus Communications says it's critical that emergency information is vetted and up to date to avoid causing panic. "There really are a lot of challenges in getting out good information. But vital, clear information is the difference between an orderly evacuation and it could possibly be the difference between life and death," Heuman told CTV News Edmonton. My aunt called Harvest Chinese restaurant trying to make a reservation but got no answer, and their website says "We are closed at the moment. Ordering system is disabled." Anyone know if they're just on vacation or something, or have they closed permanently? Man I hope it's not the latter...best Chinese food in the city and they're really nice too 🙁 submitted by /u/xenomorphospace [link] [comments]
My father is visiting from out of province. In his spare time, he loves to build hobby boats of all types and sizes. He hopes to find little motors that he could use for these little boats to take his hobby to the next level. Can anyone recommend a hobby shop/model shop in Calgary with these types of products available? Thanks for any tips! submitted by /u/Calg5000 [link] [comments]
I’m a first time mom and want to know how other parents are protecting their babies from the smoke? I have all my windows closed and an air purifier going, but we unfortunately have plans outdoors this evening that I’m considering cancelling. Would 30minutes outside cause any health issues for my child if we go outside? Anyone have any experience with this? submitted by /u/Icy-Dentist-8561 [link] [comments]
There are 700km of paved pathways in this city. Going for a westbound jog on the eastbound lanes of memorial between 36th and 28th, where there is no shoulder, past cars doing 80km/hour is suicidal. I honked at you because your dumb ass put my and your lives at risk. Make better choices, you tool. submitted by /u/a_reluctant_human [link] [comments]

I apologize if this has been covered, didn’t find it in a quick search. The news and footage and pics of Jasper have me quick depressed this morning. What can I (or anyone else) do to help? Once things settle, can obviously support the businesses that did survive the fire. But beyond that, what can be done? TIA. submitted by /u/lsthirteen [link] [comments]

Hi folks, With the terrible AQI forecasted for today, and probably the remainder of the month/summer, I wanted to share a cheap (sub $100) air purifier that you can build with just duct tape, filters and a box fan. It's something that I've had since last year, and works wonders on reducing particulate levels inside your apartment/house. It can pull about 600 to 800 cubic feet per minute, which is equivalent to ~$200 worth of a HEPA air purifier. Said DIY box w/ instructions: Corsi-Rosenthal box The instructions are basically, get 4 furnace filters, a box fan, and duct tape everything together with the box fan pushing air upwards. It creates enough pressure to pull the surrounding air into the furnace filters and filters out all the garbage in the air. You can purchase the box fan for about $20 from home depot, and get the furnace filters from about any big box store. They also have them at costco for ~50 for the kirkland brand. Link to fan: here Link to furnace filters: here More info on the subject: here, and here. submitted by /u/LachlantehGreat [link] [comments]
My friends and I were saying our goodbyes after a dinner last night on whyte when we were shot at by a pellet gun, We were on whyte in front of cafe mosaics east of 109th street, It was 9:20 pm, we couldn’t see into the vehicle as they were slightly ahead of us, more in front of the Boston Pizza, they were in what I think was a late 90s dark blue with light blue paneling on the bottom half GMC Yukon, We are all fine, it was a quick burst of shots and then the light changed and the car drove away, We were just wondering if this happened to anyone else? submitted by /u/Jules-780 [link] [comments]

I live in Capital Region Housing/Civida and about 5 years ago, I installed hardwired cameras to the exterior of my house because, well, this isn't the most pleasant of housing complexes. I've had yearly inspections since then and not once have they mentioned the cameras, nor did it state anywhere in my lease that I signed 12 years ago that I couldn't have a camera installed. They've recently posted a notice to my door stating that I had to take them down or they would take them down for me, and I would be charged any fees that may be incurred. Can they physically remove my property? And would I be evicted if I refuse? submitted by /u/GonnaActuallyComment [link] [comments]

Copy pasted from my other post, pls bear with me. I'm beyond distraught by what's happening in Jasper. It's been such an integral part of not only my own life and memories but our province's identity and treasured places for ages. All of that, suddenly out of our hands. I want to help in any way i possibly can. I'm a college student so traveling up North is out of the question and so is donating in large amounts, but is there anything I can possibly do in the coming days in Calgary? Evacuee support, supply inventory, aid at shelters or food banks for those who have lost their homes, even filing information for organizations working in support. Pls send me any resources, notices, or any way to contact the organizations helping that you can find. TYIA submitted by /u/constantstateofagony [link] [comments]

Spotted on 4th Street in front of Jara/Circle K a few days back. Snapped a bunch of photos, laughed, and then later heard the kid was pretty embarassed on the patio at the attention. BUT, he also has his TikTok and Insta stickered on his car. Which adds a layer… Think this was real? Or just a clout chase? I should note the car was seen the next night in the same spot, perfectly clean. I assume the tags were down in the kind of spray that can be easily washed with water. submitted by /u/Shawn_Of_The_Shred [link] [comments]

