Which one is better to live in – Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
Do you feel like a big city slicker or a small town girl? Edmonton or Calgary – which one is better to live in? Both cities have their pros and cons, but when it comes down to it, we think Calgary takes the cake. Read on to find out why!
Calgary and Edmonton are the 2 biggest cities in Alberta, Canada. The question is which one is better to live in, Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
It is difficult to say which city is better to live in, as it ultimately depends on an individual’s personal preferences and priorities. Both Calgary and Edmonton have their own unique features and attractions, and which city is better for you will depend on what you are looking for in a place to live.
Here are some factors to consider when deciding between Calgary and Edmonton:
Location: Calgary is located in southern Alberta, near the Rocky Mountains, while Edmonton is located in central Alberta. This can be a factor to consider if you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing, or if you prefer a more urban environment.
Cost of living: Both Calgary and Edmonton have a relatively low cost of living compared to other major cities in Canada. However, Calgary tends to be more expensive than Edmonton, particularly in terms of housing costs.
Employment: Both cities have strong economies and a diverse range of industries, including oil and gas, healthcare, and technology. Unemployment rates in both cities are generally low.
Climate: Calgary and Edmonton both have cold winters and warm summers, with Calgary generally experiencing cooler temperatures and more snowfall.
Ultimately, the decision of which city is better to live in will depend on your personal circumstances and what you are looking for in a place to call home. It may be helpful to research and compare the two cities in more detail to determine which one is a better fit for you.
What are the pros and cons of Calgary vs Edmonton.
As someone who has lived in both cities for more than 3 years and is still living in Calgary:
- Weather: you have more sunshine and less harsh winter in Calgary with occasional positive temperature in the middle of the winter because of the Chinook winds: Calgary wins
- Cost of life: Edmonton rent, home ownership, food, clothing is slightly cheaper than same items in Calgary: Edmonton wins
- Job Opportunities: more blue collar jobs in Edmonton, more white collar jobs in Calgary: tie
- Education: Edmonton has one of the top university in Canada called University of Alberta. University of Calgary has a first class business school called Hayskane school of business. Edmonton wins.
- City’s architecture: Calgary seems newer, nicely architected and just more beautiful to me by far: Calgary wins
- People: just the same to me, no difference: tie
- Size and population: Calgary (1.3 million people, 825 km2) is larger and have more people than Edmonton (1 million people, 684 km2): I won’t call this a win
- Mountains and lakes : Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Jasper National Park, Waterton Lakes National Park, are all closer to Calgary than Edmonton. Calgary is 1 hour from Banff, and day trips to the mountains are very common. Edmonton is 4 hours from Jasper, and trips to the mountains are more of a long weekend activity: Calgary Wins
- Summer festivities: Both cities have great and similar festivals, but Calgary hosts the greatest western festival on earth in July called the Stampede. Sylvan Lake is halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. Calgary wins.
- Sunshine: Calgary has way more sunshine that Edmonton. In fact, Calgary is amongst the top city with sunshine exposure in the entire country. Sunshine is happiness. Calgary wins.

- Downton: See Calgary Downtown inRealTimeNow.com. See Edmonton inRealTimeNow.com They are both vibrant and Nice: Tie
- Cleanliness: Calgary is one of the cleanness cities in the world. I am in awe myself whenever I walk downtown and in my neighbourhood of Walden. Calgary wins by far.
- Festivals: Calgary Stampede is unique and a must see in North America. Interstellar Rodeo Festival , Fringe, Jazz Fest, Folk Fest in Edmonton: Calgary wins.
- Public Transit: Calgary C-Train has 3 lines and covers all 4 quadrants of the city(NW, SW,SE,NE) with multiple park and rides location at various C-Train stations. There are buses in almost every neighborhoods in Calgary connecting you to the nearest C-Train station. Edmonton Transit Services (ETS) provides service on buses and light-rail transit within the City of Edmonton limits, in addition to Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, Beaumont, and the Edmonton Garrison at Namao. It also provides connections to suburban transit services. Calgary Wins.
With all that in mind, I’ll choose Calgary any day.

