Which one is better to live in – Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
Do you feel like a big city slicker or a small town girl? Edmonton or Calgary – which one is better to live in? Both cities have their pros and cons, but when it comes down to it, we think Calgary takes the cake. Read on to find out why!
Calgary and Edmonton are the 2 biggest cities in Alberta, Canada. The question is which one is better to live in, Calgary or Edmonton? Why?
It is difficult to say which city is better to live in, as it ultimately depends on an individual’s personal preferences and priorities. Both Calgary and Edmonton have their own unique features and attractions, and which city is better for you will depend on what you are looking for in a place to live.
Here are some factors to consider when deciding between Calgary and Edmonton:
Location: Calgary is located in southern Alberta, near the Rocky Mountains, while Edmonton is located in central Alberta. This can be a factor to consider if you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing, or if you prefer a more urban environment.
Cost of living: Both Calgary and Edmonton have a relatively low cost of living compared to other major cities in Canada. However, Calgary tends to be more expensive than Edmonton, particularly in terms of housing costs.
Employment: Both cities have strong economies and a diverse range of industries, including oil and gas, healthcare, and technology. Unemployment rates in both cities are generally low.
Climate: Calgary and Edmonton both have cold winters and warm summers, with Calgary generally experiencing cooler temperatures and more snowfall.
Ultimately, the decision of which city is better to live in will depend on your personal circumstances and what you are looking for in a place to call home. It may be helpful to research and compare the two cities in more detail to determine which one is a better fit for you.
What are the pros and cons of Calgary vs Edmonton.
As someone who has lived in both cities for more than 3 years and is still living in Calgary:
- Weather: you have more sunshine and less harsh winter in Calgary with occasional positive temperature in the middle of the winter because of the Chinook winds: Calgary wins
- Cost of life: Edmonton rent, home ownership, food, clothing is slightly cheaper than same items in Calgary: Edmonton wins
- Job Opportunities: more blue collar jobs in Edmonton, more white collar jobs in Calgary: tie

- People: just the same to me, no difference: tie
- Size and population: Calgary (1.3 million people, 825 km2) is larger and have more people than Edmonton (1 million people, 684 km2): I won’t call this a win
- Mountains and lakes : Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Jasper National Park, Waterton Lakes National Park, are all closer to Calgary than Edmonton. Calgary is 1 hour from Banff, and day trips to the mountains are very common. Edmonton is 4 hours from Jasper, and trips to the mountains are more of a long weekend activity: Calgary Wins
- Summer festivities: Both cities have great and similar festivals, but Calgary hosts the greatest western festival on earth in July called the Stampede. Sylvan Lake is halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. Calgary wins.
- Sunshine: Calgary has way more sunshine that Edmonton. In fact, Calgary is amongst the top city with sunshine exposure in the entire country. Sunshine is happiness. Calgary wins.

With all that in mind, I’ll choose Calgary any day.

- Alberta legislature votes to redraw electoral map to make a 91-seat legislatureby /u/aaronpaquette- (Stories from in and about Edmonton) on April 22, 2026 at 2:13 am
This is absolute corruption, in case anyone was wondering. At no point should elected officials be involved in designing their own electoral boundaries. Especially in their own favour. Win by doing a good job, not by stealing the voices of the electorate. You will have no say in this decision. You will only have a say in the election to come. A say that has been diluted by the worst impulses of a political Party with seemingly no guiding principles of good and selfless governance. No politician in good conscience could ever truthfully defend such crass and disturbing ambition. It wouldn’t matter which political party or government was engaged in these actions, I would condemn them all equally. As should you. submitted by /u/aaronpaquette- [link] [comments]

