  • TFSA
by /u/Grouchy-Raspberry770 (Personal Finance For Canadians) on January 31, 2023 at 8:46 am

I'm new to this so, I wanted to ask to clarify. Let's say I turned 18 in 2013. Started a TFSA account. From my understanding, there is a set contribution limit per year. So if I just opened the account this year, can I put in the all the amount since 2013 into the account at once? If i added correctly, since 2013, the contribution limit would be $67,500. So am I just able to put that amount of money in all at once if I wanted to this year? Or am I only able to put in this year's contribution limit of $6500? submitted by /u/Grouchy-Raspberry770 [link] [comments]

  • Best wifi plan
by /u/melthewhale (Personal Finance For Canadians) on January 31, 2023 at 8:19 am

I was using Telus as I got a Black Friday deal when I signed up December 2021. That deal has now expired and and I want to change to a cheaper plan. I work online so I need good upload speeds but I also spend a lot of time at home streaming so unlimited internet is my priority. I just got a notification I’m at 90% of my internet usage allowance on this new plan (since the deal I signed up under expired) and since I use my wifi for work and school and streaming, I need to find a better unlimited plan submitted by /u/melthewhale [link] [comments]

  • rent dilema
by /u/Fantastic-Ambition19 (Personal Finance For Canadians) on January 31, 2023 at 4:00 am

Would i be able to live off of $15 per hour if I pay rent of 1000 per month? Plus groceries and what not? I'm 18 and looking to move out, but my parents are being very cynical of the situation and saying stuff like I'll never make it on my salary, and so I want a second opinion. I live in Calgary if that makes any difference to the outcome. Thanks all! Edit to clear some stuff up: My parents haven't outright said theyre gonna kick me out, but they have said that they would rather I move out by March 1st. They also are cynical about me moving out, it's a weird combination, I know. I'm not asking for opinions per se, but the people giving a positive opinion even if it doesn't agree with me moving out are very welcome. Realistically I think that I have to move out for my own mental health, and I really do wish that I could stay at my home, but I don't know that I can. Why are my parents wanting me out? I'm not sure. they said its because I'm entitled and don't act responsible (i think by this they meant getting a tattoo lol), and by entitled they mean that I don't pick up my brothers chores as well when they can't? I work full time as well as attending school in an online course, so im not free all the time, but I do still have some wind down time. I've been butting heads with my family since I was 12, and no matter what you think I believe that no 12 year old deserves to be told they are going to be a prostitute to make money if they dont get their grades up. I wouldn't say my parents are abusive, but we also don't get along. I think that we are one of those families that for as long as I live with them, we will never have a healthy relationship. I've told them this, they agree. any other questions feel free to ask, I'll answer everything i can! submitted by /u/Fantastic-Ambition19 [link] [comments]

by /u/imalittleshortwitch (Personal Finance For Canadians) on January 31, 2023 at 3:12 am

For the first time in almost 10 years, I have 0 credit card debt. Paid off all balances in full this month (from an 8k high in 2020), and will have my car paid off by the end of December, 2 years early. I’m not counting my student loans in this goal bc they’re interest-free, but I’ll still have those gone within a reasonable time period paying the minimum. Big win for someone who struggles with impulse purchasing. To top it off, I managed to save 2 full budget categories towards my TFSA instead of spending them. submitted by /u/imalittleshortwitch [link] [comments]

  • How can I do this better - rate my savings
by /u/Living-Protection526 (Personal Finance For Canadians) on January 31, 2023 at 2:40 am

29 M/ no kids - income 70-90k, no debt For most of early 20's saving was never a concern, but now I feel that I spend more time thinking I should be doing more because I didn't do much when I was younger. I spend a few hours a month managing this, but more time thinking I should do more, but not sure where to go from here. Savings goals: retirement is the big goal here, using my savings outside my tfsa for a future wedding/upgrading from my apartment if/when either of those days come. RRSP: I get a pretty shitty matching program from work, so I don't have one. I mainly invest for my retirement and am really just nervous about putting the rest into VEQT. A rough breakdown: TFSA - I try to max it out at the start of every year 55k (80% mainly in VEQT, and 20% in cash) 20k (TFSA High interest saving account) Savings: 25k (High-interest savings account) I track the rest of my budget pretty actively and put 30% ($1000-1500) a month into my savings. I also recently inherited a good amount of $ and purchased an apartment, and my car is paid off. submitted by /u/Living-Protection526 [link] [comments]