- I got free KDays tickets, will I enjoy it?by /u/narielthetrue (Stories from in and about Edmonton) on July 14, 2025 at 10:31 pm
I have been given 2 free General Admission tickets to KDays for this Sunday. I haven’t been to KDays in about 20 years. I don’t have too much money right now will I be able to enjoy the day with general admission? Or do I have to pay to enjoy everything inside? I know the rides need tickets but the concerts are free, but I won’t be able to go in the evening. I’m struggling with their website to figure out what I can do with just general admission If anyone who has gone in more recent years would be willing to weigh in, I’d appreciate it! submitted by /u/narielthetrue [link] [comments]

- Rockin Thunder Experience? Pros? Cons? Things they should do differently next year?by /u/Fishpiggy (Stories from in and about Edmonton) on July 14, 2025 at 9:42 pm
Went to Rockin Thunder on Saturday and enjoyed the music, but definitely saw some things that could be improved upon. Of course it’s their first year so it’s to be expected, just curious of others experience! Pros - enjoyed the location, and stage, I’m glad it was on a large field. - never had to wait in a long line for drinks Cons - you have to get there right when gates open if you want a good seating area - lines for food trucks were insanely long - because I was near the front, people were butting in front of people’s lawn chairs to stand near the front and blocking views. I probably saw 4 altercations of arguing because of this. People kept moving their chairs closer to prevent this. Felt a bit chaotic. - need more water refilling stations, and better signage. I had to ask the info booth to direct me and it was in a weird spot with no signs at all. - can’t bring in any snacks. Another thing that made people a bit peeved was that they lowered ticket prices suddenly, and people that bought early felt screwed over. submitted by /u/Fishpiggy [link] [comments]

- Thank You Calgary!by /u/NmbrdDays (Calgary: Onward) on July 14, 2025 at 8:46 pm
Wife and I had such a great time between Calgary and Canmore/ Banff. Everyone we met was just so friendly and helpful. We are already planning our return trip. I loved everyone’s gardens and landscaping, most are so meticulous. The stampede was so much fun, ate like an absolute fat kid and loved it. I wanted the sushi taco but didn’t want to wait on that line. We are extremely jealous of your long days, no humidity, and amazing weather. Was not looking forward to coming home to 80% humidity. The Alberta Beef is just wow, I couldn’t get enough of it. It’s going to be hard to eat beef from my local supermarket, until I’m able to stock up in Vermont, where I can also get really high quality beef. The Glamorgan Cheese Buns are on a complete other level. I am happy I don’t live near that bakery, I am also extremely sad I don’t live near them. One bag didn’t even make the plane ride home. I am jealous of you that get them on the regular. Thank you to everyone here for recommendations. Prez choice chips were great, those were my fav all dressed. The cold brew coffee crisp is awesome. Hawkins’ Cheezies are also better than any other ones. Longview jerky is amazing, but what my wife and I really loved was the ginger beef jerky from Pioneer butchery. We grabbed it at a little fancy supermarket by The Belmont Diner, in the Marda loop. I will be trying to make my own at home. The Belmont diner we enjoyed so much we went back twice. Oil and Grass dispensary was top notch and I was extremely happy with all of my purchases. Banff is just magical, it has been on my bucket list for years and did not disappoint. Just majestic. Took advantage of our summer perks with our Ikon pass and got half off lift tickets and did a great short hike at the summit of sunshine. I think I know where the winter ski trip with the guys is going to happen. Thank you again everyone for your hospitality and recommendations. We will be back! submitted by /u/NmbrdDays [link] [comments]