- Are there nuns in Edmonton?by /u/thewholefunk333 (Stories from in and about Edmonton) on April 22, 2026 at 1:50 am
I’m sure some of us have seen the “sister and you are so good at that” clip of American nuns with a podcast floating around, and things like that always make me curious at the local level. Down the rabbit hole I went into learning the history of Catholic nuns in Edmonton - the Carmelites, the Grey Nuns, the Sisterhood of St Johns and the Sisters of Providence. Fun fact for my fellow downtowners, the old brick building with the pointy turret at 104th and 100th, across from the Freemason hall, used to be a hostel run by nuns. It’s absolutely hilarious to me that in the early 1900s, the nuns and the Freemasons were neighbours. Back to my actual question, are there still nuns in Edmonton? I’m not religious so maybe my mental picture is no longer accurate to the modern-day nun and I might not be able to pick ‘em out of a crowd, but I’m curious as to whether organizations exist here that are completely immersive in the lifestyle, like those in Europe or the States. submitted by /u/thewholefunk333 [link] [comments]
- Looking for a restaurant from my past!by /u/buffhuskie (Calgary: Onward) on April 22, 2026 at 1:32 am
Hello! I lived around Calgary for a most of my life and have friends visiting the city soon. I no longer live there, but I want to give them recommendations on restaurants, and there’s one place I loved that I cannot seem to remember the name of. If I remember right, it was a Vietnamese place with phenomenal shrimp fried rice, with pink takeout tickets, and its entrance was really small and you’d immediately have to walk upstairs to it. I know that’s likely too vague, but I figured I’d give it a shot; if anybody knows where this is, please drop a name! submitted by /u/buffhuskie [link] [comments]

- If bikes aren't "legally" allowed on sidewalks but the majority of roads have a 50km/hr (at minimum) speed limit far above what 90% of cyclists can reach, where CAN you ride a bike safely?by /u/FrenzyEffect (Calgary: Onward) on April 21, 2026 at 11:47 pm
This has come up in a couple threads with regards to e-bikes specifically and it has made me think as someone who does use a pedal assist bike on the sidewalk (albeit one compliant with the 32km/hr speed limit and almost always going much slower to avoid scaring people to death), where exactly CAN you use a bike like this, let alone a pedal bike if they're banned on sidewalks and too slow for roads? Now, the obvious answer is "trails", where they ARE allowed - but how are you supposed to get to the trails? Unless you're a millionaire living in a house that backs out onto Fish Creek, you need to actually get to the trails and to get to the trails you need to take the sidewalks or the road. This might be fine if you live immediately next to a playground zone that leads into the trails, but in most places that means you either have to break the law or put your life at extreme risk by riding on roads with speed limits you can't feasibly even come close to in a city where people drive massive pickups with the finesse of a Mad Cow Disease patient and often have active contempt for cyclists. I can count on one finger on one hand the amount of times I've even seen a dedicated bike lane outside of the city center too - and it was in the Seton shopping center area which you... have to ride on an extremely busy road or take the sidewalk to get to on a bicycle. I'm not going to say that taking a bicycle on the sidewalk can't be dangerous, but simultaneously for every bicycle related injury or death there are innumerable injuries caused by vehicular collisions with pedestrians. I've almost been hit by cars multiple times while just trying to cross the street at a crosswalk - and while I've also been jumpscared by a passing bike, I really don't think that's too much of an issue in the grand scheme of things. If cycling on a sidewalk puts pedestrians at risk, is it really doing anything besides shifting the risk to have those cyclists try their luck riding down 130th Ave or Southland, let alone something like Crowchild just to get around? That's just signing a death warrant at that point. I dunno, guess I just don't really understand how these kind of bylaws do anything but shoot down any form of transportation besides cars with a bullet to the head execution-style. submitted by /u/FrenzyEffect [link] [comments]