  • Am I naive or tax evasion is just way more common than I thought?
by /u/Last_Illustrator_181 (Personal Finance For Canadians) on January 31, 2023 at 2:32 am

This past weekend, our get-together party with a few friends unexpectedly turned into a tax evasion seminar: Friend A: CPA who rents out condos to exclusively UoT international students in cash, and offers free tax filing services for tenants (a popular service btw), conveniently making sure no rental expenses at his addresses are reported to the CRA. Unreported income $100k+/year. Friend B: Getting paid exclusively in Cryptocurrencies. After some rather complicated maneuver, <5% income tax is achieved vs what would've been a 40% average income tax rate. Tax savings $120k+/year. Friend C: Operates a convenience store. Heavy cash transactions turned into a safe full of unreported cash, which is used for a home renovations and restoration business that only hires cash-only general contractors. Tax savings $150k+/year. As a T4 employee and ETF-only investor, it is eye-opening how creative people can be but at the same time quite disturbing. Is tax evasion really this common in this country? submitted by /u/Last_Illustrator_181 [link] [comments]

  • Stuck in a rut and trying to get out...
by /u/EveryEmployee647 (Personal Finance For Canadians) on January 31, 2023 at 2:16 am

Like the title says... I'm 26 and finished trades school in December 2021. I get paid flat rate so my income fluctuates with how busy we are. I currently owe $29,000 on a line of credit and $26,000 on a vehicle loan. I have $1200 in a TFSA My expenses equal $3200/month for rent, utilities, vehicle payment, insurance, phone bill, internet, groceries, and fuel. I used to eat out a lot and spend money on lots of frivolous things. I've made incredible progress over the past few months but I still find myself needing to borrow money from my line of credit every month. Currently I am making anywhere from $3000-$4000/month after deductions. (The past few months have been closer $3000 due to Christmas. Work always slows down this time of year) I know this is not sustainable. I know I have made some really stupid decisions. I'm trying my best to fix it. I have $4000 left available on my line of credit before I need to rely on credit cards and I'm trying to fix things before it comes to that. I tried to sell my vehicle but it is only worth $22,000. I would need to give the bank $6000 to get out of the loan. I have some things I can sell to come up with that but they aren't selling. The vehicle payment is $530/month and I think getting rid of that alone would get me back on track. Is there anything else I can do? I will answer questions the best I can. I've never been very good with money and I just want to start feeling like an adult. submitted by /u/EveryEmployee647 [link] [comments]

  • Mortgage Renewal
by /u/Realistic_Meeting_86 (Personal Finance For Canadians) on January 31, 2023 at 2:06 am

Mortgage renewal coming up with a big bank and they are offering a decent rate, but I’m feeling rushed. Actual renewal isn’t until June but they called to offer an early renewal with no penalty. I spoke with my independent broker, found out what other lenders are offering and I managed to get them match another banks rate BUT I have to accept by this Friday and they won’t let me amortize to 25 years, only the 20 years remaining. The phone rep wasn’t crazy helpful and booked me an appointment for Friday in the branch, which seems odd because then she’ll be rushed to get details/ paperwork together on the renewal. Question: is this normal? Do they not change the amortization and do they usually give really short rate guarantee periods? submitted by /u/Realistic_Meeting_86 [link] [comments]

  • Landlord won’t provide lease
by /u/cats4lyfeyo99 (Personal Finance For Canadians) on January 31, 2023 at 1:13 am

My husband and I signed an agreement for a two bedroom lease in Toronto and provided the first and last months deposit via bank draft to the listing agent. We received a notice of fulfilment (our agreement was accepted and all our references checked out) but we haven’t been able to get a signed copy of an Ontario Standard Lease. Our real estate agent and the listing agent have attempted multiple times to get a copy of this. Our new condo building will not let us book the moving elevator until the landlord sends a copy of a lease and registers us as tenants. It’s been almost three weeks and we haven’t had any response from the landlord. Is there anything we can do at this point? We’ve already agreed to rent the apartment and have given the deposit but it looks like we’re not protected by the landlord tenant board. I’m five months pregnant and nervous that if we don’t get this sorted, we won’t have anywhere to live! Any advice would be helpful, what should our next steps be? Can we get our deposit back? submitted by /u/cats4lyfeyo99 [link] [comments]