- A concert goers review of the 2025 stampedeby /u/Felfastus (Calgary: Onward) on July 14, 2025 at 8:23 pm
So I had a very inTents stampede and here are a lot of my findings this year. I spent time in National, Wildhorse, Cowboys, Nashville North, Badlands and Ranchmans tent. I should probably specify that I go to lots of these places to dance, listen to live music, drink and kill time, so if your priorities are different you might have different results. At National I saw Chad Brownlee and Marianis Trench. I liked the venue a lot more than I was expecting too. They had the cheapest drinks, $9 buds (I ordered buds at every venue to stay consistent) and food out of any tent I found and I managed to get a relatively good spot without feeling crushed. The vibe was chill enough that Josh Ramsey had no problems wandering through the audience. It was also really cool that they had a weed vendor there (but you could only consume the weed drinks in the smoke pit on the far side of the venue). Entrance costs were around $40 in advance. I was less impressed with its sister tent of wildhorse. I saw Dallas Smith there and while he was fine the rest just felt more…meh. They had $9.50 drinks and the clive burgers, while good, were not $22 good. I also found it was set up much more to socialize with music playing than being a music venue. Their voice of artificial grass…while much nicer to stand on then concrete also made it harder to dance. They did have a lot of cool outdoor furniture though so if you are there to socialize you would probably have a better time. Entrance costs were around $40 in advance. My Cowboys experience was pretty awesome and I really like the new location. I went for Cayell (the afternoon act on whatever day Jordan Davis performed). The grass and plywood everywhere made it much more enjoyable to kill time at then the old location, and the drinks being $13.85 with the mandatory 20% gratuity wasn’t really out of line with lots of the other locations. I would also like to point out that you can not beat its accessibility from the train. I got into this one for free (there are fan givaways online with the condition you show up early). My personal Badlands experience was rough. I went for VAVO so I was also getting a little tired by this point and had slowed down on my drinking. It is a very sunny venue (I showed up at 6 30 so that is also very much on me) and the only one that you feel pretty required to stand on concrete (there is seating but getting rid of the risers just meant there was a lot less of it). It was $9 for heineken 0 more something that could get you impaired and all with the auto grat. This one was an $85 dollar touch to walk in. Ranchmans tent was Ranchmans tent. This year they were really good and put plywood over the parking lot. I was there for Wildr, Cayell and the Line Dance bust out. Drinks were $11 each. The tent itself was ok but the real fun was they also had open sky plywood with a roped off dance area and the nights I was there it was much cooler then the tent. By the end of stampede some of the plywood had lost its rigidity. These were free entry if you attended an event the week before Nashville North was where I spent most of my time, I saw Drake Milligan, Midland and Cole Swindell, and showed up when lots of the local dancers decided to do a takeover on Tuesday. Overall I think I spent at least an hour there on 8 different days. This venue was really fun until the rodeo let out and then if started to fill up. It is still a parking lot with limited foot protection but I managed to find a stool every day. The drinks were 10.50 which was very annoying when paying with Cosco money (issued in $5 increments). I payed 55 or so dollars for all access to the grounds. Finally I saw Simple plan on the Coke stage. Not much to say about it had a good spot on the hill and had fun but there just isn’t much to review about it. Some more general related findings from this year. They made it easier to wait around almost everywhere. The complaints that you have to stand around on hard concrete (with lots of people in boots that are not properly broken in) felt like they were taken seriously The midway was really fun and I discovered you can do almost every ride in around 3 hours (assuming those 3 hours are 9 until noon on family day)...you have to be careful about fast pass at that time tough as if the wo lines are the same size the other line will actually move quicker (somewhere between ¼ to ⅓ seats are reserved for fast pass. I never found the grounds felt particularly crowded except for leaving nashville north on Tuesday…you could however tell when the rodeo let out every day. Overall it was a pretty fun time and now to rest and recover and get ready for next year. edited to add ticket prices to all venues. submitted by /u/Felfastus [link] [comments]