I am looking for some recommendations for a better plumber. Was planning on going with Mr Rooter becauseof name recognition. But they were working in my neighborhood doing an sewer replacement and a neighbor saw a wall cave in on the poor plumber that was down there. - Water heaters. Buying vs rentingby /u/smitten-kitten77 (Calgary: Onward) on April 21, 2026 at 6:32 pm
Hi all! I’m hoping I can get some advice. I have a tankless water heater that’s in need of replacing. I was quoted $4800 from a plumber. I went to a home improvement store and a very helpful worker there said he thought I was getting ripped off. I have no problem with going back to a tank and I was quoted $3,400 for a 50 gallon that would include 10 year warranty on tank, parts, labour. This is all in including tax. I have a family member suggesting to look into renting. With renting, it would include yearly service but is a reoccurring cost. I’m just trying to figure out what my best bet is. I own my home and there are 2 of us living here. Edit: I have heard you loud and clear Reddit fam! Renting is definitely out of the equation now. I will not be doing that. Thank you for having my back. There have been some great suggestions on who to look into for a second opinion. I will be going this route. submitted by /u/smitten-kitten77 [link] [comments]

It's been a tough few weeks and I've been feeling pretty lonely these days and looking for like minded people to hang out with. Only thing I've been doing these days after work is walk along the bow river pathway. It calms me down a little. A little about me, I'm very much into health and fitness. I watch anime. - Where is there to dance in Edmonton?by /u/Jpreadsalot (Stories from in and about Edmonton) on April 21, 2026 at 5:56 pm
I'm somewhat new to this city, been here >2y. Don't drive, live in Skyview area but happy to Uber wherever for this one, if it's the right place. Have been to one bar downtown, On The Rocks. It was okay, but it felt more like a pick-up spot than really dance-focused. My sister & I live together with our teen kids, are in our 50s, & young in spirit, style, & our musical taste ranges from Gen X classics to KPop & pretty much everything our kids listen to. In our 20s we had a club circuit in Vancouver we'd go through, & we'd be on the dance floor most of the night. Where is there to do that in Edmonton? The only genre we're really not that into is C&W, so any kind of bar but that would be fine with us. House, electronic, Top 40, Nostalgia Nights, I don't care what the theme is other than C&W, we just want a great place with awesome DJ where we can dance for hours, drink some drinks & blow our ears out. Any recommendations? submitted by /u/Jpreadsalot [link] [comments]

- Comic Con Photo Opsby /u/CrazySteveCGY (Calgary: Onward) on April 21, 2026 at 4:53 pm
Hi everyone, never been to comic con but planning on this week. I found out GTA5 cast will be here, it’s my favourite game ever and definitely want to take pictures and meet with them! It’s about $245 for a picture with all 3 of the cast, together. Is it done through a professional camera, or my phone? Either way, it’s fine. I also was hoping to speak to Steven ogg (Trevor ) for a brief moment actor is from Calgary and grew up here. Let me know, thanks!! submitted by /u/CrazySteveCGY [link] [comments]

Hello! Recently moved here and haven’t had too much time to explore (started work right away). I have a pregnant friend coming to visit and her main cravings are anything sweet, and I want to organize a “bakery crawl” if you will. What are some must visit spots? Can be wherever - willing to drive around the city! Thanks! submitted by /u/27goingon77 [link] [comments]
- Runway 11/29 @ YYCby /u/eneva92504 (Calgary: Onward) on April 21, 2026 at 3:58 pm
Seeing planes take off from Runway 29 is somewhat common, especially when we're getting chinook winds from the west (like we did yesterday late-afternoon). But I'm curious - has anyone ever seen planes landing on Runway 11, coming in from the NW, or taking off on Runway 11 going SE? I'm guessing it's pretty rare to have winds that strong coming form the SE, but with the way out city's climate is, you never know. submitted by /u/eneva92504 [link] [comments]

- Found-footage horror movie Earth to Colby explores Calgary's haunted hotspots with supernatural taleby /u/UniversalGear (Calgary: Onward) on April 21, 2026 at 3:35 pm
My first feature film EARTH TO COLBY is having its world premiere at the Calgary Underground Film Festival and the Herald was kind enough to do an article about it! It's a mockumentary, found-footage horror film that was made for $25,000 CAD, shot entirely on location in Calgary, AB, and produced with the support of TELUS STORYHIVE. I'm mostly a lurker around these parts but am happy to answer any questions about the whole process of getting this film made. submitted by /u/UniversalGear [link] [comments]

