  1. What is icing in hockey? Icing is when a player on his team’s side of the red center line shoots the puck all the way down the ice and it crosses the red goal line at any point (other than the goal). Icing is not permitted when teams are at equal strength or on the power play.

  2. What is power play in hockey? “Power play” is a sporting term used to describe a period of play where one team has a numerical advantage in players, usually due to a rule violation by the opposing team.

  • Review my retirement planning
by /u/Interneter96 (Personal Finance For Canadians) on December 7, 2024 at 3:00 pm

Hello PFC, I need a sanity check on my retirement planning strategy. All advice/criticism is welcome. For simplicity let's say I have $1M. It is actually a bit more but the order of magnitude is right an it simplifies the math. 600k is in non-reg due to a windfall, 200k in TFSA and 200k in RRSP. I am targetting a 70/30 bond stock allocation as I am turning 65. Here is the plan: Stocks: 300k of stock in non-reg as XEQT. I understand there is a benefit here of splitting in multiple funds and allocating for tax efficiency, but it seems to me having fixed income in the registered accounts is more efficient. Fixed income: 200k in SGOV (short term US) in RRSP 200k in ishares bond trust in TFSA - need to figure out what duration I want to target here. My main issue is what to do with the remaining 300k. The most tax-efficient would be to stick it in a Canadian dividend ETF to take advantage of the tax credit, but that is more than I would like to allocate to this sector. The plan would be to draw down from this first. Also, do you have a suggestion for such an ETF? Any other ideas for how to allocate the remaining 300k of fixed income? Thank you! submitted by /u/Interneter96 [link] [comments]

  • Forgot to report taxes on savings accounts for 2 years
by /u/Primary-Rich8860 (Personal Finance For Canadians) on December 7, 2024 at 2:58 pm

Well more accurately i didn’t know i had to do it. Ive been in canada for the last 2 years as an international student and did my best to file taxes even though i worked very little and has been living off of a government scholarship from my country. Still i wanted to file and have a record as i intend to stay in canada. I did my best with all the forms and stuff but everything was so new and weird to me that i didn’t know that the money i had put into savings in my bank (as to not have all my money on checking) was to be reported? I think i made like 50 dollars off of interest in a year. I realized when i saw in my banking webpage i could add my SIN number and download a form. Oops. I am by all accounts poor in canadian standards and got a little bit of money from the federal and provincial (like 5 dollars between them). What should i do with the money i didn’t report from the savings account? Should i just report it next year? submitted by /u/Primary-Rich8860 [link] [comments]

  • What type of account to keep my emergency funds, savings or TFSA?
by /u/Batatica (Personal Finance For Canadians) on December 7, 2024 at 2:49 pm

For the longest time I've had my emergency funds in a savings account my thinking is, if something happens and I ever need it, well it's right there, in my savings easy transfer. But I've just tcome to realize that I also get easy access to my TFSA. So, I'm wondering, where does it make more sense for me to have my emergency funds, savings or TFSA? Where do you keep yours? submitted by /u/Batatica [link] [comments]

  • Onlia refund never issued [Ontario]
by /u/arjungmenon (Personal Finance For Canadians) on December 7, 2024 at 2:43 pm

I was supposed to get a refund from Onlia on October 10, since I switched my car insurance to a different company, back in September (this year), but the refund was never issued. I read that they had been taken over by Aha. Not sure if this has anything to do with it. I can't log in online, or do anything. Overall, this feels very unethical. The refund is over 250. I've tried emailing them, but no response. I'm thinking of filing with the Ontario small claims court, mainly since this sort of behavior is really just unethical and wrong, but it costs 108 to file a small claim in Ontario. submitted by /u/arjungmenon [link] [comments]

  • Creative Ways to Use RESP Withdrawals When Tuition Can Be Paid Independent of RESP Funding
by /u/SoodANimm (Personal Finance For Canadians) on December 7, 2024 at 2:41 pm