I don't recall ever being warned about this, so even though it is so obvious that it's embarrassing, I thought that I should let others know... Your Ride Transit approval for the ARC card cap of $36 expires on the same day as your Ride Transit Program approval. When you re-apply for LAP / Ride Transit, ARC isn't updated when you're approved again. You have to reapply for the ARC fare cap separately every time you are approved for the Ride Transit Program. You do this by "applying for a concession" on your profile on the ARC website again. The activation code is the same that you were initially given, and your birth month is in the format YYYY-MM-DD. Bit of a "duh" moment for me, but it takes 7-10 business days to be approved again, and that's a lot more than $36 in a month for many people, so don't make this mistake!! submitted by /u/_OddPotato [link] [comments]
- Mandatory Tipping at Nashville North?by /u/georgettowne (Calgary: Onward) on July 14, 2025 at 5:24 pm
I went to Nashville North a couple days ago at the Calgary Stampede grounds and I have a story I want to share as I am curious what people’s thoughts are. I went to a bar to grab a drink with my boyfriend and one of his buddies happened to be in front of us in line. His buddy orders 4 beers & the bartender just turns around grabs them and opens the cans (as they do). When his buddy went to pay his card declined for whatever reason so he asked my bf to cover it and he would e-transfer - that whole discussion took about 20 seconds. So my boyfriend looks at the screen for the $42 of beer and just clicks the no-tip option and the bartender reaches over and CANCELS the transaction and says “let’s try that again, the least you can do is tip me” like in a very serious way, not joking around. She resets it and my bf adds 15% and pays. When it was my turn to order, I got my one drink and tipped well and I had a brief conversation with her about tip-out. Looking back on it, I don’t think I should’ve tipped as well because I think that is kind of ridiculous and unacceptable what happened. I’m a server & bartender too, I get tip out and I understand that side of things, however I also understand it is completely optional and basically just the luck of the draw sometimes, especially in an environment where it’s around a 15 sec interaction to tip on. TLDR; NN bartender canceled the transaction when my bf didn’t tip I am curious what anyone else might think about this situation! (EDIT: I posted this on behalf of a friend who lost her password but it seems she managed to get into her account - consider laelco2 the real OP) submitted by /u/georgettowne [link] [comments]

On the weekend a friend's dog (Tots) was attacked in the sandalwood place part of Leduc by a black german Shepard. The dog ran towards her little dog and attempted to kill it. Thankfully there were three adults there to protect her dog and fight off the aggressive dog as well as protect the toddler they had with them. The Shepard was with their owner, a woman who also had a white dog of the same size. After the attack the woman said her dog was a nice dog but that her dog should have been on a leash, and that Tots was fine because she didn't see any blood. She then wandered off while my friends stood there in shock. If anyone witnessed this attack or knows who this woman may be please DM me. - Stampede vs Calaway Park (During Stampede) Reviewby /u/dannysaurRex (Calgary: Onward) on July 14, 2025 at 6:17 am
I know Stampede ends today, so this isn’t super relevant anymore, but I hope this can be helpful for next year. I saw a lot of people recommend Calaway Park in "what to do during Stampede week that isn’t Stampede" posts, so I figured I’d share my experience taking my two nephews (both under 7) to both Stampede and Calaway Park Price Breakdown We spent around 5 hours at each, so it felt like a fair comparison time-wise. Calaway Park (Sunday): $120 for entrance (after 2pm discounted which was a nice surprise when we got there (~$37/person vs $53/person regular) $10 on games ($5/game) $40 food (2 kids meals: chicken fingers, fries, pop; 1 adult meal: burger, poutine, drink) $20 snacks (ice cream, mini melts, potato twist) Total: ~$200 Stampede (Saturday): $25 entrance (kids were free) $120 all-day ride passes for the kids $50 on extra ride tickets (some rides needed an adult) $30 parking $50 snacks (1 slushie, 1 water, 12 mini donuts, corn dog bites, 2 lemonades), too poor and decided not to eat a meal there 🙁 $30 for 3 games ($10/game) Total: ~$305 Also, I ended up giving away the all-day ride bracelets and leftover tickets when we left around 7pm to some random teens walking on their way to the park lol Honestly, the value felt much more fair at Calaway, also wanted to note that the Stampede, everytime single time I paid, asked for a tip. None of the machines at Calaway asked for a tip Cleanliness Calaway was noticeably cleaner with the bathrooms (still not amazing but better than stampede I guess), grounds, everything just felt better maintained. Rides were also way quieter at Calaway vs Stampede, some of those rides sound like a final destination death is going to happen lol. Calaway had a few water fountains around which were easy to find. Stampede… I only found two the whole time: one near the kids area washrooms and another inside the BMO Centre. The BMO one had like 20–30 people lined up to fill their bottles. Parking Calaway: Free parking, 5 min walk to the entrance Stampede: $30 to park, and it still took us 10ish minutes to get to the actual grounds. Walked through some sketchier areas, lots of people smoking everywhere. I noticed Calaway actually had a designated smoking area, which I appreciated. If you don’t drive, Calaway might be harder to get to since it’s kind of out of the way. Stampede definitely wins for transit access. Crowd This comparison is definitely more geared toward parents with younger kids, since we mostly stayed in the kids’ areas. Calaway was a lot more manageable and kid-focused. Even had a little comic-con event going on, nothing amazing, but they got to meet Paw Patrol, Spider-Man, and Ghost-Spider. Stampede is just busy. I wanted to take them to the Paramount 4D thing but the line was wrapped past the stanchions. Kids got overwhelmed in the crowd, especially near adult side. I actually started to get a bit nervous for their safety, so I left very quickly Stampede definitely seems like it’d be way more fun for teens and adults. For smaller kids, Calaway is better Final Thoughts Both have their perks. Stampede obviously has more to do, cool new food (I had the Dunkaroo mini donuts and they were actually awesome), and is only for 10 days a year kind of hype. But it’s expensive, chaotic, and not as kid friendly. The food at Calaway is very mediocre, not amazing but appreciated they had kids meals that were only $10 Calaway was cheaper, cleaner, more chill, and overall just felt more family-oriented. Not wow but way less stressful and more fun for everyone in our little group. I know there are definitely ways to save money on your trip but i'd prefer not to have to lug around a backpack with food, hold toys, and watch kids at the same time so I just opted to buy food there, drive and park there (sorry but no offence, I dont wanna take transit with 2 little kids with the psychos and gross things i see there), etc. Also, Calaway also has season passes ($150 each) which gets you entrance and you basically save 10% on all food there (maybe other things too but I didn't check) Hope this helps anyone planning for next year! submitted by /u/dannysaurRex [link] [comments]

