  1. What is icing in hockey? Icing is when a player on his team’s side of the red center line shoots the puck all the way down the ice and it crosses the red goal line at any point (other than the goal). Icing is not permitted when teams are at equal strength or on the power play.

  2. What is power play in hockey? “Power play” is a sporting term used to describe a period of play where one team has a numerical advantage in players, usually due to a rule violation by the opposing team.

  • I lost money investing with family.
by /u/elsadhez777 (Personal Finance For Canadians) on October 15, 2024 at 7:14 am

I lost money investing on my brother's recommendation and trying to keep my family’s home as an investment property. He refinanced the house without explaining the terms, and I didn’t realize how bad of an interest rate I had and that majority of the mortgage payment was going toward interest. He did eventually tell me it was not worth keeping and I should sell, but he never explained why or shown me any papers. If I had known the new terms, I would've told him to sell. (To keep this more short I will mainly only go into details with the investing story) It was my first time having a large sum, after years of sacrifice and saving. The first thing I thought was to go to my family. They were poor and have always said” if they had the opportunity, they would do this or that, etc”. My brother recommended interest-bearing investments with a broker he knew personally, but the broker turned out to be a fraud. (I’ve been dealing with this hell for 5 years) I understood the inherent risks of investing, and I realize that I should have done due diligence myself. That’s why throughout all this, I have never asked for any money back. I continued to speak with my brother, visit his family, I even helped him financially with his mortgage even giving him $1500 for nearly 2 years (up until this summer as I could no longer afford) he bought a home and needed help until he found a better job. My brother has NEVER apologized or shown any compassion for recommending the broker. He also had plenty of chances to explain the terms (I did not know much about real estate) I also found out a for the first time a recently, that he took out more money then I knew of when he refinanced. This is what helped cause the interest to spike as bad as it did. When I told him he owed me an apology, he responded, "FOR WHAT?". My brother also lived minutes from the broker's office for years, and he never once went in person to confront them. He only communicated by phone. Mad at the response, I blocked him and uninvited his family from my baby shower. Thoughts? submitted by /u/elsadhez777 [link] [comments]

Now I want to sell the car ? If I sell it in Canada ? What are the implications? If I want to import it, do i need to request the original TITLE from Texas DMV where the original title was issued from. • Expats - impact of temporarily leaving Canada on CPP and OAS
by /u/VeryConcernedUser (Personal Finance For Canadians) on October 15, 2024 at 5:24 am

Let's suppose that I was to leave Canada and work in another country for 10 years after living in Canada for 20 years. What would be the impact on my future CPP and OAS? I guess with OAS it is relatively simple - reduction of 2.5% for every year lived outside of Canada. However, estimating the impact on future CPP seems to be much more difficult. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/VeryConcernedUser [link] [comments]

  • Two sources of income and maternity leave benefits
by /u/thaimluuc (Personal Finance For Canadians) on October 15, 2024 at 4:54 am

I have two sources of income, my day job where I work for the bank as an employee and my side job as a self-employed wedding planner. I just gave birth to a beautiful baby boy this month and I'm in the process of applying for maternity & parental EI benefits. When I'm completing the application, there's a question that asks whether I'm self-employed. Since I didn't make much revenue this year, if fact will be a net loss for 2024, does that impact my ability to receive maternity & parental EI benefits from the government? While I'm on maternity & parental leave for 1 year, I don't plan to accept any wedding planning jobs, essentially not making any profit from the business. Just wanted to know whether my specific scenario (where I am self-employed, not making a profit, and don't plan to take on any event planning gigs during my time off) would have any adverse/negative impact to my ability to receive maternity & parental EI benefits. Hoping a reddit user with familiarity in accounting or have had experience like mine, can share some insights with me. Thanks in advance for your help. submitted by /u/thaimluuc [link] [comments]

  • Side Hustles for Broke University Student?
by /u/sixxofsspades (Personal Finance For Canadians) on October 15, 2024 at 4:17 am