Happy Wednesday! This is a continuation of my pattern of posting what I think are decent grocery deals with the hope that this will save some people some money. As noted previously this is heavily skewed to items that I and my family eat. There are probably additional items that are good deals but I don't know it because they aren't items I use but hopefully my list is still useful to you. A few quick reminders: PC Optimum points are collected at No Frills and Superstore. 1,000pts is worth $1. Scene+ points are collected at Safeway, Sobeys and FreshCo. 100pts is worth $1. The value of Save on Foods points depends on what you redeem them for. If you redeem them for a 4L jug of milk then 1,000pts is worth about $1.50. Other redemptions might make them more or less valuable. Superstore, No Frills and FreshCo are generally willing to price match identical products from (some) other major grocery stores if you show them the item in the competitor’s flyer while checking out so knowing what is on sale at stores that you don't visit can still be useful. I'm told that Save on Foods will also price match, though I have no first hand experience with them. There are some restrictions on this... FreshCo won't price match Safeway or Sobeys. Superstore (at least sometimes) won't price match Coop. The No Frills on 85st SW won't price match FreshCo. Finally, thank you to everyone that has posted positive comments. It's always nice to receive positive feedback. Safeway/Sobeys: Lean ground beef: $3.99/lb Dempster’s hotdog or burger buns: $1.97 Loadable offer: Spend $50, get 500pts (and an additional 1,000pts if you spend $50 3 times by August 14) Schneider's bacon (375g): $3.99 Watermelon (11lb): $4.97 Astro yogurt (12x100g): $3.49 Dare Breton or Vinta crackers: $2.00 Viva Puff cookies: $2.00 Cucumber: $1.49 (only ok, but I didn’t see a better price anywhere else) Lean ground beef burgers: $5.99/lb, spend $20 get 400pts. This makes them less than $5.00/lb if you spend $20.00 on them (but how far you have to go over $20 depends on the package sizes available in store) which is pretty good when they come burger-shaped. No Frills: Blueberries (2lb): $4.84 (very good, but FreshCo is better this week) Boneless, skinless chicken breasts: $5.49/lb Schneider's or Maple Leaf bacon (375g): $3.99 Breyer’s ice cream: Get 4,000pts for every $10 spent. Price match Superstore where these are on sale for $3.97ea, effectively making them $2.64ea when purchasing 3. Cosmic Crisp apples (5lb): $6.99 Bell peppers (6 pack): $6.99 Country Harvest bread: $3.00 Selected Kellogg’s cereal: Buy 1 get 1,000pts, effectively making them $2.99ea Campbell’s chunky soup: $1.99 FreshCo: Schneider's or Maple Leaf bacon (375g): $3.97 Roma tomatoes: $1.27/lb (good, but Superstore has tomatoes on the vine for less) Blueberries (2lb): $3.97 – an excellent price Compliments frozen fruit (600g): $3.97 Walmart: Iceberg lettuce: $0.94 – a fantastic price Whole white mushrooms (227g): $1.44 Redpath white sugar (2kg): $1.97 Dare Breton or Vinta crackers: $1.97 Jet puffed marshmallows (400g): $1.97 Real Canadian Superstore: Blueberries (2lb): $4.84 (very good, but FreshCo is better) Country Harvest bread: $2.99 Tomatoes on the vine: $0.99/lb Bell peppers (6 pack): $6.98 Calgary Coop: Blueberries (2lb): $4.99 Broccoli crows: $2.49/lb + 20% bonus cash if you clip the coupon in the app before purchase effectively making them $1.99/lb Save on Foods: Charmin toilet paper (12 mega rolls = 48 standard rolls): $12.99 submitted by /u/PurpleGeek [link] [comments]

A carbon monoxide detector may have saved the lives of my wife, 8-month old baby, and cat today. Shout out to the Calgary Fire Department and the ATCO tech for helping us trace and resolve the problem. If you don’t have a carbon monoxide detector, get one. I’m curious why Calgary has never ventured or explored creating a year round destination indoor waterpark/ theme park. With frozen winters and smoky summers you’d think the climate is pretty ideal….especially given Cgy household income, booming population and significance of young families here. I’m wondering if anyone else has felt the same? submitted by /u/MrFalsetto [link] [comments]
I moved to Calgary back in 2022 from Winnipeg and was surprised that pretty much every property I looked into had no cooling systems in place. Back in Winnipeg, wherever you looked they had a cooling system included. Considering how hot and dry this sunny city is, this is baffling to me. It's like every summer is hell on earth. And then you have these properties where the bylaws only allow the installation of portable ACs that could barely cool a place down. Their reasoning? For the aesthetics of the property so that its value remains high. Like seriously, let me install a proper AC unit so I can be comfortable in my own place. Calgary, why do you hate cold so much??