My wife and her friends would like to do a paddle board/float on the north sask. Yes we know all the blah blah blah about how gross the river can be… Rundle park would likely be the best place to take out. We have never done this in the city. Anyone know the approximate times from put ins like: Kinsmen Park? Emily Murphy Park? Valley Zoo? Fort Edmonton? Terwilligar? The would like at least 4-5 hours of float and paddle. submitted by /u/Venetian_chachi [link] [comments]

I was hoping I might be able to find the person who called 911, after they found my dad on May 20th on the ground. - Registry for Road Testby /u/Fantastic_Crew874 (Stories from in and about Edmonton) on July 13, 2025 at 10:37 pm
Using a throwaway account because I know what I’m about to say could be construed as racist and that’s definitely not my intent. Son went to do his road test and failed. No big deal - I thought he needed more practice anyhow. What I’m struggling with though is the lack of clarity in his written results and he is upset because he says he could not understand what the road test agent was telling him to do so he says he ended up not following her directions because he didn’t understand her through an accent. I’m wondering if there is a registry that is recommended so even if he fails again he can understand why. submitted by /u/Fantastic_Crew874 [link] [comments]

- What would it take for you to go Downtown to shop and eat, especially on the weekends?by /u/margifly (Stories from in and about Edmonton) on July 13, 2025 at 3:39 pm
I work downtown it’s as dead as a doornail on weekends so I’ll go 1st: Free Transit from anywhere in the City to Downtown, with Security on board. Free 2 hour parking. The Downtown Business Association along with Bars and Restaurants need to offer deals to come shop/eat. A Much bigger Dog Park with Street Vendors for food not just for humans but also dogs. Convert the North End Area of Rogers Place into a Farmers Market Wow this is great input, here’s another idea, any extra food that is not sold in a Farmers Market give it to the Homeless, and start offering them a place to grow fruits and vegetables to participate, they need new directions I’ll bet you a lot of them would jump at the opportunity. submitted by /u/margifly [link] [comments]
