  1. What is icing in hockey? Icing is when a player on his team’s side of the red center line shoots the puck all the way down the ice and it crosses the red goal line at any point (other than the goal). Icing is not permitted when teams are at equal strength or on the power play.

  2. What is power play in hockey? “Power play” is a sporting term used to describe a period of play where one team has a numerical advantage in players, usually due to a rule violation by the opposing team.

  4. What is offside in hockey? A team is offside when any member of the attacking team precedes the puck over the defending team’s blueline. • Best ETF for TSFA
by /u/RD_CNDR (Personal Finance For Canadians) on March 28, 2024 at 8:56 am

Hi guys, Really new into this investment stuff. Recently started a good paying job $100k plus. I currently don't have anything put away for retirement. I have a company pension I will collect at 60-61 area and now at 40. I been reading saying to max out TSFA first before investing into RRSP. So my question is what's the best ETF to buy. I am using TD Bank TSFA. I opened a TSFA, US TSFA, CDN Cash, US cash accounts for investing. I don't mind Risk and looking for max reward. I can currently invest about $1000 month. I have about 20 years to invest and supplement my company pension so I can't retire I would like to have diversity Canada USA and Foreign markets. I know VFV/VOO is supposed to be good but how would you set up $1000 month of you were in my shoes. I also have a company stock program that I invest 6% and the company gives me 35% matching which needs to be held for 1 year before I can re-invest or withdraw the money. CNR stocks. This works out to approx $7000 my contribution $2400 matching atm. I assume it's best to hold for the year, and transfer the $9500-10,000 from the CNR stocks into a higher return ETF etc to reach my goals. submitted by /u/RD_CNDR [link] [comments]

  • Am I an “employee” or “contractor”?
by /u/fAIkout (Personal Finance For Canadians) on March 28, 2024 at 6:57 am

I recently found out that the person I work for is now trying to have me classified as a “contractor” and not an “employee” (because apparently they’re under audit by the CRA, and I spoke with a CPP/EI rulings person today) and wanted others opinions on this. Here are some facts: I’ve worked for them for 8 years (and counting.) We have a written agreement (that they made me sign.) The agreement doesn’t state that I’m a contractor. It’s pretty basic and shows what they pay me per month (it’s the same amount always.) I work from home but it’s strictly online-based (they provide me with their website, which is where much of what I do is done on) so there’s nothing really needed in terms of provided tools by them. They dictate the work I do. I have no say. I can’t just do whatever I want. I don’t invoice them. I cannot subcontract/hire others. I work exclusively for this person. I don’t have my own business or offer my work to anyone else. The work I do was also solely to benefit this person and their business. This person doesn’t provide me with T4 or T4A forms, which I’m now realizing they should have. This is new territory for me and I had no idea how any of this worked. I declared my income but realize I’m likely still going to owe some back — especially even more-so if the CRA decides I’m contract. I feel like this person used me and took advantage of me and my naivety to get ahead, and now want to have me classified as “contract” just so they can get out of paying their share of taxes. submitted by /u/fAIkout [link] [comments]

  • My mom is making me broke
by /u/Either_Health_8764 (Personal Finance For Canadians) on March 28, 2024 at 4:51 am

I sponsored my mom to Canada a few months ago. We’ve lived separate from each other for almost 20 years. When she got to Canada we opened a debit and credit card account for her. Side note: My mom has a mental illness and has been advised by many doctors not to work which means that I have to support her financially. I’m how with doing that, however I’ve learned that she is very irresponsible with money and doesn’t really understand how debit and credit cards work. She’s constantly over spending on the budget we set and it’s mostly to send money for people in her home country. I end up having to pay off her credit that ends up being way more than I budgeted for. On top of that I’m trying to save up for us to move out of our currently living situation but I can’t do that if she’s spending so much! How do I put a limit on her and teach her more about finances? I’ve tried to teach her so many times but we always end up at the same place. I feel so helpless and I don’t know what to do anymore. I use to have a good chunk of money saved but it’s all dwindling down to noting. I need help! submitted by /u/Either_Health_8764 [link] [comments]

by /u/iagodogo (Personal Finance For Canadians) on March 28, 2024 at 3:57 am

I landed a good job in Ottawa working for the city making about $80,000 and will top out at $95,000 before overtime in 5 years. Looking to rent but the options on Ottawa near downtown is slim and expensive. I did find some great options in Gatineau for rent but much cheaper. Will paying income tax for both provinces make it not worth while for the cheaper rent? Looking for some advice and experience before I pull the trigger. I commute by bike so I don't want to be any farther than 10kms from downtown. submitted by /u/iagodogo [link] [comments]

  • How do I put my gambling win to work?
by /u/favichetrai (Personal Finance For Canadians) on March 28, 2024 at 2:38 am

Hey everyone, I have been a bit of a sportsbetter in my past. I decided enoug was enough and excluded my Stake account but before I did that (last week) I bagged $1200 from some lucky bets and I want to use it to kick-start my future. I'm 21, working part-time while juggling college. My income's kinda all over the place, averaging around $800-$1000 a month, not counting this win. Rent and bills eat up most of it ($700 total), and I've been managing to save a bit here and there, nothing major. Got around $2000 saved up so far. With this unexpected win, I wanna be smart about it. Not looking to splurge all on a PS5 or anything, but maybe something that'll set me up better for the future. Been reading up on TFSA, emergency funds, and investing, but it's kinda overwhelming. What’s the best move here? Throw it all into savings? Start investing? Would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions, especially if you've been in a similar spot. Thanks! submitted by /u/favichetrai [link] [comments]

  • Divended or ETFs in TFSA Question
by /u/usmansid98 (Personal Finance For Canadians) on March 28, 2024 at 2:08 am

Hey guys, I am 25 years old and have about $38k contribution left in my TFSA (I've been contributing $1-2k monthly to it to dollar cost average) and have been putting it into VOO, VOOG, VTI etc.. (ETFS). I still have a decent amount of cash just sitting, I was debating between bulk putting it into my TFSA and use up the contribution room and buy stable high divended stocks or keep my TFSA for only growth ETFS and open a personal account to bulk buy these high divended stocks. I heard diveneded stocks are not taxed at highest rate so that's why I was thinking maybe its better to do it in personal as opposed to using up contribution room in my TFSA. What would you guys do? submitted by /u/usmansid98 [link] [comments]

  • Need advice for family member that got in car accident
by /u/chocokari (Personal Finance For Canadians) on March 28, 2024 at 1:40 am

Hello! About a week and a half ago a family member got in a pretty bad car accident (not at fault, got rear ended waiting at a stoplight). She already submitted a claim to her insurance and is in the process of filling out the forms n stuff. I wanted to ask for advice on what other things she may be entitled to get for compensation for the accident. The insurance is covering repair costs for the car, but they're only offering a max of 400$ /week for her missing work, while she used to make ~1000$/week, so her income is taking a pretty big hit. She asked her insurance if they could cover above that 400 max, but they told her to contact the other driver's (at fault) insurance if she wanted more pay. Is that right or is the insurance lowballing her or being lazy? She's also been advised to get an Injury Attorney, especially since she's having a lot of nerve & musculoskeletal pain, plus she had surgeries on her spine and neck area before, which could complicate from this accident. We're not sure if it's a good idea or if it's too much effort for low results. Either way, she's slowly going into the reds financially because of this accident and injuries, and any advice regarding this situation is greatly appreciated! submitted by /u/chocokari [link] [comments]