Today I had surgery in Ward 3B1, at the hospital. I was so impressed with the hard working staff. They work like a well oiled machine. Everything was in constant motion but I felt well respected, cared for and heard. All the staff I came into contact with were professional, friendly, caring and compassionate. I appreciate their efforts and thank you for the great care. With all the stories in Health Care, I am happy to pass on my appreciation and thanks to these hard working people. submitted by /u/Effective-Ad9499 [link] [comments]

- Thank you teachers and EAsby /u/BlackSlimx (Stories from in and about Edmonton) on April 20, 2026 at 11:26 pm
Today I volunteered at my son's in school field trip. I would say 80% of the kids would each need a EA(my observation and opinion). The level of dysfunction, restless, chaos going in these kids head was shocking, mind blowing and saddening. Boys more so than girls. It cut across all race.. white, black, Hispanic natives etc. This can't just be video games. This is not about funding. This ain't normal. I remember growing up, it wasn't this bad. Is there something we are eating, drinking, inhaling that's somehow showing up in the kids that no one is telling us? Is this just a one off or is it the case everywhere? Either way thanks to all the teachers and EAs that have to deal with it everyday. Absolute bunkers out there in the classroom. submitted by /u/BlackSlimx [link] [comments]

- New User Guide for r/Edmonton - Please read firstby /u/flynnfx (Stories from in and about Edmonton) on March 16, 2026 at 3:24 pm
NEW USERS of r/Edmonton - kindly read this first To post or comment in r/Edmonton, you need to meet the following criteria: Accounts need to be a week old. You need to have a verified email address. You need to have a minimum amount of TEN (10) COMMENT karma from participating in OTHER SUBREDDITS than r/Edmonton. Why? This helps keep bad actors away, like trolls and banned users. It also helps users new to reddit to have a chance to learn how to use reddit outside of r/Edmonton. #IF YOUR ACCOUNT HAS NOT FULFILLED ALL THREE REQUIREMENTS ABOVE, YOUR POSTS AND COMMENTS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DELETED BY THE AUTO-MODERATOR. #How to verify your email for new users : To verify your email on Reddit, either click the verification link in the email you received when creating your account or go to Settings > Account Settings and choose Update email address to resend the verification email. _Once you request it, open your email's inbox, find the verification email, and click the link inside to complete the process._ - On the web - • Go to your account settings by clicking your profile icon and then selecting Settings. • Click on Account Settings. • Find the email address section. If you see an option to "resend verification email" or similar, click it. • Alternatively, you can navigate directly to reddit.com/prefs/update/ to find the email settings. -- On the app -- • Tap your profile icon. • Go to Settings. • Select Account Settings. • Tap Update email address. • Tap the button to Resend verification email. #What is the difference between POST karma and COMMENT karma? Post karma is earned when users upvote the original submissions (links, images, text posts) you create, reflecting your ability to share engaging content. _Comment karma is earned when your replies to others' posts are upvoted, showing your active participation and contribution to discussions. Both are totaled for your profile but often used separately to satisfy subreddit restrictions._ POST KARMA: Gained from creating threads or posting links. It indicates a good ability to initiate conversations. COMMENT KARMA: Gained from replying to posts or other comments. It indicates active participation in community dialogue. Key Differences: Post karma rewards content creation, while comment karma rewards interaction. #Some subreddits (like r/edmonton) require specific thresholds of either type (or both) to prevent spam, often looking at post, comment, or combined totals for restrictions. Both types of karma are not a 1:1 ratio with upvotes; instead, they represent a weighted score from community upvotes, reduced by downvotes. (In order to post in r/Edmonton - you need to do THREE things:) your account must be a WEEK old (7 days) you need to have TEN (10) COMMENT karma you need to have a verified email address ONCE AGAIN, IF YOUR ACCOUNT HAS NOT FULFILLED THESE THREE (3) REQUIREMENTS YOUR POSTS AND COMMENTS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DELETED BY THE AUTO-MODERATOR. submitted by /u/flynnfx [link] [comments]