I have a fully funded, self-directed RESP holding individual stocks, with grants maximized. Educational costs can be covered with after-tax dollars (ie. RESP funds are not required to be depended on), so I’m exploring the best use of RESP withdrawals. There are three children within the pooled RESP account, and this is in regards to the first child drawing upon the RESP. Some examples: Transferring assets in-kind to a non-registered account to maintain long-term equity positions without selling. Using the RESP to indirectly fund an FHSA for the beneficiary, though I’d probably prefer not to start the 15-year clock yet; though I suppose the sheltered growth could eventually be applied to an investment property. Simply withdrawing cash and reinvesting elsewhere, but I’m unsure if this is the most tax-efficient option. I recognize this is a very privileged position to be in, but nonetheless, I'm trying to best preserve and transfer wealth. I would welcome any constructive thoughts. Thank you! submitted by /u/SoodANimm [link] [comments]

  • Does it make sense to pull out RRSP funds in a low-income year?
by /u/arjungmenon (Personal Finance For Canadians) on December 7, 2024 at 2:37 pm

I understand the benefit of the RRSP is that you defer taxes until retirement. But, you pay full taxes on the deferred amount, versus the 50% capital gains inclusion rate (until 250k) when you withdraw. For context, I moved to Canada in 2022. Obviously, I couldn't contribute to RRSP in 2022 since I had no room back then. In 2023, I contributed about ~24k to my RRSP. With my total income in 2023 being close to 210k, I saved approximately 50% in taxes in 2023, with getting a refund over 10k. This year my income is basically just EI and interest. I've calculated my approximate taxes for 2024 (with wealthsimple tax), and even if I pull the entire 24k in my RRSP out, it'll only be taxed at around 21%. The 21% tax rate seems like a good deal to me. Especially, factoring the 50% capital gains inclusion rate tax break, the value of tax deferral (until decades from now) seems reduced to me. submitted by /u/arjungmenon [link] [comments]

  • Going to see a mortgage broker today - how to prepare
by /u/catnessK (Personal Finance For Canadians) on December 7, 2024 at 1:45 pm

Hi everyone. My husband and I are going to see a mortgage broker today and wanted to know what would be some good questions to ask to make us better informed. My parents are going to be refinancing their mortgage and getting a HELOC which they will be gifting us to help us avoid CMHC interest. I’ve been reading that there is also something called gifted equity down payment where parents gift a portion of the home’s equity to their children. I was going to ask the broker about this and wanted to know if this is a better option. For reference my husband and I make a combined income of 160k. My credit score is 823 and my husband’s is around 613 (he has collections for his OSAP which he’s working on getting out and into a repayment plan). There is a precon build in Barrie with a closing of anytime between June 2025-June 2026. I am going to inform the mortgage broker about the price lists but we don’t want to get anything over 650k. We are going to ask the broker (who is also my parents’ broker) best ways to elevate my husband’s credit and have the least amount of mortgage payments monthly. I’m wondering are we over leveraging ourselves right now? The markets looking like they’re getting worse and interest rates look like they’ll continue to decline so we’d really like to get into the market sooner rather than later. Any advice would be appreciated! submitted by /u/catnessK [link] [comments]

  • I have $50k to transfer out of my company RRSP to a personal one, where should I go?
by /u/TheProudCanadian (Personal Finance For Canadians) on December 7, 2024 at 1:42 pm

Left a position that was doing matching contributions in a Manulife group RRSP. New job also has one (with Canada Life and much higher MER) but I intend to only put new income w/ matching in there and want to take the $50k I've saved with Manulife and move it to a personal account. The purpose of the money hasn't changed and I want to keep it under an RRSP investment. From what I can tell there aren't any restrictions in place about when and where I can move the funds. Any places to avoid? Any sort of promotions going on for bringing in that amount? Any tax implications I am not aware of for doing a proper Rrsp-rrsp transfer? Wealthsimple and a managed portfolio is my current frontrunner. I have other savings there doing more self-directed investing that I'm happy with. submitted by /u/TheProudCanadian [link] [comments]