Hi guys, currently a second year undergrad student and I'm looking for anything that'll help generate at least a bit of money. Tried doing stuff on fiverr & upwork but got no attraction, tried tutoring to no avail, posted ads on different selling platforms but got no-showed, tried online surveys and tasks but they were super super nitpicky and nothing I submitted was good enough or something I qualified for. I've applied to basically every part-time job that's entry level, but I've been rejected or ghosted. I've got 5 years of office internship experience for my dad's small business, worked a seasonal position in the beauty industry, and other roles or positions for clubs/societies in University and high school that helped me gain any experience. Idk what I'm doing wrong or if there's anything I can do but I'm desperate (not OF desperate) and am looking for anything. Your advice would be so greatly appreciated! submitted by /u/sixxofsspades [link] [comments]

  • Capital gains on an inherited home
by /u/talk-radio (Personal Finance For Canadians) on October 15, 2024 at 4:17 am

I own and live in my principal home. This year, my father died and I inherited his Vancouver, BC home. He bought it for about $300,000 and at the time of his death, it was worth $1,800,000. I have two questions: If I sell his home today, how do capital gains work? Am I paying capital gains on the difference between today's value and what he purchased it for, ie, $1,800,000-$300,000 so capital gains on $1,500,000? Is there any benefit to waiting a few years before selling it? Thank you submitted by /u/talk-radio [link] [comments]

  • Advice needed - Should you continue investing in FHSA if you’re not sure about buying a house?
by /u/Curious-Buy1231 (Personal Finance For Canadians) on October 15, 2024 at 3:57 am

I (27M) make $65,000 a year and have started investing into my FHSA (invested $1200 so far). Given the housing situation and my income it is sometimes a bit discouraging and feel like maybe it’s not a good idea to save in FHSA. Of course my income would increase but I don’t foresee a major increase as of now. If at all I don’t end up buying a house in the future, is transferring these funds to RRSP the only solution for me? Or should I just withdraw this $1200 from my FHSA and re-invest all of it in TFSA? I’d like to cash out at some point (for marriage or other life events) as I’m investing mostly in FHSA and don’t have any investments in TFSA. For the RRSP however, I am contributing since I’m under a group RRSP plan. submitted by /u/Curious-Buy1231 [link] [comments]

Hey everyone. Just a quick question because the content on the CRA is kind of all over the place. Wondering if yall can help me. I never contributed to my rrsp because I had to pay off lots of stuff after both my parents died (investing and finance was the last thing I was thinking about). Now I’m in my late 20s and made the best year in my life so far in tech sales (about 380k). I am wondering, can I carry over all those years I missed in contributing to my rrsp? • First time investor
by /u/beau98_ (Personal Finance For Canadians) on October 15, 2024 at 1:14 am

I am a 24-year-old living at home with no expenses and no student loans. I recently completed my Master's degree and will be starting work shortly. QUESTION: I have approximately 15,000 CAD that has been sitting in my TFSA, which I’ve been using as a savings account, but I want to start investing. I just opened a Wealthsimple TFSA and hope to begin there. After researching, I’m considering buying ETFs since I’d like to sit back and watch my money grow. I’m thinking of allocating 50% to VFV, 25% to QCC, and 25% to either VEQT or XEQT, as they both seem very similar. I’m open to any feedback or questions submitted by /u/beau98_ [link] [comments]

  • Scammed deposited an transfer without the password
by /u/RockerXt (Personal Finance For Canadians) on October 15, 2024 at 1:13 am

Hey guys, so to gist things, a scammed wanted me to send him an etransfer before his arrival to my house, and I felt safe to do this because it was password protected. They wanted assuramce their time wasnt being wasted so i thought that was fair. It was a long and complicated password that had nothing to do with the question portion of the transfer. Now, where I clearly went wrong was they said they weren't sure if their deposits were working, and if I could send a $1 transfer to confirm it does, then things would be set. In hindsight I should have known, but I was impatient, and why should I worry, these things are password protected? This second transfer had new password, also long and complicated, and unrelated to the previous, and new question. They somehow used this to accept both transfers. I immediately reported this to TD's fraud department and I am waiting for a verdict, I also plan on filing a police report to bolster that. Beyond this, is there anything I can do to hopefully get a reimbursement? On one hand, yes, I should have sniffed this out as a scam, but on the other, Interac/TD's security has clearly been proven useless and that isn't my fault.