  • RDSP advice?
by /u/JMFishing83 (Personal Finance For Canadians) on December 7, 2024 at 12:33 pm

I have a 6 year old son with a fairly severe disability. We are unsure if he will ever have a job when he is older and he will most likely live with us until we pass. We are trying to understand how an RDSP works and if it’s worth us opening up an account or not. Our interpretation of the RDSP is that it’s an account that will be used for my son when he retires? We don’t quite get it, my son will probably never work, does it still make sense to open an account. We would love to take advantage of the government matching portion of it but am unsure how we can use this money when he is older and what the withdrawal rules consist of? Can anyone offer some insight as to how the RDSP works and if it would benefit us in some way? Thanks submitted by /u/JMFishing83 [link] [comments]

  • It's the Holiday/Scam Season: Be Very Wary
by /u/adsitus (Personal Finance For Canadians) on December 7, 2024 at 8:29 am

The Holiday Season is upon us, and with it an increase in scams. Please be on the lookout for these common scams: Fake Interac transfers Parcel delivery scams Tech support scams Fake cheque scams You might also receive calls from people saying they're bank employees/policemen/Canada Revenue Agents/Amazon employees, etc. They will claim you must act immediately to avoid monetary losses, and this is intended to put you in panic mode so you don't see the red flags. Hang up on the caller and contact the institution directly through official/verified channels (their official website/phone on the back of your debit/credit card/bill statement) and confirm if anything is happening. r/Scams is a good resource for information on scams. Exercise caution and have a great Holiday Season! submitted by /u/adsitus [link] [comments]

  • Need some advice about RBC homeline plan
by /u/larryscamera (Personal Finance For Canadians) on December 7, 2024 at 8:16 am

I got my mortgage with RBC, and I got the homeline plan; it comes with a line of credit, and my current limit is close to 15000, with an interest rate of 6.45%. I have a different line of credit at a different bank with an interest rate of 9.9%. Based on my research, I now want to use the homeline credit to pay off the other line of credit because of the lower interest rate. This makes more sense, right? I'm a bit tight on budget right now, but I can make the mortgage payment each month, and the interest payment for the homeline credit. My other question would be the more mortgage I pay the credit limit should go higher right? So in this case even if I use some of the credit to pay off the other line of credit, the limit of my homeline credit will still go higher (not trying to use more, just want to understand how it works). It sucks that I have to live on paying the mortgage and the interest-only payment for a while. But you know, shit happens... Thanks so much for any input! submitted by /u/larryscamera [link] [comments]

  • Should my parents cancel their whole life insurance?
by /u/ppapsans (Personal Finance For Canadians) on December 7, 2024 at 4:33 am

My parents started paying since 2013. They are paying about 250 for dad and 170 for mom, so about 420 cad a month. With one person's death, the insurance (canada life) is supposed to give 200,000 dollars. I think they roughly paid like 60,000 dollars so far. My dad is 60 now and mom is 56. We've been thinking about cancelling both their insurance and invest in stocks (like xeqt) submitted by /u/ppapsans [link] [comments]

  • Investing help at 23
by /u/Kitchen_Painting_113 (Personal Finance For Canadians) on December 7, 2024 at 3:41 am

I (23F) know literally nothing about investing, but I do have a TFSA open with AGF financial (primerica), and I now know this company isn’t the greatest. I haven’t invested all of my money into it, but I do have some funds put into that account. My question is, should I open a TFSA with a different company? Or should I just invest my money into the account I already have open? submitted by /u/Kitchen_Painting_113 [link] [comments]

  • Is the money in a savings account taxed after someone dies?
by /u/goodlordineedacoffee (Personal Finance For Canadians) on December 7, 2024 at 2:52 am

The person has a will designating who will inherit the money. Is it taxed? I assume they’ve already paid income tax on that money before it’s in their account but just unsure about estate or probate. In Alberta. submitted by /u/goodlordineedacoffee [link] [comments]
